《Call Of Death》Chapter 9 : The Ninth Victim

Detective Lee, Chief Simon and Officer Chad arrived at the headquarters at the same time. Their superior gestured the two men to follow her. Despite being confused, they just followed behind her into her office.
"Sit down, boys." She said.
They sat down. "Why did you call us both here, Chief?" Detective Lee asked.
Chief Simon sat on her swivel chair, leaned and sighed before facing the two men. "I got some report about this case. This isn't a simple murder case, boys. It's far way more than we thought." She said.
"What do you mean?" Detective Lee asked in confusion.
Chief Simon went silent for a while and then she leaned on her chair, the word stressed is all over her face. "The culprit is more vicious that we think he is. We need to investigate further and solve this case. He had killed a lot of people before these two. We need to do everything to catched him." She added.
"Uhm...wait, we?" Officer Chad asked, confused.
"Yes, you heard it. I want you to team up with Detective Cameron Caiseus Lee to investigate this case, Officer Devius Wayne Chad." Chief Simon seriously explained and both men looked at each other.
"Wait, what!?" They asked in unison.
Detective Lee stood up. "What do you mean, Chief? I can't team up with him, we don't work at the same unit. Also, I am used at handling my case alone. I don't need a partner." He opposed.
"He's right, Chief. I don't need a partner either." The officer agreed.
Chief Simon took a deep breath and told Officer Chad, "I already talked to your superior. He recommended you to be Cameron's partner because of your capability and ability. He told me if you're not the best in your field, you surely is the best in your unit. Trust me, there's nothing to worry about." She assured him.
Officer Devius Chad smiled. "I'm honored to be of such recommendation. Then, I'll do my best to help, Chief."
"I'm glad to hear that." She said then turned to her junior. "Cameron?"
"But, Chief, I don't feel comfortable working with others, you know that." Detective Lee disagreed.
Chief Simon sighed and faced his junior. "Cameron, I know that you are used to working alone. I also know that you are capable of protecting yourself but our enemy this time is like a wind. We don't know when he will strike again but he could be everywhere. We don't have a single idea of his identity but he might know everyone of us. I need you to work with Devius because I know that you'll be more safe if you're with someone. Also, two is better than one, you know it." Sara Simon explained in a long litany, leaving Cameron speechless.
Even if Detective Lee seemed to disagree but he has nothing to say anymore because he knows that if Chief Simon decided already, it can't be changed. He just sat there and listened to what his superior is saying. Also, he knows that Sara Simon is right - two is better than one.
The truth is, he could handle himself but he isn't sure if he could catched the culprit single handedly. He may be the greatest in his profession but Sara is right, their enemy is like the wind. He could or is everywhere but they couldn't locate him. He might be felt but he is hard to be seen. If the culprit is really wandering around, he must also be watching their every move.

"But, Chief, what is the thing you're saying earlier about the murder?" Officer Chad asked.
"Oh, yeah. The murder at the party, it wasn't the first one and the girl at the forest is the ninth victim of this series of murder." She explained but they seem not to understand it.
"What do you mean? The ninth victim?" Detective Lee repeated. "How sure are you that it's done by the same killer, Chief?" He asked.
"It's because the cause of death were the same. The head and throat were badly wounded, causing all the victims their immediate death." The three turned to the door when Detective Parker entered the office.
Chief Simon nodded. "Parker said it right. There has been other victims from other places in Seoul but we weren't informed because they're still investigating about this. Also, the method and caused of their death were all the same. That's the only pattern - slitted throat and wound on the head."
"Then, seven people are already killed by this serial killer? If the two victims were not in our area, we would have never found out? They should have informed us earlier so we can be alerted and start our investigation earlier to prevent other killings!" Detective Lee feels frustrated because of the act of irresponsibility he just heard.
He thought that if they had been warned earlier, they could have done something to protect the victims. He thought that if they had informed them earlier, they could have come up to a way of capturing the culprit.
"Lee, you have to calm down. Nothing can be solved by anger." Chief Simon said.
"But, it's so irresponsible to keep it from us." Cameron clutched his fist to control himself.
Detective Parker sighed and sat on the table. "Even if we were warned, what can we do, Cameron? Can we really come up with a solution or a way to catch the culprit? Can we really foretell who will he kill next? There's no assurance about that, Cameron." Said Parker.
Detective Lee sighed. "I'm sorry, I'm just furious."
"Many people had already lost their lives because of this killer. We might be able to save the other incoming victims but we must do out bests to catch him and make him pay for what he had done, no matter what his reasons are." Detective Parker stated, Cameron nodded.
"That's why I wanted you two to take this case. I know that when you're angry, you're more determined." Chief Simon told her junior, Detective Lee nodded. "Cameron, Devius, I need you to take this case and catch the killer no matter what. I trust you both." Chief Simon said.
"But, how could we start the investigation if we don't have any lead?" Officer Chad asked.
She also have no idea. She just sighed and looked at the two guys sitting in front of her then to Detective Parker. Detective Lee is also thinking. He has an idea but he needs further information to confirm it.
After the meeting, they decided to take a break and get some coffee to wake them up because it's already late and they can't sleep, thinking about the case. Chief Simon went outside to get some fresh air while Cameron chose to just stay inside. Devius also went outside but the refreshing air didn't help him to relax at all. He was also thinking about the culprit. The reasons for his crime - all killers have their reasons, right?

After some time, they were called by Detective Parker. "Guys, you all need hear this, come with me."
Detective Parker motioned them to the room where Officer Chase and the victim's husband are sitting. Officer Chase showed respect to Detective Lee when he saw them walking in.
"What is it, Kairo?" Detective Lee asked his colleague.
He walk towards the man and said, "Tell him everything you told us earlier, Mr. Oscars."
The man looked up to Detective Lee and Officer Chad, his lips are trembling and the shock is still visible to his face. Cameron Lee and Devius Chad stepped forward and waited for him to talk.
"I...E-Eunice r-received a call before she d-died." He begun crying again as soon as he opened his mouth.
Detective Cameron Lee furrowed his brows. "She received a call?"
"Is that why she was holding her phone?" He thought.
"Y-Yes, s-she said the man calling her is saying creepy thing to her. At first we thought it was just some kind of prank but then...t-the next thing I was that my wife...my wife was already dead. I...I think he's the one w-who killed my wife." Mr. Oscars continued saying, trembling.
"Wait, didn't the victim at the party was also holding her phone when we found her?" Officer Devius Chad looked at Detective Lee.
The other nodded. "The call just ended when we arrived at the corpse.
"Then, does the culprit call his victim first before he kills them?"
From what he heard, Detective Lee finally confirmed his speculations. He immediately left the room and went to Chief Simon's office as Devius Chad followed him.
"Chief Simon, I have a question."
"What is it?"
"Do the other victims received any calls before they are murdered?" He asked, Chief Simon nodded.
"Yes, according to the victim's families who Parker had interviewed, they all received some kind of mysterious calls before they died."
"Then, we have a clue now. The only thing we have to find out is why is the culprit calling his victims and what is he telling them. We also need to find out the number he's using so we could track him." Officer Chad said.
"We have to talk to the families of the victims and find that out." Detective Lee uttered.
Officer Chad nodded. It's already late so they decided to talk to the families of the victims tomorrow. Detective Lee brought Officer Chad to the sleeping quarters according to Chief Simon's order. Detective Lee won't be going home tonight either because he has to spend the night looking into some information about the suspect and his victims. All he knows now is that, the the victims received some kind of phone calls before they died. He's also considering the man in a coat that Gong Seuk Tae saw at the party.
'Who are you? And what is your purpose on killing those people?'
He looked at clock on the wall and saw that it's already 11:30 in the evening. He stood up and decided to visit the victim's husband.
"Senior." He heard someone called him before he could open the door, it was Officer Isaac Chase.
"I thought you already returned to your unit, what are you still doing here?" He asked, Officer Chase shook his head.
"Actually, I am looking for Devius because I have something to tell him but Detective Parker said he's at the sleeping quarters. I was about to go home and just talk to him tomorrow but then I saw you, senior." He seemed awkward which Detective Lee noticed.
He gave him a little smile and patted his shoulder to at least lessen his nervousness. "Don't be too nervous, Officer Chase. What can I do for you then?"
"Uhm...Mr. Hansel Oscars, he said he saw someone before his wife's death." He said, Detective Lee glanced inside the room.
"Yeah, he told us already earlier." He responded.
"But I think there's something more, senior. I think Mr. Oscars didn't say everything to you."
Cameron furrowed his brows, opened the door and walk towards Mr. Oscars who was still wide awake and staring at nothing. Officer Chase walked inside too and followed Detective Lee.
"Mr. Oscars, tell me everything that you know and help us give your wife justice." Detective Lee straightforwardly said.
Hansel Oscars slowly lifted his head and swallowed hard. His tears are flowing down his cheeks again because the memory of his wife screaming for help and the image of her dying while he watched is making everything hard for him. He wanted to help his wife but he couldn't do anything to save her.
"I...I saw someone before Eunice was murdered," he begun, Cameron and Isaac just stayed silent and listened. "I-It was so dark but I s-saw a man from the distance."
"Is he... wearing a black coat?" Detective Lee asked, Mr. Oscars slowly nodded and begun crying again.
"I-I thought he was just someone enjoying the woods too b-but I felt odd just by looking at him from a distance." He continued.
"Did you see his face?"
"No, it was so dark and he was far. I should have taken Eunice away from the forest at that very moment. But when I was about to get her, s-she's already bleeding. I-I wanted to save her but I was too panicked and I couldn't do anything." He sobbed.
"Mr. Oscars, it wasn't your fault." Isaac quickly went to console him.
Mr. Oscars shook his head. "No, it was my fault. Maybe he's right. If I wasn't a coward, I would have saved my wife." He sobbed.
Cameron furrowed his brows. "What did you say?"
"I was a coward, I couldn't save my Eunice. I was a coward. I was coward." Mr. Oscars repeatedly said as if he was losing his mind.
Cameron wanted to ask more questions about the 'he' that Mr. Oscars was talking about but he decided to just let the guy moarn. He felt sorry for him but he knows all he could do is capture the culprit and give the justice that the victims deserved. They already died and no one can ever bring them back to life but he could give them justice and he will do everything to give them the justice they deserved.

They say the story is only as good as its villain. Perhaps, it's time to skip the middleman.
