《Call Of Death》Chapter 10 : The Call, The Victims

It was only six in the morning but Detective Lee and Officer Chad are already in the car, heading on their way to meet one of the victim's family to gather some information they could use as lead to catch the culprit. They stopped in front of a kimchi restaurant.
Cameron furrowed his brows for a moment. Based on the main food it serves and the owner's name, it surely is korean restaurant. He didn't know there was some korean restaurant around that place. They stepped out of the car and walked inside. They were greeted by a kind looking woman, maybe about thirty to thirty-five years old. She offered them a seat and some coffee.
"We're you expecting us, ma'am?" Devius Chad asked in confusion because everything is already prepared like she knew they'd come.
The kind lady smiled and said, "I am always expecting people, officer. Ever since my sister died, I often have the authorities as my visitors." She answered with her korean accent.
"Mrs. Kim, we are here to ask some questions about your sister, Ms. Gina Kang," Detective Cameron Lee started. "Did she received any calls before she was...killed?" He asked, hesitant to say the last word.
The lady stayed silent for a second before saying, "Yes, she told me once that someone called her and told her that she will die at the same day she was killed." Cameron Lee and Devius Chad looked at each other.
Officer Chad spoke too. "Did you notice anything suspicious around your sister, like someone who seemed to be watching her?"
Mrs. Kim shook her head. "Well, I remember one time that I saw a man in a black hoodie in front of the restaurant but I never get to see his face because when he noticed that I am looking, he would eventually leave." She stated.
"A man in a black hoodie?" Officer Chad repeated.
Mrs. Kang nodded again. "Yes, it's a long hoodie or maybe a coat? I can't clearly remember." She answered, a little uncertain.
Both men looked at each other as if they have the same thought. "That's all we need to know, thank you, ma'am." Devius said politely with a smile.
After talking to the lady and gathering some information, they said their goodbyes and left. They went to the next victim's family and asked the same question. They also got the same answer — that every victim received the call before they were killed by the culprit. One member of the family would also notice a man wearing a black hoodie or a black coat nearby but unfortunately, no one saw his face.
"How is that even possible?" Cameron sighed as he leaned on the car seat and started massaging his forehead.
"Senior, I'm hungry, let's find a place to eat and then we can talk." Devius suggested to which Cameron gladly agreed because he was also feeling hungry already.
Cameron drove and searched for a place they could go. They stopped to eat lunch at some cafeteria they saw on their way. But even if they already got their orders and was sitting face to face, their minds are out in the space. They've got some clue but still clueless. It's as if they found something but found nothing.
"What do you think, Detective Lee?" Officer Devius Chad asked as he gulp on his coffee.
"What do you mean?"
"Well, what do you think is the culprit's motive to kill those victims and why would he call them before killing them? Is there a possibility that this man who is calling the victims was the killer?" He clarified.

"The main question is, why would he call them before killing them if he could just kill them?" Cameron said.
Devius sighed. "They said all killers has their reasons for their crime. Do you have any idea of what could be his reason?"
"I don't know yet, I still have no idea. We'll find out once we gathered more information." He simply answered
Officer Chad asked again. "You're right. But what intrigued me the most is that, what was he telling his victims on the calls?"
"What?"
"Well, aren't you curious to know? Is he telling them how they'll die?"
"Maybe he's telling them when they will die. That's according to Mrs. Kang's sister before she died."
"But, what if he's telling them something more? Are you not curious to find out?"
Cameron lifted his head and looked at Devius. He's also curious about what the culprit is telling his victims on the calls before he kills them but that's not the main interest for him.
'I must caught him first then I can ask questions.'
After finishing their foods, they went back to the headquarters and reported to Chief Simon everything they found out. Even she, can't find a clue of what the motives are because the victims has no relationship to each other. Detective Parker was also looking confused as he listened to the two men's explanation.
"So, that's the only clue we have. He's calling his victims and then kill them." Kairo sighed, Cameron and Devius nodded.
"We'll find it out more. Let's make sure to catch this bastard no matter what." Chief Simon said in full determination. "Oh, yeah. I have something to tell you, Cameron." She called out Detective Lee who turned to her immediately.
"What is it, Chief?" He asked.
"Take Devius to your apartment for the meantime. You both should stay together until the case is solved." She stated, making Detective Lee furrow his brows.
"What? I might have heard you wrong, Chief."
"You heard me right, Lee. You guys should live together until the case is solve." She repeated.
"Why should we? I don't like the idea of living with this noisy guy." Detective Lee disagreed pointing at Officer Chad.
"Well, it is safer for you two to stay together. Also, if there's an emergency, it's more convenient to just call one of you because you live together instead of having to contact you both separately." She explained.
"I still disagree, Chief. I don't wanna live with him." Cameron refused.
Devius shown an expression of distaste at the display of Cameron's bad manners. 'I thought we had some connection after earlier, turned out I'm wrong.' He stood up and sarcastically smiled.
"As if I wanted to live with you either." He whispered.
Chief Simon sighed and look at the both of them. "Cameron, you'll take Devius Chad with you and you are both living in the same apartment because I told you to and you cannot oppose me." She said in full authority.
"But, Chief—"
"No buts, Cameron Caiseus." She cut his sentence. "And you, Devius, he's older than you and he's your senior so please respect him too." She turned to Officer Chad who just nodded.
After that talk, Detective Lee and Officer Chad was left with no choice but to live together in his apartment until the case is solve. This gave Cameron more motivation to finish the case as soon as possible.
But behind their knowledge, Sara Simon knows that the two doesn't get along well and this is her plan to build a connection between them. They'll be working together and if they don't settle in things, it'll be hard for the investigation to succeed. If they don't get along well, the culprit could play them both. She needs them to build a team to be able to accomplish the task given to them.

"Why do I have to live with this noisy guy when we're just going to work with one case?" Detective Lee whispered to himself while fixing his bed and things.
"Don't be too annoyed, I don't snore. Also, I don't wanna live with you too, I'm just following your superior's order." Devius enunciated.
"Tss!" He growled. "Stop addressing her like that. Since you're under our case, she's also your superior and even is she's not around, you must respect her. Call her chief." Cameron lectured him.
"Tch! Fine, senior." Devius teased.
They just continue their own businesses. After fixing everything, Devius laid down his bed and closed his eyes before falling asleep out of exhaustion. While Cameron sat on his bed and sighed. He doesn't feel comfortable at all. He has never shared a room with anyone ever since he can remember.
He turned to his new temporary room mate. When he saw that Devius was asleep, he stared at him. He looks very innocent when he's asleep but kind of annoying when he's awake. Cameron doesn't like noisy places and noisy people because he easily gets irritated and distracted by it. That's also the reason why he prefer working alone.
"I'll solve this case quickly and make sure get rid of you in no time." He told the sleeping officer before resting and sleeping too. He thought he wouldn't be able to sleep that night because he has some stranger with him in one room but for some reason, that same night was the first one he got to sleep peacefully.
Days passed and they became too busy with the investigation they can hardly argue. Detective Lee and Officer Chad are always out to visit the victims' families hoping that they could get more information from them but just like before, all they found out is that the victims all received a call before they were murdered.
Detective Lee sat on his chair and placed his head on the table. "It's been six days and still we have nothing." He groaned.
"Don't rush it, we'll get something soon." Officer Chad stated, Cameron could do nothing but sigh.
"You've been saying the same exact sentence for the past three days, you know?" He twitched his lips.
Devius scratched his neck and smiled. "That's what I always tell myself these past three days, I thought it might help you." He said.
"Tss! Crazy." He mumbled as he rolls his eyes.
"Detective Lee! Officer Chad!" They both looked at one of Cameron's junior when he called them.
"What is it?" Detective Lee questioned him.
"Someone died again." He said gasping.
Both turned to each other. Those three words made the two run to the car and head to where the scene was. The place sounds familiar to Cameron but he couldn't remember where he heard it. When they arrived at the scene, some of their colleagues are already there and investigating.
"Who is the victim, Isaac?" Officer Chad came over to Officer Chase.
He looked at his friend and mumbled, "Miranda Jameswood, the girl from the bar."
"What?"
Upon hearing that, Devius couldn't believe it so he went to check the victim's identity and there she was, lying lifeless with her body covered in blood oozing from her mouth. Her throat was slit and her skull was almost visible because her head was hit by something hard. Clearly, she was bludgeon to death in the middle of the day. She's still wearing her school uniform and on her hand was her...phone. Detective Lee immediately went near the body and also saw the phone on her hand.
"Brother! Devius!" A beautiful girl came running towards their direction, her face and make up is a messed due to her crying.
"Daena? Princess?" He heard Officer Chad said.
The girl literally jumped on Officer Chad's arms and hugged him while weeping. Officer Chad sighed and patted her back, consoling her.
"My princess, why are you here? What are you doing here?" Concerned, Devius asked she finally calmed down.
She wiped her tears and said, "I-I was studying with Mira in her apartment because she asked me to accompany her. We were having fun when she received a call. She went out saying that she'll be back soon and the next thing I knew, she was dead. Vius, what should I do?" She went crying again.
"Shush, calm down, princess. It's alright, it's alright." Devius comfortes his sister.
Detective Lee left the two to talk as he went to search the area for some information. It was still day time and there are people around the neighborhood. The victim just went home from school and she wasn't even alone. The culprit must be very wise that no one caught him after doing the crime in day time.
'How brave are you to commit at this time of the day?'
He search the surroundings but could not find anything. He continued walking and came across an old house. He stopped and peaked inside, searching if there's anyone there.
"Sir, may I help you?" He saw a woman came out of the house.
"Sorry to disturb you, ma'am, I was just wondering if you notice something suspicious around the neighborhood?" He politely asked.
He doesn't want to worry the woman so he chose not to disclose about the murder since she seemed clueless about it.
The woman shook her head. "I barely went out of the house, so I really don't know much, sir." She replied.
Detective Lee nodded. "Thank you for your time, ma'am." He said.
He was about to walk away when he heard a familiar voice from behind the woman. "I saw him again. It was him again." When he turned to look at the speaker, it was Gong Seuk Tae, he was carrying a basket of clothes. "I saw that man again, lurking around this place and just disappeared after that girl died." He narrated.
Cameron's forehead furrowed as he stared at the boy. He didn't know that Gong Seuk Tae lives near Miranda Jameswoods' house. He stared at the boy and he can see the fear in his eyes. He suddenly got reminded of himself when he was child.
"Did you say, you saw him again, Seuk Tae? The man wearing a black coat?" Detective Lee asked, the boy nodded.
"I...I was selling some fruits when I saw that man. H-He was standing behind the tree and just staring at that girl's house." He said and then he dropped the basket and looked at Cameron's with fear in his eyes, his hands begun shaking too. "W-What if he's going to kill me too, Detective? What if I'm gonna die next? Who will save me?" He then dropped on his knees.
Detective Lee quickly entered the gate and went near Seuk Tae. He wrapped his arms around his shoulder in order to comfort him. The woman just smiled and walked back inside, leaving the two.
"Don't worry, nothing will happen to you. I won't let that happen. I won't let anyone hurt you " He assured the boy.
"W-Will you be able to protect me from him?" Seuk Tae looked up to him while asking that question.
"Yes. Yes, I will." He said without hesitanting, Seuk Tae smiled.
"Really? Will you stay by me? Will you not leave me?" Seuk Tae asked again, his eyes are full of hope but for some reason, Cameron felt like there's something more.
"I promise." He just said, Seuk Tae hugged him.
But to be honest, he doesn't know. He wanted to make the boy feel safe but he doesn't know if he'll be able to protect him because they still have no clue about the culprit.
"Detective, I know. If you can't protect me, it's fine. I was alone all my life, my death won't leave anyone sad." Seuk Tae released him as he sadly smiled and wiped his tears before standing up. He then faced Detective Lee. "But if I ever die, please leave a white rose on my corpse and burry me quickly, Detective. Someone once told me that white rose can serve as a light. I'm terrified of the dark." He whispered.
"Seuk Tae..." He called his name.
Seuk Tae just smiled. "I fear death but I can't control my destiny. If that man is out to kill me, I'll just accept my death and you don't have to protect me, Detective."
"Seuk Tae..."
"If I die around you, please turn your back and don't ever look at my corpse. You really don't have to protect me, you never had to risk your life for someone who don't even know." Seuk Tae smiled and picked up the basket.
Cameron felt a sharp pain in his head and chest. He had to support himself with his hand because he felt quite dizzy. It was like a deja vu. Cameron felt like he's talking to his old self. The boy who used to think of killing himself because of everything he's been through. Looking at Seuk Tae and the tears in his eyes. He can see that he's scared but it seemed like he already accepted that he will die too just like the other victims. Yet behind his hopeless eyes, there was something he couldn't read. Cameron hates this feeling. He struggled to stood up and held Seuk Tae's shoulder.
"I'll protect you no matter what. You don't have to be afraid. I won't let anyone hurt you. Don't ever give when you haven't even tried, kid." He assured him, Seuk Tae nodded and smiled.
"Thank you so much, Detective Lee. I will hold on to that promise. I will believe you that you will protect me and that you wouldn't run away from me." He said and hugged him.
When Seuk Tae went to do the laundry, Cameron talked to the lady for a while. After learning that the lady isn't Seuk Tae's relative, Detective Lee decided to take him to a safer place. Where he could feel assured that no one would harm him.
