《Vampire's Betrayal》Chapter One

It felt like I woke up from a very long nap when I opened my eyes. The familiar surrounds of the Seadonna Tower medical ward filled my vision. Making me think that I've been in this part of the building more than my actual room. Hopefully this will be the last time in a long time.
Sitting up it felt like something was sitting on my chest. It ached as if all I have been doing was coughing my lungs out for weeks. But the hospital gown told me that there was a different reason to the pain. Pulling it enough away from my body, I inspected the injury.
A bandage was wrapped around my chest with a small patch of blood just above the major artery in my chest. I had to have some angels watching over me because I should be dead about now. Thanking whoever was responsible for keeping me alive, I decided that I didn't want to be in the medical room anymore. Sadly, that was also when someone decided to enter the room.
Gabby's eyes lit up the moment she saw that I was awake, "Hey there lucky girl. Any lower with that bullet wound and Ricky wouldn't have been able to save you."
I scuffed at her words, "Sure still hurts like crap."
"We've been monitoring the wound for the past week and you were healing pretty quick once the bullet was out," Gabby reported, "I was just coming in here to see how healed up you are."
She then walked up to me and undressed me enough to get to the bandages on my chest. She looked over the wound as I looked away. I didn't need to see something that almost killed me. When she was done, she rebandaged the wound and wrote something down on her clipboard.

""Benefits of the second stage of Gene V is that you guys heal so much faster than an average person," she mentioned as she looked at me with a smile, "You are clear to return to your room, but take it easy. No picking up the twins until Doc says it is okay."
It feels like ever since I had the twins I wasn't allowed to pick them up. Of course I haven't had it easy lately either. Especially when Derik is tied to someone that just so happens to be David's jealous ex who ended up shooting me in the chest. I made a mental note to pay the witch a visit after I got out of the medical ward. But there was one place I need to go to first before I did anything.
The moment I saw them I instantly felt guilty for being away from them for a week. Granted that it wasn't my fault. I still felt like a terrible mother. What made it worse was that I couldn't hold them like I wanted to. Reminding me that Emily was going to have a visit from me very soon once I was done with the twins.
"How are you feeling?" Ashley asked as she held Alexis in her arms.
"Like I was shot in the chest," I said sarcastically and then sighed, "Sorry. I just hate that I haven't fully been able to hold my kids since I had them."
She gave me a sympathetic smile, "You'll be able to in no time now that you are fully part of the family."
I wasn't sure if it was a good thing or not. Part of me was glad that becoming part of the family fully saved my life and I would be with my children longer. But another part of me wished I had a choice in making the decision.

Then a thought came to my mind, "How did you all find me anyways?"
"I'm not sure how David found you, but I'm glad that he did," Ashley answered as she put Alexis in her crib. She then turned to look at me, "When the two of you didn't return from your date, Ricky and Mike went looking for you. They found David just waking up from being knocked out. I guess after that he ran to where ever you were dragged to."
"Where is he now?" I heard myself ask.
"Dealing with the past," Ashley answered, "It's not going to be easy on him since this whole entire time he thought she was dead."
"What will happen to her?" I kept asking questions.
Ashley shrugged her shoulders, "Your guess is as good as mine. But Erik will be executed for betraying the family since he really doesn't have a soulmate linked to him. Sadly, Emily does."
I could only imagine how that would complicate things. But there was still a question that had to be asked that we were all afraid to answer. What were we going to do about the traitor in the family? The one who started all of this had to pay the consequences but how?
The more I thought about it the more I understood why David's mother did what she did. Which made something click in my head, "She knew," I suddenly said to no one in particular, "I thought she was talking about herself. But she was talking about someone else."
Ashley looked at me confused, "Who knew?"
"Margaret," I told her.
"David's mother?" she said.
"She told me that Donny wasn't the only one to go against the family. That there have been others. She also explained that she abandoned David at the orphanage for his protection," I explained.
Suddenly it clicked in Ashley's mind and she looked at me just as shocked as I felt.
"She didn't want him to become like his father," she said in disbelief.
It also explains why Maria was never separated from Boss. He was so old school that he wasn't going to use his daughter to turn against the family. Also with David not having a strong bond with his father, Boss had to find someone else to do his dirty work. Finding and bonding with Erik was like a gift from the universe to Boss. Everything was slowly starting to make sense.

Campaign: A Project Starfarer Sidestory
This novel’s lore, story and characters are entirely fictitious. Certain long-standing countries, institutions, organizations, agencies, and public offices are mentioned, but their histories and the characters involved are wholly imaginary. "What will you do with your freedom?"Growing up in a meritocracy, infamous for being lawless, Jordan Astros had been repeatedly asked this question, since times unmemorable. In a society where one's accomplishments and skills were tallied and ranked in order to determine one's standard of living however, Jordan quickly grew to understand that 'freedom,' was a reward earned by accumulating Merit. And so, after his 17th birthday, Jordan departed his Clan's habitat in orbit of Europa to embark on his century-long journey to rise from E-Ranker to S-Rank. And spread his name throughout the Galilean Powers. *** Campaign is a sidestory within its NanoPunk parent series, Project Starfarer. (Yet to be published. Be on the lookout for it!) In which the first transhuman known to humanity, the Starfarer, invokes a plan to seed terrestrial life throughout the galaxy. Campaign takes place around the middle of that timeline and explores the life of a key figure in that universe, Jordan Astros. And explores one of four great nations thriving in the Solar System during that time. A Meritocracy that spans Jupiter and its 79 moons, The Galilean Powers. What you'll find in Campaign: Brutal melee combat in airless and pressurized low gravity environments. A technology based progression system influenced by merit and accomplishments; using tech that's theoretically possible to exist in the near-future. An exploratory perspective of the dozens of Galilean societies, or 'Powers,' from Jordans; and sometimes others', POV. What you wont find: Romance. Harems. An MC who receives shortcuts, handouts, learns things unnaturally fast or has OP plot armor. Jordan is not a special individual. Jordan is not OP and he likely never will be. He's no different than any other citizen in the Galilean Powers and will certainly face as many defeats as he does wins. He'll suffer losses and grow as an individual, while the Powers evolves around him as well. This is semi-hard sci-fi/NanoPunk and takes place in a fictional version of our future solar system. Centered around technology that's plausible in the near-centuries to come. Everything abides by the laws of physics/thermodynamics (As best that I understand them, at least. I'm no scientist.) No artificial gravity, inertial dampeners, teleportation, FTL, or hand-wavy materials will be found in the Project Starfarer universe. Just advanced automation, nanotechnology, cybernetics and AI. Set in the backdrop of space. *I do not own the photo used for the cover*
