《Traveler's Unceasing Footsteps》Chapter 8: In The Mountainside

The next day we met up in the guild to take quests and headed towards a shop that sold me a cheap spear before going out to the forest.
“We took two quest this time because we will encounter them in both place, the first one is collecting mushroom and second is wolves’ hide, the mushrooms grew deep in the forest somewhere in the territory of both wolves and the kobolds.” Denn explained as we exit the east gate.
“What kind of mushroom are we going to harvest?” I asked curious about the said mushroom.
“It's called pearl mushroom.” Denn replied. “Its delicious and all restaurants in the city adds them in some foods.”
“Can we take some for our own then?!” Bart asked.
“And where do you plan cooking it?” Alexa chided making Bart's glittering eyes dim.
“Not now cause its in the middle of the territories of both monsters with great sensing ability, we should finish taking enough mushrooms for the quest and hunt some wolves, its also a kind of practice on how we fight with a luggage in our back.” Denn answered seriously as we arrived at entrance of the forest.
We then followed the tracks evading monsters that we encountered heading straight towards the said area then we found ourselves in a rocky part of the forest where the road in front of us started to incline.
“Are we there yet?” Bart asked as he wiped out the sweat building up in his forehead.
“We're close.” Denn replied as he looked down at the map in his hands. “Wolves make their dens in these parts so be more alert.” he warned us as he resumes his steps towards the right path.
A couple of minutes later Alexa suddenly told us to stop as a pack of five wolves that are hiding in the bushes showed themselves in front of us, unlike the wolves we met yesterday their bodies are more staunch and their furs which is the color of the forest is much more vibrant perfectly hiding them in our sights, if not for Alexa's warning we would have been ambushed by them.

“Looks like they've been planning to attack us, good job Alexa. Now follow the formation that we talked yesterday.”
Denn instructed as he step forward and lowered his stance matching the wolves height, he raised both the shield in front while the sword in his side, following him I walked towards the left raising my spear and Bart in the right holding the sword in his left hand while Alexa back away a little as she nocks an arrow to her bow, this is the formation we decided yesterday after a couple of practice.
Denn holds the front, me and Bart will support him while also guarding both the sides and Alexa who will be shooting her arrows in the back from getting attacked.
Seeing us raising our weapon the wolves growl as they tried spreading apart but was stopped by Denn who ran towards them catching them off guard, Denn smacked the front most wolf to the side with his shield while another one took the sword in its head.
“Attack!”
Bart shouted following him who is already attacking another wolf which has an arrow stuck in its left eyes while I thrust my spear towards the one thrown to the side aiming for its head as it laid down on the ground and with two more thrust it stopped moving and while I am focus in stabbing this wolf to its death they already killed them all.
“Good job.” Denn praised. “We should hurry there might be another pack coming, you three help me tie these wolves in the tree.”
“Do we just left it here?” Bart asked as he took the rope that Denn given to him.
“We will first continue our quest and come back later to dismantle their hides, we can't do it in here as other wolves or monsters might show up after smelling the blood.” Denn added as he tied the rope in the tails of the dead wolf.
“What if a monster took it while were gone?” Alexa asked.
“We just need to get enough mushrooms fast then come back here quickly, if we are lucky we might not encounter any monster.” Denn replied.

We then found a tree away from where the fight have taken place and hanged the wolves carcasses there, Denn then took out something and started splashing it around the tree.
“You have 'monster repellant' and you use it for this, isn't it a waste?” seeing the thing Denn used Alexa asked him again.
“Its alright this thing is not that costly, I used it to mask the scent of blood spilling from these to throw off monsters that might want to eat it.”
After that we continued on our quest, we didn't get attacked by any monster on the way to the spot as we started plucking mushrooms while still being cautious, after a while we gathered enough mushroom for the quest and so we decided to head back where the wolves are, on the way we encountered two kobolds that are looking and sniffing the place couple of minutes later we killed them and arrived at the tree where we put our loot but we saw a creature munching of the head of one of the dead wolves hanging in the tree.
“Looks like luck is not in our favor.” Alexa said looking at the beast who have a stature bigger than two people combined with its blue fur and white stripes it stands out more against the surrounding colors making it look more majestic.
“Why we are unlucky its just a big monster we can defeat it?” Bart remarked about to take out his sword but I stopped him.
“It's not something that can be defeated by us its a Magic Beast shown from the size of it, we will need about 15 men to take that thing down.” I told him what the book that I read said about monsters like this.
“It looks like we can't do anything about it, we should go down this mountain first.” Denn said as he started stepping backwards slowly as to not alert the beast but as he about to take a step back for the third time he was pulled forward by Alexa.
“Your about to take a step in a branch.”
We then took our time to slowly get out of the mountain before we all sighed in relief.
“Sigh...truly unlucky what do we do now about the second quest?” Alexa asked as she comb her black-green hair in the back of her ears.
“We can either go back and submit the mushrooms to finish one quest or hunt the lone wolves that we can see in this area while the sun is still up, what's your choice?” Denn suggested as he took a water pouch and started drinking from it.
”Won't we get punished by the guild if we go back and only finished one quest?” I asked.
“No, we still have about six days until the guild called us out for it.” Denn replied as he passed the water pouch to me, I gave him my thanks.
“So what's your choice?” asked again by Denn looking towards Bart which I've given the water pouch next.
“I'm fine with both.” he said before he started drinking from the pouch. “Ha~ah! Its delicious.” he said.
“Hey! What about mine?!” Alexa interrupted Bart as she snatched the pouch from him but only gained a drop of it. “You drunk it all.” she said tossing it back towards Bart with a little force added.
“Looks like there's not enough water.” Denn said taking the water pouch back.
“If the guild won't punished us for not completing the quest now how about we go back and just finish it tomorrow, Alexa's need to drink water and I haven't explore the city yet so I want to use the time left until night to explore more of it.” I suggest towards the three of them.
Hearing my word they agreed and we headed out of the forest.
‘I finally have time to see more places in the city!' I thought as I continued to walking towards it.

Is History written by the victors, or by someone or something else...? *** I started writing this a few years ago and eventually fell out of love with it. I never finished it and my newer books are being written in different writing style, and genre with a more planned process. I decided to revisit it for the writathon and found that it wasn't as hopeless as I'd come to think. Hopefully, I've improved as a writer since them so the consistency may vary. Its been good to revisit and analyse my writing which I feel used to have some clunky and obvious dialogue which I'm trying to fix. This will always be my first novel and I hope, with a little exposure, I may come to like it again. Thanks for reading!
