《The French Conflict》Chapter 11: The First Day of School

After going back to my room and sleeping I woke up really tired. It was to be expected considering my sleep schedule in the forest. I went to my desk and put on the school uniform that I got yesterday from Squad 95. With a tired expression, I opened the door to start up the day. I went outside and lock the door. I turn around to see Squad 95 waving towards me. I wave back and sprint towards them. Maxime initiates a conversation with everybody.
"I wonder what classes we'll be in."
"Shouldn't you guys be in the same class? I mean you are in the same Squad" I said
"No, We all were in different classes last year" Antoine answered
As we're walking, people are looking at us like normal, but something's different today. I feel more glares at me than last time. People are talking to each other about me, they say things like "Who is that guy?" and "That guy looks pretty cool".
Looks like I successfully made myself look better, although that wasn't the point of my training I'll still take the changes. We walk to the main entrance where they've put up the classes. We manage to escape the big mass of people who were following us. I look at the big billboard showing the classes. I search for my name and find it a bit down with a stylized 95 next to it. This was probably to show that I'm a candidate for Squad 95. I look at what class and I'm apparently in class 1-E. I look at what classroom I'm in and it says B3. I've seen this placing system back in Sweden. I take my leave
"Goodbye, guys. See you later."
"Yeah, See you." Charlotte answers followed by the others.

While walking towards my building, people keep looking at me. It's starting to piss me off, slightly. Although this was kind of a dream scenario for a loner like myself.
I reach the "B" building and turn to the classroom. I open the door to find everybody already there. That makes me really nervous. Am I late? That's impossible. Everybody glares at me, I scan the room to see if I know anyone in there. I see, Sofia!? I didn't expect her to be in my class. I continue scanning only to see nothing but new faces, until I look to the top-left corner of the classroom. It's Karl. I get a spiteful look on my face, he looks at me the same way. I move towards an empty desk that's in the top-right corner of the classroom. I was surprised it wasn't taken. Didn't anybody want the seat the classic harem protagonist always have? Well, I'll take it. I sat down and waited for the teacher to enter the classroom, Meanwhile, I greeted the people around me. The person in front of me is called Marie and was from southern France, the person 45° from Marie was Sofia and the person next to my desk is a guy named Giovanni and is from the client state Italy. The teacher enters the classroom. It's a man, looking to be in his early 30's. He has slick brown hair and a mustache. He looks up to the class and says
"Hello class, I'm Frank. I'll be your homeroom and English teacher."
English!? I'm pretty damn sure England was the one who started the whole conflict. I look around the room to see if there are any reactions. Nothing. Except for Sofia who is just as surprised as I am. The homeroom is over, Frank just talked about upcoming events, including the tournament, and gave us our lesson schedule.

"What are we doing now?" I asked the people around me
"Are you deaf? He just said we're going to eat" Sofia responded
"Yeah, yeah yeah" I said in a relaxed manner
"Do you want to eat with me and Giovanni? We were thinking of eating together" Marie said
Sofia and I nodded, we then proceeded to walk to the cafeteria. On the way out I gave Karl a "I'm better than you" look, he got annoyed. Mission success
We enter the cafeteria and it's super full, but I find a place with tons of seats. Fast forward and we're eating our food, We're talking and having a good time. But things get a little awkward when Squad 95 approaches us.
"So then I say..." I stop talking because the others are looking behind me surprised. I look behind me to see that Squad 95 is standing there with their lunch in hands.
"Oh, it's you guys. Come on and sit down" I say.
The others get even more surprised looks, perhaps because I'm talking to the best squad with such a casual tongue.
"Are you sure? We don't want to disturb" Antoine says carefully.
"No, no. It's fine. Right guys?" I say and turn to the others. They all nod in silence.
"Okay then!" Camille says and takes a seat right next to me, the others sigh and sit down at the table. Marie and Giovanni whisper to each other "I can't believe we're eating with the best squad". After a couple of minutes, the mood is back and everybody is enjoying themselves again. But I have a slight issue because Camille is sitting pretty close to me, so it's awkward for me. Even though I've always thought that this would be super nice, having a girl sit very close to one, but it's more awkward than I would've thought. Charlotte notices this and drags Camille away and smiles at me stiffly. We finish our meals, We say goodbye to each other and I, Sofia, Marie and Giovanni walk towards our dorms. The dorms are divided into grades and genders. We reach the dorms and Giovanni and I say goodbye to the girls. To our surprise, it turns out we live next to each other. I enter my room and throw myself onto the bed. I suddenly remember a thing Sofia said to me today
"Don't say anything about our situation nor our powers"
"So I can tell them about the time I pinned you down?" I said jokingly
"No, you idiot!" She said and hit me in the head.
She does have a point, I can't tell nor show them anything about my situation. I must hide this from them. I decide to train the rest of the night, what else is there to do? While training I realized that I can't use all my power in the first match. That seems like an obvious thing, but still that meant that I needed to be able to defeat Jean-Pierre without using too much energy. I started training harder and more intensely. The tournament was approaching at a rapid speed and I was determined to win.

Toothpick
“Hello! My humble audience! I, the Bard of the North, am going to tell you a tale. Nothing new, nothing old. A story of a hero, some may say, others a poor boy who was hated by the world.” The storyteller paused as he waited, right timing was everything when telling a story. Pacing… Too slow and the audience became bored then left without tossing even the smallest of coins. If he spoke too fast and rushed the story. It would leave the audience confused and having no reason to be impressed. So like any good storyteller, the Bard has to do a balancing act of sorts. Not too slow, not too fast. Just perfectly in the middle. “In a shattered country in the south, a novice princeling has the ambition to mend a torn tapestry that is his birthplace. Struggling to fend off those who would usurp the throne in an unending civil war spanning centuries. A mercenary that left only death in his wake, unable to stave off the monotony and peace of life. He looks back at the path laden with bodies, wondering if it was all worth it. Wandering souls summoned by a madman, travel away from a wasteland in a foreign land, the first alone, the others as companions. A deity, ancient in her years, waiting to be freed from a duty she no longer enjoys. For all these people and their stories, none are the hero of this tale. No, the hero is not grand, not wise, not ready.. he was punished for nothing of his doing, who was an outcast that was unloved by many, including his father.” This was always the big reveal novices use to jump off into their story. He did not start here, instead, like any good fishermen, he set the bait and waited until the fish bit before pulling. As he saw the audience's eyes focus, he then started the backstory. The harness, that stopped the listeners from having metaphorical whiplash. The foreshadowing. “But that is not where the story starts. No, not even the hero's birth. Where the story begins, is the boredom of the deity, a deity many know of. She who hunts for the impossible, the guide for those who have lost the path, the Huntress of Mallon--” A small pause, a short breath. “--All old names for a single powerful being that has roamed the grounds of this continent longer than any line of kings or queens, lords or ladies. A being of worship for many an individual…” One last breath. And he began singing the first verse.
