《After being reincarnated as the strongest hero I decided to open a tavern and wait until I have to save the world!》Chapter 10: That Time I Crossed The Border

The rest of the days went by pretty quick. I got to know the girls better and talked over some stuff with Allia about possible places to go first. She recommended the capital last, seems that it isn't the oldest city or the city that is the most rich with magic.
I wonder what elven magic is like, how it differs and all from the human magic I've seen.
I wonder if they have brothels...
Or if they act all uptight
Or racism and stuff.
Maybe I shouldn't just use my old world nerd knowledge. Just a thought for the coming future.
Right about now all of us are in the carts and from Allia said an hour ago we should be here, but I'm not seeing much of a border patrol. Should I expect one?
It would make sense in my mind, world in peril, guard your territories, but maybe not.
"Stop." Allia says
Both carts grind to a halt. She hops out of hers and starts jogging forward. I hope off and follow behind not knowing what she wants to see exactly.
She suddenly stops and looks back to me, a worried look on her face. I reach her quick and see what she's looking at.
Well...
That isn't...good...
The main road we stand on goes down and the border town I guess is what you can call it, the border town is burning...
Allia tries to speak but I cut her off.
"Guess it might be time to apply that training. Be ready. I'll go look." I tell her
She nods and begins heading back
I throw my cloak behind me and summon my bow. I began to walk forward.
The town seems a little far, but I can feel the heat, don't even know how to describe it. It doesn't feel like normal fire. I squint my eyes and look ahead to scan the area.
My hearing isn't exactly super by any means, nor is my sight, but it was improved when I became the hero. I can't see anything moving, but the smoke is beginning to rise.
I break into a sprint and start closing ground pretty quick. That's when I hear the screams. They sound human and non-human at the same time. Maybe two different screams? I can't tell right now.

I think Tyra can put out the fire with some water spells, she is a druid.
I leap forward and push myself off a tree. Jumping high into the sky I get a pretty good view of what might be happening.
Everything does slow down a little as I glance around.
There, something is pounding on a large door. The screaming is coming from inside.
I latch an arrow and fire. It shoots right through the thing and it disappears. I land on one of the more intact buildings and start building hoping.
I hope the girls can get here soon, I'd rather have the fire out.
I jump off to land in a small open space between a few homes.
On ground level things look much worse. It doesn't take a genius to know that these homes were first attacked then burned.
Ah, I was already questioning it in the back of mind. Where are the corpses? The town seems a little large, but now I see it. Well, them.
A pile of burnt bodies here and a piles of burnt bodies there.
A sudden movement does almost catch me off guard. I glance to my right to see some big blob looking monster come out.
So they can blend into their surroundings? That explains why I didn't see them when in the air besides the one.
Alright. I take a breath and latch about four arrows.
Come on out...
Only the one approaches, but I have a feeling if I act now I might have more than one to deal with, but hey. Fuck it.
I spin around to face it and fire an arrow into its head. it hits dead center, just then another four pop out and begin swinging at me.
I dodge three, but the last one hits me and knocks me into one of the burning buildings. I quickly get up and fire the remaining latched arrows killing them all.
I jump back out into the open and start to dash between the buildings to get attention on me. If I'm the hero, then they might just be able to sense me.
I glance into the sky, there's nothing but black smoke in the air, but towards the edge I think I see some more normal smoke. Good job Tyra!

But as I celebrate distracted I get by something and I'm thrown through three homes and land in an unburned one.
"Fuck that stung.." I say
I get up slowly and latch an arrow. I pull back the string and fire it, killing presumably. I haven't missed yet, don't plan to.
I stumble out of the house once again into the open.
Now one of my questions right now is where the hell are the townsfolk and what the hell are those things?
I jump up the house and look around. There I can see Nyllie slithering through the water doused homes. Tyra flying up top acting a firefighter. And where's Allia and Kua?
Right about...there!
Kua and Allia running together a little bit forward heading to the building where I killed the first one of those shits. I hop to another building and start making my way there.
I see Allia using some standard weapons and why the hell isn't Kua armed! Why is she just throwing potions!
Oh..?
So they explode on impact? Holy shit did she invent bombs?
You know that does explain everytime she just disappears from my sight for hours, she does like her alchemy, but I didn't know to this degree. But she's safe, that's what matters.
"Kua! Allia!" I shout
They glance at me in the air and motion to the one building. I nod and speed up a little and soon enough I reach it. The thing isn't burning which is a relief. I look around to see some of those things closing in. Nyllie seems to be handling them fine.
I start sniping the ones coming from both sides and behind. Kua and Allia reach the doors and begin speaking Elvish. I can hear the doors open as well, seems they got in.
Think they're going to asses the population or...rather...survivors...
"Dantes." I hear Tyra say
I glance and see her, I reach out and pat her on the head.
"Good job putting out some of the fire, could you do the same for the rest of the town?" I ask
She nods and heads off. I jump off the building and land next to Nyllie.
"Doesn't that hurt your legs?" she asks
"To be honest it does hurt a little, yeah." I admit
But it is cool.
"Do you speak Elvish?" I ask her
"Eh, a little. I am rusty." she says
I nod, yeah I don't know any.
"Alright. Let's see what's inside."
I open the door and step inside.
Alright, quite a lot of them survived. Men women and the children. Why am I thinking of Star Wars right now? Anakin get out of my head!
I shake my head and look for Allia and spot her talking with some of the people.
"So, there an explanation for what happened?" I ask her
She takes a little before telling me.
"From what they told me, these were demons that just came in the middle of the day. The border guard was taken out and the town defense wasn't much, more than half the town died and they just hid here." she explained
Well..fuck.
Was I late? Could we have helped them? Should I even think about it?
"Um..h-how far is the nearest city?" I ask
"Half a day I think. Why?"
"Shouldn't we escort them there?"
"They won't come, best we can do is tell the city and they'll send some to help." she explained
What?
"What do you mean they won't come? Their homes are burned."
"Home means everything to us, Dantes." she says
In this situation that sounds fucking stupid, but I won't argue.
"Alright....alright..." I reply "Let's head back to the carts.."
Can't believe it was that simple. Save the town but they don't leave. The hell? Am I mad about this? Why do I feel mad about this? AAAAHHH!
Calm down, calm down.
It doesn't take long before we return to our carts and just like that were back on our way. How could it be that simple?

Tower of Somnus
When humanity first encountered alien life, we were judged and found wanting. The Galactic Consensus interviewed our leaders and subjected us to a battery of psychological tests to determine our progress as a society. They found us to be selfish, wasteful, impulsive, and boorish neighbors. Earth was blockaded and our collective encounter with our extrasolar neighbors rapidly faded from memory. All they left behind was a hypercomm relay and a handful of subscriptions to a massively multiplayer game that participants played in their sleep. The Consensus said that it would let us interact with our neighbors in a controlled setting. That it would teach us to be better members of the galactic community. The megacorporations that controlled Earth ignored the game until they learned that the powers earned from clearing dungeons were just as real when day broke. Magic, supernatural abilities and rumors exploded from nothing and a subscription to The Tower of Somnus became a status symbol. Katherine ‘Kat’ Debs doesn’t have much, but it could be worse.
