《Phoebe's Afterword》Chapter 8: Hospital

That went better than expected.
When I think about it, the reason I was so distressed is that in the past I was in lot a situations where people around me, my loved ones, found out something important I was hiding and reacted badly.
I'm glad they didn't.
In fact, the way they responded could be described as the total opposite of 'badly'. It's almost scary how everyone overlooks the fact that I am freaking (almost) magein wielder intelligent 3 years old.
Well, I will not complain, I'm perfectly fine if nobody cares ! No, I'm actually really happy !
The three of us talked for a few hours. And to be frank, you could summarize our conversation simply by me apologizing for everything and anything and them saying how they love me despite anything, I could or could not, be. There were a lot of tears too. If it was not for my enhanced eyes they would still be blurry.
In the end, I think each of our bloodstreams was saturated with glucose given how sugary the whole intercourse was. I seriously suspect someone got diabetes.
Aside from the cheesy stuff we also talked on a more serious note about what I missed.
Before I fell into a coma we were supposed to go visit the Mom's brother. Obviously, that didn't happen. Instead, they hastily brought me back to Urald, the city near our home I've learned, to be treated at the hospital.
As the doctors there didn't find anything wrong with my body, I was transferred to a better-equipped institution in a different city, the one I'm in right now, to do more examinations. But even there they found nothing.
By the way, the city in question is the capital: Aorl.
I will have to open a book at some point if I want to be on track with the world.
Mom and Dad decided to keep me in this hospital as it is talked as the best one in the whole country. With their job, it was not difficult for me to stay here.
Mom worked just as usual in a little apartment she rented. To receive and send the documents she worked with she used this world equivalent of fax. A magical equivalent one of course.
And for Dad, he's usually not often at home so It didn't really change a thing.
That about what happened to me in these 3 years. Not much.
Even if they didn't tell it explicitly, these years were pretty rough for both of them. Dad got nearly fired after one year because of his falling productivity, and he started to drink more frequently.
Mother buried herself with work, trying not to always think of her daughter in the hospital.
Looking at the window, it's already night. I should try to sleep. In a few days, everything will get back to normal.
Tugging myself in the blanket a bit too big for my size, I close my eyes and soon fall in the depth of slumber. Nights here are pretty cold, even with whatever they are using to regulate the heat of the room.
But there is something likable about this cold, it always makes my muscles a bit rigid which makes morning stretch a blissfully good.
"Gnnnnn." Extending my arms far above my head, I slowly opened my eyes. Looking around my room, my eyes are welcomed by the sight of a woman sitting on the comfortable-looking reddish armchair near the window, sipping a cup her eyes looking at the city.

"Oh, you are awake. Did you sleep well Silvia?" She asked me, taking another sip.
"I did, thank you for asking. Are you here for something Claudia?" I asked her, resting my hands on my lap.
"Can't I freely visit my little protégé?" She laughed, putting her cup on the wooden table filled with food she was sitting by.
"When did I become your protégé?" I asked squinting my eyes.
"Ah! Since I decided you were mine! Anyway, I was waiting here to fetch you for your last examination. When you are done with it you will be authorized to leave if there is nothing wrong." She answered me, refilling her cup of what appears to be coffee.
"At last, I can't wait to leave this boring place! But don't you have anything better to do than waiting for a random girl to wake up?" I asked, curious.
"Random girl eh? Well not really, even though I'm kind of the boss here my subordinates do most of the work, all the work. I'm just here to make sure nobody makes too big errors like the one they did with you." She explained to me.
"I see, you have it easy huh ?" I mocked, putting a hand in front of my mouth to hide my grin.
"I'll have you know my work is of the utmost importance!" She pouted while putting an unholy amount of sugar in her cup. "Anyway, let me finish my cup and we can go. Come take a bite, I didn't bring all this food to eat it alone."
Slowly putting my feet on the ground, I stand up and walk toward the loaded table.
Now that I think about it, it's the first time I walk. Last time I tried it was a bit more, er, floor-tasting. Perhaps it was because I tried to walk just after my wake, who knows.
Sitting on the armchair opposite to Claudia's one, I fill myself a glass of freshwater and spread a generous amount of I-don't-know-what jam on a slice of bread. Taking my first bite. "That, that what I call food. At long last, I will not have to drink this demonic milk anymore."
"Milk? Ah yes, you speak of 3 years ago when you were just a toddler. You didn't like it "
"It'sh not that it was bad in taste but having to fill my stomach with the same thing every day for months gets old fast." I answered chewing a piece of the coated piece of bread. Delicious.
"I'll try to remember that if I ever have a kid."
"You don't have kids? You seem pretty ol-" I was about to say before Claudia interrupt me with a finger hastily pressed on my lips.
"Shhhh, Don't say it. But yes I don't have any, with the very hard and monotonous work I have I don't have time for that. No time at all!" She blurted with fervor, almost as if she was trying to convince herself of something.
Ooh I see, so it's like that. I understand your pain, Claudia!
Letting myself out of her finger I take a sip of water. "Yeah, sure."
"It's true !" She cried. "Wait, why do I argue with a child?" She mumbled to herself and staring at nothing.

I'm sure she will be fine eh. What I want now is to know of what is made this jam, I never tasted anything like this. Let's not waste it.
Making myself more slices, I raised my eyes at Claudia. "When will be the tests?"
"Ah yes, that. When you are finished with your breakfast you can directly go to do them." She told me after clearing her throat a bit.
"Nice, give me a few seconds." I said before swallowing like a sinking hole everything that was on my plate. Don't underestimate my appetite.
Tiding myself up, Claudia and I left the room. I can finally something else than my room!
The whole corridor is painted in white, even here the hospitals are like this mh? Some would not think too much about it but these kinds of coincidence always surprise me.
This place has a pretty huge garden I note, looking at the big windows. I can see a lot of patients walking in it, some simply sitting on the benches. Other playing games with each other.
As I was absent-mindedly walking along with Claudia, she suddenly stops us in front of a blue door. "Still here Silvia? We are here."
"Ah yes, I was just looking around." I nodded. "So, what do I have to do?"
She pointed out the door. "You enter here, someone will take care of you. He will take a look at your magein to see if there is nothing wrong with it so don't worry too much, and it's not painful." She explained to me.
"Thank you for telling me, see you in a bit." I said as I was entering the room.
The room is not very big, smaller than my room actually. Like every other room in this hospital, it's painted white. It's empty but for two chairs facing each other and a table with a hexagonal crystal placed in the middle of it.
I guess I have to sit in one of them.
Soon after I positioned myself on one of the white chairs, a man entered the room the same I did. It's a pretty tall man, about 185 centimeters as a wild guess. He looks old too but not the kind of "pain in the back" old, the badass type with a silvery beard and nice muscles.
"Hello little Silvia, I will take care of you today." He told with a gentle smile as he was sitting in the chair in front of me.
Because of Claudia it feels a bit weird to be treated like a child so suddenly.
"Yes !" I simply replied a smile at my lips too.
"It will only take a few minutes don't worry, you just have to put one of your hands on the funny thing." He told me pointing at the hexagonal on the table. "Can you do that for me ?"
I nodded. I wonder of what this crystal is made of, is it even a crystal?
Extending my left arm I try to reach the crystal but I am too small to reach it, the table being too wide. Curse you my child body!
Putting my hands on the chair, I stand upon it. Being tiny sure is not easy.
Touching the crystal with my left hand, I feel a strange sensation across my whole body.
"Good, now you will feel a bit weird but don't worry it will only last a few moments !" He told me as he put one of his hands on it too.
He knows how to reassure people eh.
Just as he said a strange sensation, just like the first one, sat inside me. I feel it moves through my left hand, no arm.
Don't tell me it's magein? I didn't know you could put in others' bodies, or maybe it's thanks to the crystal he can do it?
Well, there is no use resisting him so I will just leave him to do his thing.
I don't know what you can do when you have your magein in someone else's body but I think I will try to find a way to prevent my body to be invaded like that, just in case.
As I was thinking of ways of doing that, I felt his magein reaching my heart. He should have reached it sooner though.
The "few moments" he was speaking me of are pretty long.
Ah, I see. My own magein is slowing him.
I guess it's not everyone that has magein flowing through their veins. I suppose the magein in my blood act as wall repelling his.
Well, at least I now know that if some ill-intentioned person tries to put their magein in me they won't have it easy.
Let's make it easier for him shall I.
I focus on where his magein is, it looks like a little ball. I gather a bit of magein around it and push the whole thing toward my heart. Making my magein flow in the opposite direction it normally does hurt a little bit but that bearable. What wouldn't I do to help others huh?
"Wha- what is happening" The silver-haired man exclaimed suddenly with a tint of panic in his voice.
His magein now near my heart I let go of mine.
"Just a few seconds and it will be done, Silvia." He told me with a smile hiding a sigh.
I feel his magein inside my heart, I wonder what is here so interesting here. It doesn't do anything in particular, it's just sitting here.
"And we are done! You can take your hand off now and leave. But take this before leaving you deserved it for behaving well." He told me, handing me a candy he had in one of his pockets.
What? He didn't do a thing! Did I miss something?
Taking the candy I hastily leave the room. Claudia was indeed waiting for me, leaning against the wall lazily.
"Oh, you're back. Took longer than I thought it would. How was it? " She gets up.
Sighing. "At first it was weird, then boring and at the end surprising."
"You will tell me why in your room, we have to prepare your bag for your departure. You will leave tomorrow's dawn."
Walking back to my room, I am reminiscing everything that happened to me since the beginning.
I can't wait to leave.

Fallout: Vault X
An original novel set in the Fallout universe, written to be accessible to all, featuring unique people and places. Vol.II. out now Fallout: Vault X tells the story of John. A vault dweller, who spent every day of his twenty five years underground. Like his father, and his father before him. Proud to live in the last remaining bastion of humanity, all that survived The Great War of the atomic age. Hidden deep below the surface of the earth, toiling under brutal conditions. Year after year, decade upon decade. All to expand into the natural cave system the Vault occupied, building for the future. However, John knew what his forefathers did not, that everything he’d been taught was a lie. After finishing school at the age of ten, John received his standard issue pipboy. An arm mounted personal computer, worn by everyone in the Vault. Used to coordinate the relentless pace of expansion, needed to work as an apprentice. To learn the craft that would be his life’s work. A noble calling to ensure a future for all that remained of the human race. A quirk of fate saw John equipped not with the crude, clunky, pipboy model his father wore. That almost everyone around him wore. His looked smaller, sleeker, finished in a jet black sheen. And capable of doing far more than its drab counterparts. The world above had been ravaged by atomic flames, yet life clung to its bones. The Red Valley fared better than most in the century since the bombs fell. The clean water and rich soil protected by rolling hills. All spared from direct strikes, for the most part. Life survived here. Trees spawned from charred ground, misshapen, green leaves turned red. Along with simple crops, grown wild at first, then cultivated by the survivors. The scavengers of the old world were inventive, hardy people. All determined to rebuild in the ruins of a world they never knew. In the decades that passed settlements emerged. They grew, spreading along the valley floor. Reclaiming the pre-war remnants of the once industrialised heartland. Salvaging the robotic wonders of a bygone age to build their walls and work their fields. To protect them in the dark of the wasteland. But such things are uncommon in this world, and the rarer something is, the greater its value. And the worth of pre-war technology had not gone unnoticed. The last, real, power in this world rested in the mechanised hands of The Brotherhood of Steel. Forged from the mortally wounded old world military. The Brotherhood used its access to the weapons made for a conflict no one won to strike out into the wastes. Men and women were equipped with advanced armour, aerial transportation, high grade weaponry. Accompanied by the training, strength, and will, to put them to use. They established chapters and set up outputs far and wide. All dedicated to a single purpose. To ensure the technology left abandoned by its long dead creators didn’t fall into the wrong hands. Namely, any hands that were not their own. This is the world John escaped into. A place of horrors brought forth from atomic fire. A place where survival meant battling against the darkness. Fighting a war each day to get to the next. And war...war never changes
