《Transient Fire Works》Chapter 3: The Skilled Hobo

-7:00 am-

To summarize what happened in the morning, I woke up around 3:00 am, did my usual morning exercise routine, freshened up myself and my living space. All this took around two hours. I forgot to say that she also brought out a bunch of men's clothes for me to wear when she was treating my wounds. They were a little loose and it seems as though the previous owner was slightly taller than me. When it was 5:05 am, I decided to prepare food. But I was disappointed when I saw the remaining ingredients in the fridge so I improvised. I took the pink apron that was hanging on the wall and tied it on. I could've made noodles but I deemed that it was too heavy for breakfast.

Later, the woman who saved me woke up and was attracted to the smell in the kitchen. I was surprise because when I heard her footsteps walking right into the kitchen, I saw her face and her eyes were still closed! She did not even hit a single object along the way!

I had to admit. Even I don't have that talent yet. I would've hit every single wall, object, and door along the way if I had to navigate my way with my eyes closed.

But when she saw me, she had a look of disbelief. She could not believe that I could make so many with so little ingredients. So she picked up the bread and took a chomp. I didn't even eat yet and she already ate half the bread! Must've smelled that good just to eat half a bread without taste testing it first.

Seeing that she liked the bread so much, I didn't care anymore. So I asked her if it was good and displayed the best smile I could present.

At first, I saw her angry face and was about wipe the smile away. I knew that she was the type of person who hates to admit things. But I knew that I can't run far so I kept the smile on and stayed in one place. Just as she turned around, I prayed hard that she would not pull out any weapons like she did yesterday.

When she did turn around, her anger just went away and had a dazed look.

'Eh? She's not going to beat me up?'

At that moment, I knew that look. That was the same look I usually get when I smile at other people.

'Is this my chance to show a better impression?' I thought to myself

I slowly close the distance between us until it was about an inch apart. Or at least what I thought to be an inch.

When I got close enough, her face immediately flustered and she ran right into the bathroom and locked it right away.

But when she ran, I saw something falling off her head.

'Huh? She wore a wig? Her wig fell off because she ran so fast? She really had golden hair?'

*Pfft* She ran so fast that her blue wig fell off. I wanted to roll and laugh. But what made me truly laugh was that she looked like an innocent girl for that moment.

When she'd realize that she dropped her wig, she ran back as fast as she could to get it back. Not even taking a second to look at my face, she ran right back into the bathroom and locked herself in it again.

I really thought that this morning was interesting. I showed a good impression and she showed me another side to herself. What is the one word to describe how I felt right now? 'SUCCESS!!!!!'

-----------------------------------------------------------

A few minutes later, she finally got out the bathroom looking like a new person. I was also surprise. She didn't put on the blue wig. Don't get me wrong, she looked good in the wig, but she looked better with golden hair.

She walks over to the table placed with food and started to eat without even saying a word to me.

'Why is she giving me the cold shoulder now?'

I really don't like cold atmospheres. So I blurted out, "What is your name?" based on the work ethnics I grew up, asking one's name is the best way to break the ice if not hello. But to my surprise, she was angrier. Why?

-Fifteen minutes later-

Things were still silent. She still didn't want to talk to me no matter what I ask. So I stood silent for fifteen minutes. Seeing how she was enjoying the food, I smiled for fifteen minute straight. But her face showed that she was annoyed because I smiled for so long.

I frown slightly. It seems that my presence is just not welcome at the moment. So I started to go out the door to begin job hunting. I like how she was enjoying my food, I just didn't like standing around for nothing.

*kach*creeaaak* This door is really weird. Not only does it make a weird sound when I twist the knob, the door also creaked.

"Hm? Where are you going?" she said.

"I thought that you were too mad to speak to me. So I'll just go job hunting now. The sooner I leave, the better you'll feel" I lightly responded and quickly left out the door. *shut*

“Idiot… I was mad because you couldn’t even remember my name despite knowing me for so long and being a smart person with some skills” the woman said sadly after he left.

-8 hours later-

After Jin left the house, he went to find a job for four hours straight and he became very tired. Every job he applied to, they rejected him. But there were places that needed a helping hand. So he helped them out and they gave a reward in return. He did this for the next four hours.

The restaurants he helped gave him a bunch of food and some tips for helping. The tailor shops just gave thanks or a piece of clothing. Super markets gave him some fruits and vegetables or bottles of milk. As for other places, they just gave a little bit of money, random trinkets, or a plain old thank you.

“Haaaaaaaaaaaa……” Letting out a long sigh, he also stretch out his arms and legs. Jin could not believe it. The area had a ton of shops, a variety of jobs, many that needed help but he was still rejected.

The thing that Jin does not know is that in the area that he was applying for jobs had a volunteer system. Volunteers can help for free, be paid however the owner wishes, and the payment type can range from little to a lot. But who was willing to pay a volunteer a lot? For the volunteered helpers, they really got little back. Sadly, Jin did not find this out until the end of the day.

‘I really hope that I won’t end up with a cramp later on in all four limbs for “volunteering” for their jobs…. Why did I not know this system exist? I’ve worked for a long time. When did this volunteer system come out?’

He also later on found out that the volunteer system came out two months ago and was enforced a month later. Cursing his luck, he regretted traveling so far to just find a job.

He slowed down his walking pace and relaxed his mind before sitting down on a large flat circular rock that was about three feet high.

Thinking back to his middle school years, he tried his best to remember her. But there were too many blondes in school. Blonde was a popular color in his school. But try as he might, he knew one too many people who had blonde hair. No one in his school had blue hair.

'Did I really know that woman since middle school?'

‘No matter how much I try to recollect my memories, I can't seem to remember her.’

'No matter. I'll remember in time.' I thought to myself as I got back up and walks down the streets. Compared to the city, I've always liked the calm suburban life.

Everywhere I look, I saw children playing, people running, or adults fighting. Now that I think about it, I became an adult not too long ago. Can one really be counted as an adult just because he or she is eighteen? I’ve seen many people who are eighteen that acts just like a kid and a ten year old who acts like a middle aged man. Is it a difference in mentality? Or is it a difference in living circumstances? Or maybe it is just how a person is born?

As a child, we were raised and trained to learn how to survive in the world. To grow up studying, earn a bit of reputation, become of age, get a job you could hate but acts honestly and diligently, earn money for the rest of your life working earnestly, finding someone you could love with all your heart, grow old peacefully, then retire. That is the ideal life of the ancient world. But no family I’ve seen lives like that.

In this era, all I see are those who prefer to live those short lived happy moments and do not care about the future. People in this era mostly marry those who they might not love, cares little for reputation, get a job and quit just as fast, have little to no one to love, and sometimes lives hopelessly without someone else beside them, and die either young and quick or old and sad.

“Is it so wrong?” an aged voice behind me said.

“!”

But when I turn around, no one was there.

“!!???”

I really thought it was someone behind me.

I shook my head. “Ha ha… I must be going crazy.”

So I ended my job hunt for today. It’s too tiring to walk so far without rest. I acquired some food as compensation so I was definitely not going to go hungry for a long time.

But there was something that Jin did not know as well. He went as far as five miles that day! Not five miles in a straight line or as total distance, but in a radius! He helped a lot of shops as a volunteer doing a lot of random work that he was soon known as the skilled hobo. Not that he was homeless. But because he was jobless. But this was something he would discover in the near distant future.
