Chapter 10 - Humans and Beasts

I looked at the menu that was handed over to me. The names are all foreign. Seeing the confused look on my face a young waitress stepped up to help, “Customer, most items listed in the first page of the menu are from mutated beasts. Most of them are more preferred for humans while the second page are for beasts.”

I flip the page of the menu and saw some weird names as well. Yep. I'm still confused. I can see the waitress professional smile somewhat twitching.

“Hahahahaha!!” A rude person’s laughter rang out from in front of me.

“Don't mind her. She's new in town,” Hydee leans over to the waitress and whispered loud enough so I could hear, “also, I think she is a loner type.”

“What do you mean by that?” I feel the heat rising up inside due to anger.

“I mean your species seems to be pretty unique for there not to be anyone to teach you about these things of course.” Hydee said with a straight face.

My face is now burning up due to embarrassment. I misunderstood her. I’m pretty sure my entire face is red.

‘Huh? Species? Rare? Teaching?’

Hydee nodded, “Usually we, as humanoid beasts, are born nearby or would be set to meet with another species that are similar to us to help teach us how to survive as beasts in this world. Humanoid beasts are similar to humans except we don’t really have a particular place we’d call home like a city. We usually gather together as nomads out in the world facing against other beasts for food and shelter or mingle in with the humans in their cities.”

My eyes widen with the interesting new information. When I used to be a human I never knew that there were beasts in the city already. Perhaps the government knew yet they kept it from us? I mean, mutated humans were said to be all captured and taken in by the government and MBCF to train to become soldiers.

“Well as beast we don’t really enjoy human’s food so there are particular restaurants throughout the city that provide food for us because we still need food to live. The most common food choice for beasts would be called Manhu. These are usually made from human meat since most beats enjoy human meat.” Hydee nodded.

“Lukkan is something more specific and ones foxes enjoy. I mean most of beasts food consist of human ingredients mixed with some vegetables. Lukkan is liver steak.” Hydee winked.

“I see. That’s nice to know. How can such a restaurant keep running in the midst of human territory?” I questioned.

“They have their own methods. How should I know? I don’t run the restaurant.” Hydee replied carelessly.

Hydee shared a lot of information that I never knew existed with me over dinner. I did try and order some lungs but unfortunately most beasts don’t eat those so they don’t have any. They did say they will try and get some next time if I plan on becoming a regular customer. The pricing for beast’s meals was actually much more expensive.

As I walked out of the restaurant with Hydee I realized that I was completely caught up in Hydee’s pace.

“Where are you going now?” I asked her.

She turned back with a smile but her eyes were cold, “I’ve done what I needed and told you some info. Don’t think that this makes us friends or anything. What I do next doesn’t concern you in the least bit. You can meet me if you go to the Angel’s Voice Orphanage and ask for me from the head lady, Lucy, there. You can say that I’m responsible for your actions here in the city for now because I was assigned to it.”

She rushed at me suddenly, which caused be to back up and bump into the alleyway wall. She then trapped me between her arms and stared down coldly at me, “So be a good girl and DON’T cause me any troubles now that you got the information. I’m sure you are a smart girl.”

I felt cold sweat pouring out as I gulp in fear. Hydee’s aura isn’t normal. Why am I feeling fear? I’m getting angry at myself for fearing something like this. Soon the anger at myself outweigh the fear I felt from instinct. I swatted her arms away.

“Why should anyone be responsible for my own actions. I don’t need it. You think you’re all important just because you gave me some information? I don’t need it. I am only in this human city for one goal. I could care less what happens to anyone else.” I stated coldly.

Right. I almost forgot why I am here. How could I forget? I am an idiot. Friends? Who needs them? All I need are people who are willing to be my puppets.

Hydee gave out a cold smile, “Now you are looking more like a beast. Not like those disgusting humans.”

Hmm? It seems I unconsciously reverted into human ways. Was it because I’ve tried too hard not to stand out and to blend in? Or was it cause I met some old friends and have been living with humans for so long?

Time is almost up. I need to start moving.

I looked up at Hydee who was a little bit taller than me, “Thank you for reminding me.”

“Reminded you? No. All the beasts that are in a human city has a goal.” Hydee backed away and turned, “And it seems like you have a pretty interesting goal.”

She then left the alleyway and mixed into the crowd of humans who were clueless about what’s to come.

I took a deep breath to calm my mind. I still have a lot I need to do and I don’t have enough time for it all. I glanced at the blue screen once more, then I turned to look at the crowd of humans moving to and fro in the lit up street. Hidden and alone in the dark alleyway, I decided that I need to gain more time.
