Chapter 9 - Humanoid Beasts

Did I pass? Who do you think I am? I am a Siren of course I passed with my singing. I am still worried about Hydee though. I thought as I followed after the lady who lead me into a room filled with a few people.

I looked into the room but I couldn't see Hydee anywhere.

“Excuse me,” I asked the lady who led me here, “ is there a different room with more people who passed?”

She looked at me and shook her head, “There's only this room.”

I took another look around before I could ask another question the lady turned around and left. There weren't many people in this room. Possibly just five or six.

‘But where is Hydee?’ I wondered.

“Hey, you, girl over there, are you looking for someone?” A baritone voice asked.

“Ehh. Ah, yes, I was looking for a girl with dark make-up. I saw her pass the first audition but I can't seem to find her now.”

“Hehe, she might have a sponsor in here already so she gets a freebie and don't have to take any more auditions.” The man laughed with his low voice.

“So, what made you pass the first audition?” The man continued. He seems like he really wanted to continue a conversation with me, but I am too worried about what Hydee knows.

I didn't bother replying but just gave a small smile while my eyes continue to wander around the room in hopes of seeing that familiar figure. I think my silence indicated what I wanted so the guy kept quiet afterwards.

The door opened and a familiar man who auditioned people earlier came in.

“Hello newbies, I'm sure you know why we at WMW Entertainment recruited you.” He said with a smile completely different from the time he interviewed people the first time.

“Hahaha!” The man from earlier laughed loudly like he knows something.

I am confused. Did I miss anything when reading the WMW Entertainment advertisement? Perhaps my unclear facial expression showed; the man went on to explain.

“We at WMW Entertainment recruit people that are unique in some way or form. We can tell some of you humans are mutated in one way or another. We don't care who you are or what you have done, but now that you work for us we expect a lot from you.”

He gave a bright smile towards the five of us and continued, “ I am sure you know that even though we are called an Entertainment business that is not all we run. We have expanded much in the last few years. And that is thanks to the cooperation between our business and you all. I hope for a good cooperation.”

I was absolutely shocked. I never knew that WMW entertainment has something to do with humans that have mutated. I thought all of mutated humans were controlled by the government. Oh no, does that mean they noticed that I was different?

Good job, Sarah, great job. I want to facepalm. Well there goes my stay unnoticed idea. But I guess this means that weird abilities aren't uncommon. Does this make me, as a beast, any different from a human mutant? Of course I forgot the fact that I can eat humans with no remorse.

We were then given a contract to finalize our cooperation. After reading and signing the form we were free to leave.

“We will assign to you a manager by tomorrow. Your work schedule will be given to you by your manager. You may return home now.” The man said happily.

I was in a daze as I walked out of the building. Suddenly, I was pulled into a corner. As reflex, I wanted to yell but my mouth was covered by hand.

I panicked for a bit before I realize who was it that captured me. It was the familiar face of Hydee.

Shhhhhhhh

She gestured. I nodded in understanding. She slowly release her hand.

“Hydee! How did you know?!” Was the first thing that came out from my mouth.

Shhhhhhhh

She gestured in panic again. She then looked around before pulling me into the alleyways and then into a small store in the alleyway.

She then turned around and looked at me with a weird smile, “Heya! Been some time since I met another beast in this human city.”

My eyes widen in shock. Ehh? Does that mean Hydee is a beast as well? Perhaps my face showed everything I thought, Hydee answered my question.

“Don't get me wrong, there are many other beast in the city. I just haven't seen any new ones arrive lately.” She lives in closer to me and sniffed, “and surely none as powerful and unique as you as well.”

I grabbed onto her hands, “you're a humanoid beast too?!” I was excited, I've never seen another humanoid beast ever since my rebirth.

“Ehh, yeah. You can say I'm kinda a fox beast.” It seems she got embarrassed from my excitement.

I am not alone. I cheered within my heart. I didn’t even notice how lonely I had felt when I thought I was the only one who was different.

“You’ve never met any other humanoid beasts before?” Hydee asked curiously.

I shook my head.

“That’s weird. You’d be surprised how many humanoid beasts are out there. But since you seem to have come from the ocean I guess that makes sense. Also most beast would use some sort of signal to recognize each other besides from instinct.” Hydee nodded like she realized something.

“That’s why you were so rude.” Hydee looked at me.

“Rude? How? When?” I was utterly confused.

Hydee gave a small laugh, “I sent you a signal when I met you but you completely ignored me so I got a little grumpy. Hehe.”

I tilted my head to try and remember about the signal she said. Ah, it must have been when I first saw her. I did notice a different gaze but it was fleeting and I thought nothing of it.

I lowered my head in shame, “I’m sorry.”

“Haha, no worries. I understand the reason now.” Hydee waved it off.

“I’d like a serving of Lukkan please!” Hydee then ordered something. I was too excited with the new information that I did not notice at all what kind of shop we were in. I looked around and it seems to be a small restaurant in a small alleyway.

“Oh and a menu for the new customer!” Hydee added after thinking, “Psst, this restaurant is run by and for humanoid beasts that live inside this human city. There’s bound to be something you’d like so look at the menu!”

“Sarah. My name is Sarah.” I introduced myself.

“My bad. My name is Hydee.” Hydee gave out her hand for a handshake with a smile.

“Hydee, why are you so nice to me? I mean I have probably met some other humanoid beasts before but they completely ignored me for being ignorant.” I was curious. I do not believe in free things.

Hydee stared at me as the waiter brought out something that looked like medium rare steak. She gave a mysterious smile and started eating. I felt a chill up my spine. I should be careful around her. Fox. Foxes are cunning and devious.
