《A Trillion Trillion Years》Chapter 4: Strange Things Roam in The Shadows

My legs hurt. There was a lot of walking and driving and waiting to be done as an assistant to an actress. Although most of it wasn’t because of the job (it was mostly Leslie).

Even when I had my break she would make me do something.

Ah. I had to go somewhere she would never find me. Why did she have a knack for knowing where I was when she needed me?

After the 3rd day of searching during my break I found myself the perfect spot.

The company was renovating a wing of its building. Apparently they were doing so well that they could afford to open an entirely new area for their producers to work in. Of course it was still under construction. At least some part of it was. I found an area that was “sectioned off” but was completed enough I wouldn’t be afraid of something falling on my head.

There I sat. On a bench for construction workers. Eating my daily lunch box that I bought for 4.99 at the local k-mart. They had solid deals if you thought about it. How many times could you get a healthy and mind refreshing meal for as little as 4.99? Really they were best.

I looked at the entire area around me. It was actually pretty dark. The only light came from the windows to the outside. It seems like they still hadn’t done any of the electronic work here. Well I was never one to be scar-

Wait. What was that. Something just moved in the dark. I stood up. Cautious, I walked toward it. If it was an intruder I would have to subdue them (I would probably just run and yell) but I couldn’t risk anybody coming to hurt Abby. There are a lot of sicko stalkers that would love to get a look at her private day to day.

I took my food and followed it. At first I followed its footsteps. Then its shadow. As I walked toward it I could see it hunched over something. Slowly I went behind it.

“Hey, what are you doing!?” I blurted out.

“Ah!” she screamed. “You scared me!”

Ah. Could it be. It was Emily. I recognized her avoidant eyes. It looked like she was setting up her food so she could sit on a ledge and eat it.

The last time I saw her everything was covered so it took me a second to recognize her. It looked like she had complete make-up on. I could see her slightly big nose and innocent smile. The rays of sunlight passed through her blonde hair as it bobbed gently against her shoulders. Did this company only hire beautiful women?

“Sorry.” I said “I see that you aren’t the only one who decided to get away from your boss.”

“Yea..”

There was an awkward silence. “Well, I’m going to go back.”

“You can stay!” she said in a loud voice. “Sorry..I…you can stay and talk. I really don’t have much else to do, and, you know, company isn’t a bad thing. How was your day with Leslie? Is she still a pain to be around?”

“Yea, yea. She is actually not that bad.” When I do the math. Leslie+Abby=good. It would be amazing with just Abby but even getting a daily glimpse of Abby is well worth being whipped occasionally.

She giggled. “That's not what I heard. I heard she was horrible. She must suck.”

“Yea, she kinda sucks.” I looked down and picked the pickle out of the my food. K-mart actually loved putting pickles in their food. Its disgusting. “So what do you do? I’m assuming you’re a producer?”

“Well…you can say that. I’m actually in an idol group.”

“Cool.”

“We’re called first island.”

“I haven’t really heard of it, but it sounds cool. I’m not really into idol groups.”

“Oh. I thought that's why you talked to me. You’d be surprised how many people join the company only to get along with one of us.”

“Really?”

“Yea. Usually they end up getting fired for not doing their job, or for stealing something from us. That's why its so hard to find managers.”

“That's so strange, how could anybody base their entire life on meeting one person. That's completely nonsensical. They must be insane!”

Fuck.

“Have you really not heard of us?”

“I’m really not into idols and all that.” Which is true. I am only into Abby. It has nothing to do with her having been an idol. I wanted her for the longest time. She just happened to be an idol.

“Well, good for you.”

I took a bite out of lettuce and corn. The salad was good. “Why aren’t you with the group? You’re made-up and everything.”

“Well I just…you know it sometimes good to be alone. You can’t be with people all the time you know.”

“I get it.” Sometimes I wished I could just block Leslie from existence. It kinda makes sense. “You don’t need to be with people all the time.”

“Yea..anyway, enough about me.” She took another bite of her sandwich. “Why did you decide to get into this company. I know that not many people would be willing to take a temp position unless they really loved working in entertainment.”

Well to be truthful all I want is to be with this one woman so much that I have dedicated my entire career to her. I will forever die trying to get Abby to be my wife. “You know, It just came out of nowhere and I needed a job. So I said why not.”

“Well..I guess that's as good a reason as any other.”

“And you?”

“I loved singing and dancing since I was a kid.” she brightened up as she spoke. “I really couldn’t be anything else. And now I get to sing all I want, come up with music, dance all day. Really there isn’t a better job out there in the world.”

“I’m glad you enjoy it.”

“Thanks.”

I took the last bite of my salad. It was okay. I would have given it a better rating if they didn’t put in pickles. “Well I have to get back to work. I wouldn’t want Leslie to…get difficult because I took such a long break.”

“Yea this was fun…”

“Yep see you later.”

“Yea.”

I started to walk away before I heard footsteps run behind me.

“Actually here.” She gave me a note. It was blank. “Could you write your number? I don’t get many people who I can talk to..and I really liked talking to you. Ah..My boyfriend is just like that but we don’t get the time to talk to much.”

I was confused. But I wrote down my phones number. “Here. You can text me anytime you want. I don’t know. Maybe I’ll see you around.”

“Well, we probably will, this is, you know, just in case we don’t. I don’t know.”

“Yea.”

I walked away, with an empty salad bowl, back to the maze. I had still not gotten used to how many hallways there were in this company. I just guessed my way around until I found myself back to an angry Leslie.

Well. I didn’t know if she was angry. But she always was….
