《Iridescent (E. Cullen)》Chapter Fourteen

It's stopped raining by the time Zenaida pulls up at school the next day, but the threat of more rain is in the sky and the atmosphere. This is not something she has missed about Earth, the wet and damp weather. Asgard was always bright sunshine and warm weather. She pulls off her helmet and shakes out her hair before glancing around the parking lot. She can see the Cullen vehicles pulling into parking spaces. She lets out a breath and closes her eyes. She knows that today has the potential to be really long. She opens her eyes, ready to deal with whatever the day brings her. She swings her leg over the bike and steps straight into a puddle as she stands. She pulls a face as she shakes her foot, flicking the water droplets from her boot. That's a great way to start a day she is dreading. She doesn't feel like Emmett is going to let it go that she called him and his family out. She wouldn't in his situation. She would want a full conversation in which everything is laid out before them. So they all knew where they stood. She wouldn't be surprised if he tries it today. Bella's truck makes its usual entrance. All loud and rumbling. It is hard to miss when it makes that sort of noise. It has that sort of presence. Even in this town. Even in this parking lot of older models. That says something about that truck. She looks over at the truck and smiles softly. At least people will hear it coming and won't get in the way of it. It means there is a much smaller chance of Bella hitting anyone in it.

"Camille is playing at the outdoor theatre" Emmett comments causing Zenaida to turn to him, utterly surprised by his appearance at her side. But still, he is a vampire at the end of the day, anything he does shouldn't surprise her.

"Excuse me?" She asks him, looking at him utterly confused. She assumed with her pointing out that he's a vampire that things would change between them, but he is still here, probing her about the school dance, which is supposed to be the girl's choice. She's not sure any of the boys got that memo. Considering.

"Camille is playing at the outdoor theatre the night of the dance" He elaborates, she is still frowning at him and crosses her arms over her chest.

"Are you asking me or telling me?" He tilts his head and then shrugs.

"Asking" He admits. "If you don't want to go to the dance....perhaps we could see a movie together"

"Like a date?" She counters, he hums and nods. "You remember that I pointed out that I knew you are a vampire" She reminds him. He nods again. "You don't want to talk about that?"

"I do" He admits and then glances over at his family, all of them are standing together at their cars, half watching Emmett and Zenaida, and the others watching Edward who talks with Bella at her truck. Zenaida turns to look at the other Cullens. Alice waves at her. "They do" Emmett adds. She knew that they wouldn't let that knowledge go without issue. It's a big secret to reveal that she knows. Rosalie turns from watching Edward and Bella to glare at Zenaida who snorts a little.

"I can guess how that's going to go down" She turns back to Emmett. "I don't feel like getting crazy murdered today, so I'm going to pass on that talk...and I'm going to pass on Camille"

"You really think we're going to hurt you?" Emmett asks her.

"You're vampires" She argues and sets her helmet down on her bike. "There are tons of movies and books and mythology that give me my odds"

"I would never hurt you" Emmett promises. It is the last thing he wants to do here. He's actually come to really like Zenaida, and he understands her caution. But he wouldn't hurt her. That's the whole point of the life that he lives, that the family lives. They live the way that they do because they don't want to hurt people. She looks at him. She really wants to believe him. Because up until yesterday, she was clearly fine with the vampire thing, but then she admitted it out loud and she feels different about it. It was easier to ignore when she acted ignorantly to the whole thing. "We were friends before yesterday" She pulls a face and shrugs. She's not sure they were there yet, but sure, they were friends. "You liked me, right?" He asks her, she lets out a breath. She does like him. He's funny and sweet and enjoys sports as much as she does and enjoys mechanics and movies and music, and they do share a lot in common. She nods and lets out a breath. She does like him. From the moment she saw him, there was something here. "Does it really matter that much?" He asks. "You like me, I like you...."

"It matters" She argues and looks up at him. "You know it does..." They share a look. She knows that it isn't fair that she knows this of him and he doesn't know her thing. It might change things if he did know. There has to be something more fitting with her being what she is, she's not as fragile or weak as an average human. But it's not just about her. She has a family to think about. Charlie and Bella are very much human. And bringing that risk into their lives. She's not sure she can do it. "Now excuse me," She tells him. "I have to go be a cockblock" She turns and then walks away from Emmett, crossing the parking lot to where Edward and Bella are. She was fine with things between the two of them when Edward was keeping his distance. Bella is human. She is soft and clumsy and she needs protection from forces that could very well hurt her. And right now, vampires are at the top of that list. She weaves through the other students, ignoring them, her focus completely on removing Bella from that situation with Edward. If she doesn't and then something happened, she'd feel terrible, she would feel deep guilt and self-hatred at letting something bad happen.

"Honestly, Edward," Bella states, annoyed and angry. "I can't keep up with you. I thought you didn't want to be my friend"

"I said it would be better if we weren't friends, not that I didn't want to be" Edward counters just as Zenaida reaches them.

"Hey" Bella greets Zenaida who smiles softly at her before she turns a glare on Edward.

"Goodbye," Zenaida tells Edward who lets out a breath. She can see him thinking about arguing with her here, but she's not budging on her stance. She raises an eyebrow at him, daring him to do it.

"I'll talk to you later" Edward offers Bella before he walks away, heading back towards his family.

"Rude, Zen" Bella scolds her a little, Zenaida scoffs and turns to Bella.

"I don't like him" Zenaida admits. "Not with the way he flip flops with you...it's manipulative and misogynistic"

"Okay, I can accept maybe the manipulative aspect, but...come on, how is it misogynistic?"

"Because he does it so he has all the power over your relationship" Zenaida offers. "Because he's the male"

"That's not what it is" Bella argues.

"Look at how flustered you are, how angry and annoyed and yet, I bet you still can't stop thinking about him...." Bella lets out a breath and shrugs. "Yeah, see, misogynistic and manipulative" Zenaida points out and turns to glare across at Edward who is glaring right back at her now. She knows he can hear her. That he heard all of that.

"So what do I do?" Bella asks, Zenaida turns to her and smirks.

"Take back your power" She offers. "Don't let him treat you like a doormat, Bella, you deserve better than that" Bella looks at Zenaida softly. Glad she's here to look out for her. Zenaida will protect her, from anything that may threaten her.
