《Alpha Caine》Chapter XXIV

Amira
"Ooo, I hear nasty thoughts," Brayden's voice echoes through the library as he enters. "Ew, gross, they're yours. What are you reading?" I roll my eyes.
"I thought we made a deal about that," I glare at him.
"Sometimes I don't know who's thoughts I'm reading until I see them," he shrugs and sits in the chair across the table from me.
"Why are even reading thoughts right now?" he just shrugs.
"I'm bored."
"Well who else would be in the library?"
"Logan. That guy strangely likes this place," he says unimpressed.
"He must be shrewd," I keep my eyes fixed on the book I am reading as I try to tune out Brayden's voice.
"I don't know what that means," he just shrugs and pulls his phone out.
"Crack a book, Brayden," I flip the page.
"He is rude, though," he ignores my comment.
"My kind of guy," I mumble, still not paying much attention to the conversation.
"Speaking of, how's Caine?" I look up at him with questioning in my eyes.
"Why don't you ask him yourself?"
"I haven't had much time to just hang out with him lately."
"Now seems like a perfectly good time to me," I go back to reading.
"He's not here," I look up at Brayden and furrow my brows.
"Where is he?"
"He took Tyson on border control, showing him the ropes of being an Alpha, I guess. When is that kid's changing anyways?"
"A week and a half," I say as I flip another page. Suddenly Brayden stands up.
"Alright let's go, duty calls," he winks and turns towards the door.
"What?"
"Caine just mind linked me. They need your help."
"What for?" I ask in confusion. Brayden just shrugs in response.
"Don't know, he just said you're needed at the hospital?" My heart drops.
Why would they need me at the hospital? Was it my dad? My mom? Jade? I quickly shut the book and followed Brayden out the door. He walks us to the driveway and I raise my eyebrows in shock when he hands me a helmet.
"What?"
"I'm not getting on that," I eye the large black motorcycle suspiciously.

"Then run," he straps his helmet on and straddles the bike. I roll my eyes before hesitantly throwing my leg over the hunk of metal and pulling the other helmet securely on my head. I wrap my arms tightly around Brayden's waist and he quickly speeds off towards the hospital.
A few short minutes later he pulls into the emergency lane and parks his bike. He jumps off and them helps me to climb off.
Brayden makes his way towards the automatic doors of the hospital before turning to me.
"Are you coming?" I nod and take a few staggering steps. Brayden chuckles and I shoot him a glare.
When I finally regain my footing, Brayden leads us into the main doors and across the lobby to the elevator.
Soon we're at the fifth floor and my brows scrunch in confusion.
"The NICU?" He nods.
"Caine told me to bring you here."
He leads us down a few halls and soon we enter a room. Tyson is in there with a nurse.
Tyson's face looks worried and pale.
"What's up? Where's Caine?" Brayden asks Tyson, and he gestures behind the curtain that is pulled across the room.
Brayden reaches for the curtains and pulls it back for me. I duck under it and he follows.
I first see a doctor working a machine and hear a steady sound of beats. My eyes follow the many cords connected to it. They meet somewhere behind a flanneled back, the shirt stretching across the muscular back.
Brayden whistles and Caine turns around. His shirt is unbuttoned and hanging open in the front, revealing his tanned torso. All the cords from the machine gather behind his hands and I finally see what they're connected to.
A small, pale baby, no bigger than a football, is engulfed in Caine's hands and pressed up against his chest. It has a blanket barely wrapped around it and all the probes and other things from the machine are stuck to its body with an air tube wrapped around its face. I can see the small blue veins spiderwebbed across its head.
"What-"
"An omega went into labor near the border. We rushed her here, but the baby came before we made it. Something happened and now she's still waking up from surgery and this little guy is fighting death. I've been giving him energy, but I can't give him too much or he won't be able to handle it and his heart isn't strong enough. The doctor said it's failing and I don't-" Caine rambles frantically and I can easily spot the fatigue on him. He couldn't have given the baby too much energy, but he looks drained. I place a light hand on his arm.

"Calm down, it's going to be okay. What do you need me to do?"
"I need you to heal him," he looks at me with high faith.
"Caine I- I don't know if I can control it that well yet. We're talking about saving someone from death here."
"You need to try, please. I know you can do it, please," he begs and I stare into his pleading eyes. I huff in defeat.
"I can try, let me see him." Caine angles his body towards me and gently pulls the baby slightly away from his warm, bare chest. I place a hand on my heart and my other hand as lightly as I can on the baby's head.
I focus hard, but nothing happens. I look to Caine in defeat.
"You can do it," he leans in and whispers to me, encouraging me to try again. "Move closer to me, I'll give you some energy. It might help." I move even closer to him, and my arm grazes his chest when I raise it to touch the baby again. Taking a deep breath, I focus, and I instantly feel Caine sending energy through my arm.
I focus on that energy and send it to the baby. My eyes clench shut in concentration.
"Amira, look," I open my eyes to Caine's soft voice only because I can hear pride coating it.
The baby is no longer pale, but a soft pink. The veins that were so prudent on his head are now subtle.
"He's warmer," Caine looks at me, his eyes full of something I can't read.
"His heart is stronger, too," the doctor turns to me wide eyed, "How did you do that?"
"She's gifted," Caine still gazes at me in admiration until the doctor breaks his focus.
"I can take him now. We'll keep an eye on him." Caine reluctantly gives the baby to the doctor. When he exits behind the curtain Caine turns to me, grasping both of my arms with his hands.
"That was amazing," he ducks to rest his forehead on mine and then, before I can react, he's kissing me, the passion more than evident with the movement of his lips.
"Oh, nope, turn around," I hear Brayden's voice and glance towards the curtain after Caine pulls away to see our Beta attempting to push Tyson back behind the barrier.
"Are you sure your talent isn't ruining the moment?" Caine grumbles but motions for them to pull the curtain open.
"That was awesome!" Tyson, too, has had color return to his face and pulls me in for a brotherly hug.
"Caine helped me," I groaned in his tight embrace. He takes that as a sign to loosen his grip on me.
"Do you know what this means?" he asks excitedly and I look at him, expectantly waiting for an answer. "If I almost die trying to kill my brother, you can just save me!"
I roll my eyes as I try to hide the panic that overcomes me. I had almost forgotten of the task to come.
In a week and a half, Tyson is going to change.
In a week and a half, we are going to start a war.

Hey everyone!
Sorry this update is a little late. I didn't want to rush it to finish it. I mainly used this chapter to show you another side of Caine, but also to give you a glance at the strength of Amira's talents. It may have seemed a little random to you, so I hope that helps clear things up! Thank you so much for reading! I hope you like the book so far. Stay tuned, things are about to get serious.
Just a reminder that I'm always accepting covers to fill the headers of my chapters! Also, let me know what you think of the story! Comment, vote, DM me, I love hearing from all of you.
Happy reading!

Edge Cases (Book 1 Complete!)
Rare classes and powerful skills are helpful. Too bad the system doesn't seem built to handle them. What even are all these errors? Our team of outcasts and adventurers will have to rely on their trust - and the bane of all stories, healthy communication - just to survive, let alone understand what the system is doing. Because they're quickly realizing that it's doing something; to people, to monsters, and maybe even to the gods themselves. And their goal isn't just to survive; it's to make things better. It's a good thing they're not doing it alone. --- Edge Cases is an attempt to take the LitRPG genre and the overpowered MCs trope and write a story where numbers aren't everything. Sometimes it takes trust, support, and just a touch of being very, very clever. Expect a mix of action, slice-of-life, friendship, and ominous worldbuilding. Updates M-W-F at 6pm EST. Cover art by Alovck of Artstation, and typesetting by jessessey right here on RoyalRoad.

Dungeon Core Chat Room.
This is a slower-paced "experiment and dungeon building" web novel that tries to use the idea of peer-to-peer communication with Dungeon Cores instead of Dungeon to slave monster communication to break up the detailed dungeon building. Rank 1 description: (minimum met for system initialization...detailed description as follows) Each race was given a system by the gods to make up for their shortcomings and balance their place in this world. Humans: Abysmally bad at understanding and using magic unable to use more than the lowest of magic were given the "Skill System" magic in the form of premade skills with use, study, and mastery tied to experience. Elves: Intuitively understand magic and have long lives leading to vast knowledge and skill in their chosen fields. However, as a species, they have nearly zero sex drive and less than low fertility, so they were gifted the "World Tree System" with experience gained through the care of natural areas – gifting the chance of children to increase their numbers without dirty copulation. All “natural” or “wild” monsters are given an "Evolution system" designed around killing and consuming as many creatures as possible, slowly increasing strength and, at thresholds, allowing mutations to alter them multiple times. Dungeon cores are different. Unlike humans, they can see, manipulate and live off mana. Unlike Elves, they naturally crystallize after extended periods of time in high mana level areas. However, they cannot easily move or communicate and typically go insane without companionship. As a species other than the odd eccentric they are unimaginative. Brute forcing solutions without the drive to truly innovate. Thus they have been gifted with the "Dungeon Connection System" a magical version of the internet accessible by their peers that allows them to barter and sell: bait, traps, monsters, and knowledge, as well as entertain each other with “adventure streams” using exciting recorded battles and humorous reels of arrogant chumps biting off more than they can chew to often fatal effects. This is the casual story of a dungeon unluckily spawned far from potential adventurers forced to innovate beyond its peers to find its place in this world. Rank 2 Description: Justification. I've been on a dungeon core kick for months and while I love the genre – it's sparse with entries. Often the forced conflict gets repetitive and frantic solving of threats "power levels" the protagonist to god levels to progress the plot – taking away the nice steady progression fantasy I'm looking for. (Progression in this story is linked to how strong of monsters/traps/whatever he can create not his "level"...this is demonstrated by some of his newer monsters beating his older monsters not with discrete "this monster has 10 attack this one has 40") Additionally, the focus on 3rd parties with their drama takes away from the reason I’m reading dungeon core novels in the first place – I'm looking for magical crafting, experimentation and kingdom building – not defence from higher and higher levelled enemies looking to steal/destroy/control the MC. This novel is kind of just me writing the story I wish I could read. I like thinking about the experimentation that can be done in fantasy settings using 'mana' as an excuse to make up rules and try to keep them internally consistent. IE once I define how a rule works, I'm going to commit to keeping it – no breaking hard truths I've given when it's convenient, even if it backs me into a corner. Hopefully, that should make the story interesting to read even if it's SOL and less action-oriented. There will be problems to solve and a clear progression in strength (of created monsters and knowledge) however due to not wanting to force conflict for the sake of conflict the general theme will be closer to slice of life with few action sequences and no overarching goal so please keep that in mind when picking this up as the genre is not for everyone. Finally, I have a clear goal of what I want from this story (not an endless romp but a series of arcs and then a conclusion that's a couple of dozen medium-sized chapters long) I want to commit to finishing it or at least bringing it to a point of rest. I hate all the engaging stories that stop with a “hiatus” indefinitely so in the event I lose motivation I'll work to end this even if the ending becomes rushed/unsatisfying just to give a sense of closure. I’m planning on including several polls in terms of direction and taking feedback heavily into account if I get enough readers (but may choose to ignore it if it deviates too far from the direction I want to take this as in feedback like: “The MC needs a cartoonishly evil arch-enemy that wants to enslave him and force the mc to pump out magic items” or “the MC needs to make a body and learn teleportation then live with humans” will get shot down without consideration.)

Exitium (dropped)
Year 2232 World destruction is imminent. All nation leaders and renowned scientists gather at the UN for a secret meeting, called by a doctor, declaring to have a way to perpetuate humanity... but on another planet, a very hostile one. Planet Exitium, the closest habitable planet, filled with deadly fauna and flora. This is the story about the people sent there- children, to be honest. Children with no idea where they are, what had happened to them, and what would be of their life. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is my first story ever, and I hope you all like it, I'm sorry for the horrible piece of art that is the cover, I did it myself, and have absolutely no skills in photoshop, and I'll change it later. And yes, the MC's get some pretty OP skills and weapons.... At least until they find the enemy...
