"if he's the reason that you're leaving me tonight,

spare me what you think and

tell me a lie"

Anne and Ruby had made some biscuits for the boys while they worked. Ruby had agreed on the intent of seeing Gilbert, who she was a big fan of. Anne, however, was not.

Not that it mattered. Amelia was more preoccupied with Ruby. Amelia wanted to speak to Gilbert, to thank him for saving her life. Not wanting to hurt Ruby, she told her about it before hand. "I can't wait to see Gilbert." added Ruby strongly, walking down the path, accompanied by Anne, and Diana and Amelia who had decided to tag along. "I hope he likes them."

"I'm sure he will." answered Diana, looking at Amelia for any reaction. All she saw was the girl nervously biting her lip.

"By the way, Ruby, I hope you don't mind, but I was hoping to speak to Gilbert." said Amelia weakly, expecting an outburst from the short blonde. "Whatever for?"

"I, uhm, just wanted to thank him for saving my life." Amelia answered truthfully. "Oh, he was such a handsome hero, wasn't he? I suppose its okay. I know you don't like him that way."

"No, of course I don't." and all three girls, minus Ruby, could tell Amelia was lying.

Shortly afterwards, they arrived at the two burnt houses. The minister was there, supervising the job, as the men worked to build the buildings. A indistinct chatter filled the silence, as Amelia spotted Gilbert straight away. He was on the roof with Billy, hammering away the planks of wood onto the platform. All four girls greeted the minister with an afternoon, minister.

"I'm learning to bake. Would you care for a scone?" said Anne, while both blondes looked at a certain boy with curly hair on the roof. "Oh, I don't mind if I do." chuckled the minister, and picked one up. "This is some heavy work." he wiped his forehead with a handkerchief as the girls walked away, leaving the basket on the table. Billy, being the way he is, commented as he saw the girls arrive. "Hey look, it's the freak and her sisters."

"As long as they bring food, I don't care if it's Quasimodo." defended Gilbert, before turning around. His eyes directly landed on Amelia, and they just stared at each other. But Amelia eventually looked away, when Ruby fell to the ground, and Billy laughed. "Ruby, are you alright?" asked Anne. Ruby sits down and starts crying softly.

"Girls are so useless. Guess you should have stayed home in the kitchen, eh?" mocked Billy, chuckling. "Guess you should shut your mouth and actually start working, eh?" Amelia shouted at him, while Anne and Diana consoled Ruby. Gilbert grinned, just staring at her. "Go home and bake cookies!" shouted Billy offended. "Headline: they already did." answered Gilbert.

"This is mine and Ruby's property, or did you forget?" Amelia scoffed. "Why don't you shove off and leave the men to their work?" replied Billy, and Gilbert started to climb down the ladder. "Seeing as your too busy being a bully to get it down, hand me the hammer and I'll finish the job myself." shouted Amelia, finally loosing her cool. The men working at the background laughed, and Amelia smirked.

But her smile disappeared when she saw Gilbert helping Ruby to stand up. He picked up her hat and handed it to her. "There you are." he said softly, and looked at Amelia who was avoiding his look. Jealousy churned inside Amelia, who couldn't help being selfish for once, and hated herself for it. "Thank you Gilbert." answered Ruby in awe, ignoring the fact that the couple wanted to be left alone.

"Yeah, of course. Thanks for, um, coming by to help feed the Beasts." he joked, still looking at Amelia. Diana, who felt the tension, offered the girls to leave. "Hey, Ruby, Anne, let's give the rest of the men some biscuits." and with that they left. Amelia coughed, and smiled softly at Gilbert, who was already staring at her.

"I wanted to speak to you, actually." Gilbert frowned. "Yeah?"

"Yeah. I just wanted to, um, you know, thank you. For saving my life last night." Amelia admitted shyly and blushed softly under Gilbert's intense stare. "It's no problem"

"It was. I could be dead right now." Amelia softly put her hand on top of hers, and missed how Gilbert blushed. "I also wanted to say sorry." Gilbert frowned again. "Sorry?"

"For ignoring you and not giving you an explanation. But it's kind of a secret, so you'll have to trust me on this." Gilbert laughed. "Of course I trust you. Will I regret this?"

"Probably." said Amelia truthfully, and both teenagers laughed. Some men who were looking though that they were dating, seeing the chemistry and the looks they spared each other. "But I do want to be friends." they said both at the same time. They chuckled again. "Of course." said Gilbert answering first. "So this secret won't be affected by this?"

"I don't think so, not anymore." said Amelia. "Anyway..."

"Anyway..." repeated Gilbert, and they both just stared at each other. Amelia coughed, and looked away. "I should go. The girls will be wondering where I am." Gilbert nodded. "Of course. See you later?" he asked shyly and Amelia nodded. "Without a shadow of a doubt." and with that, she headed away.

Little did they both know, that this would only end in hurt and pain or cheerful and perfect.

It depended on which path they both decided to go to.

Anne then showed the other three girls to a little house made out of sticks in the middle of the woods. It was beautifully decorated with flowers and wild weeds. All four of them loved it straight away. "Oh, Anne, this is so... So..." said Diana speechless, all of them already inside. "Deliciously secret and scrumptiously exciting?" added Anne for her, and she chuckled. "You have such a way with words."

"I hardly know what you're saying." admitted Ruby, and they all laughed. "Now before we begin cultivating our imaginations, each of us should choose our nom de plume." added Anne in French. "See? it happened again." Ruby exclaimed and they laughed again.

"A nom de plume is a pen name for purposes of anonymity. I shall be writing under the name of Rosamond Montmorency." Diana smiled. "Oh, that gives me such a thrill!"

"Once a week, we'll read our completed storied aloud to each other and talk them over thoughtfully." Diana and Anne and Amelia opened their books, but Ruby looked thoughtfully. "I can't think of anything!" blurted out Ruby, ashamed of herself. "I've got heaps of ideas if you need a little prompting. How about a tale of romance most divine and tragical?"

All three of them dipped their quills in the ink pot and started to write.

But Amelia, without realising is what she told herself, started to draw someone, starting by the eyes.

And that someone ended up being Gilbert Blythe.
