《Little Thief (Black Butler G/T)》Chapter Sixteen

Kadence could only stare with wide emerald eyes at the butler in front of her. She should be dead right now. That bullet in his fingers should have blown her to pieces. But it didn't. It was humanly impossible to catch a bullet like that and not get injured.
So what is he?
Sebastian, still gripping the bullet in a closed fist looked at the frightened male with a wide smirk. "Now, I believe this belongs to you." His voice was accompanied by a soft grunt as he swung his arm, the bullet leaving his hand as fast as it would a gun.
A startled gasp emitted from Kadence, her hands clamping over her mouth. The bullet was only thrown but pierced that man's forehead. It was like a hot knife slicing through butter. Her bottom lip quivered. Should she run from the butler? Now that she's seen that, would he have to kill her?
Her legs moved on their own, leading her to the edge of the bed. She could now see that man's lifeless corpse lying face first on the hardwood flooring. Blood was already pooling.
Sebastian's ruby eyes watched the Borrower. It was obvious she was in shock. Watching her small form move toward the edge of the bed, he prepared himself to intervene her escape. But she only stared at the body.
She stared longer than he'd expected. Five seconds. Ten seconds. Twenty. When it neared a minute, Sebastian finally was about to break the silence but the Borrower's soft, wavering voice beat him to it.
"Wh-What are you?"
Kadence didn't turn to face him, her gaze never leaving the limp man. Her eyes darted over him and the rusted pistol that was laid in his now slightly open palm.
Sebastian was now silent. He wondered if there would be a way to get out of this. With the Borrower's growing trust a lie wouldn't be acceptable in the current moment. And surprisingly, a part of him didn't want to lose her trust just yet.
"I am a demon, contracted with the Earl Ciel Phantomhive. That mark you saw on my hand not even a day ago is my contract seal." Speaking calmly, the butler was hesitant as his fingers reached for the small, shaking female.
The shadow of his hand fell over her, and Kadence darted across the bed to a spot further from him. Her emerald colored eyes stared at him, fear evident in them. "D-Don't touch me! A-A demon? I-I don't understand, wh-why? H-How?"

"No living human besides the Young Master knows what I truly am. Tanaka, I am sure suspects. The other three are simply imbeciles. So," his lips twitched into a small smile, "I do not recommend telling anyone. Though, who would you tell? You're terrified of everyone."
Kadence kept her eyes locked on him, not caring how terrified, how weak, she must look. He was a demon. That explained how easily he was able to threaten her life. How unfazed he was by the bullet. But it didn't explain something else.
"S-So if y-you're a demon...why have you saved me? Twice now. Maybe more. You were kind, offered to help me with the dishes, let me sleep when I needed to. I-I just don't understand." The redhead's voice continued to waver, her eyes lowering to her feet where the maid shoes the tall man made her fit perfectly.
"Ah. See, I have been on this Earth for many, many years. Since King Tut ruled Egypt and even before that." Sebastian spoke calmly, ignoring the confused look he received when he mentioned the deceased king. "I have seen many things. But never in my life have I seen a creature like yourself. You've peaked my interest. I'm fascinated by you, intrigued. Watching you work despite your size is both amusing and bewildering. Also, the Young Master told me your well being is in my hands. And I am a very capable man."
When her head slowly turned back in his direction, Sebastian offered a gentle smile, even if it was forced. Her eyes were observing his face, watching him, his hands closely. To the demon, she looked hesitant to speak.
"Wh-What can and can't you do? A-Abilities I mean. Y-You said you're very c-capable."
Sebastian's lips remained in a smile, more genuine than before. Instead of running away, she was curious. Asking questions to understand her fear. He found it a little admirable. "I can do quite a lot, there are limits to even my power though. I can control fire, run at inhuman speeds, and complete basic tasks perfectly. There is much more, but if I were to tell you them all we'd be sitting here for hours, and I still have work to do."
"C-Can you control the weather?" Kadence piped up timidly, her tiny head cocking to the side.
"Goodness, no. That's a higher powers job." A deep chuckle rumbled in his throat, and he momentarily shut his eyes. That was a test though. When he opened them, he half-expected to see her running for her life. She was still standing in the same spot though, watching him like a hawk. No. More like a frightened fawn when it spies a hunter with its gun.

Kadence twirled red strands of hair around her fingers. The more she felt she understood, the less scared she believed she be. "A-And what you can't do?"
"Feel specific human emotions. Sadness, fear, love. Well, I've never felt them before. That doesn't mean I can't at all, I've just never had a reason to. Love though is one I am certain of. It's a thing all demons bear. Whether it is a curse or a blessing I will never know." The demon butler explained calmly.
Kadence nodded her head silently in understanding, letting him continue.
"I can also not put anyone's life ahead of my Master's. So if there were ever a situation where you were in danger, but so was he, I would be forced to save him even if it would mean your untimely demise." His voice lowered, becoming slightly darker in tone while his ruby eyes drifted off to the side to avoid looking at the small woman.
"W-Well, I guess we just have to hope that moment never comes." Kadence slowly began to approach one of the gloved hands that rested on the bed a few feet from where she had been standing the entire time. "M-May I see it? Th-The mark."
Above her, Sebastian looked shocked. That only lasted momentarily as he lifted his left hand to his face, gripping the fabric of his glove at his finger between his teeth. He slowly pulled his hand away, sliding the velvet material from his hand. It exposed the dark purple colored pentagram on the back of his hand, and the pitch black nails he always kept hidden.
His now bare hand lowered near her, palm down so the Borrower could see the contract seal. "The Master has one too. On his eye. That is why he wear's the eyepatch." Sebastian explained, his eyes widening significantly when her tiny fingers began to trace the lines of the mark. He couldn't hide his unmistakable surprise.
The touch was so light if he wasn't watching he wouldn't even know she was doing anything. But he held still. Perfectly still until she backed away from the hand more than twice her size with a new sense of understanding. Her aura had become lighter, her fear still there but lowered an obvious amount.
Sebastian was silent as he retracted his hand and slipped the white glove back on. He was silent in case she decided to speak.
"S-Sebastian. I-If that's alright, can I go back to sleep? O-Or is there anything you'd like help with?" Kadence asked in a quiet voice, lifting her head to meet those crimson orbs that constantly watched her. Almost as much as her own emerald ones watched him.
"I have to go and prepare the Young Master for bed. He will be wondering why I am taking so long. Go ahead and go back to sleep, I will wake you if I feel there is a task you are capable of handling."
Kadence began to walk to the pillow, listening to Sebastian footsteps grow closer to the door. Her eyes widened and she wheeled around. "S-Sebastian?!"
Sebastian stopped with his back to her but turned fully to face her with his typical smile. "Yes?"
"Thank you again. For saving me. I-I never said it before."
She seemed to be the only one that thanked him for that kind of thing. Praise was wonderful to receive. "You're very welcome. I'm just simply one hell of a butler."
Kadence paused briefly before breaking into a wide smile, giggling quietly. "Oh, I get it now." She whispered to no one as Sebastian turned then again turned to face her.
"Allow me to remove that from the room." He gestured toward the dead man that threatened her life.
Kadence hummed approvingly as she climbed up onto the soft surface of the pillow, nestling into the warmth. She kept her back toward Sebastian while he cleaned up the mess, trying to ignore the squelching noises she could hear better than any human would when the body was moved.
Squeezing her eyes shut tight, she still tried to process the information she just received. Everything that just happened. Just the other day she lived in the walls with no one in the mansion knowing of her existence. Now she was laying on a pillow in not a humans, but a demons bedroom.
God, what would other Borrowers say?
