《Little Thief (Black Butler G/T)》Chapter Seventeen

After Sebastian expertly disposed of the body, he ensured he didn't have a single speck of blood on his clothes. Once he was sure he looked presentable, he at least made his way to the Master bedroom where he would take care of Ciel for the night.
When he arrived at the large room, he couldn't say he wasn't at all surprised that the Young Master was still awake, sitting on the edge of the bed still fully dressed and looking rather irritated.
"You took your time getting here," Ciel spoke with a grumble, one of his eyebrows raised as he watched Sebastian close the door and gather his nightclothes from a dresser drawer.
"My apologies sir, there was an intruder that needed to be eradicated first. I do believe they were after Kadence." Sebastian spoke calmly, his eyes closed as he laid out the white nightshirt on the plush bed. He then knelt to the ground, beginning to untie Ciel's shoes.
"Again with that Borrower. I thought this would be amusing but the whole thing has really only burdened me, not you. What the hell is she even good for besides dropping sugar cubes into tea?" Ciel smirked, spotting how tense the butler's shoulders got.
Sebastian couldn't deny that a being that small was almost entirely useless when it came to housework. But he witnessed her determination when he assisted with the dishes, and her soul was pure. "Perhaps she could assist on cases."
Ciel snickered at this. "If we ever needed bait for some guard dog or birds, yes."
The butler pursed his lips and lifted his eyes to meet Ciel's single uncovered one. "No, I simply meant if we ever needed someone that could sneak into a room unnoticed. Someone that could gather information by only listening to a conversation. She may have more use than you want to believe, Young Lord."

The corner of the Earl's lips again twitched into a smirk. "Then we set a challenge. On my next case, we will send her in. If she fails or is caught, that's the end of this nonsense and we leave her to her fate. If she succeeds, then mayhaps I will change my opinion of her.
Sebastian took a moment to consider this. She would need time to be trained, taught what she should and shouldn't do. She was inexperienced after all. But something else crossed his mind. For a year or so she'd been living here without getting caught by even him. So that showed the Borrower definitely had some talent when it came to sneaking around. "Very well. That sounds reasonable enough."
A silence fell over the two while Sebastian quickly did as he normally would. Drese Ciel from his clothes into his nightshirt, rest the eyepatch and ring on the nightstand and remove the lit candelabra from the room.
Once finished with helping him retire for the night, Sebastian exited the master bedroom and began the walk back to the servants quarters where he could still sense the Borrower sleeping peacefully. He wanted to keep it that way until morning when he could wake her.
He's grown already quite fond of her. Let it be her determination or perhaps the fact she knows he is a demon and yet still seems to trust him. It could be the way her 'thank yous' are genuine. Or it could even be that despite his Master's dislike for her, she doesn't want to give up and continue her work. She was more honorable and admirable than most humans Sebastian has met in his long lifetime.
Sebastian took the remainder of the night to think of ways to teach the Borrower and ways he could help her not to get caught by any human that would prefer to just sell her off like the men who have been breaking in. He wouldn't feel right if he didn't teach her anything.

By morning when Sebastian arrived in his bedroom, he was shocked to find the redhead already up and ready for the day. Her maid uniform was crease free, her hair pulled into a bun, her shoes polished and spotless. The tiny being was even standing on his nightstand, struggling to see herself in the mirror.
"My, don't you look just how a Phantomhive servant should. Neat. Tidy, and ready for any job that gets thrown at you." The demon said with his usual closed eye smile. He strode across the room until he stood behind her, tilting the mirror so she could see herself.
Kadence had woken up early, so she wanted to get ready before anything this morning. She hoped it would impress the butler and heighten his opinion of her. The more she tried, the more she had a chance of having this place to stay. Good food, a nice, soft bed. And even though the day tired her out, she felt recharged for the following one.
Sebastian's deep voice made her jump, but she looked up at him with a bright smile. Her emerald eyes were sparkling, and when he tilted the mirror she offered him a quiet thanks and continued to adjust her hair. "What's on my list for today? I want to start as soon as possible."
A genuine smile crossed Sebastian's lips and he lowered his hand until it rested palm up beside her. "I believe today your only task will be meeting the other servants, for they are hard enough to handle for a single day let alone with your other tasks. I will introduce you to them one at a time, and after that, we will start your training."
The thought of meeting the other servants frightened Kadence, but she had a demon with her. One that already protected her a few times. The idea of meeting them one at a time eased her tensions though, and she gave a firm, confident nod. "Yes, sir. But, training for what?"
"I'll tell you after we talk to the servants. But, why don't we get you a warm breakfast first, hmm? It will be a while before the Master is set to awaken, You can have a tiny bit of his meal. It'll be our little secret." Sebastian gave the Borrower a sly wink, putting a single finger to his lips. How he loved finding ways to annoy Ciel if he ever found out.
He almost let a chuckle escape at how bright those tiny emerald eyes became at his words, her head nodding far more eagerly. She scrambled willingly into his hand, her own miniature ones gripping the fabric of his glove. "I'll take that as a yes." He said while turning to his bedroom door, ready to head to the kitchen and prepare breakfast for the Borrower and his Master.

Dungeon Core Chat Room.
This is a slower-paced "experiment and dungeon building" web novel that tries to use the idea of peer-to-peer communication with Dungeon Cores instead of Dungeon to slave monster communication to break up the detailed dungeon building. Rank 1 description: (minimum met for system initialization...detailed description as follows) Each race was given a system by the gods to make up for their shortcomings and balance their place in this world. Humans: Abysmally bad at understanding and using magic unable to use more than the lowest of magic were given the "Skill System" magic in the form of premade skills with use, study, and mastery tied to experience. Elves: Intuitively understand magic and have long lives leading to vast knowledge and skill in their chosen fields. However, as a species, they have nearly zero sex drive and less than low fertility, so they were gifted the "World Tree System" with experience gained through the care of natural areas – gifting the chance of children to increase their numbers without dirty copulation. All “natural” or “wild” monsters are given an "Evolution system" designed around killing and consuming as many creatures as possible, slowly increasing strength and, at thresholds, allowing mutations to alter them multiple times. Dungeon cores are different. Unlike humans, they can see, manipulate and live off mana. Unlike Elves, they naturally crystallize after extended periods of time in high mana level areas. However, they cannot easily move or communicate and typically go insane without companionship. As a species other than the odd eccentric they are unimaginative. Brute forcing solutions without the drive to truly innovate. Thus they have been gifted with the "Dungeon Connection System" a magical version of the internet accessible by their peers that allows them to barter and sell: bait, traps, monsters, and knowledge, as well as entertain each other with “adventure streams” using exciting recorded battles and humorous reels of arrogant chumps biting off more than they can chew to often fatal effects. This is the casual story of a dungeon unluckily spawned far from potential adventurers forced to innovate beyond its peers to find its place in this world. Rank 2 Description: Justification. I've been on a dungeon core kick for months and while I love the genre – it's sparse with entries. Often the forced conflict gets repetitive and frantic solving of threats "power levels" the protagonist to god levels to progress the plot – taking away the nice steady progression fantasy I'm looking for. (Progression in this story is linked to how strong of monsters/traps/whatever he can create not his "level"...this is demonstrated by some of his newer monsters beating his older monsters not with discrete "this monster has 10 attack this one has 40") Additionally, the focus on 3rd parties with their drama takes away from the reason I’m reading dungeon core novels in the first place – I'm looking for magical crafting, experimentation and kingdom building – not defence from higher and higher levelled enemies looking to steal/destroy/control the MC. This novel is kind of just me writing the story I wish I could read. I like thinking about the experimentation that can be done in fantasy settings using 'mana' as an excuse to make up rules and try to keep them internally consistent. IE once I define how a rule works, I'm going to commit to keeping it – no breaking hard truths I've given when it's convenient, even if it backs me into a corner. Hopefully, that should make the story interesting to read even if it's SOL and less action-oriented. There will be problems to solve and a clear progression in strength (of created monsters and knowledge) however due to not wanting to force conflict for the sake of conflict the general theme will be closer to slice of life with few action sequences and no overarching goal so please keep that in mind when picking this up as the genre is not for everyone. Finally, I have a clear goal of what I want from this story (not an endless romp but a series of arcs and then a conclusion that's a couple of dozen medium-sized chapters long) I want to commit to finishing it or at least bringing it to a point of rest. I hate all the engaging stories that stop with a “hiatus” indefinitely so in the event I lose motivation I'll work to end this even if the ending becomes rushed/unsatisfying just to give a sense of closure. I’m planning on including several polls in terms of direction and taking feedback heavily into account if I get enough readers (but may choose to ignore it if it deviates too far from the direction I want to take this as in feedback like: “The MC needs a cartoonishly evil arch-enemy that wants to enslave him and force the mc to pump out magic items” or “the MC needs to make a body and learn teleportation then live with humans” will get shot down without consideration.)
