《delivery girl》Ch.23

"Okay. This guy is the real deal."
"Although I'm still a guy, I still think he's super handsome!"
"The fashion department's Daniel Park!"
(Y/N) was watching from her spot, clapping for Daniel while Huo screamed along with the rabid girls.
"Wow, that's a lot of money..." she mumbled when Lala Kim bid $2,500.
"Holy shit!" Huo laughed. "You could pay rent for like, two months with that."
(Y/N) nodded, totally in shock while she listened to the bids become higher and higher.
"Maybe I should put myself up for auction..." Huo contemplated aloud.
"Nobody wants you." Was (Y/N)'s snarky reply, but she was proven wrong when a girl in front of them shouted
"Please do!"
Huo smirked down at (Y/N) and haughtily crossed his arms over his muscled chest. (Y/N) was going to hit him, but a frazzled looking Jay jogged up to them, distracting her.
He grabbed (Y/N) by the shoulders and gave her a little shake.
"Jay, What? $10,000?! I don't even think Daniel's worth that. He's a good kid and all but-"
Jay shook his head 'no' and rattled (Y/N) again.
"She's not a maraca!" Huo cried, but nobody paid him any mind.
"I'm not letting you waste that much money, especially if I can just set you guys up myself."
Huo stood to the side, totally confused. "How are you two even communicating?"
"Shut up, Huo."
Jay gave a frustrated sigh and was about to go and try to bargain with the two girls working the stand again, but Daniel had already been sold for $5,000. His shoulders slumped and (Y/N) patted his arm.
"I'll make sure you two hang out."
Jay nodded and awkwardly patted (Y/N)'s arm in return then walked away, getting lost in the crowd.
(Y/N) and Huo remained in their spot for a while, listening to everyone's shocked or anguished reactions to Daniel's price. When they saw Daniel's buyer and the guy she was with wade through the crowd they went to walk away, but before they could get very far...

"Miss (L/N), Mr. Choi, please come with us."
The two stopped in their tracks, as if them freezing up would make them invisible. The attractive girl crossed her arms and scoffed.
"When you two grow up, we'll be in the parking lot. We have important business to discuss and I don't have all day." With a final sneer and flip of her hair the girl walked off. The guy she was with sighed.
"She might be in a pissy mood, but we're discussing your payment, so don't be too long." He said with a fake smile, clapping Huo on the shoulder before following after the girl.
(Y/N) rolled her eyes and Huo stuck his tongue out at their backs.
"You know, this is probably why they think we're immature." (Y/N) said, putting her hands in the pockets of her uniform skirt.
"Or maybe it's those cute bandaids you always buy." Huo snickered.
(Y/N) narrowed her eyes at him, but didn't reply. "Let's just go."

Daniel ended up meeting his buyer and the guy she was with in the parking lot. (Y/N) and her friend were there as well, and they looked like they'd rather be anywhere else.
'Woah! Awkward...'
"Ah... um. Thank you." Daniel said shyly, scratching the back of his head. 'What am I thanking them for?'
He heard someone snort from behind them, following after came a thud and a quiet "Ow!"
'She's stunning... and now I'm supposed to d-date her?'
The guy that was standing next to her frowned, as if he was able to read his thoughts.
"The other girl almost won but..." Daniel laughed, trying to maintain the conversation.
"Hey, you. What's wrong with her? You think you're so hot? I think you're deluded. You think I bought you because I like you?! Why the hell does he want me to keep my eye on him?!"
'Huh? Why is she like this all of a sudden?'
"Do not look down on others because you're handsome."
Daniel froze, staring at her with wide eyes.

"Oh, get off your high horse, Crystal." A voice from behind him hissed. He turned to see (Y/N) glaring a the girl that had just chewed him out.
"Stop taking your awful mood out on others. He's not the one who pissed in your cheerios. He didn't ask you to watch him. You can't just get daddy funds for sitting there and looking pretty, you know."
'(Y/N)... thank you for standing up for me... but since when have I had these thoughts? What did I say?'
Before Daniel could even try to defend himself, the girl turned to open the car door.
"Let's go, you two. We're discussing finances at my father's office."
(Y/N) huffed and Huo groaned.
"The way you say it makes it sound so boooring." The green haired boy whined.
"Well, really only one of you has to come, since you two can split your pay by yourselves." The snobby girl's company said from the driver's seat.
(Y/N) immediately put the tip of her pointer finger to her nose. "Not it."
Huo gasped in betrayal. "How could you!? I went last time."
(Y/N) shrugged, "Not my fault you're too slow."
Huo pouted and made his way to the car.
The man sitting in the drivers seat chuckled. "(Y/N), your reluctance to come with us never fails to wound me."
"Oi!" Huo snapped from the back seat. (Y/N) shrugged again.
Meanwhile, Daniel was still having an inner battle. 'I have to clear this up.'
He went to grab the girl's wrist before she could climb into the car after Huo, but (Y/N)'s hand caught him before he could touch her.
'When did she...?!'
"Don't. It's not a good idea." (Y/N) said, watching as Crystal got into the car and they drove off.
She bit back a smile when she saw Huo pressing his face to the back seat's window, leaving marks on the glass.
She looked back to Daniel's saddened expression and softened a bit.
"Don't let her get to you. She's one to talk, she's the one who judged you based on your appearance without knowing you as a person. I know you didn't want Lala to buy you because of your looks." (Y/N) said, giving Daniel a look that was so intensely reassuring that he couldn't keep eye contact for more than a few seconds.
"(Y/N), I-, thank you, but-"
"You're better than that. I know for sure." She interrupts.
Daniel pressed his lips together and exhaled through his nose. 'There's no winning this.'
"Thanks, (Y/N), you're a good person." 'Even if she might be right...'
(Y/N)'s lip twitched into a soft smile, "You're a good person too, and my friend. So of course I'm gonna stand up for you." She reached up to ruffle Daniel's hair, ignoring the fact that she had to stand on her tippy toes to do so.
Daniel stiffened, his cheeks flushing a bright red at the unusual amount of affection that (Y/N) was doling out. After the initial shock, he relaxed a bit.
'This isn't so bad...' without even realizing it he began to lean into her hand.
He snapped back to reality when (Y/N) pulled away her hand like she had been burned. There was a barely noticeable blush dusted on her cheeks as well.
She patted the hand she was ruffling Daniel's hair with on her chest, coughing a bit in order to pretend she was clearing her throat. She refused to meet Daniel's eyes, that were looking down at her in confusion.
'Did I do something wrong...?'
After (Y/N)'s mini coughing fit, she gave him a tight lipped smile. "Sorry about that, I uh... swallowed a fly."
"Oh, it's okay." Daniel said with an understanding smile.
The two stood in an uncomfortable silence for a few seconds before (Y/N) spoke up again.
"We should get back to the festival, don't you have a performance to get ready for?"
...
"Shit! You're right!"
(Y/N) have a short, breathy laugh as she watched Daniel sprint through the parking lot, frantically apologizing when a car honked at him after he runs in front of it.

She found herself waiting for a delayed train on a deserted platform, in the freezing cold of the Dutch autumn. Just when the strangeness is making her consider turning around and going back home an empty train rolls into the station. For reasons unclear to this day she decides to get onboard. An unlikely, and quite impossible, train accident is about to hurtle her into a world she had always suspected existed. After a brief hospitalization she must choose between two continents and finds herself reluctantly boarding a plane to Oregon to be reunited with her shadows. She returns to the town she grew up in, which is where her father still lives and her childhood memories linger. By the end of the week the mysterious train accident turns out to be the least of her problems. Her life was never supposed to become this serious this fast. Through an improbable and unfortunate series of events she is soon introduced to a motley crew of characters that appear to be carrying the same struggles through life. They possess a familiar sense of inadequacy and insecurity. Marith realizes that for the first time in her life she has found herself a tribe, or, as they prefer to call it, a Chain. She is introduced to a world of Prophets, Runners and Mages led by an Oracle and a Watchmaker. Over the course of several weeks Marith learns that, together with her Chain, she is expected to save this fabric of reality, by fighting a mysterious and immortal creature and his aggressive pet. In order to have a chance at overcoming this force of nature she has to revisit the darkest and most desolate corners of her mind. ***** The total word count of the first 12 chapters amounts to about 85.000 words.
