《Burn Archer》Twenty Four- The Ripple Effect

Faces turned towards me as they awaited an explanation, which they weren't going to get.

"I know this sounds crazy, but you have to trust me on this. I'll explain once we live through it. You don't have to come if you don't want to."

I paused thinking about the lives that would get lost if I was wrong.

"We have to jump into that waterfall. It doesn't matter if you don't know how to swim, because you won't need to," I said my eyes flickering towards Ash.

I ran towards the edge of the waterfall and before I jumped I turned around and shouted, "You need to let yourself drown, just be calm and don't panic!"

I heard myself scream as my feet touched the water. My instant reaction was to fight the water and try swimming out but I reminded myself to stay calm.

I felt myself getting pulled into the bottom of the ocean bed. I peeked up and saw large figures splashing into the water.

My friends had trusted me with their lives and jumped in. It was a matter of a lot of lives and deaths that my theory was correct.

I glared down at both my hands that glowed in the dark water. Suddenly I felt as if the life in me was being sucked out by a vacuum, so I screamed.

Bubbles burst out of my mouth and my eyes felt as if they were red. It seemed as if someone had snatched my heart out of my rib cage and was kicking it around on concrete.

I gasped for breath as I was tossed onto hard ground. I glanced down at my body. It was dry. I gently touched my knee which was bleeding and scraped by the ground.

"Sebash- Ash! Eleanor-" I screamed as I saw their bodies being thrown out followed by Tyson and Ivory.

I had to keep in mind to not say Sebastian's name out loud in front of the others.

They sat there coughing the water out. I knelt down next to Ivory who lay on the ground with her eyes wide open. "You were right, Burn."

"Where's James?"

"He didn't know why he followed us in the first place so he's on his way back home, I think," Eleanor said as she spat out more water.

They dusted their bottoms and got on their feet looking at me with expressions filled with questions.

Tyson smiled crossing his arms, "You gonna give us an explanation now?"

"It's called the Ripple Effect. Anyone heard of it?" I asked with a hint of accomplishment in my tone.

Sebastian stroked his dark blonde hair and stared at me. "Ripple effect is, obviously, like ripples expanding in the water when an object is dropped in it-"

"Theoretically we create an effect- often without our conscious intent or knowledge- which influences a lot of other things and has a bigger impact than we know off," Eleanor finished off.

I realised that Eleanor and Ash were completely in sync, that they finished each other's sentences off quite often. Suddenly I had a gut feeling that they really loved each other, in a friend way or maybe more.

My mother had always said 'Stealing someone's right away from anything or anyone is the worst crime you could commit'.

"Exactly," I whispered.

As I tied my hair in a ponytail, I explained further, "In our case, we were the objects being dropped in the water and the bigger impact in our scenario was the strong current pulling us downwards taking us into this secret cave. If any of us had tried going against the current, then they would have ran out of breath sooner or later."

"Are you some secret scientist or something? How did you know?" Tyson mockingly asked raising his eyebrows.

I thought back to the times when my family used to have a movie marathon and all of us huddled around a computer screen sharing extra butter popcorn.

The one night we watched a movie in which they showed a similar scene to what we had done. The man had used the same theory and made his friends jump into sea from a tall cliff.

The entire time, Atlantis and I were screaming and covering our eyes.

"No! Don't do it! It's such a stupid move!" we shouted together laughing as each one of his had friends jumped.

I glanced at the ground. "It was a movie I once watched."

Ivory ran up to me and jumped on me. "I never doubted you for a second, Burn."

From the corner of my eye I saw Eleanor cross her hands over her chest in irritation.

"Oh really? Burn was crazy when I first met her but now she's actually mental?" she said, imitating Ivory.

I rolled my eyes and glanced around in the cave. It was hollow and deep. There was a turn towards the end of the cave where a bright light was coming from which lit the entire cave up.

I began walking towards it with my feet trembling as I took each step. I heard the others following right behind me.

Our footsteps echoed, and our breathing was loud and muffled.

We followed the light and it led us to a mind-blowing sight.

The spaceship was huge. There were hundreds of windows glowing and the metal, which it was made off, held a reflection of all of us.

I glanced over our faces and stopped at mine. I looked like a mess; there was dirt all over my face, my hair in ugly knots and my clothes ripped and smudged with blood.

Suddenly I spotted something stroll out from behind the spaceship. We all gasped at the same time. And then there was heavy breathing.

I didn't expect it. I didn't expect her. Not at all.
