《Burn Archer》Twenty Three- Astatine

I twisted my head around to see who spoke and saw a tall figure with fiery ginger hair approaching us.
I squinted my eyes and realised that she was accompanied by other creatures behind her.
"Wh-who are yo-you," I asked as a demand more than a question. My mouth quivered as she came closer.
"It's Eleanor, and the others."
I glanced over at Sebastian before I rubbed my eyes and saw their blurry faces transform into clear images of my friends.
"You reached us!" I felt a hint of guilt in my tone, so I ran my fingers through my hair and hid it behind me.
"What have you done to yourself?" Tyson asked, his eyes sparkling with tears, as he slowly knelt down next to me and held my hand close to his face.
I jerked my hand back as it glowed in the silence.
"Please don't touch me, I might hurt you."
I held it close to my chest and backed away from the group.
"It doesn't work that way, it's not like your contagious."
I stared at Eleanor in happiness and looked down at my hand. "Well, this just means that I need to do everything I can to save my planet in 36 hours." I paused. "And make the best out of it."
I started walking towards the waterfall without turning around to see if the others were coming.
"You're dying, okay?" Sebastian's voice shook as he spoke.
I still didn't turn around, I replied, "We can't really do anything about that, now can we?"
I felt someone grab my wrist and jerk me around. "Hey what are you doing-"
"I'm not gonna let you die okay?"
I stared deep into his gold eyes and felt warmth all over my face as he left my wrist.

"You're like this because of me," he spoke without breaking eye contact, "Eleanor, is there a way?"
"For what?" Her quick response seemed fit with her tone which was stern.
"To save her, for god's sake!" His voice was raised in exasperation, but he was frightened.
She glanced around and walked over to Ivory and pulled her bow off. Then she strolled over to James and asked for a lighter.
He searched his pockets and handed her a small object. I felt my heart pounding in my rib cage as the silence went on.
She stood in the middle of the group and said one word, "Astatine."
We stood there, as confusion rose in the air, until James spoke. "I've heard of that. Astatine is the rarest natural element on earth."
"Elaborate a bit more, please," Eleanor whispered, causing me to almost not hear her.
"Well, I know that it's like dust, you can barely see it. It also has a life time of 8.1 hours and after it dies, it's reproduced as a new particle."
Tyson rose from his feet and threw his arms in the air in irritation. "How is that going to help?! She's going to be dead by the time we come anywhere close to it!"
"That is correct, Mr. Kang, Astatine is an element. But it's also a physical process."
I cursed in my head, as the thought of everyone scattered over the globe searching for a cure for me, occurred.
I pushed the thought aside and continued listening to Eleanor speaking just like the others.
"The Astatine Process is basically like the circle of life, except it's not. It's similar to the life of a phoenix. After a phoenix 'dies', it regenerates on the spot into itself again except it's like its taking birth again."

She sounded as we were forcing the information out of her. "The same thing happens in the process-"
"So we're going to have a little baby Burn or something?" Tyson asked.
Eleanor scrunched her thin nose. "No of course not, the process has different side effects though."
We waited for an explanation in silence. The idea of being reborn made me sick in the stomach. I couldn't imagine living without knowing my sister as I grew up.
"She's going to be different. Things are going to change of her physically and mentally. People barely know about it so I'm pretty sure it's never been used before, so the effects are unknown. It's dangerous and unexpected." Ella continued.
"I think she can manage that," James said quietly.
Eleanor glanced at the ground. "That's the problem; I don't know what she has to manage. It could be really bad."
"Well how does it work anyway?" I spat out, a little too quickly.
"It's called Preserving. After you die, we preserve your body in a freezing room and wait for exactly 8.1 hours. The coldness is going to mix with the glowing substance in your blood and have a chemical reaction-"
"Which will result in you changing and waking up because of the shock but anything could happen to you," Sebastian finished off quietly.
I felt blood rushing into my cheeks and I clenched my fists. "So I could turn into a pig or something?"
"We don't know, sorry Burn." I thought I heard a chuckle in her response.
I looked down at my glowing hand when I felt stinging inside. The pain felt sharp and sudden. "Okay, do what you have to do when it's time. But for now, we have to focus on getting to that ship."
Everyone must have realised my eagerness to avoid the topic of becoming a zombie, so they started asking me questions.
"What else did that old lady tell you?" Ivory asked quickly.
"She said that we should be facing the east of Strawberry River from the a very big palm tree or something."
Tyson was glancing upwards in fright. "I think I found that palm tree."
We all slowly looked up and a bunch of blue spiders seemed to be resting in peace.
"We need to get away from this place, fast," I said, my breathing uneven.
I looked ahead of us into the waterfall and I felt a spark inside me. Tyson followed my gaze and stopped when he saw it.
"It looks really unwelcoming, doesn't it?" he asked without looking away from it.
I raised an eyebrow. "Maybe that's what they want us to think."
"What do you mean?" Some of the others asked in unison.
"Ivory, try navigating where the spaceship is."
Ivory made a confused face but closed her eyes. We waited for a few minutes in silence as we tried interpreting her unusual expressions.
She finally opened her eyes. "That's weird. It's apparently right here. Where we stand this very moment. Except it's almost like it's under us. I couldn't find it completely because my senses triggered and got confused."
My heart skipped a few beats and my voice trembled in uncertainty. "I knew it."
