《A Glitch In The Matrix》5: Best Friends

Evie sat in the corner of the cantina that had been effectively dubbed as the clone bar. It made sense, since most of the people here were clones.
"Enjoying your down time?" a familiar voice spoke. She looked up to see Rex standing next to her seat. She shrugged.
"Down time isn't fun if you don't have anyone to spend it with", she said. Rex chuckled.
"Good thing I brought people to enjoy it with you", he said. Evie grinned when she saw Fives and Echo, as well as Commander Tano. There was also a clone she didn't recognize.
"Aw, Captain, you shouldn't have", she teased as she stood up, brushing past him and pulling her brothers into a hug.
Fives and Echo laughed and hugged her in return. She grinned, and they all took a seat around the table she had claimed. Evie sat between Rex and Echo.
"So, what brings a Jedi to the clone bar?" Evie asked, smiling as she leaned back in her seat.
"I asked Rex to introduce me to a few more clones", the padawan said. "He said you and your brothers were some of the best ones around."
Evie grinned. "Did you really say that, Captain?"
Rex rubbed the back of his head, a bashful look on his face. "Well... you have saved my skin more times than I can count."
Evie chuckled, before turning to the clone she hadn't met. "What's your name? I'm Evie."
Fives spoke for the clone. "This is Tup. He's my best friend!"
Evie put on a offended look, placing a hand over her heart. "I thought I was your best friend, Fives. How could you betray me like this?"
"Sorry, Evie", Fives laughed. "You'll have to find a new best friend."

Evie huffed before turning to Rex. "Captain, will you do me the honor of being my best friend?"
Rex blinked in a surprise, a dumbfounded look on his face. This led to a series of snickers all around the table, but Evie just burst out laughing.
"Sorry, sir", Evie said. "Shouldn't have put you on the spot like that."
He laughed nervously, before glancing over at Ahsoka, who seemed to grasp his meaning. She looked over at the boys.
"Hey, boys, wanna go get some drinks?" Ahsoka said. They all cheered and walked over to the bar with her. Evie was going to follow but a hand on her elbow stopped her. She looked back to see Rex, who was watching her. She tilted her head at him.
"Sir?" Evie asked. "Aren't we going to get drinks?"
Rex opened his mouth to speak, before he closed his mouth again. Evie tilted her head.
"You okay, Captain?" she asked. "You're not normally one to forget how to speak?"
Her words made him chuckle softly. "Yeah, I know. It's just... I know you were joking, but would you want to be my best friend?"
Evie's breath caught in her throat. "I..." she closed her mouth again and thought over her words. "Let's just say that there was some truth in that joke, sir."
Rex smirked. "Well, if you're going to be my best friend then, you are to call me by my name when not on duty."
Evie snorted. "The way you phrased that makes it sound like we're creating a contract, Rex."
"That was the point, Glitch." He smirked at the nickname, and her mouth dropped open in shock.
"Oh, you did not just go there, buckethead", she said as she picked up and threw his helmet at him. Rex only chuckled, catching his helmet with ease, and placing it back on the table. Evie shook her head in amusement, just as the others came back.

"Hey, Evie, we got you a drink too!" Echo said. She grinned before glancing over at Rex.
"Did you grab one for Rex too?" she asked. The boys all nodded, but stopped in their tracks when they registered that she had used his name. Evie chuckled at their surprised, slightly scared faces.
"Uh... Evie... you used the captain's name", Echo said warily.
"Yeah, Glitch. You used my name", Rex said in amusement. Evie sent a glare his way as she playfully punched his arm.
"Unless you stop calling me that, I'm going to come up with an annoying nickname for you one day Rexy", she smirked. Rex groaned at her first attempt.
"Good luck with that, Glitch", Rex replied. Evie rolled her eyes before turning back to the boys and Ahsoka.
"So, we gonna have a drink, or what?" she asked. They set the drinks down on the table and everyone took their respective places.
"So..." Fives started, sharing a glance with Echo, who continued the thought.
"You guys want to tell us what happened?" he asked. Evie shrugged.
"Maybe, maybe not", she said, glancing at Rex, who had an amused smile on his face. Ahsoka spoke up.
"She asked Rex to be her best friend, remember?"
A chorus of ohs went around the table, causing Evie to laugh. Fives spoke, which drew attention to Evie.
"Also, Evie, I thought you hated the name Glitch. Why are you letting Rex call you that?"
Evie's breath caught in her throat, and she looked away, ignoring the thrumming feeling in her chest.
"He doesn't say it like the others did", she finally said. Everyone waited for her to elaborate, leaving an awkward silence. Finally Evie got up, breaking the tension.
"I'm going to go get some fresh air", she said, walking away to the door. As soon as she stepped outside, she relaxed slightly. She went to the side of the building and leaned against the wall, closing her eyes as she tried to relax. But all that did was bring back the taunting voices echo through her head.
"Evie", a familiar voice called to her, distracting her from the voices that continuously taunted her. "Evie, are you okay?"
She opened her eyes to see Rex standing in front of her. She averted her gaze and sighed.
"I will be. I have to be. So Echo and Fives don't worry about me", she said, trying to sound strong. Her voice wavered at the end of her sentence.
"Do you want to talk about it?" Rex asked. Evie shrugged.
"Not here, if I'm being honest. I don't know who could eavesdrop, and I don't need anyone else knowing my struggles."
"That's fair", Rex said. "We can talk about it later, if you'd like?"
Evie smiled. "I'd like that a lot, Rex. I really would."
"Let's go finish our drinks, shall we?" Rex asked. Evie smiled.
"Yes, let's."

Sara's (not really) Fabulous System Armageddon, Book I: The World Ended at Rush Hour
Planet Earth, Monday, October 7th, 2019. 18:30 * * On a fateful day, during rush hour in eastern North America, Heavens and Hell crumbled and fell from their higher dimension on Earth. It came from "above" but not the same above we regard in our tridimensional Euclidean reasoning. No, it came from "above" as in from a higher dimension. Bits and pieces of those places fell on Earth from all directions, this time in tridimensional Euclidean space. Satellites, the ISS, and space debris all were wiped clean from orbit. Even those that didn't crash with the falling debris were knocked off orbit by the shockwaves. On the ground, power distribution lines were disrupted and most power facilities were left abandoned by their dead staff. Most of these had emergency shutdown routines that engaged in a few days. Some others had a survivor among their staff that followed protocol and activated their SCRAM switches, stopping the power plant. Long-distance communication disappeared the internet along with it. The world was plunged into technological darkness. Nine hundred and ninety-nine out of every thousand human beings perished immediately in the pulse of magical energy from the torn spatial boundary. Spirits were rent asunder and vanished, their fate neither salvation nor damnation, only oblivion. The criteria used for this culling was latent magic potential. It didn't discriminate against education, gender, age, or ethnic group. But of the around seven million survivors, most would meet their doom moments later. Those on moving vehicles, like the ones driving on highways suddenly had to contend with high-speed uncontrolled cars and trucks driven by corpses. Trapped in their vehicles and helpless, they became part of the long snake of crushed metal. Very few survived. Those in the air or out in the sea were alone and probably unable to control their rides. Airplanes crashed, and ships kept their course or drifted away, depending on their autopilot. Several ended their own lives in utter despair after seeing their loved ones die in front of them. Another large group would die at the hands of other survivors. Violence and aggression became the norm. Only a few sparse pockets of not-so-sane survivors managed to band together and cooperate for the sake of mutual survival. The sole survivor in a five-over-one apartment building in Georgia, a girl became the keystone to humanity's survival. Sara's fabulous System Apocalypse had just started. She has only one remark. It was anything but fabulous. * * Updates every Wednesday and Sunday.
