《Legacy of Earth》Chapter 15 – The Serpent of Venus

This is a familiar scene, Alon thought as he found himself staring at the ceiling of the Medical Bay where Rachel was seen running out to call out to someone and not long after his parents, Hayato, Dain and Tsuna ran in.

"You're one reckless bastard!" Hayato laughed while Dain and Tsuna let out sighs of relief as his parents began to talk to Rachel about any lasting effects on him and his recovery.

"The things I do for love…" Alon whispered weakly as he sat up coughing up blood in the process.

"Take it easy," Rachel told him as she and Henri assisted him, doing so he felt something by his side and found Marina sleeping next to him. "You've been unconscious for an entire week for you to recover after removing the limiters."

"That long?" Alon asked in a panicked voice waking up Marina who at first stared at him with surprise and then proceeded to punch him in the face. "I deserved that."

"Honestly we all should take turns doing that to you," Rachel said showing him the footage of the battle from the bridge of the Luna Sea.

It showed the five Carriers closing in, first to launch was Tsuna's Zio and was then followed by the ReZio. Ten seconds later the ReZio vanished leaving behind a faint trail of light from Mech thrusters.

Thirty Seconds later the first of the five exploded, indicating at Alon had finally destroyed the first one by that point.

Then sixty seconds later the second one launched three raiders but were killed in twenty seconds and the second Carrier was sliced in half causing it to erupt in a fiery explosion.

Finally forty later a Kataphract was launched but it was violently thrown back inside and something caused it to explode destroying the third Carrier with the Video ending on the image of the ReZio flying past them at high speeds.

One hundred and sixty seconds?! Alon thought as he slumped back to his bed to the surprise of no one given the damage done to his body.

"Congratulations you perhaps set the record of fasted time a Mech managed to wreck a warship," Henri said half jokingly crossing her arms. "Not only did you manage to give all of us the time to escape but also made us a legit threat to the Sovereign now."

"Told you those Gestalt Adaptors were helpful in the long wrong." Alon scoffed and turned to their father. "Please don't tell us you plan on doing that again?" Their father asked worriedly.

"Only as a last resort."

"Then let's hope that never happens." Their mother commented with a sigh of relief.

"So what's my next mission?" Alon asked much to the concern of Marina and their Parents. Hayato and the others seemed to have caught on from it judging from their surprised looks as well, which at most confused Alon.

"That's something you need to worry about later on," Hayato shook his head and nodded the others to vacate the room. "Why don't you take a rest for now."

Alon agreed but something about it didn't it well with him.

According to Rachel, he was to stay bedridden for several more days to fully recover after rupturing his organs. So Alon was forced to stay there for a little longer but that didn't mean that he was kept in the dark.

For one he had learned that the Civil War had ended in the favor of the Rebels, however, the Principality expressed interest in aiding the Istar-Zuhayir or the Zuhayir Loyalists and the Wild Hunt Factions now that it had become clear that the Sovereign had sided with the Istar-Svortza or the Svortza Loyalists and the Sisters of Peace Faction. However that the Istar-Zuhayir had expressed that they intend to return to Venus but no mention of whether or not they would take the Principality on that offer.

If that were to be true then this would spiral the war into a much larger conflict as it is, Alon concluded grimly. As he took a deep sigh and watched many videos showing that the Svortza faction now publicly using Sovereign Weaponry as part of their army, his eyes landed on the Zio-N that was saluting Ptolema Svortza as she marched with her army towards the ruins of Aksai while burning the banners of the Wild Hunt and the Zuhayir Loyalists. However, there was a glimmer of a silver lining as there had been a total of at least twenty to thirty more ships filled with the Zuhayir Loyalists en route to meet up with Erys who also happens to take up over forty per cent of the Istarian Army.

While this would mean that the Matriarchy has now aligned with the Sovereign, whether or not this makes them a puppet state is out of the question but their involvement drew outcry from the other nations pointing out that the Istarian Civil war is none of their business but all they can do without siding against the Sovereign is to simply protest.

And then there's the elephant in the room.

Thanks to footage of his performance in taking out three Sovereign Warships in quick succession. He was now declared an Ace Pilot and holds the Nickname of Serpent of Venus with the Sovereign aligned users calling in a monster that could be the biggest threat that the Sovereign could face while the Principality supporters, and to an extent, the Istar-Zuhayir supporters, view him as a symbol of courage and defiance.

Whether he likes it or not he's become a military figure now.

Alon sighed as he lay down on his bed once more with a bored yawn. He wanted to go see the ReZio, run maintenance and even upgrade it.

As for the future operations of Memento Mori, they are currently en route for the Ercurian Union on Mercury. Based on what Alon currently read about the Union is that they're a gathering of various corporations that hold a monopoly on the Metalworking business on the planet.

It was also there that before the fall of the Terran Federation the planet was once a massive metal refinery place serving as the main distributor of metals used in construction from Mechs and Warships to even space colonies, but when the Federation fell the workers were forced to adapt into the planet turning massive industrial zone into the barely livable world.

These days Mercury is known for three things;

The Heliopolis are these massive residential worlds that are retrofitted labour camps for all the residents to live in with the highest standard of living the equivalent of the cheapest hotel room on Mars.

Solar Furnaces, thanks to being close to the Sun the Ercurian created massive Solar Stations which harness the power of the sun instead of relying on Nuclear Fusion to power everything to the point where their beam weapon is built almost differently compared to be the standard one.

And finally their Living Metal Weapons or the LMWs which are extremely flexible and highly adaptable materials they programmed to control, and if rumours are to be believed hen the Union developing transformable Mechs.

"Yeah I was born there," He saw Wu walking up to him holding new designs for the ReZio. "Trust me when I say that place is an absolute hellhole. Even more so when compared to Venus."

"Can our Suits handle it?" Alon asked as he read the upgrades on the ReZio.

Namely, a pair of Kinetic Katars, a Beam Anti-Material Rifles and something called a Long-distance Auxillary Multi-purpose Integrated Assault Unit or L.A.M.I.A. Unit all of which are "gifts" made by the Istar-Zuhayir, the so-called gifts are clearly from smitten young women much to the annoyance of Marina as according to Henri she had a very frightening look on her face when she learnt of the incident.

"Nope I've asked help from Istarian Engineers to handle it but for now what do you think about the Upgrades?" Wu asked with a shit eating grin on his face.

"I wanna see the Lamia."

[Legacy of Earth]

"Whoa." Alon, who had just been discharged immediately made a beeline towards the hangar. Turns out while Alon was off defending Aksai, upgrades were done to the Luna Sea expanding the hangar and proving the weapons and armour of the ship allowing itself to be able to defend itself from any future attacks alongside volunteers from the Istar-Zuhayir who wanted to join Memento Mori as well.

"That's the Lamia?" Alon asked looking at the unit in the Hangar.

It was a White and Lavender four winged Fighter with a pair of twin beam railguns. According to Wu that the Lamia connects to the ReZio providing a mobility boost while the railguns would be mounted on the waist adding extra damage.

"Yeap and I'm the pilot," Marina said tackling him from behind to hug him. "Congratulations on getting discharged." She smiled at him who was now wearing a custom Suit one designed for Piloting.

"Congratulations on being able to have your unit to pilot," Alon said excitedly as she leaned against the side of the L.A.M.I.A. proudly.

"That's right so you better not slow me down." She said proudly causing Alon and Wu to scoff, but Alon realized something. "That reminds me, can the Mechs handle the climate of Mercury? On account is closer to the Sun and all." Alon asked as Marina stood up properly.

"Don't worry I gave the Mechs additional armour plating and improved cooling tanks to prevent any cases of overheating," Wu explained as he showed them the modifications done to the ReZio and the LAMIA which had additional cooling tanks installed around the engine and cockpit. "But that doesn't mean you can pull the same stunt as you did before on Venus."

"I'd prefer not to get cooked inside my Cockpit so I'm good," Alon answered.

"Good cause I don't want to see our kids dead on the next operation."

Both Marina and Alon turned to find their parents now in standard Memento Mori Ground Forces Equipment, thanks to an increased Staff-size Memento Mori had grown into a sizable military force that despite having most of their resources and manpower originating from the Istar-Zuhayir they are still an independent faction.

Alon's blood drained from his face when he realized that the two are now in the fighting force.

"Why are you fighting?!" Alon asked in outrage causing everyone in the hangar to look at them in surprise, he instantly regretted saying that but at that exact moment, he had lost control of his emotions and immediately proceeded to yell at them.

"Alon!" Marina grabbed him by the arm in a feared attempt to calm him down. Alon took a deep breath as he rubbed his eyelids and let out a deep sigh as he looked around and saw Wu and the other older Memento Mori members looking at him worriedly.

"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have yelled like that," Alon said crouching and beginning to take deep breaths as he felt his breathing become laboured. "I was just worried that's all there is to it. I was hoping that you people don't have to fight already while Marina and I are already doing this for us and—"

"Alon."

He looked up to find their parents offering his hands, the looks on their faces weren't surprised or angry as though he had yelled. If any they had the look of worry instead which only made his mood worse.

"We know you're fighting hard for us, But we can't sit idly by and do housework while our children are out there risking their lives for us." Their father spoke as Alon stood up finally feeling a little better than before. "Let us help you in this way, but you don't have to worry about our well being."

"I understand, but—"

"We'll be fine, it's better than staying on the ship with nothing to do." Their Mother insisted as the two of them walked off while everyone else began to return to their usual routine. Alon just quietly nodded in defeat as he ran his fingers through his hair, it had grown a lot longer since he had joined to the point where it had started to reach his shoulders. Maybe he can ask—

"Do you want me to cut your hair?" Marina asked as though she had read his mind. "It's hard to pilot when your bangs get in the way."

"I guess so," Alon said as he noticed the bangs were starting to get into his line of sight, which could be an occupational hazard. Marina smiled as she nodded at him to follow her instead which Alon shrugged as he placed the plans for the ReZio Lamia which is the official name for the unit combined as the two made their way into Marina's room.

Ever since the expansion Upgrade of the Luna Sea each crew mate now has a room of their own instead of sharing rooms, Marina herself managed to get her room now that she is an official Operator as Aqua.

"I like what you did to this place," Alon said looking around her room which was surprisingly decorated as it had a few stuffed toys and two framed pictures, one was a picture of her first day as an Operator next to their parents and a separate one for both of them on that one evening in the Chrysia Forest.

"You know we can decorate our rooms right?" She told him with a smile as she readied a chair for him to sit on. "You should try it, your room looks like a prison cell with how liminal space it looks."

"I guess I couldn't find the time to work on that," Alon scratched the back of his head. Between missions he spends his time in Training or learning how to maintaining the Mechs and little to no time for him to rest and relax unlike Marina. "I guess that's why I'm so stressed all the time." He concluded with a low voice as he took a seat while Marina grabbed a spare blanket and draped it over him.

"So you do you want your cut?" Marina teased him.

"Just like before." Alon smiled, she was always the one who knew how to cut his hair.

"Got it." She smiled, no she was practically beaming as she proceeded to cut his hair. Alon closed his eyes as the hypnotic sound of the scissors began to trim through his hair went like clockwork it's as if….

It's as if…

They were just sitting in the kitchen of their home back in Thaumasia, Alon had just been given a scolding by their parents for looking like a bum for how long his hair was which was far longer than it was because Alon was just lazy to get it cut mostly at how expensive a haircut was. He would have gotten into an even bigger problem if Marina had not offered to cut his hair in exchange for an extra allowance.

It was one of those happy moments back then that made Alon regret the choice of helping out Tsuna. But would he back then have to agree to let Tsuna be taken by the Soldiers if he had known what was in store for him? And if he had turned him in, would they be left alone or would they be under surveillance for their entire lives that would affect their own lives in the long run?

"Do you...miss our home?" Alon asked opening his eyes as Marina was finishing up. "Do you...resent me for getting us into this mess?" He added as he took the blanket off him.

"I mean I'm surprised that you were able to do something so reckless in such a short time but we don't blame you." She said running her hands through his shoulders as he began to slouch.

"I'm pathetic," Alon said in a low voice but not enough for Marina to hear him. "As the eldest, I should owe up to my responsibility for getting our family into this mess, and yet here I am losing my temper over the idea of our parents joining the fight."

"You shouldn't put the idea of you fighting alone for our parents," Marina said wrapping her arms around him, for a moment it made him forget everything wrong in the Galaxy as long as he was around her arms. "It's not your fault."

"You know how what to say to cheer me up." Alon smiled as he kissed her on the cheek.
