《A Paladin's Rogue》Chapter 14

When we got to Caderyn’s home on the outskirts of a small rural town called Huge, Nexxis stopped at the edge of the yard to let us off and shift back. The cute cabin home stood on these large wooden pillars while built along a few large oak trees. “I-um-I’ll stay back here.” I said softly, a nervous feeling creeping into my stomach.
Malachi nodded to me but was also trying to reassure me before he crossed the yard and made his way up the tall steps, as he went to knock though the door flung open before his knuckles made contact. My uncle; a tall, old sun elf with medium length white hair and matching beard; toward over Malachi while holding his staff, radiating an intimidating aura. As his eyes recognized the tiefling the intimidation vanished and he looked relieved, “You have no idea how blessed I am to feel your aura again, Malachi.” Caderyn said.
“It’s good to see you too Master.” Malachi said, smiling warmly. Caderyn brought him into a hug as if it were his long lost son and it made my heart skip almost painfully. Zelaphor flew over and hugged Caderyn’s cheek which caused him to laugh boisterously.
“It’s good to see you too Zelaphor. I’m glad to see my battleaxe is well taken care of.”
Malachi parted from him and looked up, “I know we have some catching up to do, but there is someone I’d like you to meet.” He says. My uncle looked at him curiously before walking with Malachi down the stairs. The old elf was soon looking directly at me. My stomached dropped. I haven’t seen this man in a hundred years and he barely looks any different.
How do I say anything to him? I left… Not even writing a stupid letter… I’m a terrible niece. My heart skipped as they got closer though and I wiped my hands on my thighs before pushing the hair out of my face so he could see both my eyes. I braced myself to be reprimanded, “H-hi uncle Caderyn. Been awhile.” I said softly with a little wave and an attempt at a smile.
He didn’t recognize me at first, have I changed that much? But then his eyes went wide and he accidentally dropped his staff in disbelief and slowly approached me. He looked me over, I’m sure I remind him of his sister, my mother. “Is that truly you my young Ara?” He asks, still in shock but his tone was quiet and gentle. The shock morphed into pure joy and he wrapped his arms around me in a protective way. No yelling or anger, just relief. My eyes went wide in surprise. “The gods have blessed me yet again. You’re alive and safe.”
Malachi and Zelaphor were both happy as they watched us, the young tiefling had his arms crossed while Zelaphor leaned against his head.
“Y-You’re not mad?” I asked in disbelief, once the shock wore off I wrapped my arms around him and little tears fell from my eyes. “I’m so sorry it took me this long to come home…” I said just above a whisper, my voice unable to speak any higher.
“No, of course not.” Caderyn said as he held me more tightly. “And no need to apologize either, my dear niece. I’m just so glad that after a hundred years you’re still well. I’ve missed you so much.”
“I’ve missed you too uncle Cade… I have a lot to catch you up on. Like my 100th birthday, even though I celebrated alone I did choose my adult name.” I said trying to smile as I looked up at his face, the tears still in my eyes. “You’ll be so disappointed in me uncle… I-I thought you’d be furious… I stayed away…” I started getting anxious.

If he knows what you’ve been up to. Killing people, stealing, a famous criminal, he will be disappointed. As a fucking Paladin he won’t be too happy that his only niece is a criminal. Zagasihr said through his fangs.
“Then we’ll have to celebrate tonight. Drinks and all. You’ll have to share your new name with me.” Caderyn said encouragingly. “And I could never be mad at you my dear. Life has put in a very unfair predicament with a demon in your mind. I’m just so relieved to see you’re okay.” Caderyn said, he didn’t seem to want to let go of me. My heart felt warm. “I was so worried.”
“My name is—Lia.” I said soft and unsure. “Are your cupboards and ice chest dry? Should Malachi and I go shopping?” I teased softly, I didn’t really want to let go either. We can’t stay in the yard all day though. “I didn’t mean to worry you… You’re right though, Zagasihr has been a chore.” I said. He huffed in my head, reminding me of a toddler.
“Lia is a wonderful name. Your mother would have loved it.” Caderyn said and leaned back to look me over. I lit up as he complimented me on my new name. He snorted a laugh, “How did you know my cupboards were empty? They’re not so bad.” He jokes to lighten the mood. “We’ll talk more serious topics later. Please come on inside.” He said as he finally released me and went to pick up his staff.
“Well I know how your cooking is. I was worried if you’d starve to death or something.” I snickered.
“My cooking isn’t so bad. You’re just being dramatic.” He teased back.
“It was that bad master…” Malachi mumbled under his breath as Zelaphor snickered.
Caderyn soon led me inside his adorably cozy home. The scent of tea wafted through the home and the sunlight beautifully illuminated the furniture and potted plants. The home had an interesting design as the tree branches and roots from the neighboring tree merged with the architecture. Malachi followed behind us and made sure to hold the door so Nexxis could enter with us.
I looked around and something new caught my eye, “You—added a room?” I asked as I gestured to a room that wasn’t there when I lived here so long ago. “But don’t worry. I plan on cooking tonight.” I grinned, “I’ve gotten even better in the hundred years I’ve been gone.”
“Oh, that.” Caderyn said with a smirk as Malachi hovered by the front door looking adorably embarrassed. I raised an eyebrow at him before looking back at my uncle. “When Malachi was a young lad, he was learning to control his lightning magic. Something he was born with and has been learning to master. However, there was an accident while I was away and Malachi blew off the rear of my home.”
“I remember that!” Zelaphor laughed, “We spent all summer repairing it and building the new room” She said as she reverted to her humanoid form.
“I didn’t mean to…” Malachi said with a sigh.
I snickered, “Well it doesn’t look bad—Just different.” I shrugged, “I mean, how can you even be mad at something that cute?” I asked pointing at the tiefling.
“No, I wasn’t mad. Poor boy was in tears about the whole thing, but he paid for the damage with his work.” Caderyn said as he sat down in his old favorite chair, giving me a curious look. “Cute you say? Well, speaking of Malachi. How in the divine did you two meet? It must be fate that my adopted son finds my own long lost niece?” He asked as he laid his staff to the side. Zelaphor quickly jumped to the kitchen like she never left and started prepping the tea. I couldn’t help but feel she also didn’t want to be a part of the conversation.

“Uh well—I’m not sure if you’ve heard of my reputation… but I had a bounty on him. But—well it’s complicated… Nexxis told me it was fate that we found each other.” I said softly, a light blush touching my cheeks as I sat on the couch closest to my uncle.
“Ah yes. Lia Nailo. Fame bounty hunter. I should have guessed it was you after hearing your family name.” Caderyn said as he relaxed a bit in his chair. “But it must be fate. The gods brought the two of you before me for a reason.” My uncle then looked at Malachi, “And why in Oerth would you have a bounty? Don’t tell me you were thieving again…” He said, being stern. I raised an eyebrow.
Malachi eventually set his bag and shield down before walking over a sitting beside me. My heart fluttered a bit. He kept his full plate armor on and looked tired but somehow not uncomfortable He shook his head, “I’ve done no such thing in years master. My pockets are clean.”
“Thieving eh?” I asked with a smirk before I turned back to my uncle and shook my head, “A demon wearing his mother’s skin sought me out claiming her son was missing. I thought I was reuniting a mother with a missing child.” I sighed, conveniently leaving out that I knew his dad.
“I was only a small time thief. Nothing major.” Malachi tried to defend himself.
“Nothing major? My son, you’ve stolen thousands of coins worth of treasures. You were a troubled child.” Caderyn said with a shake of his head. He changed to a somber look, “I’m sorry though, Malachi. I’m sure it was difficult to see. Your mother is in a good place. I’m sure her soul is resting peacefully.” He said, trying to reassure the young paladin. “I’m glad to see you unharmed.”
Malachi nodded his head softly, “Thank you. I know she’s okay. It’s hard to see a demon trying to pretend to be my atara.”
I was quiet for a moment, thinking to myself while playing with my hands in my lap. My mind was all over the place; thinking about all the coin I could have made and might bug Malachi about later, Allmokoth, my uncle, and finally my own mother. “I’m sorry, I should have been more careful.” I said softly.
“You don’t have to apologize Lia. You didn’t know.” Malachi said trying to reassure me.
“Something troubling you my dear? You look lost in thought.” Caderyn asked. Zelaphor returned and started passing around tea to everyone.
“Uh-well… I get lost in thought a lot anymore.” I said softly. “I don’t know if I’m particularly troubled. There was something I had been meaning to ask you.” I said turning blushed as I pointed at Malachi before looking back at my uncle. “And there are things I wanted to talk to you about… catch you up on… and I-I need your help.”
Malachi looked a little puzzled as I pointed at him. My uncle shared a smile with me though, “Would you like to talk in private my dear? If not, no worries, my ears are open.” He said supportively.
“I don’t mind speaking in front of the others. Malachi should know who he’s traveling with.” I said trying to come across confident despite how I actually feel. “A hundred years ago I was kidnapped by pirates. I eventually became apart of their family.” I said flicking my hoop earring. I received it as a symbol of becoming apart of the family. “During those years I became close to a cleric named Therona. She gave me a book that may have answers to getting rid of Zagasihr. But—”
Don’t tell them. I won’t allow you to see in that book! Zagasihr yelled.
“I haven’t been able to open the book.” I said, I wasn’t comfortable with opening up about the other stuff yet and despite the demon’s warning, I decided to start here. “Can you help me…?”
“I’m more than happy to help in anyway I can. I’m so sorry I was unable to rescue you… I should have looked harder for you.” Caderyn said softly.
“You did what ya could you old geezer… You were gone for weeks on end.” Zelaphor said as she patted my uncle on the shoulder. Malachi listened carefully to the conversation but remained quiet as he glanced between me and Caderyn.
“It’s alright uncle. I was never upset with you.” I said with a gentle smile. “I—I um… I had a difficult time fighting Zagasihr while I was away…” I admitted softly, I was so ashamed. I watched the floor as I waited for the disappointment in his tone.
“I’m sure you did… The fact you’re still here though, and that your soul hasn’t been consumed after all this time, is an absolute miracle.” Caderyn said, praising me. This surprised me and I had to glance up at him. “I can only imagine the emotional and physical struggle. I’ll be glad to take a look at that book whenever you’re ready. I have need to spend an evening studying material.”
“Let me know what I can do to help. I’m not my master, but I know a few things too.” Malachi said wanting to help.
“There was a point that I wanted to give in. Let him take over… But he couldn’t. And it was torture. So I tried suicide. But that also failed. Every time…” I whispered as I went back to looking at the floor. It was painful to say these out loud, I was so ashamed. “But that’s okay. I have a new drive now. Renewed motivation.” I smiled at the floor, picturing Malachi’s toothy grin. “I’ll at least grab the book for you—” I said as I reached for my bag.
I said no! Zagasihr shouted and smacked the back of my head.
I yelped in pain and grabbed my head as Zagaishr tried to take over so I wouldn’t grab the book for my uncle. I clamped my eyes shut as I held back a scream, Leave me alone!
Nexxis jumped to her feet and growled fiercely, looking ready to pounce at me. Back off demon. She warned.
I will not let her grab that book! There could be harmful information in there. Zagasihr growled.
In a swift motion, Caderyn reached for my bag and grabbed for the book. “Malachi! Now!” Caderyn called out. Malachi quickly placed his hands on my and casted Turn the Faithless to push back Zagasihr. I was familiar with this spell as my uncle used it often during the time I lived here. He was whispering in ancient celestial to try and bring me relief. It was working, Zagasihr was being pushed back into a little cage. It wouldn’t hold him forever, but it would keep him from hurting me for now. He continued to shout and hurl fire around his cage. Luckily those fits only caused mild headaches.
My hands slowly relaxed and soon I covered my face. “I-I’m sorry…” I said softly. I was grateful for the help but ashamed that I needed it. “This- This is why I haven’t been able to take a look in the book.” I said trying to recover my breath.
“You don’t have to apologize my dear. I’m sorry to have put you in such a situation. I’ll read through the book this evening and see what I can find.” Caderyn said and thanked Malachi.
The younger paladin nodded as he removed his hands from me. “You okay..? Do you need anything?” He asks, looking at me with concern. Zelaphor rushed off and eventually returned with water for me.
I softly thanked Zelaphor as I gulped down most of the water. “Please do… it’s gotten worse—recently.” I said reluctant. I peak at Malachi with a light blush on my cheeks. All because I fell for a paladin. Worth it. “I-I’m okay. I’m sorry you had to see that.”
“We’ll get this taken care of… I’m so sorry Lia.” Uncle said.
“Fucking asshole demons.” Zelaphor mumbled as she went back to the kitchen.
“You don’t have to keep apologizing. It’s alright. You can’t really control what Zagasihr does…” Malachi said sympathetically as he looked into my eyes.
That same spark from before pulsed through me again, catching me off guard. My eyes widened a little and despite the effort, I couldn’t rip my eyes away from him. I started blushing a bit. “Y-Yeah. But I just feel like I-I’m not fighting hard enough.” I said almost breathlessly. I felt my eyes staring into his soul the way his were to mine this time. Something was different, something deep was there and I wanted to know what it was.
Nexxis watched us in peaked interest as she had returned to her relaxed state after Zagasihr was suppressed.
“I don’t think it’s about being weak or not trying hard enough. You just needed the right people to help you.” Malachi said. “You have us now.” His piercing gold eyes wouldn’t leave mine either as that strong connection held us both in place. It made my heart beat faster. His eyes looked like they were studying me.
Caderyn ran his hand through his beard as he looked over us carefully. “He is right Lia. You aren’t alone in this battle. We will help you.” He said supportively. He couldn’t explain what he saw between us. Was it love at first sight or something more?
I almost ignored all the commentary as I watched Malachi, everything was muffled even though I was listening. “Did you feel it too?” I whispered to him. “You’re the reason I picked up the fight again.” I admitted in a voice that was barely audible. It was hard not to keep my mouth shut around him. Thank the gods Zagasihr was trapped right now.
Malachi, with his mouth partially agape, nodded his head. “Yeah, I think so.” He said softly back. He looked in awe yet puzzled. He cutely and curiously tilted his head, “Really? Because of me?” He asked. Something stirred in him that left him deep in internal thought on what was happening. Why did he want to be so close to Lia?
I nodded in response but was soon lost in my own thoughts. What was going on? It feels like it would be almost painful to be apart from him. I’ve only felt this way one other time so I’m more surprised now. This was more than what I originally thought. My cheeks burned more as I thought about it. I instinctually touched his cheek but dropped my hand as I realized what I was doing. I started to play with a strand of my hair. “S-sorry.” I managed to say. Why am I being so timid? I straightened up and put on a smirk. “Man you’re cute.” I said but the blush remained.
Malachi started to turn a bit pink in the cheeks and let out an adorable little laugh, “Me? Cute? I wouldn’t say that. I look like the Abyss threw me up.” He joked. Uncle had such a smirk on his face as he watched us.
“I heard that Malachi! Don’t be talkin’ shit like that! You are adorable!” Zelaphor shouted from the other room.
“Well I find you very attractive.” I said crossing my arms still smirking. “From the tip of your horns to the tip of your tail.” As I came to that realization my heart did a weird flutter again and my stomach filled with butterflies.
“Th-Thank you.” Malachi said with a loss for words. He clearly had a lack of social skills but I found that even more endearing. He awkwardly stretched to adjust his posture and to make sure he wasn’t all over me. When did we lean in so close? He hissed under his breath probably stretching the stiches a bit too far.
“Malachi? Are you okay?” Caderyn asked, noticing the tiefling’s discomfort.
“Yeah. Just sore. Had a demon encounter earlier before arriving here.” Malachi said causing my uncle to raise an eyebrow.
“Well then, take off your armor. Don’t hurt yourself more.” Caderyn said but watched him suspiciously.
I didn’t like how Malachi was trying to play off his serious wound and my hands had raised toward him on instinct as he hissed. “He was badly wounded earlier. I patched him up but he didn’t get enough rest.” I said shooting Malachi an accusing glare. I reached for his armor, wanting to help him remove it. “Why the hell are you this stubborn?” I asked muttered annoyed. Why hadn’t he already taken his armor off? We planned to stay a bit here so there was no need to keep it on. “You ain’t lying but you ain’t tellin’ the full truth either.” I accused; I was very concerned for him but it came across aggressive as I wasn’t used to showing so much affection for someone.
“Why haven’t you used your magic to heal your wounds?” Caderyn asked.
“Malachi hasn’t fully rested. He was drained really bad when he was attacked.” Zelaphor said, having reentered the room with more tea.
Caderyn lifted his staff and smacked Malachi on the top of his head. My eyes went wide with shock. “Why aren’t you taking care of yourself? Why did you not rest?” He asked like a stern and worried father.
“I don’t know--!” Malachi said responding to us all at once, looking overwhelmed. Once we removed his armor he leaned forward and put his face in his hands with his elbows resting on his knees for support. He looked exhausted both physically and mentally. His barriers were gradually coming undone as he was home.
I shot my uncle a glare before looking back at Malachi worried. Sure I wanted to hit him too but at least I didn’t act on it. I started rubbing Malachi’s back. “It’s okay.” I said softly as I watched him, almost regretting my word choice earlier. I had an odd sharp pain shoot through my chest as I saw him like this.
“You’ve been through a lot, haven’t you my son.” Caderyn said softly. “Anything you wish to talk about?”
Malachi shook his head before lifting it, “No, not right now. Maybe later.” He said softly. “I’ll be right back.” He said standing and headed out the back door. Maybe he was using the restroom or getting some fresh air. The atmosphere was heavy inside.
I rose on instinct and started to slowly follow, something tugging at my heart that made me take step after conflicting step. I should let him have his space but I wanted to be with him. Comfort and hold him.
“Be patient with him my dear. Malachi probably has a lot on his mind. This is normally how he cools off. He isn’t a very open person.” Caderyn said. I looked out the back window and noticed Malachi had climed the huge oak tree and was meditation on a higher branch. He looked peaceful enough with his tail wrapped around the branch for balance. He almost looked like he was sunbathing. Silly kitty.
I didn’t turn around, just stared at Malachi. “I’ve noticed.” I mumbled. Something just didn’t feel right though. “I- don’t feel right.” I admitted out loud although it was mostly to myself.
“Is something wrong? Should I go with you?” Caderyn asked looking ready to stand, “Is Zagasihr making you feel off?”
“Should I go?” I asked curiously. “No—He’s quiet.” I said shaking my head. “I just don’t understand. These feelings. They don’t make sense… uncle, I’m confused.”
Caderyn finally stood and walked over to me. “Do you have romantic feelings for Malachi?” He asked. “It’s okay to be confused, but something tells me there’s more to these emotions than just butterfly feelings…” He looked down at me, “I think you should go. Malachi needs someone to be close and open with.”
I nodded, “It’s much stronger than just butterflies.” I said softly. I looked up at my uncle before heading outside to be with Malachi. I looked up and determined the angle before finally teleporting to a branch across from Malachi, perching there. “May I join you?” I asked gently as I watched him.
Malachi was mildly startled but quickly relaxed as he saw me and nodded his head. “Sorry for walking out. I needed a moment. I hope I didn’t offend you.” He said as he looked off toward the horizon, watching the birds sing and fly.
“I- don’t think I’m particularly offended.” I said softly as I climbed over to be next to him and relax on the branch. “Wanna talk about it?”
“I don’t know… I think I’m just on edge right now. Finding it hard to relax despite being home.” Malachi said. His tone was soft and his eyes were somber. “I haven’t been doing well as a paladin. It’s been hard these past few weeks… but I’ve been down and felt like I’ve lost my spark.” He finally said. It was clear he felt like he wasn’t doing well at upholding his duties as a paladin. He unconsciously moved closer to me as we sat there.
I instinctively moved closer to him as well, it was so easy to fall for him while Zagasihr was dormant. I gingerly placed my hand on his thigh, “Well I think you’re an excellent paladin. You have so much potential, who knows, you might even surpass uncle Cade.” I said with a little smile. “The way you simply help people and want to do good in the world—it’s inspiring. You see light.” I rested my cheek on my knee as I watched him, “What triggered this? I know we haven’t known each other very long… but I just want to show you how amazing you are. And don’t forget—you’re suppose to be the knight that saves me again and again ‘cuz apparently I’m a super damsel.” I teased.
Malachi’s lips curved up just a bit at the edges as my words touched him, meaning a lot to him and began to heal his spark but before he could thank me, he started chuckling. “You’re not a damsel. You’re a brave and powerful warrior. You’re probably stronger than I’ll bever be.” He said complimenting me. He paused though and started thinking to himself so I waited to respond as he debated on speaking up. Finally he did as he watched the passing birds. “I felt pretty powerless against Allmokoth… as well as when I… lost a good many people. I’m still a novice of a paladin, still trying to learn the spells and techniques…” He said softly. “There feels like this ongoing battle within me. It’s always been very hard learning new radiant skills. As if it’s against the fiber of my nature…”
That is because it is. Zagasihr and I thought in sync. It surprised me at first to hear the demon but he wasn’t a threat right now so I calmed down.
“You told me I might be at one point.” I teased. “I doubt I could be stronger than you.” I shrugged but a blush heated my cheeks as he complimented me. I put my hand on his thigh and watched it. “Hmm. It makes sense when you think about it… every person has their struggles when learning. I’m sure uncle wasn’t perfect when he trained to be a paladin. I’m sure he lost people. You just gotta keep fighting, you’ll get stronger and you will win.” I said softly. “And that too—Maybe your infernal blood is fighting it, maybe Shothragot. That should just be drive to push harder. Look where you are. You can do so much! You’re wonderful! And I still think you’re too nice for your own good.” I snickered and looked at him with a little smile. “The fact that you, as a tiefling, have done something that none other has is amazing. You bring lesser races hope when the morons of the other races shun you. You’re hope.” I said speaking from the heart. He was my own beacon of hope and I wanted him to see that. My guard was down and I didn’t care.
“You really know how to compliment a guy, don’t you?” Malachi said. “Thank you. It really means a lot to hear you say all those nice things. I appreciate the reality check. Feels like my spirit is being lifted again.” He said as he seemed to glow. This aura of hope and confidence radiated off of him. He was blushing though as he glanced at my hand but made no comment or action toward it. He finally looked at me. “Speaking of Shothragot… Do you know anything else about it?” He asked. “Am I possessed? I don’t feel anything though. Maybe I should talk with Caderyn. I can’t imagine him being pleased by this news.”
I shook my head. “Nexxis would know and so would Zagasihr. But I think it’d be best to talk with Caderyn and Nexxis versus the other option…” I mumbled at the end. “I don’t think you’re possessed though, aside from saying you don’t feel it—you don’t act or look it either.” I said tilting my head.
“So if I’m not possessed, am I just being haunted?” He asks. “I’ll talk to Caderyn later… I’m so lost how this happened or what’s happening.” He ran a hand through his hair, his tail moved along the branch and brushed up against my leg. “Oh—sorry about that. Tail has a mind of its own.” He said embarrassed.
“Maybe it happened a lot time ago. A time before this craziness.” I shrugged but soon giggled. “I don’t mind, I love your tail. You can wrap it around me anytime.” I smiled.
“A long time ago… I wish I could remember more.” He mumbled. Does he suffer from memory loss? His cheeks started burning again, “Are you sure? My tail is obnoxiously big and it’s gotten me in a lot of trouble. People grab it, sometimes I trip people on accident, and this one time I moved my tail and lifted up a barmaid’s skirt—that was so embarrassing.” He said trying to be lighthearted as our talk of Shothragot was stressful.
I couldn’t not ask about the memory thing, “What can’t you remember? What time?” I asked but shook my head, maybe it was best for a different time. “You sure you weren’t subconsciously wanting a peak?” I teased. “But I’m sure, I absolutely adore it. Maybe it won’t get you in so much trouble with something else to focus on.” I winked and leaned in to give him a short kiss on the cheek, my own heating up as I did so. A weird spark hit my soul again that wasn’t there the first time I kissed him like this. How odd.
“I can’t remember a lot of things… Mostly of events before I met Caderyn.” He explained briefly, being surprisingly more open with me. He laughed though, “No! I didn’t want to look up her skirt! I swear I’m not that kid of a guy.” He said wiping at a tear. When I kissed his cheek, the end of his tail wrapped around my ankle, he looked so embarrassed.
“Maybe we can find out why on our journey together.” I said before giggling more, a musical sound. “You sure? Everyone has their dirty little secrets.” I walked two fingers up his arm before running them across his chin. I was very happy with his tail around my ankle and happy that he couldn’t seem to get it to let go. “Do you know how cute you are?” I asked as I watched him, an adorable smirk on my face.
“I’m sure.” Malachi said humorously pouty. “Pretty sure that barmaid was trying to get me thrown out.” He mumbled but relaxed as we sat there. “I-I wouldn’t say cute is the right word for me.” He said with a weak laugh. “Unlike you, I’m not the most appealing thing to look at.”
“So you think I’m cute?” I asked eying hm for a moment before giving him a brilliant smile. “Well I would like to happily disagree with that statement. I find you very appealing to look at. Can’t take my eyes off you sometimes.”
Malachi swayed side to side and had a very difficult time looking at me, very awkward about the whole thing. “Y-yeah, you’re a very attractive person.” He said quietly. “You have a very interesting taste in men if you find me appealing.”
I snickered, “Well I like to think I’m not exactly a normal person.” I said proudly. “Does it matter what my tastes are if they’re you?”
“N-no not really. Unless, you know, wanted to share?” He said still very awkward. It was obvious he never socialized with women. Or as least not often.
I giggled more and almost fell of the branch from laughing so hard. I caught myself though, “honestly, I don’t know. Muscular, taller than me—which isn’t hard—the tail is a major plus—um I don’t know. Basically you.”
“I’ll keep that on note.” Malachi said playfully as he lifted his hands up, “Oh--! Be careful. I know you can do that teleporting thing, but we are a bit high up” He said but noticed that I caught myself.
“I wasn’t gonna fall.” I giggled rolling my eyes. “I basically live in the trees.” I grinned showing off my beautiful teeth. “So what’s your type? Hmm?”
“You sure you aren’t a wood elf then?” He jokingly asked before getting lost in thought. “I’m not really sure if I ever thought about a type…” He said trying to brainstorm.
“Pretty sure.” I snickered. I moved closer to him and our thighs now rubbed together, “Well now you can. What do you like in a woman?” I asked leaning my chest against his arm and looked up at him from under my eyelashes.
“I-I suppose I’m attracted t-to strong, confident women.” He said as he started to fidget again. It was as if his body wasn’t sure what to do. “I’m sure physical t-traits wouldn’t be an appropriate topic.” His claws tapped against the bark.
I pressed closer to him still, “You can go into physical details. I did. I won’t get offended.” I teased, batting my eyelashes at him with a smirk on my face.
Malachi took a deep breath as his ears folded back. “I-I think short, c-curvy women are beautiful.” He said unsure about this, “I think elves are really pretty too…” He’s basically describing me at this point.
I flipped my long hair out, “Of course elves are beautiful” I said confidently. “So—I’m your type… Just like you’re mine?” I asked keeping my hand firmly on his thigh and fighting the urge to move it up to his chest.
“Y-Yeah I guess so.” He said as he glanced at me with a blushing smile. His breathing seemed to pick up and he became quite distracted. “Thanks for chatting with me. I am feeling better and calmer.” He said, never really having felt a woman’s touch before. Must be scrambling his mind.
“You sure you’re okay?” I asked tilting my head, noticing his breathing pace. I just wanted to be closer to him, comfort him, love on him, kiss him… But for now I pushed those thoughts aside.
“Y-Yeah, I am, I promise.” He said as his ears perked up. “Sorry, I don’t mean to be awkward about this whole interaction.”
I sighed and rested my chin on his shoulder. “It’s alright. I’m probably not making it easy.” I said softly with a regretful look in my eyes as I tried to keep my smile.
“Am I doing something wrong? I don’t mean to make you feel bad.” Malachi said as he caught my eyes looking at him.
I was surprised for a moment and involuntarily sat up, “N-no! You didn’t… Just thinking…” I said softly, looking off into the trees. Debating on speaking up. “Would this ever work out? Between us..? Like—more than just friends?” I asked after a long pause. I feared what his answer might be. Everything in my being pulled me to him but I didn’t know why or if he felt the exact same or what was going on.
“I.. wouldn’t mind something more.” He said softly, “But there feels like a lot of variables between us.” He was unsure, with Zagasihr and now Shothragot, there were things that could get either of us or both of us killed.
I felt a small sense of relief with his answer but now it was time to figure out the rest. “Like what? We already plan on helping each other with the—major issues.” I said referring to the demons. “It’s not really between us.. just some issues that we can handle together.” I tried to smile. “Whether we’re together or not—I at least plan on helping you even if it kills me.” I said softly looking at him with all the weight of my words. I can’t live without him so I will do whatever it takes to save him.
“I would rather it doesn’t kill you but thank you for your support. It means a lot to me.” He said. “Besides Zagasihr and now Shothragot… I’m not really sure if I’m the right guy for you.” He said somberly and it was clear it hurt him to say it out loud. “It has nothing to do with you. It’s more of my own faults and trails as a paladin.”
“How can you possibly say that no?” I asked in frustration. I stood up on the branch and ran my fingers through my hair. I thought we were past this. I thought maybe that connection would bring us closer. But all I feel is my heart breaking. “I didn’t see how we couldn’t fit any more perfectly… each dealing with a similar issue helps us understand each other better… I plan on helping you regardless and if I’m traveling with you then that makes a relationship so much easier.” I bit the inside of my lip as I force myself to sit back down and watch my hands in my lap. “You’re right but in the wrong way.. I am just a demon and a killer after all, chasing a goodie two shoe paladin.” I tried to smirk but I hid behind my hair.
Malachi looked submissive and his ears hung low as he looked back to the horizon. “I don’t care about your past and your ongoing battles… If you think that’s why I’m conflicted then you’re missing the point…” He said softly. “It’s not just because I travel a lot, it’s because I gave up a normal life to dive headfirst into really unpleasant areas in the world. It’s emotionally and physically draining and dragging someone through that isn’t fair.” He tried to explain. Despite me being the adventurous badass that didn’t feel like I needed protection, he clearly cared a lot about my wellbeing.
“You’re not dragging me through anything. I am willing to go. I am going to go, which I’ve made abundantly clear, I’m not going anywhere. I don’t want a normal, boring life. If I can be there to even help relieve some of that for you then it’ll be worth it.” I said soft yet determined. “If you don’t care about the blood on my hands or anything and I’ve already declared that I’m going with you no matter what, then what’s the issue? Cuz those aren’t.” I said trying not to snap out of frustration.
Malachi was quiet as he had a difficult time looking at me. His tail left my ankle, making it feel cold in its absents, and wrapped around the branch once more. He looked like he might be getting ready to leave. “Maybe cause I’m not ready. Maybe because I’m still coping over the death of those who were practically family. It’s been easier being alone.” He said. “I don’t want someone risking their life for me again…” He sat up.
“That’s all you needed to say.” I said but my voice wouldn’t get very loud. “Has it really been easier..? You were so—lonely… I already saw a change. I’m gonna be risking my life right along with you. Not for you. Equality and all that.” I flitted my wrist weakly. “Are you going to send me away? Leave?” I asked.
Malachi went quiet again but finally looked at me. “I promised that I would help you get rid of Zagasihr. I’m not leaving you or sending you away… I … I just need a minute to collect my thoughts.” He said softly. He was very overwhelmed and not emotionally in the best place. He was being so open with me though and it showed how unhealthy his mindset was.
“I meant right now.” I said and turned to meet his eyes. “I wouldn’t let you leave me out of an adventure.” I said with a little smirk. “Talk to me about it. Being alone isn’t the best. Talking out loud will help you understand your thoughts easier.” I said gently as I analyzed him. “You know you won’t change my perspective on paladins. My uncle is one. Everyone is unique which means everyone does things differently… I just want you—to be okay. And not to think you have to make certain sacrifices because of an oath…”
“A paladin is suppose to be a beacon of hope. Right now I feel I’m a broken mess that can’t accomplish that… I want to come back to my senses.” He acted like being open would earn him betrayal. And his unhealthy mindset had him thinking he needed to put his responsibilities and oath over his emotional well-being.
“You can’t be a beacon of hope if you yourself are hopeless.” I said gently. “Please stay. Rest. Talk. This is a safe place. Get it all off your chest, you’ll feel better. You have to take care of yourself to take care of others…”
“I—I know, but I’m not hopeless… I’m just trying to clear my head. It’s difficult being joyful right now.” Malachi said as his head hung and he covered his eyes with his hands. “Things just hurt right now. I came here for help from my master… I need his advice on what to do.” He said. “He was right when I left for war. I wasn’t ready but I’m trying to do right.” I can tell the civil war did a number on him. He’s so young.
I slowly massaged his back, “It’s okay to not be joyful and to hurt. This is life. Especially in wars. And it’s never a good feeling to lose people you’re close with. I’ve lost family as well…” He said gently. “What do you think you need to do? For yourself. To heal.” I asked. “I know you want to ask uncle, but without that—you. Just you. What do you feel you need?”
“I’m sorry to hear that…” He said as he raised his head, commenting on my lost family. “I’m sorry for your loss.” He went quiet again as he meditated on what I said. “What I need…” He thought out loud. “I don’t know… I just need time, rest—prayer possibly.”
“It’s alright.” I shrugged. “It’s difficult to form connections with people… maybe it’ll hit me once my thoughts aren’t influenced.” I said softly. It was an odd feeling, as if my grief was fogged by Zagasihr’s influence. He didn’t want to deal with my stronger emotions. “We can rest and there’s a celestial inside who I’m sure will help you with connecting to the gods.” I said rubbing his back. “I think—I think that another form of healing that comes with time is forgiveness.”
“Such a curse you deal with… I’m sorry that such an evil entity controls you like that.” He said. “Thanks again… Sorry I brought the mood down, things just hurt right now.”
I didn’t really comment on the demon thing. “You don’t have to apologize. The whole point was for you to get everything off your chest. It’s okay to be hurting after such a traumatic thing.”
“I appreciate you listening… I don’t think I’ve ever opened up like that before…” Malachi said. “It feels pretty good…”
“I’m glad I was able to help.” I smiled. “I can listen anytime you feel you need to talk. It’s healthy to be able to express what’s on your mind.”
“Thank you. I’m always head to listen too if you have any weight on your chest.” He said, smiling back. He closed his eyes for a moment and took a deep breath of the incoming wind. His sunbathing seemed to help him relax a bit too.
“Thank you. It might be difficult on certain topics.” I said, taping my head for a second. “But I’ll come to you. I haven’t talked with anyone about this since Therona.” I said running a hand through my hair. “You sure act like a cat you know.” I teased.
“You’re welcome… I’m guessing it’s been awhile since you last spoke to Therona?” He asked. He seemed to recognize the name a bit but suddenly looked pouty. “What makes you say that?” I think I struck a nerve.
“It’s been around forty or fifty years.” I said softly before unable to stop myself from snickering. “Oh you know. Just everything about you. From your tail to your ears.” I shrugged with a smirk.
“Well I’m not a feline. Small cats are cruel and evil. They’re like furry imps wanting blood.” He said but he even looked like a grumpy cat.
I snorted a laugh, “Whatever you say cutie.” I giggled as he kept proving my point further.
He playfully stared at me while his tail swung side to side. “I don’t think you take me seriously about this, do you?” He asked.
“No. No I do not.” I grinned at him, how can I when I know who his dad is? “It’s alright though. I love cats. They’re adorable.” I snickered more.
“Well I’m sorry to disappoint, but I’m not a cat.” He said. “I just behave differently because I’m a tiefling.” He crossed his arms. It’s amusing how much this upset him.
I looked like there was some inside joke he wasn’t getting as there was laughter in my eyes. “You’re not disappointing me. But I’ve never seen another tiefling act like you.” There was nothing he could say to convince me otherwise.
“What? Really..?” Malachi asked. He’s probably rarely come across another tiefling before. “What’s so funny?”
“Yeah. We talked about her once. Asua. At first I thought the difference was that she was more laid back than you but that’s not the case. You’re much more cat like. And my mentor, Zaiza, also doesn’t act very cat like.” I shrugged but continued to smirk at him. I tapped a finger to his nose without answering his last question.
“Oh right… Well I wouldn’t say I act cat-like. I’ve seen cats and I definitely don’t act like one.” He scratched behind his ear for a second.
“Yeah. Sure you don’t.” I said rolling my eyes. “I’ve been around cats too—I strongly beg to differ.”
“How do I act like a cat?” He asked getting louder. So grumpy.
I laughed more of my rare musical laugh, little tears coming to the corners of my eyes, “For on—your ears.” I said trying to breathe as I touched one of his ears and almost fell out of the tree again.
He couldn’t help but smile as I laughed. He grabbed my hand though as his ear flickered with my touch. “What’s wrong with my ears?” He asked now more playfully grumpy.
My heart fluttered as he held onto my hand, “Nothing is wrong with your ears! You just asked a question and I was giving you an answer!”
“Well I don’t think they’re cat-like and saying they are is almost like a fault.” He said being all dramatic. He finally let go of my hand as he blushed, realizing what he was doing.
“It isn’t a fault. It’s cute. You’re just being over dramatic.” I said sticking my tongue out. “Aw you let go!” I teased.
“I was trying to stop you from touching my ears.” He said as he rolled his eyes, making excuses as he snickered. “I’m not being dramatic! I’m just trying to prove I’m not a cat!”
“Bull!” I snickered. “It’s not gonna work! You can’t change my mind!” I finally slipped off the branch due to laughing so hard and gave a short yelp as I fell, this didn’t stop my laughter though.
Malachi’s quick reaction had him twisting himself on the branch and his tail wrapped around my waist, his claws digging into the bark as he held on tight. The back door burst open and my uncle stepped out, “Is everything alright? I thought I heard a yelp—” He looked up and heard our laughter, “Are you two alright?” He asked now chuckling.
As I dangled there I waved at Caderyn, “We’re fine! Probably!” I called and looked up at Malachi, “Are we fine?” I asked.
“Yeah. We’re fine.” He said with a laugh as his tail tightened around me. He takes a few deep breaths before trying to lift me back up onto the branch. We were too high up for him to safely drop me. Caderyn sighed and shook his head and soon Z was poking her head out the door, “What’s going on?” She asked as she looked up, “What the hell guys. Why you falling out of trees like clueless lovebirds?” I don’t know where she got the lovebird part but alright I guess.
I grabbed for the branch once I was lifted close enough and helped to push myself onto it. In the process I fall into Malachi and my face was now shoved into his chest. Nexxis pops her head out the door as well, watching curiously and I couldn’t respond right away. I did mentally reassure Nexxis that I was alright though.
“Don’t think I don’t know what you’re doing up there!” Zelaphor exclaims as Caderyn tried to have her be a little quieter. Nexxis folded her ears back as the sprite shouted.
Malachi was really blushed now as he looked down at me, unsure what to do. “Are uh, you okay Lia?” He asked as his tail released from my waist.
I lifted my face a bit, also very blushed, and looked at him adorably with a slightly open mouth. “Y-Yeah. I’m okay.” I said to him before trying to shake it off and sat up to stick my tongue out at Z.
Malachi lifted himself up too, “Should we uh- climb down? I think Caderyn probably wants to talk to us more.” He said awkwardly. Zelaphor flipped me the bird.
“Can you climb down kitty cat?” I asked with a tease as I gracefully jumped down the branches like a dancer. “Race ya!” I called.
“Of course I can climb down—just might take a second.” He mumbled as he watched me. Malachi eventually sighed and grabbed the base of the trunk with his claws to hold his bodyweight as he calculated how to get down. He really was a cat.
I swing on a branch a couple feet off the ground before launching myself into a forward flip and landing gracefully, putting on a little show. I looked back up and couldn’t hold in the burst of laughter, “Cat stuck in a tree? And you’re trying to convince me that you aren’t one?” teasing joy danced in my eyes.
“I’m not suck.” Malachi said as he continued to look down.
Caderyn shook his head, “He is stuck. He’s very good at climbing up, but the number of times I’ve had to help him is ridiculous.”
Malachi pouted before hugging tight on the tree. Suddenly his skin became bark and he merged into the tree, disappearing. After a quick few seconds Malachi stepped forth from the bottom of the tree, walking through like a ghost. His skin and clothes turned back to normal and he brushed himself off.
“Show off.” Zelaphor teases. How the hell was that showing off? I did a flip. He casted a spell. Huge difference. I tried to brush it off.
I put my hand on my hip and smirked at Malachi, “You have to rely on a spell to get down?” I teased. “Adorable.” I snickered.
Pathetic. Zagasihr commented.
“How have you helped him?” I asked my uncle.
“It’s safter than jumping down.” He said crossing his arms but was clearly embarrassed. He was just trying to make excuses at this point. He finally started to wonder off.
“I’ve had to help him all the time all the way back to when he was just ten. He had a habit of climbing up trees when he was excited, angry, or stressed. He liked to be off the ground—which resulted in sad little tears until I assisted him down. He always like to find the tallest tree.” Caderyn said with a soft chuckle. That didn’t answer my question of how but whatever.
I shook my head while rolling my eyes but grabbed Malachi’s writs, “Where do you think you’re going? We literally came down here because you said uncle Caderyn probably wanted to talk more with us.”
“Well that was before the change in conversation.” Malachi mumbled. Well that’s mildly annoying.
“I’m sorry my son. We won’t tease you so much. Is there something on your mind that you wish to speak?” Caderyn asked and Malachi nodded. Speak for yourself Uncle.
I rolled my eyes again, “Yeah. Okay.” I mumbled.
Caderyn gave Malachi a pat on the shoulder, gesturing him back inside. Caderyn gave me an apologetic smile as he must know Malachi was a handful sometimes. Once back inside, Zelaphor had baked adorable cookies that I had taught her to make many years ago. The house smelled so good from the aroma.
“Sorry if they don’t taste the greatest.” Z said, “Caderyn had limited supplies so I tried being creative.”
“You remembered.” I said as I felt touched as I saw the cookies. “I’m sure they’ll taste fine.” I said waving a hand as I took a cookie and just reminisced as I looked it over. “Definitely need to head into town before I make dinner. Want to make sure we have enough.” I said absently.
“Course I do! It was forever ago but I remember that recipe. Wasn’t it your mother’s or am I thinking about something else?” Zelpahor asked curiously. Malachi softly thanked the sprite and reached for one and my uncle had one in his hand along with his tea.
“Most of my recipes are my mother’s… This was one of my favorites. I didn’t get to know my mother’s cooking very well though. I just ran off with her recipe book. The sickness kept her from the kitchen most days, especially toward the end.” I said softly, lost in thought. My memories of my mother were faint but I held them dearly.
“Adryll was a wonderful cook. You definitely took after your mother Lia.” Caderyn say with a warm yet somber smile. Malachi had his hand on my back, sensing this topic was sensitive to me.
I smiled a little at my uncle before looking at the cookie again, little tears in my eyes. My mother was a difficult topic for me, I felt like it was my fault I did. I killed her. “I-I miss her.” I said barely audible as I tried to keep it together, turning the cookie around in my hand.
Caderyn walked over and sat beside me on the couch, wrapping his arms around me with one of his hands on the back of my head. “I miss her too. My sister was very special to me… but I hope you know that what happened to her wasn’t your fault. Your mother now watches over us from the heavens at peace.”
Malachi continued to sit close to me but let my uncle and I have our moment, “I’m sorry for your loss Lia…” He said with a heavy heart.
My eyes remained open as I leaned into my uncle’s chest. “It was my fault though. I killed her. Her blood is on my hands.” I started hyperventilating.
“No, Zagasihr killed her. A blood hungry, monstrous demon.” Caderyn said, “You were a young child who demon lord was easily able to control. None of it was your fault.”
Zelaphor looked heartbroken as she stood by the kitchen. “No good comes from demons… they’re evil creatures that only hurt and destroy…” Malachi said softly as he watched his hands.
“It started before that. I wasn’t born with him… My father said that I was a parasite. My mom was perfectly healthy until I was born.” I said and my voice broke. I peaked over at Malachi, “You’re good that came from demons.” I said softly.
“Your father was wrong.” Caderyn said disgusted with my father. “I looked over your mother and her health. What she carried was an illness passed on through our family line, a curse. You my dear, are not a parasite. Your mother’s health was slowly depleting long before you were born.” Malachi kept quiet as he looked over at me.
Nexxis hopped onto Malachi’s lap as he leaned her head into me. “My father put Zagasihr in me so he could save my mom. He sacrificed me. My own father and then proceeded to hurt me… I didn’t understand until I was older and then thought I deserved it.” I finally started crying.
“You didn’t deserve any of it… What your father did was wrong. Relying on the power of demons was his greatest mistake.” Caderyn said. “None of what happened was your fault my dear… no matter what Zagasihr or anyone else says.”
I sniffled, “Thank you uncle. I’ve been living with guilt for so long. Maybe I can move past it.” I said softly. “I don’t mean to be a cry baby.. it’s just—difficult.” I said softly before a thought occurred to me. “H-Has my father tried to look for me here?” I asked worried as I pulled back to look up at Caderyn.
“You are more than welcome to cry. You’ve gone through a lot of emotional and physical heartache.” Caderyn said as he looked back down at me. “Your father did appear once, but he and I never saw eye to eye. He asked about you but I informed him I had no knowledge to help him. He never did like me.” My uncle said. “So not to worry. Your father doesn’t know you’re here.”
“I’m sorry to hear about your father… He sounds terrible…” Malachi said sympathetically.
“D-do you think he’ll try to use my brother to find me?” I asked. “He is horrible. My big brother said he wasn’t so bad until our mom started getting more and more sick. Then he became obsessed with trying to heal her and it drove him to madness.”
“He may try, but I have faith in Togira. He’s working alongside some—interesting people, but he is a cleric now.” Caderyn said. “Your brother loves and cares for you. I’m sure he wouldn’t help your father…”
“You have a brother? Wait—Togira? Oh no…” Malachi mumbled as Zelaphor snorted a laugh. He must know my brother. “I’m sorry… I wish you could have a loving and caring father…” The young paladin said feeling bad for me.
“I’ll have to seek him out. I have missed him” I said but a little fact or two caught me by surprise. “Togira? That’s his name now? It suits him. But—You know him? He’s been around?” I asked looking between the two men. “It’s alright. The last time I saw my father I was six or seven years old. I don’t need him, I have uncle Caderyn.” I smiled at Malachi.
“Yes, his adult name is Togira. I think it fits him as well.” Caderyn said. “I’m sure he’ll be very happy to see you as well. I believe he’s in the city of Azmar last I heard.”
Malachi sighed. “Yeah, I know him…. He would come over often when I was younger. He liked teasing me and pulling on my tail.”
“And then ya bit him! Twice!” Zelaphor chimed in.
“I can’t believe he’s a cleric. I didn’t think he was the type.” I snickered. “He would pull your tail? And you bit him!?” I asked shocked though.
“When your brother found out I adopted Malachi, he would come over often. He would ask about you and we would have a nice chat, but the fool enjoyed upsetting Malachi.” Caderyn said as he lifted his hand to show off nasty bite scars that looked like they were from a small animal. “Malachi had a bad habit of biting when he was upset and pushed into a corner.”
Malachi blushed and crossed his arms. “I haven’t bitten anymore in a long time… Plus getting my tail pulled hurts…”
I looked over Caderyn’s hand before suddenly turning and tackling Malachi against the couch, forcing him to lay down while I laid on top of him and pushed his lips up so I could see his fangs. How can he possibly defend against being a cat when he bites people? His fangs were much longer than normal tiefling’s and even his molars and such were jagged. “Why haven’t you bitten anymore in a while? These could do so much damage! Then again, people are very unhygienic which is nasty so I guess I can understand.” I rambled, distracted for now.
Malachi was shocked by my sudden actions and with my fingers in his mouth, “Cause I have weapons and magic—I don’t need to bite. I’m not a child.” Malachi said around me playing with his lips. “And why do you care so much on what’s in my mouth?”
Caderyn chuckled.
“Biting ain’t just for children. I’ve bit plenty of people.” I said rolling my eyes but my heart started pounding as I realized I was on top of him. I finally pulled my fingers from his mouth and humorously wiped them on his shirt before shrugging, “Curiosity.”
“He’s got a rough sandpaper tongue too.” Caderyn teased. Holy shit definitely a cat.
“He does!?” I asked as I popped Malachi’s mouth back open and rub a finger on his tongue.
Zelaphor finally walked over and tried to wave me off. “Okay. Okay. You saw his fangs now get off him.” He said pointing to an open spot on the couch. Malachi was blushed and unsure how to react.
I wiped my finger on his shirt again, I shivered before looking up at Z, my smile fading for a moment as I looked at her unamused. “Just cuz that comment, I think I’ll stay.” I said laying my head on his chest and smirking up at Z.
Malachi was making funny expressions after I removed my finger from his mouth, “Could you please ask before sticking your hand in my mouth?” He asked before turning even more pink.
“You’d probably tell me no.” I shrugged.
Zelaphor looked furious as she stepped around the couch, “Don’t be giving me that smug look. You don’t need to be laying all over him.” She said tapping her foot.
“No fighting children.” Caderyn said casually as he moved back to his chair.
I didn’t move aside from following Z with my head, “And you don’t need to be a jealous bitch but you don’t see me going around making a scene about it.” I smirked. “This- is comfortable.” I paused for emphasis. “Of course uncle.”
“I ain’t being a jealous bitch!” Zelaphor exclaims. “I’m just makin’ sure you don’t get to cozy and inappropriate.” She was fuming.
“Language please…” Caderyn said as he sipped his tea.
Malachi looked between myself and Z but mostly looked at me. Feeling my placement on my chest along with my legs and hands, it made him feel awkward and warm. He was speechless and off in his own world.
“I can get cozy. I don’t see the issue. I’m just laying here.” I said as my heart fluttered.
“Seems like you’re getting to touchy… Like puttin’ your fingers in his mouth.” Zelaphor says still full of attitude.
“I’m uh—okay Z. She just wanted to see my fangs.” Malachi said as Z glared at him. His heart was beating heavy in his chest while his tail swayed anxiously.
I was smug with his comment, “Why do you care how touchy I am if you ain’t jealous?” I asked.
“Cause you’re being inappropriate.” Zelaphor mumbled since she had no argument. “You should really ask before shoving yourself on him like you are.” She seemed to have given up as she started to slowly walk off.
I ignored the sprite. I popped my chin up on Malachi’s chest though and gave him my cutest pouty face. “Are you upset with my actions?” I asked, I know it would be difficult for him to be mad or to resist if he looked at me.
“N-No… I just don’t really know how to react.” Malachi said as he looked so clueless.
“That’s okay. Do whatever feels natural or comfortable. And if that’s being awkward like this, that’s fine too.” I giggled happily. I laid my head down for a moment and muttered into his chest about how comfortable I was laying like that. “Maybe we can try reverse next time, you lay on me to make it even.” I laughed raising my head up again.
“I may not look big, but I think I’d crush you if I tried to lay on top of you.” Malachi said with an adorably awkward laugh. While I listened to his heart I could hear something else, like a second heart. It was softer though and almost gave off this static sound. Zagasihr whispered it was Malachi’s core. Interesting.
“I think I’d be just fine.” I giggled but then I remembered dinner and I shot up. “Fuck! I still gotta run into town so we have enough food for dinner!” I said, I didn’t realize I was sitting on Malachi inappropriately at first.
“Language my dear.” Caderyn said to him as he put his reading glasses on and started looking into Therona’s book. Malachi blushed again and after looking over the situation, laid his head back down and covered his eyes with his arm. His shirt lifted up to reveal a bit of his stomach.
“Listen uncle. I’ve been with pirates for forty plus years… It’s gonna be a bit before I ain’t cursing so much.” I sighed. I blushed as I looked back down at Malachi and put my hand on his bare skin. “So—Will you come to town with me?” I asked.
“Don’t give your uncle too much attitude my dear.” Caderyn said playfully as he flipped through the pages.
Malachi nodded his head, agreeing to go, but struggled to speak as he felt my hands. I think I broke him again.
“I’m sorry uncle Caderyn.” I said with a short sigh. I reluctantly got off of Malachi and offered him a hand. He pulled his shirt down as he reached for my hand and thanked me. He scratched behind his right ear before shaking his head, then reached down to get his boots ready.
“Don’t spend too much money on me. Just pick up enough for dinner and breakfast.” Caderyn said. “I can pay back what you spend.”
I waved a hand at my uncle, “I promise I have plenty of coin. Don’t even think about paying me back.” I said as I held onto Malachi’s hand a little longer than needed. “I might pick up extra food so that you have something to eat while we’re away.”
“You don’t have to do that. Hugel isn’t far. I can simply do my own shopping. And why wouldn’t I pay back my own niece?” Caderyn said. “Now don’t be gone long you two or I’ll track you down myself.”
Malachi chuckled, “We’ll be back soon Master.”
“Good. You and I still need to have our chat.” Caderyn said pointing at Malachi.
“Because you’re niece has a lot of coin.” I snickered. “I’ve been gone for a long time uncle. Just—let me do this please?” I practically begged as I grabbed Malachi’s hand. “Nexxis will help you track us down if the need arises and you two can talk while I get the food started.” I said as I started pulling Malachi out the door.
“Alright—Just be safe. Not that you should find much trouble in Hugel.” Caderyn said.
“We won’t be gone long.” Malachi said waving goodbye.
“We’ll be safe. I don’t plan on getting kidnapped again.” I said as we closed the door behind us.

Jack is a Vet Tech at the local clinic up in the Montana Mountains. When the Vet is on a call and two abnormally gigantic wolves show up at her clinic, Jack must take the lead and help them before it's too late. With the help of her best friend Micah and her pet baby raccoon named Critter, her life gets better. But of course it gets ruined when her cheating ex-boyfriend wants her back. ------------------------------------------------River is the alpha of the Black Moon Pack up in the mountains. He and his beta were on patrol when they were ambushed by a giant group of rogues. Lucky for them they made it to a running path. When two runners spot the bleeding wolves, they call the local clinic that Jack works at. When River sees Jack for the first time, time freezes. He knows right then and there that Jack is his mate. And he'll do anything to get her. Even if it means showing up in his wolf form in her backyard every night.Ya. So copying this story will not be tolerated.
