《Breath of Life | LoZBoTW》Guilt

After riding for a while in silence, the night began to fall again. Apparently, retrieving the Master Sword had taken longer than they thought. Link was in no shape after pulling so hard on the sword and cutting it very close to head to the castle today. He hurried Epona in the direction of Hateno Village, to Emery's surprise. She figured Link would want to save his lovely princess as soon as possible.
He still hadn't said anything to her, so she continued to give him the silent treatment. He didn't even want to tamper with her right now, because at any second her rage could unfold onto him. He didn't want that, as she could be pretty scary sometimes. They arrived at the house, putting Epona in a stable to get some sleep. Emery raced to the shower before he could get there. He let out an annoyed sigh as she slammed the door shut after her. Which was closely followed by the sound of the door locking.
She tore off her armor and stepped into the warm, comforting shower. It was close to the comfort Link gave her, but not the same. All she wanted was for this to be over, so she could go back to her normal life. Saving people, hunting things- (lol I'm just kidding) she just wanted to go back to her regular routine. And not be bothered with seeing Link again. She never knew what it felt like to be in love until she met him. Still, it sucked unlike the stories she read about it because they don't tell you how to deal with it when the person doesn't love you back. Everything would be so much better off when Link was with his princess, and she was off on her own again. For now, she knew she had a duty to fulfill. Even if it wasn't that important. She still felt obliged to do everything she could, and the only way she was going to help people was by assisting Link; Since his aim sucks, and all.
She stared at her reflection after her shower. She brushed through her hair, one she left permanently at the house. It would be moved after too long. They'd be going to fight Ganon any day now. They had everything they needed, or so she thought.
She frowned slightly at herself when her appearance wasn't exactly what she wanted. She had finally bought some nicer pajamas, seeing as she had someone to present herself to now. It was as nice as pajamas got. A soft t-shirt with silk shorts to match. They were nice and ultra comfortable. Both of which guaranteed for a good nights sleep. Still, she was just so ashamed of herself. Soon, she'd feel better. Soon, she'd avenge her families deaths. At least- hopefully she would.
As she stepped out of the bathroom, Link went in right after her. She was still irritated by him. Even if she just seemed salty, his words had really hurt her. All she wanted was to be something in this battle, and he wasn't helping her feel that way. If anything, he was rubbing it directly into her face that he was something. Like she didn't already know that. She'd had the pleasure- not so much- of hearing about him as she grew up. Wishing she could fulfill his task, him being dead and all, she trained her heart out. Everyday she would go back to Impa and Paya, exhausted. She'd have newly formed bruises and occasional cuts everyday. Her main focus, though, was the bow. She was good was a sword, but her true passion was found when wielding a bow. Seemingly, that made Impa happy but she never told Emery she was proud of her. Emery always saw her as a parent sort of figure since she was the one who took her in, but that only lead her to disappointment. Impa only saw her as a child who lost her parents whom she must fulfill a courageous duty and protect at all costs. Due to her being naturally good, and all.

Still, every day she worked harder and harder. Once she got older, she got real lessons of battle from someone who could really teach her. Someone from the royal guard whom had seemingly survived the battle. He was a Hylian, and he was the only person who respected Emery to this day. She wondered why, and she was devastated when he finally met his demise. Apparently he had been suffering all these years, but no one would've ever known. After loosing her parents and him, she didn't know how much more she could take.
Nonetheless, she continued on in her life and put her skills to good use. Everyday she would go to a different region of town, performing any tasks she could. She knew it would be instant suicide if she went in to fight Calamity Ganon, even if that was all she wanted to do. Impa made her promise to never do that, to which she agreed. That seemed like that was the only time Impa made a point to express that she cared about Emery. It wasn't that Impa was a bad person, it was just that she would never be able to return what Emery truly needed.
She was brought out of her thoughts when Link stepped out of the bathroom. She stared him down, seeing his shirtless body and comfortable pants as the water from his hair dripped down him. She quickly looked away, a frown still sat upon her face. He sighed; "Will you please tell me what I did?"
"Why don't you know?" She retorted, still not looking over at him. It was obvious to him that she was hurt by whatever he'd said, as her voice cracked. She cursed herself for showing a sign of weakness. He pursed his lips as he continued drying his hair. Once he was done, he walked over to her place on the couch. She quickly shot him a look that told him not to do it. It was best for him, as she feared she would say some words she didn't mean also.
He went upstairs, and before long it got late. He was reading, but he would always get distracted by his sword that leaned up against the wall. It was beautiful, he just wished he could hear it's words. That meant Zelda must still hear them, and she would be assured to know it's awake and with it's master. He let out a small sigh as he directed his attention to the living room. He no longer heard the tapping of Emery's foot, which she did quite often. He never knew why, and he never asked. Either way, he went down to inspect it. She laid, snuggled into the couch. Nothing covered her. He shook his head to himself. He grabbed went to grab her, but she shot up. "What do you think you're doing?"
"Bringing you to bed." He replied innocently. She almost couldn't stay mad at his face. Almost.
"I'm trying to go to bed, if you'd be kind enough to leave me alone." She let out a long, agitated sigh. If he still didn't know what he said, there was no hope in even trying with him anymore. It was obvious what he thought of her.

"You don't sleep on a couch." He now looked equally as agitated as her.
"Yes I do." She retorted. Now he had to resort to this... He grabbed her all at once, throwing her over his back. He began to carry her upstairs. She started to yell. "Link! Link! You put me down this instant!"
"No can do." He replied, plopping her down onto the bed. Her icy looks scared him for a second, but he knew he couldn't look cowardice. He had to be persistent, or she wouldn't know he was serious. "Tell me why you're upset with me."
"No." She stated firmly. "If you don't know, then there's no sense in trying."
"Yes there is, Emery. We have to be together. We share the Triforce, and if we're not together or cooperating we're not as powerful. We need to be in good shape when we go to fight Ganon." He tried to reason with her.
"Then you better be figuring out what you've done." She groaned, beginning to climb out of bed. A strong hand placed her back down. She knew he was serious now.
"Talk to me about this, Emery. I know I really hurt your feelings. Tell me what I said so I can fix it." He begged of her. Her crossed arms fell from her chest as she sat next to him.
"You said you wouldn't expect me to know what it's like to hear a voice from the sword or to know anything about it. Because I'm not a real hero, I'm not a Champion-" He shushed her to keep her from rambling.
"I'm sorry, I realize now how that sounded, and it's not what I meant." He frowned.
"Then what could it have possibly meant?" She asked.
"I just meant I didn't want you to feel bad if you didn't get it, because you are a Champion, and you are a hero. Isn't having a piece of the Triforce enough proof of that?" He tilted his head slightly to the side as he looked at her. She looked down at her hands.
"That just wasn't how it sounded." She muttered, realizing she'd been overreacting this whole time.
"Oh, I know. I'm sorry it came off that way. I didn't realize how incredibly rude it did sound. Forgive me?" He asked. She looked him in the eyes and nodded. He gave a small smile that said thank you. He climbed into bed next to her, leaning against the headboard.
"Aren't you tired?" She asked.
"I couldn't sleep, I was bothered by the fact that you were upset with me. I didn't want you to be." He replied. She nodded, letting him know she heard him. Why was he being so incredulously sweet to her right now? After she'd been nothing but a brat to him?
"Well, I'm sorry too." She said. He gave her another smile, which she knew meant he was thankful for her gesture. She laid down, turning her back from him. He frowned as he blew the candle out. As soon as he got comfortable in bed, she wrapped her arms around him, laying her head on his chest. He was taken back at first, but nonetheless wrapped his arm around her too. "How did you know you were able to pull the Master Sword today?"
"I didn't." He replied.
"Link-"
"I trusted it." He stopped her before she could start a lecture.
"How?" She asked.
"Because, I knew that sword. It had to let me pull it, it just had to. I put my trust and my faith into it." He explained.
"So, what about your memories? How close are you to having most of them back?" She then asked. She was curious, and she hoped he'd share with her. After all, he was right. They were going to be together, so they may as well be close.
"Uh..." He mumbled. "I can remember up to everything, but I don't remember the return of Calamity Ganon, though my memories don't reveal how close I am to the return of Ganon. Although, in my heart, I feel it's close. I believe I have a couple of places left to go, and then Impa wants me to report back to her."
"We shouldn't go to Hyrule Castle to fight Calamity Ganon until you've uncovered all the memories you can." She replied. He nodded. "Let's do that tomorrow."
"Okay." He said. She was silent, and before long he heard her soft snores. He pulled the cover further over her cold body, and then proceeded to get lost in his thoughts.
He felt guilty about what he was planning, but he couldn't risk seeing her in such great danger like he did the precious night. It truly scared him to death seeing her on the verge of imminent death and absolutely nothing scared him. It was on his watch too, he hadn't even noticed someone took her. He couldn't let something like that happen again, so that was why this was better for her.

Cinder Roots (Undergoing a Rewrite)
This novel is currently undergoing a major rewrite, as I noticed several plot points that needed to be revamped. I'll leave the chapters I've posted here to anyone curious to see how everything started, but I'll be posting the rewritten story as a new novel in the future. The characters will be the same, but the journey will be more understandable and hopefully, a lot more fun to read. -------- First, everything was fire, it killed, it consumed, and it gave him life. He was just a tree, born in the biggest forest that remained in the world, full of dryads, naiads, elves and treants, but he was alone. He couldn’t see. He couldn’t talk. Curiosity plagued him. He dreamed of wandering the land, but could only wonder what stood outside the reach of his roots. The tree was tired of waiting. He decided to not just dream, but to act. How could he survive against a invading empire, a grand conspiracy that threatened to shake the foundations of the world, and the raw danger that lies within these woods? With pure determination. Warning - There are quite a few POV changes in the first chapters, but that'll change after the introduction is done, as I'll be focusing on the MC perspective only.
