《Devil May Love | Niklaus Mikaelson》Chapter Twelve: Do You Think I'll Die?

Guess who's back, back, back? Back again, 'gain, 'gain....
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
is going on?!" boomed Klaus as he barged into Gloria's early in the morning pointing to his now perfectly healed back.
Being the only partial human, I was in tow probably looking like a zombie since it was still the crack of dawn. Rebekah was pissed at Klaus for making us stop at Gloria's before taking her to get clothes and Stefan looked uneasy about being there. I wanted to ask him why but he was basically avoiding me.
For example, I went to talk to him this morning while Klaus and Rebekah went feeding but he literally disappeared from the hotel, he didn't show up until Klaus and Rebekah were back. It's been pretty irritating if I'm being honest. If he was mad that he had to be with us instead of Mystic Falls, I didn't force him to make a deal with Klaus. Sure he did it because the hybrid was strangling me to death but for God's sake I would've come back! Did he forget I was still part vampire or what?
Anyway, after I pointed it out to Klaus that neither of us had healed, he went insane. Not mentally but he would've done a tornado part two if the three of us hadn't stopped him. Rebekah bitch slapped him and it was the funniest thing to see his reaction but then he daggered her again so, yeah.
Stef and I took the dagger out though, after I attempted to give Klaus a good talking to about stabbing his siblings because he was angry. It went in one ear and out the other but hey, at least I didn't get stabbed. Joking...kind of.
Anyway, Klaus ended up kicking Rebekah and Stefan out then going to bed but he didn't sleep. He just kept tossing and turning and grumbling to himself and because of that, I didn't get any sleep. By the time three AM came around, I was practically ready to attempt to set him on fire, intentionally that time.
3 AM Last Night
For what felt like the millionth time, Nik shifted around in the bed, stealing more than half of the covers, and mumbling to himself. He has been doing this since we got into bed at opposite ends hours ago and I am probably going to commit a crime if he continues.
Lightly, I kicked his back, in attempt for him to stop but all that he did was shift again and growl at me.
Internally groaning, I sat up and glared at him through the dark atmosphere of the room.
"Could you stop?" I hissed smacking his leg to emphasize my irritation.
The hybrid turned over onto his back and looked up at me with eyes so blue I could see their color in the darkness, "Stop what?"
"The shifting and the tossing and the turning and the annoying of Evangeline!" I exclaimed haphazardly and speaking in third person, again, to emphasize my annoyance with the blonde.
I could spot his death glare even through a room without an ounce of light, "Excuse me for not being able to get past the fact that I'm not healing, Dear Angel. I'm not sure if you're aware but we supernatural beings don't get bruises!"
"You don't have to yell, I'm right here asshole" I snapped childishly, "And you're not the only one freaking out here! Plus, don't act like you're actually hurting right now, Nik! You're practically invincible and you have literally carried me while I was almost on fire! Just be glad your bruises aren't around your freaking neck!"
Advertisement
He went silent and finally still after my rant. I was about to lay back down when a large amount of guilt washed over me. It wasn't mine of course because I didn't exactly feel bad for telling Nik what had been on my mind for the past few hours since I'd revealed to him that he hadn't healed.
On top of the guilt, I felt a pull towards Nik and the need to comfort him. It was just like hunger or anxiousness overcoming someone but instead it was the urgency to mentally care for the hybrid.
I'm sorry
Nik's voice filled my ears causing me to gasp because I knew he hadn't actually said the apology. Was this like when he heard me begging for him in my mind? No wonder he was so freaked out, it felt like he had been breathing down my neck while saying that. I probably had chills.
The urgent feeling got stronger and I found myself crawling towards his end of the bed.
"Nik..." I mumbled gingerly putting a hand on his arm as his back was towards me.
He didn't respond but he didn't pull away from my touch either, "It's okay to be scared..." No response, "I know you've spent over one thousand years being basically invincible so the fact that this random biracial Salvatore girl has ended up crashing into your life and changing things up is making you feel crazy" No response but he turned towards me looking directly into my eyes, "It's freaking me out too, Nik, believe me but we'll figure something out. We'll talk to the Original Witch about this whole mate thing and just...figure it out"
After a few moments of silence and (slightly awkward) staring, he spoke.
"I shouldn't feel this attached to you" Whispered Nik, taking my hand in his, "I'm afraid that even if I wanted to, I could never get rid of you Dear Angel. As soon as I saw you, something inside of me grew...attached and I hadn't even known your name yet. I needed to know your story...to figure out how you could possibly make me feel such a way. When you came to my apartment to help Damon, I never even considered bringing you along, I could've simply had you do something to my advantage in Mystic Falls, but something told me to so I did. To you, its obsession or addiction but for me...it's weakness, love"
He finally spoke the truth behind his reasoning and I had no idea how to register it. No words could describe the warm feeling I felt inside from the small speech nor could they explain the raw emotion that stirred up within me.
So, instead of speaking, I slipped back under the covers and took a risk, pulling him into my embrace. It wasn't the easiest task giving the height and size difference but it still felt...good.
Nik didn't stiffen nor hesitate; he almost instinctively pulled me into his chest and wrapped his arms around me. I nuzzled my face on his collarbone and he rested his chin on the crown of my head tangling our legs together. He was warm and comforting and something about his scent made me feel safe.
After that, the tossing and turning ended then we both fell asleep.
That morning, I woke up to Nik's eye nearly twitching as he left the en-suite bathroom and pointed out to me that the bruises were gone from his back and my neck. After that, he rounded up Stefan, Rebekah, and I and we all went to bombard Gloria with questions leading us to where we are now.
Stefan and Rebekah know nothing about the temporarily longer lasting bruises but they're about to I guess.
"It's your back" The witch deadpanned as she finished lighting the last candle on the small table she was standing in front of.
Klaus borderline growled at her, "No you—"
"Klaus!" I hissed pulling him a little ways away from the group before pulling him down to my level and murmuring into his ear, "You don't want to freak her out from helping you by threatening her life, so chill"
He pulled away and cocked an eyebrow but I just gave him a 'what?' look before walking back over to my brother and his sister.
"What the hell was that?" Stefan demanded pulling me away from Klaus who had walked back over as well, "What the hell is going on between the two of you?"
Before I could speak, Rebekah did, "Oh Stefan don't be an imbecile, obviously they're screwing each other"
My eyes widened immediately at her blunt statement while Stefan looked pissed, "Wha—no we're not we just—"
"Do you have the necklace?" Gloria interrupted seeming to be ready to get the whole thing done with.
Klaus sneered, "I'm afraid she lost it"
Rebekah shot daggers at her brother, "I didn't lose it, it's just been misplaced for the last ninety or so years"
I almost laughed at her logic but everyone else seemed unamused.
Gloria sighed in annoyance, rubbing her temples and looking at the ceiling, "Well I suggest you find it"
"Couldn't you?" I intercepted before I could stop myself, "You could do a locator spell on it"
Stefan gave me a look and I realized what I'd done.
'Sorry, I forgot' I mouthed to him and he just shook his head.
I really did forget Elena had it, I mean come on, I'd been a little distracted, that little fact was probably the last thing on my mind.
"I'd barely have anything to go on" Gloria informed with a doubtful look, "It would be a very long process because of that"
We all went silent, looking from one another, expecting another person to burst out with another idea.
That person was Rebekah, "Well just use me, I only wore it for a thousand years"
Sarcastic just like her brother, I thought to myself, chuckling a bit as the blonde Original climbed onto the table and put her hand in Gloria's.
Immediately, the witch began whispering foreign words with her eyes closed and the candles shifted a bit. I glanced over at my brother and saw he wore a clouded look in order to keep his worry hidden away from Klaus. Speaking of the blonde hybrid, he was staring intently at Gloria from his chair beside me. Think of a dog watching a piece of food they want and that is basically what it looked like.
I kind of wanted to try to speak to him with my mind again to freak him out but Klaus had a flare for dramatics so I decided against it.
Just as I went to get up and go towards my brother, Gloria's eyes snapped open and she announced that she found the necklace. My heart nearly fell out of my chest. She was probably going to spill everything. She was looking directly at Stefan so she must have felt the relationship between my brother and the supposed to be dead doppelganger.
"So where is it?" Rebekah asked impatiently from her spot on the table.
"It doesn't work like that, doll" Gloria said seeming unconvincing to me, "I get images, there's a girl with her friends—"
"Yes, a dead girl with her dead friends if I don't get my necklace back" Rebekah snapped, completely serious.
Now that I think about it, Elena never took the thing off...maybe Stefan gave it to her...
"Well I'll have to dive back in to get the details" Gloria responded as Klaus got up and walked over to the two leaving me to be the only one sitting down.
"So dive" Klaus said seeming carefree but he was wearing his 'I'm losing my patience' smile that I knew oh-so well.
"I need more time" Gloria said with a shrug as Klaus leaned over on the table beside her, "...And space...you're harshing my ju-ju"
Wow, was that an attempt to be hip?
Anyway, I walked over towards Klaus, slightly ready to test my fire skills on him if he started to go crazy. Plus, I seemed to be the only one who could tame him at the moment.
"We can wait" Klaus said, not wanting to spend anymore time as a sitting duck for what's to come.
Gloria looked at him in dismay, "I'm sure you can...but that's not what I asked"
Well, I guess I should neutralize this since Klaus looks about ready to strangle the woman.
"Hey" I said putting a hand on Klaus' back, stealing his attention, "Rebekah still needs clothes anyway"
"Finally, someone doesn't ignore me!" The blonde declared, hopping down from the table and shooting me a smile.
Stefan butted in, "And I'm hungry"
I rolled my eyes at my brother but Klaus seemed to agree so we all left Gloria to her thoughts. She obviously knew more than she was letting on but I figured I'd keep that observation to myself.
"You two go shop, Stefan and I will go eat" Klaus attempted to negotiate but Rebekah wasn't having it.
"No, I'm hungry too Nik and I want your opinions on these clothes" The blonde vampire whined causing our brothers to groan but sure enough, the four of us went to a boutique that served drinks for some reason.
Rebekah went through about fifty different outfits, commenting about how women these days dress like prostitutes. I couldn't exactly disagree on that and neither could Klaus.
"Stefan, how does this look?" She asked, wearing a short dress that was kind of mesh and didn't fit her well at all.
"I like it" Stefan said, completely disinterested and lying his ass off.
Apparently, Rebekah could tell because she scoffed and turned back towards the dressing room.
"What?" My brother asked
"I can always tell when you're lying Stefan" She deadpanned before disappearing back into the dressing room.
"Nice one, good work" Klaus said to Stefan sarcastically, raising his wine glass.
"You're the one who pulled the dagger out of her" My brother retorted bluntly.
This was definitely a side to him I didn't see when I first visited them.
"I heard that!" Rebekah called and I just shook my head before putting my glass of champagne down and walking towards the clothing racks myself.
I picked out a white tank top with metallic gold detailing on it and a pair of black respectable length shorts and a long gold chain necklace. Then I walked over to the dressing room and knocked on the wall.
"Try this" I suggested handing Rebekah the outfit.
She didn't protest and a few minutes later, she walked out with a pleased smile on her face.
"I like you" She retorted and I just chuckled before we were finally checking out.
Klaus grinned as we left the boutique, "Now, food"
"All you can eat" My brother said smugly as they looked from person to person and I just shook my head.
As much I was against Stefan going off the rail again and feeding on humans, there was nothing I could do. Sure he was my younger brother but what was I going to do, shove a bunny down his throat? It was his hole to dig and I could only be there for him when he needed to get out of it.
~*~*~*~*~
The four of us ended up back in the storage unit. Klaus, Rebekah, and my brother were draining random girls they found on the street but I on the other hand, got Chinese because I hadn't actually craved blood in almost a month. With only a third of me being a vampire, I was fine feeding only occasionally if I actually craved or needed it, other than that I could eat whatever I liked.
"My girl's dead and I'm bored
Rebekah's girl died a little while ago after she drained all of her blood but my brother and Klaus were still feeding. They went through like five people each, it was gross and messy.
"You weren't kidding when you said you were hungry" Klaus said, ignoring his sister, appraising my brother's bloody mess.
I scrunched my face up as my brother pulled away from the body with blood on his mouth, "It's been a long day"
Yeah, avoiding your sister with every chance you got.
"Try being related to her" Klaus retorted, nodding his head towards Rebekah.
"Hey!" The female Mikaelson exclaimed hopping off of the table.
Stefan chuckled, "No different than being related to her"
My jaw dropped at his diss towards me, "Excuse me? Try being related to you and Damon while you two imbeciles pined after the same skank!"
Rebekah laughed, "Fantastic"
Klaus grinned wolfishly at my feisty attitude while my brother rolled his eyes before dropping his food on the ground and standing, "I need to go"
"I'll go with you" I said standing up, attempting for the final time to spend some time with my brother only to be shot down.
"Alone" He snapped before walking out, leaving me irritated and hurt.
Growling under my breath, I went to speed off and confront him only to be held back by Klaus.
He pulled me away from the entrance and spoke lowly in my ear, "Might want to calm down Dear Angel, your temperature is rising..."
After Klaus said that, I relaxed realizing he was right. I could actually feel my heightened temperature I had been so mad. Just by stopping what I was doing, I could feel my temperature lowering again but I will still pretty worked up about my brother's asshole cold shoulder he had been giving me.
"So what's up with you?" Rebekah inquired looking at me through narrowed eyes, "Are you some type of hothead?"
Chuckling, I shook my head, "No, I'm a type of hybrid"
Her eyebrows shot up, "A hybrid?"
"Yes"
"Like Nik?"
"Not exactly. I'm human, vampire, and unus ignis"
Rebekah looked impressed but doubtful, "Unus ignis? I thought those creatures were just a tall tale the witches told to convince vampires not to feed on humans"
"I know but we're not, we're very real" I said, laughing a bit, "But technically I'm not supposed to exist. I was born human and unus but I was turned vampire and any unus turned vampire has died almost instantly"
"Interesting..." Rebekah muttered, "Well I hope you don't die, I need another girl around"
And with that, she pranced out of the storage unit leaving Klaus and I alone.
We both looked at each other and laughed at what she said.
"I think she likes me" I said, nudging the male hybrid with my elbow.
Klaus laughed, "You're one of the first women in my life that she actually has liked"
My heart skipped a beat when he called me a woman in his life. Not a hostage or a friend or even just a person but someone that was in his life. I knew it shouldn't have meant so much to me but it had and I felt my temperature finally lower after he said it.
Sighing, I looked over at him sitting down on the couch where the drained corpses were, "Do you really think I'm going to die, Nik?"
His eyes darkened tremendously at my words, "No, I know you won't"
"How do you know?" I asked, having little faith in my survival.
"Because you're strong, Evangeline, and you're a fighter. You've taken on a rabid hybrid, Me, God know's what before we met and now you're going to fight against the odds and you'll win. I have no doubts that you'll win...you're my little warrior"
[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] - Winner November 2020 When a young woman is lured back to her homeland for the opportunity of a life time, she must face old fears. But never would she think that facing up to her past would change everything. Is History written by the victors, or by someone or something else...? *** I started writing this a few years ago and eventually fell out of love with it. I never finished it and my newer books are being written in different writing style, and genre with a more planned process. I decided to revisit it for the writathon and found that it wasn't as hopeless as I'd come to think. Hopefully, I've improved as a writer since them so the consistency may vary. Its been good to revisit and analyse my writing which I feel used to have some clunky and obvious dialogue which I'm trying to fix. This will always be my first novel and I hope, with a little exposure, I may come to like it again. Thanks for reading!
Author’s disclaimer: Hey there this is my first novel so any criticism will be well taken though beware I’m a million-year-old monster who has cultivated the way of the sword to the peak. The daily life of a cultivation judge will be true to its name so it will be heavily on the slice of life lane with a bit of action here and there.Meaning we will see the life of Yang Qing when he clocks in and out. Hopefully, it will be one of those novels you read if you need to relax or are in a slacker mood like one of those otakus who listen to the noises of cicadas in the summer famously used in most animes. And it is in the slacker spirit that chapter release will be on Wednesday,Thursday and Friday. Sank yuuu Cover art by Conny Schneider on Unsplash
