Michael felt his stomach sink as a loud noise filled the room and startled him awake. Sara jumped up with him. He put a finger to his lips signaling her to be quiet. She nodded and he made his way over to the window. He grabbed a small knife that was setting on the table and he peered out the window. Without hesitation he dropped below the window and crawled over to where Sara was on the other side of the bed.
"They're here." he said quietly. He felt her stop breathing. He grabbed her hand and led her to the closet. "Through here. Quickly." he said as he pulled open the door. A small trap door awaited them at the bottom of the closet floor. She refused to speak for fear someone would hear her. She jumped through the door waiting for Michael.
As soon as he closed the closet door he heard gun shots through the window. He closed the trap door and didn't look back. They heard the yelling while running through the small tunnel underneath the cabin. "Michael I don't know where we are going." she said frightfully. He grabbed her hand and walked in front of her so he could take the lead.
"I don't understand." he said with confusion as they ran through the cramped tunnel. "They shouldn't have been able to find us so quickly. It doesn't make any sense." They saw a small amount of light shining through the tunnel a few feet away from where they were standing. They rushed over to it. Sara tried to continue past it but Michael stopped her. He was in deep thought.
"What? What is it?" she asked him.
"Why were you released?" he asked her quickly.
"What?" she asked him with confusion.
"How could you have been released? You should have been in prison." he said while staring at her. She tried to remember the past events before Michael showed up to her apartment.
"Mahone told me that there was a development in my case when I was at the hospital. He said my lawyers found something and got me out of going to prison." She explained to him.
"Why were you at the hospital?" he asked her.
"I fainted in the transport van." she replied. He didn't speak. "Michael what is it?" she asked him desperately. She watched his eyes light up and he looked at her worriedly. Immediately he started rolling her sleeves up. "Michael what are you doing?!" she asked him.

"Did you feel any pain anywhere when you woke up?" he asked her frantically. She didn't respond. "Sara?!" he said more urgently. She jumped.
"Ye–yeah in my arm." She said recalling her first moments after she woke up.
"Which one?" he asked. She pointed to her left arm. He immediately began pressing his thumb into her arm.
"Ow!" she said suddenly. He stopped and pressed her arm again. She groaned slightly in pain. He felt something slightly hard underneath her skin. He cursed.
"What? What is it?" she asked. He sighed.
"Tracking implant. They've been following us the whole time. Thats why they found us so easily. It all makes sense now." She started panicking. He placed a hand on her face.
"Sara..." he started. "We have to take it out." Her eyes went wide but she knew he was right.
"Do it." she said. He nodded while taking the knife out of his pocket.
"This is going to hurt." He warned her. She took a deep breath and nodded to him. She heard faint voices and she looked at Michael. He heard them too.
"You have to hurry." She said. He nodded and began making a small incision on her arm. She hissed in pain and squeezed her eyes tightly. He went deeper trying to find the implant. She let out a shaky breath. It hurt like hell.
"Are you okay?" he asked her. She looked at him daring not to speak. If she did they might hear her. He dug a little deeper and finally managed to find it. He pulled it out gently and inspected it for a quick moment before destroying it completely. Her arm was covered in blood and he carefully wrapped it with a piece of cloth she had torn from her shirt.
"it should stop bleeding soon." She told him. He nodded and he heard distant yelling.
"We need to go now." he informed her. She agreed and they kept walking.
After an hour of walking through the tunnel they finally reached the end. Michael lifted the second trap door and revealed the sun shining down brightly on them. It blinded them for a moment after being in the dark for so long. Michael looked around to make sure they were alone before helping Sara out.
Sara heard a car pass by and she turned quickly to the road next to them. They were just out of sight from the highway. Michael looked at his phone. It was already 9:00 in the morning. They were a good three hour walking distance away from the docks but they only had an hour till the ship left.

Michael sighed. "We're not going to make it." he replied.
"Michael." Sara said with fear in her voice. Her voice seemed further than before. He turned quickly and saw her being held with a gun pointed at her temple. Mahone stood next to her with a grin on his face. Michael felt his breathing stop.
"I told you what would happen if you contact him again." Mahone spoke angrily. A tear escaped Sara's eye and it slid down her face.
"Please." she said but Mahone's grip on her tightened. Mahone laughed.
"I knew you would give in and lead me right to him." He said looking at Michael.
"You set me up." she said quietly.
"Did you expect anything differently?" he asked her. "Did you really think you were free of this? That you weren't going to go to prison for helping two criminals escape? I made a promise to you." he said while slowly pointing the gun at Michael. He stood still not wanting to make any sudden moves. There was no way out of this one.
"I told you that I would make you watch me kill him if you ever made contact with him again. I intend to keep that promise." Mahone said. More tears slipped passed her eyes.
"I'm sorry." she said to Michael. He shook his head. "This isn't your fault Sara." he said while carefully watching Mahone.
"You're time is up Michael." he said. Sara shut her eyes tightly and heard a loud gunshot. She cried not wanting to look. She had just lost the only person who made her feel alive.
She felt Mahone stumble behind her and his grip on her was released. She heard him fall to the floor and immediately opened her eyes. Blood pooled around her feet and she looked at Michael. He was next to her in an instant pulling her away. They both turned to see Lincoln standing next to the road. He had a gun in his hand.
"Let's go!" He yelled at them, They ran to the road where a car was sitting. They all jumped in and sped off quickly before anything else could take place. Michael took the backseat with Sara. She was breathing heavily and crying.
"I thought he shot you." She said quietly. He held her closely reassuring her that he was fine. He turned his attention to Lincoln.
"How did you find us?" he asked. "I thought you were half way across the world." Lincoln gave a small smile.
"You think I was about to leave you behind? No chance." he said while speeding up. He patted his brother on the back.
"Thank you." Michael said. Lincoln nodded and they drove towards the ship.
After an hour of driving they finally reached the dock. They boarded just before the ship left. There were no cops in sight. Lincoln and Michael looked at each other and smiled They were finally free. Michael tightened his grip on Sara. All of them were free.
A few hours had passed before they reached the same bus stop Lincoln and Michael had been on a few days before.
"Whats that smell?" Sara asked. Lincoln laughed remembering asking the same question.
"Bananas and sugar cane. Its Panama's biggest exports." Michael said happily.
"Way to say it with happier emotions this time." Lincoln said. Michael rolled his eyes and laughed with him. Sara glanced between the two brothers.
"I take it I missed something." She said with a smile. Michael shook his head and brought her closer to him. He hugged her instantly and she melted into his touch.
"I'm so glad you're here." he said sincerely. She backed up far enough to see his face and then kissed him.
"Theres no where else I would rather be." She responded.
"To think I have to share a boat with this." Lincoln said loud enough for them to hear him. Michael glared at him and Sara reached over and hit his arm playfully. They all laughed while enjoying the long bus ride to their boat that would lead them to paradise.

The Paths of Magick
Credits: Story by Xcaliburnt. Cover Art by @Bervolart. Magick, the power to bend the laws of reality. All because of a mystical substance known as mana. Mages follow the Paths to achieve power, for there is no more addictive chase. Each Path winds and twists, forcing mages through the flames of adversity and challenge. Though the operative word is "path", the reality is far less straightforward. Instead of a road, Paths are like the branches of world trees, erupting into the heavens, intertwining, and ending in sharp snaps. Only the strongest reach the sky. There are several Paths, and many Ways to walk them—variations of the same Path, and like the stars, they are endless. Magick is the sacred flame that scours the fat, rendering the truest self. Superfluous flesh melting away to show the skeleton of one's being. A chance for ascension—apotheosis. Though not every mage works to godhood, if they survive long enough, It is inescapable. Witness the lives of those that tread the knife's edge of self-destruction. Each one intertwined in their search for answers, revenge, and, most of all: power. These individuals have all lost something precious—irreplaceable—and In search of filling the void left behind, they have taken up the mantle of a mage. Per aspera ad astra. Ad mortem vel divinitatis. (Through adversity to the stars. To death or divinity.) There is no consistent release schedule except my consistent inconsistency. Besides, there’s like a thousand pages worth of content, how can—you already read it? Goddamn. Oh, and there is a very long hiatus between volumes as I intend to edit and rewrite a lot. What to Expect: This story is progression fantasy, so expect a healthy dose of training. It's also heavy on slice of life, and it isn't entirely overarching-plot-driven. Expect characters to live their lives, and not always be on some quest to save the world. There's a lot of magic theory and discussion about it in the story. So, if you don't like impromptu lessons on sorcerous theory by traveling monster slayers, this might not be for you. But if you do like it, rejoice! For there is a lot of it. This is also heavy on prose, purple as a bruised eye. I use outdated, uneccesarily collegiate-level terms and play around with the writing style just for the heck of it. I find it fun to wax and wane poetic, and that might grate on you—I don’t plan to change this aspect of the Paths much if at all. Onto the viewer discretion is advised parts: This is grim-dark/ grim-heart. Take the tags seriously. There will be combat scenes that are brutal and horrifying. Fights to the death tend to be. This is a tale about medieval mercenaries (quite literal killers for hire), man-eating monsters, and eldritch gods beyond the material plane. Beside that, there will be traumatic events that are best left unread. I do not detail certain acts I find heinous enough, instead leaving some parts unwritten but still alludded to if not outright stated; there is simply no graphic narration thereof. This is not for the faint of heart.
