Testing Fate
Part 31
*Justin's POV*
I picked up the finale box that was sitting in what Selena and I had decided the babies' room.
"Okay Sel, everything's cleared!" I yelled so she could hear me where she sat with her 4 month belly on our bed watching TV.
"Do you want to go baby shopping now that we have somewhere to put the stuff?" She asked walking in behind me as I looked around the bare room.
Even though she was only 4 months she was huge. It was hard to believe we didn't even find out until she was 3 months because of how big she was now.
"Shouldn't we wait to find out the genders?" I asked.
"I guess," she nodded.
"Only one more week till we find out," I said wrapping my arm around her.
"I know. I'm kind of nervous," she laughed shaking her head as a tear began to descend down her face.
"What's wrong?" I asked cupping her face with my hands as I wiped the tear with my thumb.
She shook her head again mumbling, "Hormones."
I kissed her cheek and sighed. "Want to get ice cream?" I asked hoping to distract her mind.
"Yes!" She screamed and attempted to run out of the room to out her shoes on.
I laughed at how childish she was acting as I grabbed the keys, meeting her at the car.
Once we arrived at a little ice cream parlor we ordered and sat down to eat our ice cream.
"I love you," I smiled.
Selena opened her mouth to talk but it wasn't her voice that came out.
"Selena?" The voice asked and I turned around to see Leigh accompanied by James.
"Hi guys," Selena said with worry in her voice.

"Oh my gosh you're so big," Leigh gushed.
"I been meaning to call you guys but I just kept forgetting. I guess I've been really busy designing the new clothing line," she explained.
"How's the baby? Have you found out the gender yet?" James asked.
"No gender."
"Twins actually," I pipped in happily.
"James did you hear that we are getting twins," Leigh exclaimed which cause confusion to settle on my face.
I looked over at Selena who had an apologetic look on her face.
"Can I speak to you for a moment Selena?" I said standing up and walking over to a table in the corner.
"You told them they were getting our baby?" I asked hardly trying to keep my voice quiet.
"Justin, that was before you said you wanted the baby. I didn't think you would want it," she sighed looking down.
"You have to tell them that we are keeping them," I said sternly.
"Let's compromise, what if we tell them that they can have one but we get the other. They will never go of that, so they will just let us have both," she reasoned.
As I thought about it, it actually made sense. They wouldn't split up the twins so in the end we would be winning without really hurting them. It seemed like a win win to me.
*Selena's POV*
"So Justin and I talked about it and we want to keep at least one of the children," I said once we got back to the table where out melted ice cream sat in its bowl.
James and Leigh looked at each other for a minute before turning back to us. "Okay well do it."
"Excuse me," Justin said, his eyes widening in fright.

"Well stick with the deal. We each get one baby," Leigh smiled.
"What about splitting up the twins?" Justin asked shocked.
"Well make sure they stay close. It won't be a problem it will just like there more best friends than siblings," James explained.
"Uh okay?" I said. Honestly my brain wasn't really registering what was happening. "Well we better get going. I have a meeting I have to go to."
Justin got up silently and followed me out to the car.
"You said they wouldn't take the offer," Justin said, hurt lacing each word.
"I didn't think they would," I sighed feeling super guilty.
"You bargained out children. You bet with them and you lost," he said almost as he was trying to get it all sorted in his brain the same way I was trying.
"I'm sure when the babies are born they will feel differently and not want to separate them," I explained mostly to myself.
"Like you were sure they were going to say no?" He asked turning to me in disgust.
We drove home in complete silence. I think both of us were too deep in thought to talk and not to mention the fact that Justin couldn't even bare to look at me.
When we pull up to the house he put his foot on the break but never turned off the car or even unbuckled his seat belt.
"Do you have somewhere else to go?" I asked confused as I slowly got out of the car.
"Yeah, home," he said.
"This is your home, Justin," I replied.
"No this is your home," he said as I slammed the door shut and watched him reverse out of the drive way and speed off down the street.

This was my entry for National Novel Writing Month, because why only write one series at a time? The more the merrier! (meanwhile, my keyboard bursts into flames...) I'm also the writer of The Last Science, an ongoing low-fantasy/speculative sci-fi series. If you're familiar with that, you know what to expect here: lots of character-focused drama and dialogue, not a whole lot of traditional action. However, I'm writing a bit differently than usual here, and in a very different structure, so there should be some surprises for returning readers. I hope you enjoy it! [Discord] — for those of you who want to hang out and chat. Cover art (fullsize): Path of Revelation, by taenaron (Tobias Roetsch), modified by Etzoli. Normally I like to do my own cover art from scratch, but I was in a rush for the contest. Might be replaced down the line if I get time.
