《Unstable (L x Reader)》Chapter Four: Bits and Pieces of Time

Thinking of that shinigami hovering around Light made me think of my home I was stripped from, my dad was a shinigami and then had me. Not sure how... since I'm well aware how kids are produced, but no matter.
No one noticed how (name) was just staring over Light's shoulder, not even Light. Just his Shinigami Ryuk. He felt like he had seen her before, maybe he just heard of her. But after (name)'s incident very long ago, about 13 years ago, her father returned to his original world and her mother ran away with his deathnote and did killings in other places which really needed it. She sadly died while (name) was in captivity since she made the trade and her original lifespan was just about 86 years. And the nurses didn't even bother to tell her just to keep her that isolated. But as the task force worked they were all thinking what was wrong with (name) if she was in a mental institute. They were all wondering if she was hinting something towards the chief. L was thinking something similar to that too. He was thinking that Chief Yagami knew why she was i n the institute. But that made him wonder why they would even cover up why she was in there if the police had the same information. But all (name) could keep thinking was who was behind Light and if Chief Yagami would ever recognize her...
I watched as they did their work quietly, but it sure got boring. But then the thing they were watching stopped. It caught my attention after fiddling with my thumbs for so long. L then asked Light something, asking him what he thought of whatever they were watching. I think he was talking about how the video was talking about eyes and shinigami. I understood really well, I had an eye of my own that I could see lifespans, I always covered it with my hair. Then I heard L turn towards me. I looked at him, he asked me the same thing. "I think what this means is that there's someone else that is like Kira and they are saying that Shinigami are really real and there's a way to see them." L hummed towards my response and seemed to be thinking about what I had said. I turned my attention back to Light. He did seem very smart which made sense why L asked him about the thing they were watching that I barely paid attention to. But the Shinigami behind Light was very interesting. Then people started leaving, but the Yagami's dragged along and stayed for a bit. They talked with L. I guess L and Light are buds or something? "Hey (name), I'm not sure if this is out of place but do you think you could help me with my psychology homework? It's my worst class and I figured you must be good at it since you seemed to be reading us the whole time." Shit he noticed. I guess I can be easily noticeable when I read people. Oh well! "Yeah sure... I mean if I can leave." "What do you mean?" "Light I was deemed clinically insane. I don't think people want me wandering a town I have not been in for a very long time." "Well then just ask L, you're staying with him." "That just feels wrong, we are nearly the same age." "Well then ask Watari." "He's not home." Right after I said that he entered through the door and was carrying what looked like cakes or something. "Hey Watari is (name) allowed to leave the room?" "Well yes but she must be under supervision." "Would it be fine by you if she came with me to help me study for school?" "For a little while, she must be back by 9." Light made a "I told you so" face in front of me so I got up in defeat, slipped on some shoes, and we left the building. Lights dad was kind enough to drive us back to their house and I finally got to see the city a bit more since last time I passed out from sedation drugs. Then Mr. Yagami spoke to break the silence.

"(name).. Where are you from?" Mr. Yagami kindly asked.
"I'm not super sure... but this area does seem oddly familiar, my memory has been hazy for the longest time." I said trying really hard to remember the details of before I was in a hospital.
"If you don't mind me asking... again... (name), what mental hospital were you staying in?" Mr. Yagami asked again.
"I don't know the name but it was one floor, though it was very big, and had a cafeteria and three little areas for the things you were there for." I said.
I could hear him gruble to himself and ask himself why I seemed so familiar with him. I then asked him a question to help him out,
"Have you ever detained, or arrested, a ten year old?"
"I have arrested a few, one of them I saw pickpocket and they thought I wasn't looking at them. The other tried to rob a convenience store. The last one was so long ago there was this kid that got really violent with their parents." He answered.
"I think I remember hearing that in the news... something about a kid having a fit or something." I said... with the tone in my voie that I was hinting something.
"That wasn't in the news though..." He said slowly.
"Dad I think she's hinting towards you that she was the one you arrested." Light said figuring me out.

participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge and also having a go at NaNoWriMo this November. This was a first draft published as it was written for Nanowrimo November 2020. A little rough around the edges, I hope to come back and edit at some point, and then continue the story on. In the grand scheme of things Elias was nothing special. Which was why he was surprised by a random company on a new colony planet buying out his contract. That was the problem with the large companies that ruled the colonies, once they owned your contract, they owned you. Imagine the greater surprise when he learnt that the new company held the promise of freedom. Not from the constant battle against the Swarm that were also trying to claim the colony planets for their own. Nor from the Crust, the mysterious substance that covered the same planets and held the resources they all fought for. No, the freedom from being oppressed by those with more power and to finally decide where to go and where to set down roots and call home.

The Dreamside Road
Five years after the world fell into chaos, a treasure of artifacts is up for grabs. The relics of the Dreamside Road offer a power that could help rebuild or annihilate what remains. Orson Gregory is an adventurer for hire, but hunts this treasure for answers, not glory. Enoa Cloud’s late aunt helped hide the Dreamside Road, but following in her aunt’s supernatural tradition offers her as much peril as power. Together, Orson and Enoa battle a magic-obsessed militia, clash with a host of rivals, and face constant adventure on their journey to find the Dreamside Road. *Updates Monday and Friday The Dreamside Road is now on TopWebFiction! Vote so people know this exists. _____________________________________ NOTE: The Progression tag applies specifically to Enoa. Also, fair warning, that element doesn't enter the story until she begins her studies. Content: Main characters range in age from teenagers to people in their thirties and older, but it will not contain gratuitous violence or explicit sexual content. It also won’t shy away from implication, anything to make this story and its world feel more real. Characters will freely allude to potentially triggering topics, including living with a disability, facing terminal illness, coping with trauma, surviving societal destabilization, and the consequences of bigotry. At its most intense, the Dreamside Road is a hard PG-13. Worldbuilding: This is not a story with a lot of early exposition scenes, conveniently explaining ‘magic systems’ and political dynamics. Readers will learn, progressively, as the characters do. This story/world has a ‘magic system’, or rather, a set of systems, but the effort to quantify and understand the truth of the setting plays a role in the backstory, as well as in some character motivations. In that same vein, not every character has a firm grasp on the nature of their world, and not every piece of dialog from every character should be taken as entirely truthful Worldbuilding. Also, this isn't the softest Sci-fi. There are at least some basic explanations given for various elements, but Royal Road does not give me a spectrum to choose from. Given the choice between hard and soft, let's just say The Dreamside Road won't be cited in any college Physics papers. Setting and Theme: The Dreamside Road walks the line between fantasy and science fiction and deals with finding one’s place in a changing world. Many of the characters in this story are United States natives and the story begins in the United States, my homeland. However, knowledge or interest in this country is not necessary to understand the story, especially as it progresses. Also, as this is a novel that deals with societal collapse and while that damage may be widespread, in story, I don’t want to overstep and critique the culture of others’ unless I have particular knowledge in a given area. Ultimately, the Dreamside Road is American in the same way Harry Potter is English, fantasies that do not have a full secondary world, but with enough original elements to fully diverge the setting from our the real world.
