《Zarath: Age of Growth》Chapter 2: Grand General Vanessa

The secretary just silently stared at her, unable to comprehend Sarah. But she also has seen crazier stuff and decided to do what she has always done, to pretend everything is fiiiiiine. Breathing out her mouth, she continued on with her assignments, with a flip of her hand the papers on her desk rearranged themselves to show all the types of Dungeon cores.
"Alright, there are many different Dungeon cores that have different purposes and functions. Universally, dungeon core are basically like the Dungeon Master of D&D, but instead of creating the entire world, they create a labyrinth were people can adventure in." She took another stack of paper and handed them over to Sarah.
"Hmmm so like a baby DM, I can dig it." Sarah had the paper turn into a tablet began scrolling through them. There was an extensive list of pros and cons of all kinds of different Dungeon Cores. Seeing that this was going to require a lot of research and time, she decided to simplify by asking the secretary to do the work.
"Yea…, can I get the core with the most amount of freedom and sidekick to pawn off the hard work to?"
The secretary tapped her chin with her pen in thought before deciding on an answer. "I guess it would be an Anchor Dungeon Core, the actual core is relatively free to do what they want with their dungeon but is heavily restricted by the plane they are excavating. They also get a dungeon companion." She was clicking her pen on a piece of paper and began writing before signing off. The paper flew off, disappearing into a hole that just opened out of nowhere and looked like it led to a void of blackness.
"Ok, so I created a quest for a dungeon companion for a sentient dungeon core. You should get a dungeon companion soon after arriving at your plane. Any other questions?"

"Well, what does an Anchor Dungeon do?'
"Your dungeon companion can explain in finer details. Ok, so I just need you to sign your name here and here." She gave a clipboard with a piece of paper and pen over to Sarah.
"Wait! Can I choose a different name for this reincarnation?
"Yes, any prior past doesn't matter; this includes your name."
"Alright nice, Hmmm so I need some kind of fancy name, a royal name, a name that sounds regal. Yeahhhh like an Elizabeth, Grand Duchess Elizabeth yes that sounds nice, but Elizabeth is too basic." Sarah began stroking her non-existent beard hair, while deep in thought. "Mary? Na. Charlotte? Too old. Amelia? Victoria? That one is ok. Hmmm Vanessa, Grand Empress Vanessa, yes that sounds like a very virtues person. Perfect! Sounds just like me!."
"As for the last name, I'll just write To be determined." Sarah now Vanessa, took the pen and mentally changed the color to a royal purple before signing. "Ok, is that it? Do I just poof and I'm there or what?"
The secretary took the paper back looked over it before nodding her head and signing it herself. "Ok do you have any other questions?"
"Well about-"
"You can send any other inquiries at a later date, Good luck, and Bye."
"Where can iiiiiiii-" before she could ask her question she was dropped into a void. She fell through the floor, and on the way down she saw what looked like cosmic wet papers, they were wrinkled and twisted. As she continued to fall, she noticed that some papers had parts that looked more solid and colorful compared to the shadowy twilight theme of the rest of them. She was even able to make out what seems like an ocean in one of these papers, it spread to the very edge then turning from a deep blue to a black blue. But that soon past as many other dimensions or at least that what Vanessa thought they were, she fell for some time she even began to get bored.

"Maybe this is a glitch in the matrix, I mean I could have at least gotten some Peanuts. I swear this dumb librarian better not of-- o shit what happens!?" Mid complaint Vanessa surrounding changed from a starry background of wet papers to being on top a shadowy hill surrounded by some kind freaky twilight forest. Behind the trees, things moved in swirls. Vanessa tried to get a better look at the swirls, but oddly enough they just legitimately swirled like you would see in a cartoon. She looked around more and tried picking up what looked like a rock from the ground only to notice she doesn't have any hands or body for that matter. "Goddammit, who took my body again, stupid body snatchers I swear" as she began to grumble she noticed that she, in fact, could pick up the rock with her new cloud-like body. "I guess this works too, now if this dumb rock would stop moving!" While holding on to the rock with her cloudy white appendage, she noticed that the stone did not have a defined shape. At first, it was a rough baseball shape rock then it became a smooth baseball, and then a soft oval shape rock. "Ok rock you be you, I will respect any shape you want to be. I'll just be way over there." She began to float towards the top of the hill she landed on, but as soon as she moved, a Screen popped up.
Please choose a location for your core.
Current location:
17% Hills
14% River
48% Temperate Forest
4% Mountains
13% Mangroves
4% Tropical Rainforest
Vanessa was startled but not at the weird screen, but at the fact that there were numbers. Squinting, she said "Aaah….. my old ARCH enemy, numbers. So we meet again, you and math might have gotten the best of me before. BUT, you now face Supreme Leader Vanessa! And I decree this location shall be the start of my new home, now Begone numbers you have no power here!" If Vanessa had a body instead of a being cloud, she would be smiling smugly and had her hands on her hips with her chest stuck out.
Moments after declaring her decree, the cloud that composed Vanessa started to swirl and storm. The size of the cloud became smaller and smaller, it became the size of a ping pong ball and looked like it was about to explode. But before some kind of explosion happened, the cloud suddenly became calm before condensing into a small green crystal that turned brown towards the center.
Vanessa suddenly noticed she could actually see the forest and hills in color. No longer in a shadowy form, in fact, she could hear and see some birds. She took a quick glance around from the top of the hill she was located on. And saw that the slope was mostly made of pebbles and boulders with little vegetation. The forest around the bottom of the hill was thin before thickening. She also noticed that she was no longer an opaque cloud but a transparent mist that centered around the green gem. In fact, the change from a cloud to gem was so quick, she didn't have time to react. Where there once was an unsure rock and hill now stood a whole plane. "Well, that escalated quickly."

MeiQ is, at its core, a fanfiction inspired by the Etrian Odyssey franchise, alternatively known as Sekaiju no Meikyuu in Japan. Despite that, it is written with the intent to be enjoyable by those unfamiliar with the series as well. The characters and the city of Omaros are original, while the story draws upon lore and recurring concepts from the game series. However, Etrian Odyssey is known for its lore being sparse and open to speculation, so much of the details provided in this story are exactly that—a fan’s speculation and personal expansion of the lore. This story was also inspired by and written as part of HereBeTreasure's Fast Food Frontpage Competition, enjoy some simple dungeon exploration plot and whatever else pops up from this.
