《The Reborn: Book One》Chapter Fourteen: I guess we're a Party!

"Sage?" Chance gasped as he opened his eyes. His head was still pounding but seeing his friend, even if she was still asleep, gave him the hope he needed to pull himself up. He placed his hand on his chest and slowly healed himself as much as possible. I have to save some for everyone else.
Chance slowly reached over, placed his hand on the sleeping Sage, and gave her a little healing: Nothing much, but he could hear some bones cracking and popping. Sage's eyes twitched for a second before she finally opened them.
"Chance?" Sage smiled.
"Yeah! I am so happy to see you." Chance said softly. He was so happy to see his friend. Now more than ever, he felt like they had a chance of getting out of this dungeon. "I thought I would never see you again," Sage said softly. It was the truth. She had felt like she would die more times than she could count. Having no concept of time in the dungeon wasn't helping her either. It was hard to explain, but it felt like seeing Chance made her feel normal again.
-
"You're awake!" Fate said as she came back over the rocks: Mark was right behind her. Fate put her teeth together as she placed her foot down. "I am! Let me heal you." Chance said as he reached over and placed a hand on Fate. As he healed her leg, he spoke, "Sage, this is Fate. She is the reason I'm still alive."
Fate twitched as her leg began to mend. "Hi." She gave Sage a small wave.
"I guess she is why I'm alive, too," Sage said as she thought back on the rocks being removed from her chest. "Oh!" She exclaimed as she motioned to Mark. "This is Mark; he is the mage that helped me escape when I was first transported here."

"Technically, she helped me too," Mark said seriously as he reached over to help Sage up. "How are you not injured?" Sage asked as she took his hand. "Further down, we found a room that had some supplies inside. Fate gave me the health potion." Mark said. "She told me Chance could heal, so she wanted to wait." He continued.
"Speaking of healing, I am running low on the blue bar." Chance said as he slowly stood up with the help of Fate. "That bar is your mana." Mark snorted. "You have to keep a close eye on it. You can pin it by pinching the bar and moving it out of the screen." Mark explained.
Chance opened his inventory and flipped around until he found his mana bar. Chance placed two fingers over the bar and pinched. Chance was able to pull the bar out and move it around. "This is so cool." He admitted as he placed the bar near his wrist. He did the same with his health bar.
Sage watched Chance move his health bar and figured it was a good idea, so she followed suit. After Sage moved the bar, she asked, "How do we get the health bar to display numbers?" Mark shook his head, "Only wizards and knights can see the exact numbers of their health bars."
"You seem to know a lot about all of this." Chance pointed out.
"I have been here a while," Mark mumbled as Fate moved a couple of rocks to the side.
-
"We have to keep moving forward. When Mark and I went ahead, we found a room with the bare minimum for supplies. I have a little water and some adventuring rations left. Now that we have a bigger group, we should be able to explore freely." Fate said as she took her shield out and got ready to continue forward.

"So we are sticking together?" Sage asked as she slid out her short sword.
"I think it would be best until we escape this place," Mark said seriously. "You and Fate can take point. Chance and I will cover you guys from behind."
"You're a fighter?" Fate asked as they began walking down the hallway.
"I am trying to be one," Sage said softly. "The truth is I am terrible at it so far." Sage slid her hair back with her free hand.
"No one is ever good right off the rip. We all have to take the time out to get better." Fate said seriously. "I have a feeling you're going to get plenty of practice here."
-
As the group reached the end of the hallway, Fate slowly approached the last door. She kept her shield held tightly. Fate was expecting something to leap out at her. Sage kept her weapon at the ready, and as the door opened, the two gasped.
They were looking at the beginning of a maze. The stone walls stood high above their heads. As Sage looked over, she noticed the floor was missing around the labyrinth. The only way they could press on was straight through. As the women examined their surroundings, a voice boomed around them.
"I am surprised you're still alive!" A man said. Chance slid his spear out and pointed it at the closest wall.
"You each have something I want, and until I get it you will remain stuck here in my dungeon." The man said before the maze slowly shifted its position. He didn't speak for a couple of minutes before saying, "I can see everything you're doing. You will never reach me."
Fate took that as the ultimate challenge. Now, this guy was on her hit list. She just had to figure out where his voice was coming from. After a couple more minutes of silence, Chance spoke, "Who the hell was that?"
Mark shook his head. "If I had to guess, that is the guy who got us sent here in the first place/ He said he can see everything we are doing." Mark looked to Fate, who was getting ready to head into the maze.
"We need to find him and kill him so we can escape." Fate said as she marched forward.
"What about what he said? Do we all have something he wants?" Chance asked as he moved to follow Fate. "What if he can hear us?" Sage proposed. "I don't want to have this conversation if he can hear our every word." She whispered.
"Sage is right. For now, we should push forward and clear out this maze." Mark said as he followed his party into the beginning of the maze.

But giving up is not inside his DNA and fight on he must. For to stop is to die, and to die means he failed, failed himself and all those who still desperately need him.***The Author's Note:This is another in the Core series, the first one being The Wardens of Destiny while there is also a side story The Memoires of Eisen that's exclusive on Patreon for those who would like to support me.The Recordings of Raan occurs after the events in The Wardens of Destiny, and it's a separate thread from the main story. Among other things, I separated it into a new book as it has elements of progressive LitRPG and a fantasy-world setting.Since I'll keep on writing The Wardens of Destiny, this will be one of my side-projects. Eventually in the future, I plan to integrate some of the protagonists in this story with the main storyline.

Shadowrun: Blake Island School of Magic
It's a high tech, low life. It's the Seattle Metroplex in 2074. It rises like a steel and concrete cancer out of the earth. Poverty is rampant, corruption is everywhere, crime is out of control, corporations basically control everything, the old United States is fractured, magic has come back and now it turns out that humanity has been joined by elves, dwarves, orks and trolls. The old world ended but the rent is still due. Life goes on. You'd be surprised what people can adapt to, especially if they don't have a choice. One of the places where life goes on is just west of Seattle. Surrounded by the waters of the Puget Sound is an island. On that island is the Blake Island School of Magic. A decade ago it was known for producing some of the most talented awakened in the world. That reputation was hijacked by the wealthy corporate elite who now park their teenage children there. And since it's a boarding school, their parents mostly forget about them. Three young people, who are certainly not wealthy or elite, are chosen this year to attend this school of magic in hopes of revitalizing their reputation for talent. One from the ash drifts of the Puyallup Barrens, one from the most densely populated slum hive in the world and one from prison. This is their story. -- This story is set in the Shadowrun universe. If you're not familiar with Shadowrun, it mostly tells the stories of deniable mercenaries called shadowrunners in a cyberpunk dystopia. Instead of telling another story solely about shadowrunners, this story will tell the tale of young people navigating a world that is indifferent to them at best and actively hostile at worst. Shadowrunners will be in the story and we'll see them operate, but they won't be its main focus. This story originally began in 2017 as a passion project and continues to this day on the Somethingawful.com forums. The unedited version is over a million words strong. There are currently seven books in this series and I am currently in the process of editing them. If you read this story then you won't lack for content. -- The Topps Company, Inc. has sole ownership of the names, logo, artwork, marks, photographs, sounds, audio, video and/or any proprietary material used in connection with the game Shadowrun.
