《The Reborn: Book One》Chapter Thirteen: I hate Rats

"It feels like we have been walking forever." Chance groaned as Fate slowly opened another wooden door. She signed when she saw yet another empty room. They walked down this hallway for hours, and each room was empty. To Chance, it felt like someone was playing a cruel joke on him. Ever since they beat the giant lizard, he has been itching for more action. Sadly it seemed like he wouldn't be getting it anytime soon.

"We just have to be calm." Fate mumbled.

"Are you telling me that? Or are you trying to convince yourself?" Chance asked as he opened another door. He slammed it shut once he realized the room was empty. "I am so sick of this!" Chance snapped. His voice echoed down the hallway.

"I am, too but getting mad at empty rooms will not do us any good." Fate said softly. She was trying to hold it together, but truthfully she was losing patience just as fast as Chance. Luckily she was better at hiding it, for the moment anyway.

"I am itching for more action." Chance declared.

"I understand how you feel, but for the moment, we should focus on figuring out how to get out of this hallway." Fate said as she looked back. Walking back would mean they just wasted hours of their time. "I know, okay?" Chance said as he opened his inventory and after his class tree. He figured he might do something productive while they walked to nowhere.

"That was such a pain," Sage grumbled as she and Mark shook the goo off of their armor and weapons. That giant slug gave them a run for their money, and the skeletons they fought were nothing nice either.

Mark placed his hand on his arm. He was missing almost all of his gear. Luckily, he still had his leather armor and wooden wand. As they pushed forward, it felt like they had no chance of getting out of here. Great, I get a second chance at life only to be trapped in a dungeon.

Sage slid her hand on the stone wall before pausing. They could hear voices and slamming below them. "There are other people here," Sage whispered to Mark. He was looking at the floor, trying to figure out if there was any way to get down. Sadly, Mark knew he couldn't bust through the stone floor; he was not that strong and didn't have a spell that could help here.

"If we keep walking, we are bound to hit stairs," Mark suggested.

Sage gave him an encouraging nod in return. She was hoping that they could find more people, get them to join their team, and together they could finish this dungeon. She slid the last bag of rations from her pocket. Luckily the snail had dropped some. "Here," Sage offered some to Mark. He took the food and bit it; he let out a small sigh. "If we don't find more food and water soon, we will be in trouble." He said to Sage. She knew he was right, but she couldn't think about that right now.

-

"Ya know what, Fate?" Chance asked as he took his spear off of his back and used it to poke at some of the cobwebs as they walked.

"What?" Fate replayed. She was mentally counting each of the cobwebs as Chance broke them.

"I think this is good for us. We ge-" Chance paused, and Fate turned her head back. They could hear what sounded like running behind them.

"Something is coming." Fate declared as she pulled out her shield. Chance stepped behind her and braced himself for combat.

As the running got louder, Chance narrowed his eyes. Whatever was running at them was screeching loudly. Once it came into view, Fate's eyes shot open. It was some kind of rat creature with a barrel on its back. "Is that a fuse?!" Chance screamed as he turned around and began running. Fate turned as fast as she could and followed behind him.

The creature was very fast. Even with the barrel on its back, it seemed to be keeping up with them. "What the hell?!" Fate screamed as she pumped her arms. She wanted to fly away. Clearly, that was not going to happen, so she tried to brace herself for the inevitable explosion.

There was no amount of bracing they could do to prepare them for the barrel exploding. When the barrel went off, Chance froze. The force of the explosion rocked his body to its core. He watched Fate fly past him and felt the burning sensation on his back. The noise rattled his head. The explosion thrust his body into the closest wall. The walls around him began to shake. He watched as the roof crumbled.

-

Sage screamed as the floor shook beneath their feet. Mark put his teeth together and planted his hand on the closest wall. The stone broke from underneath them.

Mark had no time to respond when the stone gave way. His head smacked the rock, and Sage watched as he fell. She screamed one last time as the rocks gave way. Sage could feel her back land on the stones below. She spits out a glob of blood as some smaller stones hit her stomach.

This is it. This is how I die. Sage thought as she tried to turn her head. Her vision was getting blurry. Eventually, she had to give in and close her eyes.

-

"Chance, wake up!" Fate screamed as she put her hands on his chest. He was clearly still breathing, but there was not much she could do for him. "Chance!" She snapped again. Chance's eyes shot open his chest ached. The dream he was having was good. It felt so real and so close. Once he opened his eyes, the pain came flowing through his body. He put his teeth together and looked up at Fate. Her blood was running from her nose and dripping onto his chest.

"You're alive?" Chance mumbled.

"Yes." Fate said softly. She slowly stood up. As she moved, pain shot through her hips. Luckily she was carrying her shield. She made a mental note to buy a better one if she ever got the chance.

Fate slowly examined the rocks. When she saw streaks of blonde hair, she quickly rushed over. "Hello?" Fate coughed as she approached the unknown woman. Sage slowly opened her eyes. Her back felt like it had been split in two.

"Hi." Sage coughed as she glanced at the woman. "Are you real? Did I die?" Sage asked seriously.

"I am very real." Fate said as she began removing rocks from Sage. With each stone removed, Sage let out another painful groan. Once she could breathe properly, she coughed loudly. "How am I alive?" Sage asked Fate. Honestly, Fate had no clue, so she gave Sage a tired smile. "I would assume it is because of our classes, " Fate replied: This was a good enough answer for Sage.

"My friend." Sage groaned, she wanted to sit up and look for Mark, but her body wouldn't allow it. "His name is Mark. He fell first. Can you see if he is alive?" She asked Fate.

Fate looked around and slowly hobbled as far as she could. "Mark?" She called into the dusty hallway. She called his name one more time, and that is when she saw some rocks moving. Mark slowly rose from the rubble. "If we were normal people, that would have killed us all," Mark said to Fate.

"I know." Fate said softly.

Fate and Mark worked together to help Chance and Sage out of the rubble and into a small clearing. The duo slept through being moved. Once they were settled, Mark let Fate rest. He was scared to close his eyes because of his head injury.
