《The Reborn: Book One》Chapter Fifteen: Balance

Sage placed a hand on the wall closest to her as the party entered the maze. "How are we going to do this? It looked like the maze shifted a little from the outside." She said to her group.

"I have never done anything like this before." Fate mumbled as she looked at each of the walls. She was walking slower now. "If we get stuck in here, there is a very real chance that we die." Fate mumbled.

"Don't think like that." Chance said. "If there are monsters in here and we kill them, we can take their loot! We can survive in here as long as we have to. I know we can." Chance said with as much conviction as he could muster.

"Oh, and as long as there are no rats." Chance added quickly. That comment earned a chuckle from Fate. "So when we fight things, how will that work?" Chance asked the group as they came to the first fork in the road.

"The same way it always has." Sage and Fate say simultaneously: This made Chance pause for a second. If it were going to work the same way it always has, that would mean Fate and Sage will both be causing distractions while he and Mark have to stall so they can come up with a plan. Chance made a mental note to continue this discussion at a later date.

"What direction now?" Mark asked.

"I have no clue." Fate sighed. "Maybe we can toss Sage up, and she can see over the wall?" Fate suggested with a slight snicker. Sage wasn't hearing any of it. "Absolutely not. This thing moves, and if I fall, I'll die." Sage protested.

"It was a joke." Fate said as she began walking left. "Come on, let's go this way!"

-

As the group turned the corner, Sage gasped. Something had reached out from the wall and grabbed her leg. "Something is holding me!" She snapped as she looked down. She was ready to slice the creature but couldn't get a good angle because of her leg.

Chance moved to stab the hand but paused when he heard groaning coming from in front of the party. "Free her!" Fate snapped at Chance as she got ready to hold off whatever was coming for them.

"I got your back," Mark said as he slid his wand out of his pocket and got ready to fight. Chance poked at hand a bunch before taking Sage's short sword and slicing the wrist. Sage kicked her leg back and took her sword. "Thank you." She said before turning to face Fate.

"We have company." Fate said as she got her blade ready. A group of three zombies turned the corner. "Ew," Sage mumbled as she got ready to slash at the creatures.

"I have fought these before!" Fate declared. "They're zombies! Go for their brains." She said as she put her shield up to block an incoming attack. "I know they're slow, but don't let them scratch or bite you." Fate said seriously.

Chance put his spear over Fate's shoulder and shoved it through the eye of one of the undead. He had to bring his arm back and forth to knock the zombie off of his spear a couple of times.

"That is so nasty," Sage said as she slashed at one of the zombies. As the zombie snapped back and slowly stood up, Mark hit it with a blue ray of light. The zombie shook back and forth before Sage slammed her sword into its head. "I guess lightning isn't going to do anything." Mark sighed.

Once the party defeated the zombies, Chance put his arms up and let out a happy scream. Sage and Fate watched as the zombies slowly dissolved into nothing. Mark opened his inventory and waited for the loot to arrive in his inventory.

-

"Why are we not getting loot?" Sage asked. The party stood around for twenty minutes, and she was getting tired of waiting.

Your loot has been added to a collection chest. Your experience points have been gathered as well. Collection chests appear in the center of dungeons and mini-dungeons.

"Are you kidding me?" Chance snapped at the message box that appeared before the party. "We did all of that work for nothing?" He waved his hand at the message box, hoping it would give them some insight. Eventually, the box disappeared.

"So we have to clear the dungeon to get our loot?" Mark complained.

"No," Fate said sharply. "We have to make it to the center of the dungeon. I assume the center is this maze, so we have to clear the maze to get our loot."

"So we press on," Sage said as she looked in the only direction they could move. "We head to where these zombies came from. We just have to keep moving."

-

At first, Sage was hopeful that they would eventually make it to the maze's center, but after fighting twelve more zombies, she was beginning to feel like everything was hopeless. She hated feeling like this. Sage felt like her feelings were not allowed to change. Every time she got her hopes up, something happened to knock her down again.

Fate turned a corner and let out a sigh. "We hit a dead end." She said to the party. The defeated looks on their faces told her everything she needed to know. "I'm not saying we need to be happy right now." Fate started as she placed her hands on the wall. "But I am saying we need to remain hopeful." She looked up to judge the height of the wall. "I think we should try and climb this."

Chance put his hands on his hips. "Sage already said she wouldn't climb, and I don't think it is a good idea anymore. If something happens up there, it will be tough to fight."

"I am so against this, but I have to agree with Fate," Sage said as she put her weapon away. "We need the loot from the center, and if we keep walking around like this, we will end up dying of starvation."

Mark hated all their options. He put his wand away and walked over to the wall. "We can do this if we take our time." He said to the group. Chance was reluctant, but the idea of starving to death was scary enough to sway his opinion. "Okay." Chance said softly.

-

It took the group a minute to get up on the wall. Sage was so nervous she felt like she might faint at any moment. Once she was able to get her footing, the view took her breath away. The maze was massive, and this whole time the walls were scalable. She knew they would have to be careful going from wall to wall.

"We can do this," Sage said to light the room with enough confidence. "I agree!" Fate announced as she adjusted her feet. Once Chance got up, he and Fate pulled Mark to the top.

Chance slid his spear out again and used it to help him stay balanced. "If we get attacked up here, let Mark and I handle as much fighting as possible." Chance said as he steadied his footing. He glanced down into the maze. Although they were able to scale the wall, it looked like the labyrinth walls only got higher. He figured if they fell into the maze he could at least heal any injuries his party sustained. However, falling out of the labyrinth was going to kill them.

"If you fall, try and fall into the maze." Chance said seriously.

"Yeah, it looks like there is no bottom to the other side," Mark said as the group slowly balanced across the top of the maze.
