Before us, there were three giant monsters standing in front of a broken wall. Somehow, they broke the city walls. Immediately flares went up to alert the neighboring cities, and ask them for reinforcements. I looked in shock for a couple of seconds, then eventually started running toward them. Liam called to me and asked, "What the fuck are you doing!? Those are the biggest monsters we have ever seen. I struggled with even a smaller one!"
I looked back to him and responded, "That's near where the baker who sells the best bread in town is, with the cream in the center. We can't just let them destroy that place! Besides I got a weapon now apparently, so I might as well use it. Having no weapon never stopped me from going outside, so why now, since I have one, should I not help fight the people who protect us everyday? Besides we owe that old baker for helping us. You can stay here if you want. You already experienced enough for two days."
I started back running. For some reason my body felt a bit lighter. Before I knew it though, I heard feet moving towards me, and I automatically knew who it was. Liam called out, "Looks like I have to go since you would die if I don't, and I really need someone to talk to on rainy days."
I laughed and proclaimed, "Then let's kick their asses together, and go to the capital and get into the hunters. Then we will be able to hunt these things on a daily basis, and finally be able to see the rest of the world!"
Liam was always like this. He is super timid and shy, and he is always depressed and scared. I can't blame him though. Who could? After everything he has been through, I'm surprised he is still sane. Both of his parents died when he was four years old to a monster attack on the outer edges of the city. Because even though the walls are there, the reality is that it's just merely a buffer for the monster to delay the inevitable. He came to live with my parents and I after that. Bad luck just seemed to follow him though, as my parents died a year later the same way. I don't blame him though, I accepted the reality that it happens when my uncle died that way, but when my parents died my hatred for the monsters grew insurmountable. I realized what Liam has been through, and I no longer have pity for him. I have empathy for him, and know what it feels like. Instead of his way of coping of being afraid of them though, I had the opposite emotion of wanting to kill them all and take back what is ours.

We went to live with some family friends after that, near the outer edges. They treated us horribly. They constantly beat us, starved us, and even brought in prostitutes home while saying, "This is what you have to do to keep the human race alive."
They chained them up most times to keep them from running away. I'll always remember their screams of agony while I embraced Liam, and tried to block it out and go to sleep. That wasn't the worst thing though. That wasn't the thing that made Liam and I leave. We still valued a roof over our heads and food, so we attempted to ignore it. Besides we seemed to be eating a lot better than everybody else. When we came back to the house when we were 13 though, was when it all changed. We walked in that rickety old shack, and we found out exactly what we had been eating. We saw them chopping up a human hand, and placing it in a pot. We were horrified. Shock ensued. We ran and ran, until we couldn't run anymore. We both threw up. What had we done? I was freaking out. Why would people do that to each other? I finally realized then that people could be as bad as monsters. I looked over at Liam, and realized he was freaking out more than me. I quickly put on a brave face a consoled him. I told him we were going to go take the hunters exam when we are 15, and we are going to take back what is ours. We will never have to worry about these kind of people again, and if we ever come across them we will give them what they deserve. That was when we made a promise to train, and be the strongest.

We wandered around town begging after that. There wasn't anything else we could do since we were so young. One day though that old baker took us in. His wife died in one of the monster attacks, but he still had a daughter named Lily he loved dearly. She seemed to take a liking to Liam. Which isn't surprising most girls do, with his jet black hair, green eyes, fair skin, athleticism, and magic power. Me on the other hand having just black curly hair, blue eyes, rough skin, no magic abilities, and just muscle definition. That old baker made it tough for us, and we didn't get along, but I feel like we are family now.
We finally made it to the monsters, and they were even bigger in person. This was going to be tough.
