《Fox Squadron》Chapter 13-Eric

Eric reflected back on the last week. It had fallen to him to find a space on the station that fulfilled all the needs for Mia's and Melissa's training turned out to be a lot harder than they had first thought it would be. This was because the room would need to act as a Foshen as well as a mockup of the room the summit would be held in. Which didn't sound too hard except it took Lady Nirva three day to find a room that they could make work for the summit and the word Foshen apparently didn't translate. Fortunately they managed to find a room just in time. Something that had only been possible because of the Terran girl Evy, who had started eating meals with him so she could ask questions about Frayin culture. She had even had a place they could use and the only thing she asked for in return was to be allowed to watch.
The room she had secured was called a ballroom and was normally rented out for various events. The reason the words hadn't, translated had to do with the Tarran's incredible lack of efficiency and practicality. As it so happened they had split the uses of a Foshen between three different types of rooms: a great hall, ballroom and a throne room. Colson had apparently laughed before finally agreeing when Michael complained about how stupid it was. This appeared to be one of the mysteries of the Terrans.
It had actually become a hobby of his to look into the growing list of mysteries regarding the Tarrans. This was the primary reason he spent so much of his free time with Evy. It did take a little to get here talking though as she was very reserved and shy. First he did learn that she was around seventeen in Terran years, which put her around Michael's age and she lived by herself on the planet side of the section. It had taken considerably more effort and apparently a full background and security check for him to get her to tell him about what she did on the station. Which was incredibly classified so all he really got was it was called the darkroom project and she and Helena were critical to it.

Figuring out the foshen translation error wasn't the only thing they had worked out either. The word Terran was a translation error as well. It was actually supposed to be the word Earth which meant ground. A funny name for a planet to be sure. More interestingly though was that Tarrans were actually called humans. According to Evy it had taken over a year for anyone to even notice the errors. At which point they had spread so far it would have been a nightmare to get it corrected. The had even had a good laugh about it. one thing he could say was that it the last few weeks had been entertaining.
"Eric. Are you ready?" Evy's sweet voice pulled him back out of his thoughts. She had just existed through the door heading to the darkroom with Helena's disk in hand. The door guard Sam gave her a friendly goodbye because giving Eric a strange look. Not a bad look just strange. For his part Eric turned his attention to Evy and ignored the guard.
In typical fashion she was wearing a completely different outfit from the one he had last seen her in. Not that the cute blue and white patterned sundress she had on was unappealing. It was, in his opinion, a rather wonderful improvement to the blue jeans and green blouse she had previously worn. Bit he did wonder just how many outfits did she own?
Frayins females usually only owned three or four outfits and all of them were fairly practical, with short skerts or loose fitting slacks that were easy to move. She seemed to switch between long dresses and tight fitting jeans. Which was odd, but he was sure he hadn't seen her ware the same out fit twice as well. However it was a question that would have to wait. As Evy was currently looking at him with her head cocked to the side in a very Frayin like gesture.
"Ya I'm ready.:" He said taking her hand so he could guide her to the ballroom a habit hi had picked up from walking her to her destinations after they ate lunch together. Really he wasn't even sure why he did it but Evy never seemed to mind.

"So what's on the agenda today?" She asked in her usual inquisitive manner. "Lets see." He thought back to the plane he and Michael had puttl together. "I believe we are doing formal dancing." He had intended to discuss the topic in the same way they usually do. However Evy had come to a very sudden and abrupt stop causing her had to be pulled out of his.
When he quickly spun around he had expected to see some unknown assailant grabbing her. He had even half way drawn his sword in the slpit second I took him to get eyes back on her. But there was no assailant. She was just standing there in deep thought with Helena's disk pressed to her chest. She seemed for just a second have a whispered conversation with Helena before coming to some kind of decision.
She gave a quick nod before looking up to address Eric. "I'd like to drop by my place before we head to the ballroom. If that would be ok?" She was quite timid with the second half and her cheeks flushed a little. He wasn't sure why she was embarrassed they had plenty of time so he didn't see a reason they couldn't. "Sure we have plenty of time before the lesson is supposed to start."
It took about ten minutes to reach her place on the planet side of the station. When they initially arrived Evy hesitated at the door for a moment before finally deciding to invite him in. He tried to tell her he was fine waiting outside but she eventually insisted. Let him into the common area of her apartment. As soon as they were inside she placed Helena's disk down on a small low table and went through a door at the back of the room on the right wall.
The common area was a fifteen by fifteen ft room. There was only one other door in the room besides the one Evy had gone through. The room itself was sparsely decorated with only a small couch, a few bookshelves and the table Helena was set on. However the most eye-catching thing in the room was the large ten foot wide window at the back. Beyond it was what could only be described as a magnificent view of the blue white and green planet below. A massive wild swirling cloud formation was slowly moving across the bright blue water below. He could just make out a large orbital elevator breaking through the massive mesmerizing storm.
Helena's figure appeared from the holo emitter on the top of her disk. "It's quite beautiful isn't it." Her figure looked at him before staring back out the window. "Even with all the power the Terrans can create it pales in comparison to such forces of nature." Eric could only nod in agreement as he watched the storm.
A moment later the door Evy stepped back into the common area. "Sorry for the wait." Looking to her, Eric found himself momentarily stunned. She had changed clothes again but this was something special. It was a short, red, smooth look, strapless dress that had a beautiful silky gloss finish to it that shimmered in the light as she moved.
"I- I hope you don't mind but I was hoping to be able to join the lesson but." She bashfully looked away before continuing. "I kinda forgot to ask if I could before we got here."
"A sure. I've always said you're welcome to participate anytime." Eric’s mouth felt dry as he answered. "We should get going or we'll be late." With that they made their way to the ballroom. Thought the two of them had a strange feeling that they had missed something important.
Helena only gave a sigh as she watched them leave. "So how long do you think it will take those two to figure it out?" Nayomi's voice came over the entercom just before her figure appeared of a holo emitter on the other side of the room. "Probably not till someone points it out." Helena answered. They didn't need to look at each other; it wasn't as if the holographic figures were their bodies. But they still did and from her disk she could see Nayomi's whimsical little smile and she agreed. It was so fun to watch them grow and she couldn't wait to see what happened next.

The Stars Have Eyes
The universe was a vast, empty, dark, and uncaring place. Then life happened, and the universe was changed forever. Only a teeny-tiny bit, but definitely different. Then again, the universe changes a teeny-tiny bit every second of every day. For instance, if someone were to get off the couch and randomly drink a glass of milk? Bam! One less glass of milk in the universe. Changed forever. Well, excluding any time-travel shenanigans, but anyone who puts a big old hole in the time-space continuum just to un-drink a glass of milk should really reevaluate their priorities. Unless, of course, they were attempting to prevent some massive catastrophe vis-a-vis said glass of milk. Such a scenario is by no means impossible, as one should never underestimate the importance of calcium. Another important tip for any life forms out there is to keep things in perspective. Some look at the vastness of creation in relation to themselves and go, ‘Man, this sucks!’ These people really need to narrow their focus. Sure, they will never affect anything happening on the other end of the galaxy, but so what? That’s way the heck over there, where it doesn’t matter. Therefore, in order to maintain a healthy mindset, it is important to narrow one’s perspective to the things and people that affect them, and that they can affect in turn. But what happens if one is an unfathomable cosmic being from beyond the veil of reality? What happens when such an existence is capable of influencing entire swathes of the universe just by its presence? A creature such as Magh'rathlak the Observer? That particular entity is only about average as far as reality-warping creatures from the dawn of time go, so its influence over the fabric of reality is rather limited. And it still struggles to keep things in perspective. That, among other things, is why it decided to narrow its worldview a bit by compressing the maddening vastness of its being into a single corporeal form. Magh'rathlak had never tried such a feat, but that wasn't about to stop it. After all, how hard could being human possibly be?
