《Fox Squadron》CHAPTER 12 - Michael

Michael never got the opportunity to look into Tiara's background. Mostly because as soon as they got back Kira was waiting for them with a datapad for each of them. Michael's pad had two sets of orders. The one from his father wasn't a military order or even an order from father to son. It was one of, ruler to subject. He was to act as his older sister, Mia's adviser for an upcoming summit regarding legal issues around the growing Zeno, Frayin and otherwise, presence on Torus Station. The other from Admiral Harket, asked him as a member of the Liaison Squadron to investigate a ship called the The Saraphel as well as a Frayin named Reny Tenya and then reported his findings to The Imperial Princesses Mia Orizeky's advisor. The only other thing on the datapad was a note from Lieutenant Colson saying all members of Fox Squadron would reserve special assignments over the next three weeks. It was all rather cut and dry though he was sure someone found it funny that he had to deliver the report of his investigation to himself.
It wasn't till he finished reading that he realized Kira was still standing in front of him. She didn't immediately respond to his questioning look. She merely reached out and took the datapad from him. Then they both looked towards Tiara, who looked to be rereading what was on the pad. When she finished reading she typed something into it and a small pop sound came from within before a wisp of smoke started to slip out of a seam. She then handed the now useless device to Kira.
She then took a deep breath before slowly letting it out, as if she were trying to compose herself. "Right!" She declared with some resolve that had not previously been present before. She then turned to face Michael and grabbed the hem of her uniform skirt and gave a cute curtsy. "Your Majesty." She then pivoted to her left and walked out the door, leaving him and Kira to watch her back as she left. That had all happened a week ago.
The first problem he had to deal with was Mia. The facts were that she had been brought up in hiding as a commoner. There had never been a need for her to learn noble etiquette or proper procedure for diplomatic engagements. Fortunately Eric was the son of an important Sector Governor this meant he was fully trained in regards to diplomatic procedures and at least partially trained in the proper etiquette. The only stipulations he had been given to receive Eric’s help was that they would also have to teach Melissa at the same time. Which was something he was fairly sure he was going to be asked to do at some point anyway.

Then there was The Saraphel and the girl Reny who was injured in an incident involving a Calotas plant. It turned out Reny had been exiled for, among other things, smuggling. According to her she was just supposed to pick up a package from The Saraphel and deliver it to a drop point. When pressed the only thing she would say was that it wasn't her deal and that was why she had opened the package before delivery. Unfortunately she wasn't much help after that as she seemed more interested in flirting with him than answering questions.
Just as he finished putting all of this into a report Kira and Kell excitedly barged into the liaison office and made straight for where he was sitting at his desk. Kira slapped her hands down on his desk and leaned forward as she started to talk with quite a bit of excitement in her voice "Michael! You have gotta come with us!"
"You're not going to believe what we just saw!" Kell added with a little more restraint than his sister. "What." Was about all he got out before Kira reached over the desk and practically pulled him over the desk, sending a small stack of data pads to the floor as she dragged him out the door and into the common area. At which point he understood exactly what all the excitement was about.
Standing in the center of the common area was a woman with short curly silver hair with matching fur and eyes. She was currently with Ambassador Siva and Admiral Harket who appeared to be giving her a tour. But that wasn't what had caught Michael's eye nor was it had gotten the twins so excited. Standing behind the woman was a girl wearing a traditional sleeveless backless maids dress and just so happened to look exactly like Tiara.
"What is Tiara doing in that dress?" Kira whispered her question. Probably because she wanted to make sure the girl they were looking at wouldn't hear them. Not an undue precaution given how good Tiara's hearing seemed to be. The only problem was that Michael was absolutely positive that this girl wasn't Tiara. There wasn't any real reason for him to not believe so. Even from here he couldn't see any difference. There was even the same light little scar in the exact same place on her lower back. The one that was only really visible if you knew to look.
"Eeek!" The sudden squeak from Kira just managed to draw his attention away from the strange girl. What he found though when he looked back to the twins left him momentarily confused. Both of them were now standing bolt upright and at attention. When he looked back towards the group the girl was standing with he found out why. The woman had begun to walk quickly yet gracefully towards them with the Ambassador and Admiral scrambling to follow.

The woman walked right up to him all the while ignoring the exasperated attempts by the Ambassador to get her to stop. "Your Majesty." She said with a light curtsy. The girl who had also seemingly appeared just behind her also gave a slight bow. "Nirva, it is good to see you again. How have you been?" Him greeting the woman by name looked like it caught the Ambassador and the twins off guard. It wasn't all that surprising that he would have known who she was, though the fact that the two of them had met before was probably a little odd.
Nirva was a member of the Silversteen family which was the only other family in the empire capable of using spirit fire. This meant that in terms of succession to the throne only the Imperial family superseded them. Even then it was only the first born of that generation in his family that set the order and only those born after that person and were the same gender would be in line. Because members of the Silversteen family were treated as relative equals to the Imperial family the existence of any family members in the line of succession are hidden until the current heir of the throne turned sixteen. Something that was done for complex political reasons he didn't quite understand. Nirva however wasn't in the current line of succession an had actually been the one to train him on how to use spirt fire.
"I have been well. I hear you have been gettinginto some trouble sense we last spoke. " She responded in the same polite tone she always did, though her eyes did convey something of a look as if to say she knew somethinghe didn't. The conversation didn't go any farther though as Ambassador Siva arrived before he could ask what she meant. "My Lady please don't run off like that." Her golden blond hair a little frazzled. "Ofcourse, silly me." Nirva then turned to the girl behind her. Once again drawing his eyesback to her. "Please see if you can get some time scheduled so that I can catch up with Michael." The girl gave a quick little bow " I shall do my best your Ladyship." Nirva seemed happy enough with this answer and turned to join the Ambassador after give a simple farewell to him.
He however was still focused on the strange girl. Who caught his eye for just a moment as she turned to follow. He was surprised by the intensity of those dark brown eyes. It was as if she was appraising him trying to determine everything about him in that single glance. He simply couldn't look away even as she finally broke the connection of their eyes and rejoined the group.
"So are you done makeing eyes at my sister?" Tiara's voice was like a slap in the face with ice cold water. Turning around he found her standing not even a foot away from him. To make matters worse he could just make out her sister's giggling.
"Wait! What?!?" "How!?!" And with that any doubt that Kira and Kell had thought the other girl was Tiara vanished. He could just make out them looking quickly between the two, in his peripheral vision. But Tiara didn’t let something as small as having an audience stop her from teasing him. "Well why don't you tell me. Who is prettier, me or Trina?" It was nice to finally have a name for her sister but he could already tell she wasn't going to simply drop this. "You're both identical." He said with about as straight of a face as was possibly in this situation.
Her eyes fluttered and with a knowing smile she leaned forward and whispered so quietly that he almost missed what she said. She then stepped back with a little twirl, a click of her heel and a bow. "Your Majesty. I Tiara Fairsteen am here to inform you that by order of Her Majesty Queen Ammala Silversteen my sister Trina Fairsteen, a maid in Her Majesty's service' will be acting as the Imperial Princesses personal Maid till the end of the summit." After delivering the decree she turned on her heels and looked back over her shoulder at them. "Now you have an hour before Mia’s lesson so let's get something to eat."
It was at this moment he knew she had been sirius. Those words she had whispered hadn't been her just teasing him or playing around. Those words that still ringed in his ears. The ones she had chosen to only share with him. "Well then if you can tell the difference, I'm going to have to make sure we are bonded together."

Characters grow their powers with explicit stat blocks presented right in the text, including levels, attribute scores, and unlockable skill trees. Experience is accumulated by battling enormous monsters the size of buildings. Political intrigue and romance elements ramp up as the series progresses. I originally wrote this story after playing Monster Hunter with my niece. She was 12 at the time, already an avid reader, and wanted to read my other published books. I'm a licensed psychotherapist specializing in severe trauma so I tend toward darker fiction. I told her my usual books are too brutal for her but I'd write her something special. The result was this series, which has been praised by both teens and adults for its depth and universal appeal. It begins with an emphasis on cultural elements because I consulted with a trained anthropologist to craft this neolithic setting down to exacting social detail. After these opening chapters, it rapidly shifts to an action-packed adventure. The first 3 books are fully written as of November 2020, totalling approximately 69 chapters. The first book has been professionally edited already. The following two books require some editing which I'll do on a chapter-by-chapter basis as releases progress. I welcome reviews and comments. Writing is a passion, and reader engagement makes my labor all the sweeter.
