Chapter Three: Matthew

I hate waiting. Matthew thought as he was standing in front of a fast food chain. But if it’s her….. Suddenly, it all came back to him. Just like every time when he was alone. Before eating, watching TV and in every single thing that he does.

It’s been a month since Keiren confessed to him. Matthew would never forget that moment. It was raining that day. He was just standing on the hallway, staring at the rain and at the students going in and out of their classroom with their umbrella’s while others were just running. That was when Keiren stood next to him.

“I love you.” Keiren said.

Matthew looked on his side to see who it was. He thought that it was just Alexandria teasing him. But it was his classmate. She was always there in every basketball game he had with his old friend June. He remembered that June liked her so much.

Instead of her normal sleepy look, it was her embarrassed and reddish face that she wore.

“Why?” He asked.

“Eh...?" She tried her best to say the right words. "Remember that day when Ma’am Pelaez asked us to find a partner on MAPEH? You know, that drawing thing?”

“She asked us to find a partner to draw.” Matthew answered.

“Righty!!” She said with a high pitched voice. “I was your partner then, remember?”

Mathew did not remember but he knew that Keiren would feel bad if he did not. So, he just nodded.

“You drew an anime version of me. I still have it, look.” She took a piece of paper from her bag. “See? That’s your sign down there.” It’s not even crumpled.

That’s when he remembered.

“I do remember drawing that.”

“I was cute in this drawing... so... I thought that you thought of me as… you know…” Keiren’s white face turned red. “…cute.”

In fact, all of Matthew’s drawings were cute anime girls. Even though she’s not that ‘cute’ for him, (even though she is one of the famous girls in school due to her looks…) he just decided to draw her like that. He just nodded again.

“So…. What do you say…?” Keiren asked as she stared at her shoes.

Keiren is actually a very energetic girl. Small squinted eyes that makes her look sleepy despite of her lively character. Long dark hair. Always have a pretty smile on her face. No one ever saw her frown. Not even once. It was actually the first time that she was quiet while with someone.

Even though Matthew knew what Keiren was talking about, he decided to play dumb. He did not want her to think that he is assuming. “About what?” he said.

“About… my… m-m-my… c-c-c-c-confession…” Keiren is dying from embarrassment.

“I don’t know you yet.”

“Then… we’ll get to know each other!”

“I’m boring.”

“No you’re not! You’re awesome!”

Matthew pretended to think for a while. “What do you want me to do?” He asked.

“Be my boyfriend!!” Keiren said it too loud that almost every student near them heard of it.

Keiren’s face flushed. She hid her blushing face with her hands and tried to look at Matthew. Matthew was just staring at her. He himself was embarrassed by what Keiren did. But he just thought that he should play it cool since he is the guy. Like what he have always done. He paused for a while. What does she want? He thought. At times like these, I should say something romantic, right? But none came to his mind.

A few seconds had passed and Keiren decided to break the silence since she wanted to hear Matthew’s answer. ”Please say something….” She was so embarrassed that she is already thinking how much it would cost to have a plastic surgery so that no one would remember what she just did.

“Okay.” Matthew answered.

And since then, that whole month of November. The two could not be separated. They go to school together, sit next to each other during classes, spends breaks together and go home together. On weekends, they would go on dates. Whenever they were apart, they would just send text messages to each other. Somehow, their relationship were more than lovers already. They depended on each other. Like they are already a part of each other. Kids these days were like that. Having relationships at an early stage and getting pregnant while they’re at it. But Matthew and Keiren were different. Even though the reason that ignited their love was stupid, somehow, it ended as true love. A love that no one could just break. That was what he thought.

Matthew forgets his hardships while he is with Keiren. He was an orphan. He was supposed to be aborted due to the reason that his father ran away from his mother the moment that she told his father that she was pregnant. Then, he was adopted by a young couple who couldn’t have their own son. His father who adopted him loved him like his own son. The same could not be said with his mother. The only reason why his step mom wanted to have a son is to have someone take care of them when they are old. Things were just fine. Until his step father died. That’s when everything started. His step mother told him that he is just adopted. And he owes his life to her. Since then, everything about him changed. He never laughed. He never smiled. He didn’t even know who he was. All he knew back then that he doesn’t own his life.

‘A guy who wants to be loved met a girl who needs someone to love’. That’s what he thought about the two of them. And it meant a lot to him.

“Hey.” Matthew said as he saw Keiren walking in his direction.

At this point, Keiren should’ve already shouted “Yoowwwww!!!” at him. But her facial expression is different from the one that she has.

“Something wrong?” He asked.

“E-E-E-….” Keiren almost forgot how to speak as tears ran from her eyes. “Everything!” That was the word the she used to start her short speech. “You…” Her tears continued to flow. “You love me too much! You’re too clingy! You always send messages at me! Always staring at me! Give yourself a break, will ya? I mean, look at you! You’re too ugly for me! Uggggglllllyyy!!!! Geez. You should know that I’m out of your league. But you didn’t, right? You should’ve died in a pit somewhere. Instead, you’re fucking here!”

People passing by were staring at them. And then pretending to ignore them. But in truth, they actually want to watch the show.

“You told me…” Matthew remembered it all. Especially the first time that Keiren told him that she loved him. “You told me that you love me…”

“You believed that shit?” Keiren laughed while her tears continues to trickle down her cheeks. “It was a lie! A lie you piece of shit!” She scoffed. “Look at you now. How does it feels to be played like this, huh?”

“I loved you because you told me that you love me. But now that you told me that you don-“

Keiren stopped him. “Enough with the drama, lover boy.” She scoffed again.

He doesn’t know what to feel. “So… you’re breaking up with me?”

“Hah, yeah. You couldn’t even call that a relationship.” Her tears continued to flow.

“Did I do something wrong?” He asked.

“Yeah.”

“Then please tell me.”

Keiren paused for a while. “It is because…” She grasped for air. “YOU’RE FUCKING UGLY!!!!” Then left while laughing with tears still flowing on her eyes.

Matthew just stood there. He doesn’t even know what to do now. The girl that she loved just left her. She played with my feelings….. but... why is she crying?

“I am yours as you are mine, forever.” He remembered that Keiren always say those words. Everyday.

“Don’t believe her. She’s a liar.” A short girl told her.

He stared at her.

It was a short pale girl with short black hair matched with bright blue eyes and small pursed lips. She wore a white SkullCandy headphones on her neck and a black tank top matched with black shorts with white hi-cut Converse shoes. On her right wrist, it was fill with accessories while on the right, a white G-Shock watch. With one look, you could easily tell that she’s not from this country.

Matthew stared at her again. Somehow, she finds her face familiar.

The girl then leaned her head towards him and said “And you’re not ugly.” And then walked away.
