"Meh. It's fine." Mindy mumbled, playing with her eggs. "Well, at least you know where you stand on that subject." The man who had sat next to her mumbled. She didn't bother responding, taking another bite of egg. "Sorry, I'm late!" Nebula sat down next to Mindy, laughing sheepishly. "Don't worry about it. You're not missing much." Mindy responded. "Oh, right. This is Victor. He's a dick, so ignore him." "Aw. Then it's nowhere near as fun." He retorted before finishing his toast. "Alright, well, see you losers some other time." Victor got up and left the two girls. "Jeez, he's a peach." Nebula said, shoving a peach in her mouth. "No way, they have peaches? They didn't when I went through." Mindy sighed. Nebula handed her one, patting her friend's back. "You're a peach, Neb." Mindy smiled before devouring the sweet fruit.
"So, there's gonna be a night watch for ranks B and A. I figured you wanted in." Nebula explained. "You know me so well." Mindy pushed her empty tray to the side, rubbing her eyes. "Any ideas on how to kill time till then?" Nebula smile at Mindy's question. "Only books." "Sleep it is, then." Mindy faked a yawn, as the two left the dining area.
…
"Mindy, get up." Neb lightly slapped her friend's cheek. "Aw. Why?" "Night watch, remember?" "Mmrf." She rolled off her mattress, pushing herself off the ground. "Fine." The room for the A Rank's was significantly smaller than the other rank's areas. While it was true that there were far fewer a ranks compared to even b ranks, the main reason was that most a rank heroes were camped out along the border of the two cities that made up the area (Quillston and Rickton). Considering the areas already shaky relationships with the nearby cities and towns, a demon invasion was probably not gonna lead to their being rescued. They only had each other, so as many hands as possible needed to be on deck.

The girls got in line with the other a and b rank heroes, looking for vengeance. At the front stood a woman in black and Monika, going through the lines to check the identities of those who showed up. Once everyone had been checked, the two women returned to the front. "A thank you is owed to every single one of you. For coming here, knowing that the chance of your lives continuing past this point is even somewhat unlikely. So, thank you. With that said, we're gonna need you to give your all should you come across even one of those things. This isn't like any of those requests you took in the past. Any demon you see could be an omen of a thousand more, at the least. Never break formation if you can help it, and always have each other's backs. You will be the models to those below you. So show them what you can do, got it?!" The main hall was filled with cheering.

Zorian is a teenage mage of humble birth and slightly above-average skill, attending his third year of education at Cyoria's magical academy. He is a driven and irritable young man, consumed by a desire to ensure his own future and free himself of the influence of his family, whom he resents for favoring his brothers over him. Consequently, he has no time for pointless distractions or paying attention to other people's problems. As it happens, time is something he is about to get plenty of. On the eve of the Cyoria's annual summer festival, he is killed and brought back to the beginning of the month, just before he was about to take a train to Cyoria. Suddenly trapped in a time loop with no clear end or exit, Zorian will have to look both within and without to unravel the mystery before him. And he does have to unravel it, for the time loop hadn't been made for his sake and dangers lurk everywhere... Repetition is the mother of learning, but Zorian will have to first make sure he survives to try again - in a world of magic, even a time traveler isn't safe from those who wish him ill. ********************************** If anyone is interested, I have a story-related worldbuilding site that can be found here. I don't update it as often as I should, but there is a fair amount of content there already. It also contains a page with all the fanart, fan translations, audio books and the like - you can reach it directly by clicking this link. I have a patreon account for those kind people that want to give me money. It also contains info for those who want to donate via paypal. The story was originally posted on fictionpress, back in 2011. When I reached chapter 91, I started uploading the story to RoyalRoad, one chapter per day. The story will continue to be updated on fictionpress as well as here, and can be reached by clicking on this link if somebody is interested, though at this point there is nothing there that isn't also on RoyalRoad. ********************************** The cover you see on the side has been made by a fellow RoyalRoad user Sydorow. Having subdued its surrounding enemies, the former Sulic Empire is faced with unrest brewing from within. Society is torn in two. The reigning mentalists constantly persecute the subjugated elementals under the pretence of curbing the explosive potential of their destructive powers. Meanwhile, schemes and political interests clash as different groups within the Governance military elite vie for control. And in the shadows, Sulic’s old enemies have been lying in wait a long time, looking for the first sign of weakness to make their move. Against this backdrop, two ordinary individuals fight to maintain stability from opposing sides: a low ranking telepathic recruit with nothing to his name but good intentions, and an unregistered elemental contractor with a murky past. Can they reconcile their differences and help steer Sulic away from tearing itself apart? Windwalker explores themes of societal struggle and self-discovery. Book One: Rising Wind Kal has trained to be a soldier his entire life. His days are simple, and his duties clear: enforce the rules, upkeep the peace, and most important — police the elementals. If they step out of line, the Governance system corrects it. But when Kal encounters a young boy whom he suspects might be an illegal earthborn, he can’t bring himself to report him. Despite his training and the advice of friends, he decides to help him onto what he believes is the right path. This choice lands him in more trouble than he bargained for, and he soon discovers that the veneer the Governance is built upon an ugly and crumbling foundation.
