"Vinnie, how's it looking out there?"
Vinnie was hesitant to answer. "There's a lot of damage. At least a third of the population is gone."
"Damnit, Vinnie. How the hell did this happen?"
"If I knew, it wouldn't have happened."
"Well, fuck. What now? For all we know, those two are dead."
"Highly unlikely. At least, as long as he wasn't cornered."
"You think there's even a chance he wasn't?"
"He was your choice! Don't start bitching now because you made chose him without even giving it a moment's thought."
"Fine, fine. Let's face the real issue here; we have no idea what's gonna happen now. How could a low ranking god do this?"
"It doesn't matter. We just have to be on our toes. Don't lose your cool, kay?"
"Alright. Observe and stay out of sight. I'll...ponder our situation."
"Goodbye."
…
"Alright everyone, find your beds and then come back to me!" The man in front of the large group of people yelled. David gulped, watching everyone else start moving around, and he did the same. After some searching, he found his bed. It had a thin mattress and a green blanket, with a little sticky note that had his name on it. He was still having a hard time believing it. His home was gone, destroyed by the demons. Now he was stuck living in a random corridor of Victorian hall. Though he had to admit he was better off than the kids who were here, parents either missing or killed in some of the most gruesome ways possible. Everyone here was 12 or under, save for him and a man with a scruffy neck, looking to be about 35.
"Hey, guess we're neighbors." The man grinned at David, holding out a hand. "Names Finland. You?" David took his hand and shook it. "David." The man's smile was weirdly infectious. David smiled back. "So, you lost your place? Sorry, mate. That's a real shame." The man offered his condolences. "Thanks. At least I have a place to lay my feet down." The two sat in silence for a moment. The man pulled out a tin container, popped open the top and offered David a mint. "Oh, thanks." He took one and popped it in his mouth. "So, you look pretty young. Why aren't you in a higher rank?" David was hesitant at first, but he felt something compelling him. "Well, I'm a pathetic support type who can only defend himself. Even then, I'm not that good at it. There, happy?" David covered his mouth, trying to understand why he'd just said all that. "Oh, don't worry. That's just my power. Compelling the truth." The man laughed. "Was that mint-" "No, I just have a lot of them weighing down my pockets."

David sighed. "Please, don't do that to me again." The man promised. "So, I guess that's why you're in F-rank?" David questioned. "Yeah. Turns out a guy who can make people tell the truth isn't very useful when killing monsters. Who'd a thought?" The two shared a laugh before a voice started talking through an intercom, telling everyone to stand in front of their beds. They did as told, and two men went down both lines, handing each person a plastic card with all of their information on it. The two men returned to the front, where a woman in a fully black outfit stood. "As you all know, last night, an estimated total of five million demons escaped from hell. After some calculations, it appears that 1/3rd of our population, taking in the dead from the surrounding cities, have been killed. Homes have been destroyed and stores have been put out of business. Even then, it seems that only 3,456 demons were killed before evacuating from the cities. For the children in this audience, I can only offer you the highest of condolences for the loss of your families. As for the few people here of a higher age, we apologize for the loss of your residences, and for everyone here, we unfortunately must ask something of you. As of this time, until the demons have been taken care of, you will be taken care of and protected, due to your low ranking. However, we will also be training you, turning you all into powerful warriors to destroy the demon population. Even if you are a weakling with a no good power, even if you can only count to thirty, it matters not. By the time the demons are gone, I'll have turned you into warriors not to be tested. Do you all understand?" Everyone was silent, unsure of how to respond. "These cards you hold will be important for discerning your identity from that of a demon, some of which have been proven to have shapeshifting capabilities. Anything else you must know, you will be told in the future. For now, relax everyone. For this moment may be the last that I can guarantee your safety. So, please, savor it."
