《The Misfits of Alter》Chapter 6.3- October 6th

He couldn't sleep. Not with his brain as active as it was. "If I hadn't been as fast as I was…" The only reason he was still alive, and that she was still alive, was because he happened to be fast enough. Not because of his power, not because he was legitimately powerful, but because he was lucky. The thought gnawed at David, and it wasn't leaving his mind anytime soon. After ten minutes of contemplation, he put on his glasses, powered them up, and opened the app menu. From there he opened the books app and tapped one at random. 'Hopefully, this puts me down.' He thought, letting his eyes pass over the words.

He'd gone through about five pages when he noticed the two people standing in the corridor's entranceway. He felt his muscles tensing, but he tried to ignore them. A message popped up on his display. David's lips formed a frown.

'It's Charles. Get over here.'

David pushed off his mattress, starting at the two figures with pure apathy, or maybe annoyance before he made his way past the sleeping children. The hall's floor was a smooth marble, and his shoes had hard bottoms, so he was often making a lot of noise whenever he was looking for quests. Thankfully, he was wearing socks at the time, so this was a non-issue. After passing the last two kids, he made silent hops over to the two and stopped right in front of them, crossing his arms. "Good seeing you again, David. A real treat." Charles said, smiled, and tipped his hat.

"Sorry, I've been a little busy to work on your project," David admitted. "Honestly, it would've been nice to know this was gonna happen," David added. "I apologize. Things aren't going to plan. Don't worry, though, we're adjusting." V admitted, doing her best to keep from passing out. "What's up? You look sick." V gave David an unconvincing smile. "Oh, I'm fine. Perhaps a little sleepy." She looked away, saying nothing else. Charles gave her a concerned glance but returned his attention to David. "We need to be connected to you at all times. Calls aren't safe enough, especially since we can't be sure of the outcome anymore. So, here." Charles placed a Bluetooth earbud in David's hand. "Don't worry about charging it. It's powered by magic. Strong enough that only a being with power far beyond any human could listen in."

David examined the tiny object, mumbled thanks, and put it in his pocket. "So, got anything else for me?" Charles rubbed his chin. "We need to talk about your pow-" Someone gripped David's shoulder. "Well, hello there." Finland's voice came from behind him. Charles seemed unaffected by the arrival. "Hello there. I'd be happy to make your acquaintance in a moment, but at the moment, I'm talking to my friend here." Once Charles finished, his face turned to shock when he felt a cool blade against his neck. Finland held the blade with the unflinching pose of a man with unending experience. "A man in a fancy suit talking to an F rank? Yeah, that ain't suspicious." Charles chuckled. "Buddy, you don't want to do this." Finland seemed unaffected. "If this is so important, come at visiting hours, not when he needs to regain his strength. Your lady friend should take that advice to heart, it seems." Finland finished, watching the two closely. Charles and V shared a look, and they left without another word.

"Uh, you didn't have to do that," David spoke up after Finland placed his sword in his sheath. "A friend wouldn't bother a sleeping warrior. Not even gonna mention how sketchy that guy was. Just be careful kid, otherwise, you might not like where you end up." Finland walked off, leaving him alone at the entranceway. "My power." He felt a pain in his chest.

Mindy fell onto her mattress, groaning. "I only went to not be bored, and yet I am still bored." Mindy complained. "Well, at least that means they aren't leaving the forest. We can be happy about that, right?" Nebula attempted to cheer her up. "I guess." Mindy sighed. "Tell me, Neb, how shall I pass the time?" Nebula looked up at the ceiling, thinking. "Why not go bother that guy from last night. David, right?" Mindy grinned. "Nebula, that is an awfully wonderful idea." Nebula laughed awkwardly. "I hope you know I'm not a proponent of bullying." Before she could realize it, Mindy was gone. "Sorry kid." Nebula collapsed back onto her mattress.
