Adriana P.O.V.

In the end I settled for a loose white sundress with a black bow around the waist. I sat down at the vanity and stared blankly at the different beauty products. It stuck me that as much as I had always wanted to buy and wear make-up I had no idea how to put it on. I placed my forehead on the vanity and groaned. What seventeen year old doesn't know how to put on make-up?

"Adriana...?"

Lucas's quiet voice came from the doorway and he knocked lightly. I looked up with tears in my eyes. Lucas frowned and rushed over to me.

"Oh darling what's wrong?"

I felt my lower lip tremble slightly and I felt embarrassed as I whispered,

"I have never had my own make-up before. I don't know how to put it on."

Lucas frowned and silently pulled up a chair up to the vanity beside me. He picked up a stick of black eyeliner and lifted it up to his eye.

"You put it on like this. Don't push to hard but with enough pressure to mark the lid."

Lucas turned to me with eyeliner around his laughing brown eyes. I giggled and pointed at his eyes, trying not to burst out laughing. Lucas frowned in mocking insult. He jumped up from his chair and placed his hand on his hip and did a ridiculously provocative pose. He pouted,

"Don't you think I look pretty?"

I giggled and assured him,

"You look very pretty Lucas. Can you please finish showing me please?"

Lucas showed me how to put on eyeliner, eyeshadow, foundation, power, blush, mascara, lip liner, and lip stick. In the end he looked like a Barbie doll and I was holding my stomach rolling on the ground with laughter. Lucas was laughing too and flopped onto the ground beside me. That was how Alyssa found us.

"Adriana, Mister Jake will see you n-"

She froze and stared at us, her dark eyes stretched wide with surprise. The tips of her lips quirked up into an amused smile. She had a little blush on her cheeks as she stared at Lucas. Alyssa tore her gaze away from Lucas and told me politely,

"Mister Jake will see you now."

I hauled myself to my feet and looked into a mirror. I actually looked pretty. Not sexy just plain pretty. Lucas had done my make-up and put my hair in a twist. I still had my glasses on and was barefoot. I had always hated wearing shoes. I waved Alyssa and Lucas good-bye and went off in search of the dining room.

I puffed my cheeks in frustration as I opened and closed an uncountable amount of doors. Why did a house need so many rooms?! I peered my head into what looked like a club. I rolled my eyes and nearly slammed the door. Who needs a personal club?! I suddenly felt hands snake around my waist and I felt a deep chuckle vibrate against my back. I stiffened.

"Lost Bookworm? Library is to the right."

I frowned and wiggled out of his arms even though my heart told me to go back. I was angry and I scoffed,

"It's not my fault you have such a ridiculous house. A put-put course? Seriously who the hell needs a personal put-put course?"

Jake chuckled and grabbed my arm, sending tingles racing up my arm. My heart pounded slightly and I found myself gazing up at his face. He really was perfect. Jake pulled me all the way to the dining room. I lost track of how many turns and stairs we went up and down. When we reached the creme spotless dining room I threw my hands up in the air.

"This is house is like a flippin' maze! I'm going to get lost and die in your personal put-put course and you will never find me before the rats eat me."

Jake only chuckled and pulled out my chair. Jake wasn't really talking a lot. I peered at him thoughtfully as he saw across from me. He looked stressed and he ran his hand through his black hair, making it messy and spiky. I suppressed a giggle when a piece of hair jutted out like a unicorn horn. Jake glared at me coldly and I jumped slightly. This wasn't the carefree Jake I saw at school! Was this the real Jake? I shivered at the thought. I didn't want to be in love with a cold-hearted bully.

"Adriana Layman."

At the sound of my name I turned to see a woman enter the room. Her presence seemed to fill up the room and her calculating eyes snapped to me. Her just looking at me made me feel inferior. She was wearing a crisp navy blue suit and her hair was in a perfect bun. She offered a thin pale hand to me.

"I am Abellalina Collins, Jake's mother."

I smiled and gave her hand a hearty shake. Mrs. Collins looked pleased and sat down next to me. Jake glared at her with open hostility.

"Why are you here, Mother?"

Mrs. Collins shrugged,

"I do apologize I was unaware you wanted to eat dinner alone with Adriana."

I felt myself blush. Jake however, looked irked by her comment.

"No," He spat at her in disgust, "I was just wondering why you were wasting your oh so PRECIOUS time here with me."

I saw hurt flare up briefly in Mrs. Collin's eyes but it was gone so quickly I couldn't be sure.

"Why, I simply wanted to meet our newest resident. Speaking of which, how are you Adriana? Is everything here satisfactory?"

The conversation quickly switched over to me and I felt flustered. I simply nodded and the mood was tense and awkward. Jake and his mother were glaring daggers at each other. Suddenly, three butlers filed into the room with large silver dishes with lids. I felt my mouth water. It smelled heavenly. The lids were pulled away to reveal a steaming meat wrapped in puff pastry. There were caramelized carrots under it and a strange vegetable mash sat next to the meat. A butler in a tuxedo poured me a glass of white wine. I grabbed his sleeve as he moved to walk away. I handed him the glass.

"Water please."

I could never bring myself to drink alcohol again. Not after what happened with Dad. Within seconds a glass of water was placed in front of me. Jake and Mrs. Collins were already eating their meals. I poked my meat in confusion and asked no one in particular,

"What is this?"

Jake and Mrs. Collins looked aghast. Jake cleared his throat and asked,

"You don't know what Beef Wellington is?"

I shook my head and took a bite. I nearly melted at the delicious meaty taste. I hurriedly gulped it down, not caring about manners anymore. Out of my feeding frenzy I heard Mrs. Collins say to a waiter,

"Take this away it is too overcooked."

I stared at her Wellington and it looked perfect to me. With my mouth still full I mumbled,

"Don't waste it. Give it here I will eat it."

Mrs. Collins frowned at me but the butler handed me the half eaten plate nonetheless. I slowly ate it, every last crumb of food and drop of sauce. By the time I was done I felt sick and sleepy. Mrs. Collins dropped her napkin on the table and walked away without saying anything. Through my droopy eyes I saw Jake smirk at me.

"Well that sure beats Ramen, Jake."

"Oh is that what bookworm's eat?"

"I'm not a bookworm stop calling me that."

I tried to speak with conviction but my voice was so sleepy and slurred it only made him chuckle. I watched as he stood up and walked over to my seat.

"Let's get you back upstairs plump Bookworm."

He slipped his arm under my legs and used his other arm to support my back. He was so warm. I snuggled closer to him and struggled to stay awake. I murmured sleepily, my voice muffled by his shirt,

"Where is Lucas...?"

Jake frowned,

"Who is Lucas?"

I yawned and stretched before curling up against him again.

"My new friend. I need him to wake me up in the morning for school."

"Lucas lives here? Is he a butler?"

"Mm-hmmm... He is a cute guy with brown hair and brown eyes."

I heard a different chuckle and I say Lucas standing in front of us.

"Good description darling. I will take her now Mister Jake."

Jake's eyes darkened and he snapped,

"I have her. Get out of my way before I fire you."

Lucas's eyes widened and he slid out of the way, his head bowed. I let out a little whine and buried my head in Jake's chest. I wonder what cologne he wore, it smelled amazing. I suddenly was pulled away and placed onto a soft surface. A mattress. I whined in the back of my throat, annoyed at being taken away from his comfy arms. Jake chuckled lightly and pulled the covers up over my small frame. I was still in my dress but I slipped out of it under the covers. I grabbed it and handed it to him. I swear I could see a faint blush on his cheeks as he threw it into my closet.

"I will wake you up in the morning if you like, Bookworm."

"Really?"

"Sure, no need for that Lucas guy."

I frowned. Lucas was nice. I pouted and murmured sleepily,

"But I like Lucas... He's nice..."

Darkness tinted the edges of my vision and I slowly slipped into deep sleep, hearing my door close behind Jake as he left before I plunged into unconsciousness.
