《17》14. Life on the Road
Advertisement
Rami, Lysander and I first had to return home before our road trip to nowhere. We had to get some necessities such as clothes and money. I explained everything that happened to Eva and told her what we will be doing, and she promised to help us as much as she could. Because she was not with me and Rami when we broke in The Citadel, we were sure that she will be safe from the hunters. However, to be completely sure nothing happens to her, she will be staying with Nina.
Lysander, who remains unconscious in the backseat of my car, didn't have too much belongings so I took everything he has and shoved them in a backpack. As for me, I know we basically are on a life and death situation, but I'm not going to lie. I took a little while deciding what clothes to bring. I had to bring clothes that are suitable for all weather, but I also didn't want to carry so much. Also, I needed to bring a couple of books and other things for entertainments, and a bunch of other things that I may or may not need. But can you blame me? We are going out of West Grove and we don't know where we will go or what we will do. It's better to be prepared. I'm sure there will be a case where I will need my 10th Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver.
After packing, I drove by Rami's house. "Have fun at Scotland, Rami!" One of his roommates exclaimed as Rami left. He only brought one duffel bag and a medium sized backpack that he uses for school.
"That's all you brought?" I couldn't help but gasp in surprise.
He returned the surprise look at me. "Yes."
"Hmph." I smiled sheepishly and said no more.
1:45 a.m. May 24th, 2019. We begin our road trip to nowhere. A long road. Three runaways. Two humans and one werewolf. Who the hell knows what will happen out in the road to us. Hakuna Matata.

'Now leaving West Grove'
Right now, all I'm sensing is the blaring music, the vibration of the car engine and the night sky with shining bright stars over the empty country road. Lysander is still asleep in the back and Rami is wide awake but completely quiet next to me. I can't speak for what Rami is feeling, but I'm sure he's just as anxious as I am. Not knowing what happens to us is a little bit frightening. Still, we can't let fear stop us. If anything, it should motivate us to keep going.
The farther we go from West Grove, the safer we will be. At least, that's what my brain thinks and I hope it is right. If not, then oh well. I guess we'll be screwed. We are going to have to be brave. In my head, I feel like I'm in one of those adventures like my favorite characters. I have to be just like Hermione Granger, taking care of Ron and Harry.
Be smart and brave like Hermione. Be brave. Be smart. Be brave. Be smart. Be brave. Be smart. I am always sorted in Gryffindor in just about every Hogwarts personality quizzes online. Now I have to act like one. Be like Hermione Granger. Be like --
"Fuck!"
My grip on the steering wheel weakened as I felt a tingling sensation on my neck. Lysander had woken up and his nose was against my neck! The werewolf now puts a hand on my face and scanned me carefully with rage in his eyes.

"Holy fucking shit! She's driving!" Rami panicked, attempting to push him back down to his seat.
I quickly pulled over aside and stopped the car. Then I turned around to glare at the wolf. "Lysander! You need to calm down!"
"Did they hurt you?" His eyes continued to check me, completely disregarding my words. He also glanced at Rami, who looked like he's about to punch him. Sighing, I removed my seat belt and joined Lysander in the backseat. I was thinking of talking to him calmly to relax him but he kept speaking. "You shouldn't have come there! I didn't need you to rescue me. You could have gotten hurt or worse!" He hissed, his hands traveling up and down my arms, which I immediately yanked back from him.
We just saved him and he's angry at us! Maybe I should let Rami punch him. Or I could do it.
"A thank you would be nice." I scoffed, scooting away from him. "What was I supposed to do? Let them take you? Let them kill you?! No. I have to take care of your ass!" I opened the door and faced outside so I wind could help me feel better. I felt his hands on my shoulder, trying to pull me back to him. If I wasn't upset, I would just fall back to his arms but right now, my mood is all over the place. I got out of the car and walked back to the driver's seat. As I did so, I see him look down with a clenched jaw.
I decided to block him for a while. I turned to Rami and sent him an apologetic smile. "I'm so sorry about that, Rami. Are you okay?"
He nodded and gave me a thumbs up. "I was waiting for that argument to happen, to be honest. I just didn't expect it to be on the road while you're driving." He grinned. "But, if you don't mind, we should stop somewhere to eat. I need to eat to make myself feel a little better, and you need to take a break from driving and the werewolf looks like he's about to cry and faint again from hunger. I'm sure the hunters did a number on him and need energy."
I wanted to look back at Lysander but I didn't. "Yes boss." I used the map on my phone to look for the nearest place to eat. I need a drink. Maybe twenty.
***
We stopped by a small local diner from a little town known as Criton. It is about to be three in the morning so it was hard to find an open place, but this one called Tia's Treats is open 24 hours. Surprisingly, there's another customer other than us. I was expecting we have the whole place to ourselves.
Lysander ordered steak and mashed potatoes while Rami and I ordered breakfast foods. The old woman taking our order gave Lysander a weird look when he said he wanted a steak at like 3 in the morning. Me too, lady. But, I suppose, a wolf has needs. I ordered a breakfast sandwich and coffee while Rami got an omelette and orange juice.
"What are you kids up to at this time?" The old lady asked curiously as she gives us our food.
"We're on a trip. For science." Rami replied, his eyes lightening up at the sight of his breakfast. The lady asked no more and returned inside her little room. I watched the other customer, the drunk man on the corner, crying quite loudly about losing his wife. Tragic.

We ate our food in silence. Rami and I devoured our food in about ten minutes or less, though Lysander has only eaten less than half of his. He keeps giving me quick glances and then just stares at his food. I still haven't said a word to him, but I don't know if I want to talk anytime soon.
I'm just going to drink my coffee and just forget about everything for a moment. Just me and my coffee. But, that didn't last long. "So, what's our plan?" Rami asked, looking fully energized. "We are out of West Grove. Now what? Are we going to stay here? Because I'm getting the creepy ghost town vibes and I suggest another place."
"Well, I don't know where to go." I admitted. "But I was thinking of going West coast, the other side of the country. The farther we are from West Grove, the better. It shouldn't take more than a week. It depends how many stops we make and if we run into any trouble, which hopefully we don't. We just have to be really careful and be off the radar, then we can find a place to stay somewhere in the West."
Rami nodded. "Alright. West or bust. I like it. I've never been to the west coast states. How long will we stay there though?"
"That, I am not sure." I sank to my seat, feeling a little hopeless. "We'll see when we get there."
"We need to talk to Doctor Rai. He will know what to do. He can help us. The only problem is that we don't know how to contact him." I never found out what actually happened to Doctor Rai that day when I took Lysander from the lab. Was he caught? Did he also escape?
"Eva can help us find him." Oh, my Eva. I really hope she's okay. I mean, no doubt she'll be more than okay with Nina. I just hope she's out of the whole hunters situation. "But for now, let's just keep driving until we find a good place to stay at. You're right, this place is a bit odd." I looked at the drunk man again. Now he's just completely out, with his head down on the table and beer spilled all over it.
Rami nodded before turning to Lysander, who's watching us. "Any objections?" The wolf rolled his eyes and shook his head. "No? Good. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to pee." With that, he runs to the counter and screamed at the old lady, asking where the restroom is.
Laughing quietly, I finished the rest of my coffee and scold at Lysander. "Boy, I hope you know we wasted financial aid money on that food. You better eat it." He frowned and picked up a fork. He poked his food around but brought it nowhere near his mouth. "What's wrong? Do you not like it?"
"Andromeda." He sighs, looking at me sadly. "I'm sorry." He grabbed my hands and held it tightly. "I just didn't want you near those hunters and vampires. They could have hurt you. And it would be my fault because you risked your life for me. I don't want you to get hurt." He moves closer and our foreheads touched. And I melted on the inside.
"I hope you know, those vampires helped us save you. We got it all wrong. They just want me to help them, that's why Idris had been watching me. The vampire we met at the forest works with the hunters and he has been after you all this time." I explained, though I don't think he was listening. He had his eyes closed and one of his hand is caressing my jaw. I really didn't know what to do then, other than stare at his attractive feature.
Then, I heard the sound of a chair scraping against the floor and I jumped away from the wolf immediately. Rami raised a brow at us.
"Don't stop on my account."
Lysander grunted before picking up his knife and fork and finally eat the rest of his meal. Rami's grinning like a mad man at us. Who knows what's going on in that funny brain of his.
"So," Rami cleared his throat, still smiling. "We need to be careful of other hunters in other states as well. Remember what Igor said, all hunters work together. They are everywhere. While I -- "
"Wait. Who the hell is Igor?" I frowned. Do we know an Igor?
"Igor, you know. The weird vampire dude?"
"You mean Idris?"
Rami blinked and frowned. "Was that his name? Oh, whatever. Yeah, him." He shrugs. "When we were at the hunters' headquarter, I noticed they all have the same tattoo. It's not exactly on the same places, but most have it on their arm." He then used his phone to draw something on the note app. "Something like this." He showed us an image that looks like a number line. A straight horizontal line with small vertical lines through them. "So every time we see this tattoo, that must mean they are a hunter and we need to stay away from them."
"This is really useful, Rami!"
"I know. I'm great." He waves a hand dismissively. "Now let's go. This town is giving me goosebumps. Their bathroom smells like they're hiding dead bodies."
When we returned to the car, Rami volunteered to drive, allowing me to take a break. I jumped at the backseat and spread my body out to lay down.
"Alright Lysander, looks like you'll be riding shotgun -- or not." Lysander joined me in the back, putting my head on his lap, completely ignoring Rami. "Ugh, gross." Rami pretended to vomit as he puts on his seat belt and turn on the engine.
I closed my eyes as I felt Lysander's hands running through my hair. I bit my lip to suppress a smile. For about five minutes, I was so comfortable and peaceful, enjoying the silence and comforting hold on me.
Until...
"Rah rah ah-ah-ah! Ro mah ro-mah-mah Gaga oh-la-la!" The speakers roared. "Want your bad romance!" Rami sings along, dancing as drives. He must have sensed Lysander and I watching him. He turned to us and grinned. "What? I like this song."

After two more hours of driving, we decided to stop by a park. I took that time to contact Eva. I was planning on calling her, but she sent me an email instead. According to her email, she suggested for Rami and I to keep our phones off and put it on airplane mode when using it with wi-fi, since there is a chance that it will be tracked to find our locations. She will only contact us via email because she doesn't want to risk calling and being tracked down. Also, just when she was leaving to go to Nina's place, there were people who are looking for us so we have to be careful and email her whenever we can.
I shared this information with the boys. Rami looked a little anxious but was more bothered by the fact that he can't use his phone. It was probably for the best, considering he's already receiving a few calls and texts.
"So, we've never asked. What exactly did the hunters do to you?" Rami questioned as we rest by the picnic area of the park. Rami is laying down on a table while Lysander and I sit on a bench closely. It is a bit cold, so I'm using him as my heater.
"They wanted information." Lysander shrugs.
I frowned at the memory. They were hurting him. He had actual wounds and they weren't healing instantly like they're supposed to. "They tortured you for information like what?!"
"They asked where I was found and where's the rest of my pack. I told them the truth and they wouldn't believe me."
"What did they inject you?" I asked with worry and curiosity. "The purple liquid, I saw Dean inject it to you until that vampire caught me."
Lysander growled. "He hurt you."
I rolled my eyes. "Answer the question."
"I don't know what it is." He sighs, eyeing the ground. "But it was painful. It burns in my body and I felt really weak after."
"Purple and weakens a werewolf. Sounds like wolfsbane." Rami concluded. "I learned that it's poisonous for wolves. If received too much, the wolf may die."
My mouth dropped. Lysander could have died. That hunter could have killed Lysander. The werewolf was so worried about me getting hurt when he was the one who almost fucking died. This man is unbelievable. "I'm fine." Lysander whispered, looking at me as if he read my mind. Please don't tell me werewolves could secretly read minds.
"Anyways, I still have two of these." Rami brought out one of the Sleepers. I lost all the ones I had in The Citadel. "I figured we should see what it is and how to make it so we will have more and use them just in case we run into trouble."
"Right. How exactly do we do that?"
"No idea."
While Rami and I study the device, Lysander stripped down and shifted to his wolf form to run around the park. The park is hidden, so it was okay for him to roam around for a bit.
After about fifteen minutes, I decided to look for the dark wolf. I walked to the same way he went and found a little pond. It reminded me of the time Idris found me and I almost fell into the stupid pond. Who would have thought the vampire was nice, after all.
I bent down to touch the water and regretted it immediately. It was freezing. "Damn it." I put my hand inside my jacket and stayed there for a while, admiring the view of the cold but pretty pond. When I was about to stand up, my top was caught on something and I was pulled back down to the ground. And all of a sudden, a massive wolf hovers over me. "Lysander." I groaned. "You scared the daylights out of me."
As soon as I sat up, the wolf turns into the very attractive human that's making me go crazy. All the coldness within me disappeared and was replaced with warmth. My heartbeat increased dramatically, I'm sure he could hear it, which is probably why he's smirking. I was able to catch a hint of lust, but no red, in his eyes before they closed, along with the distance between us. He kissed me and I kissed back without hesitation.
I shouldn't be thinking this, but a really attractive werewolf is kissing me and everything seems like a dream. If I'm dreaming right now, I will do everything I can to go back to this dream every damn night.
My eyes fluttered open as I felt the werewolf biting my neck. I slipped out a squeal and I have never been more embarrassed. I felt Lysander's lips curve into a smile as they returned to my tingling lips. Shaking my head, I put a hand on his chest and pushed him away.
"Alright wolf. You and I need to talk." I said breathlessly. "The vampires said I'm your mate." The wolf looked away as red colored his cheeks. It's so amusing to see Lysander blush. "Is it true?" Lysander nodded. "So, what is it? What's a mate?"
His hand found mine and began to reply. However, I couldn't even hear the first word he said because a scream caught both of our attention. Rami. Without another second, we sprung apart and ran towards him. Lysander shifted to his wolf once again while I was far behind him. When we arrived back at the table where Rami is at, we found him still in one piece, not at all injured, but looked very frightened. He is standing on the table, his eyes glaring down at the ground.
Lysander got to him before me and froze. He stared at Rami, then back at whatever was on the ground. When I joined them, I saw that the subject is one massive spider. I put a hand over my mouth. Not to scream but to hide a giggle directed at Rami. I'm not a big fan of spiders, but this situation is gold.
Lysander simply barked at the spider and stepped closer to it, and the arachnid runs away.
"My hero." Rami jumps down from the table and embraced the wolf. Lysander barked once before running towards me. Rami pretended to look offended. "Whatever. I like cats better anyway."

Back in the road, Rami took the backseat to nap while Lysander took the seat beside me while I drive. Lysander was playing with the car radio and stopped as he caught Frank Sinatra's playing. I watched as he looks out the window and bops his head with the music.
I see he's a Sinatra kind of guy. Nice.
I sang along quietly, tapping my fingers on the steering wheel while doing so. While I checked back at the wolf, I found him watching me with a small smile.
"What?"
He just shakes his head but doesn't look away. "I'm so glad I found you."
I didn't know what to reply to that, but it sure made me go crazy inside.
After that, the song switched to by Journey and he was about to change it but I slapped his hand away from the radio. "No one skips on Don't Stop Believing." I pointed out. "If you hear this song anywhere and anytime, you gotta sing along. I didn't make the law. Sorry."
Lysander just tilts his head and gawks at me.
"Just a small town girl, living in a lonely world! She took the midnight train going anywhere!" I gestured for him to sing along but he just continues to watch me with his arms crossed, obviously entertained. "Just a city boy, born and raised in South Detroit! He took a midnight train going anywhere!" I sent Lysander a playful glare. "You have to sing along to this."
