《17》13. The Citadel

The next day, I had to face Eva's wrath. She questioned me and gave me a long lecture about where I have been and being careful. I told her everything that happened. From the vampire taking Lysander and meeting the clan of vampires and what our deal is. She most definitely lost her brains for a good hour.

Rami also decided to drop by. I had to tell him everything as well, but he wasn't as freaked out as Eva. I told him about the 'mate' thing and he just screamed loudly, "I knew it!" So, there's that. He didn't explain anything to me though. I asked him what it is exactly, but he just said that Lysander has to be the one to tell me about it. I don't really want to think about it right now though. We have more important things to worry about.

Over the night, Idris and his clan looked for Lysander all over the city and said they will report to me in the morning. And so, right now, at this exact moment, I am seated in the living room of my apartment, with a frozen Rami next to me, a half amazed Eva, and a very amused Idris and Eleanor.

"So, um." Eva smiled shyly, not knowing what to do. "Would you like some coffee? Or tea? Or whatever you guys want to drink?"

"We drink blood, if you have some of that." Eleanor smirked at Eva, crossing her legs.

Eva blushed while Idris rolled his eyes. "Stop scaring the humans, Eleanor. Tea would be lovely, thanks." Rami is still pretty much awestruck and frozen at his spot. While Eva runs off to the kitchen, Idris and Eleanor put their attention on Rami. "Is your friend okay?" Idris grinned. He ditched his seat next to Eleanor and sat down on the other side of Rami instead. He stared at Rami for a good minute, his grin growing wider.

"I have a question." I said mostly to Eleanor, since she's closer to me and Idris is too concentrated on Rami. "Do all vampires read minds or what?" It looks like Idris is reading Rami's mind.

"No honey, that's just me." She winks, flipping her red hair. "Not all vampires have special gifts like me. Some have nothing. Idris has a different thing, but that's his secret to tell."

"Alright." I want to ask but I'm not going to. I'm not exactly best friends with these vampires, so I don't want to piss them off or anything. "Also, how do I stop you from reading my mind?" I raised a brow at Eleanor.

"You can't."

"Wow." No privacy around vampires, I suppose.

"Nope." I glared at her while she laughs.

As soon as Eva returned, I had to shake Rami to return back to reality. He jumped as soon as he realized Idris is right next to him. "Oh my god."

"Nope. Just me." Idris smirked. "Alright. I assume Andromeda here has told you everything?" Rami and Eva nodded, so he continued. "Good. So as part of our deal to help her find the wolf, we searched the town last night and we were able to track his scent all the way down to the headquarter, along with the scent of another vampire that is not one of us."

"The headquarter?"

"The Citadel." Eleanor explains. "Hunters' headquarters. It is located near the forest, but not completely isolated. It's one of the big buildings on the hills." I have seen The Citadel building. It's pretty big. I've always thought it's only a business company so I paid no attention to it. "It wasn't hard to find the strong, awful scent of a werewolf. Hi scent led us to The Citadel. That means the hunters have him."

"The vampire that took him must work with the hunters." Idris added.

How could I have possibly figured that out?! When we first saw the vampire, he was about to be killed by a hunter. He came to us, thanking us for saving his life from that hunter and he was afraid of those hunters. He warned us to be careful about those hunters! How could he work with them? The only way this would make sense is if the entire thing was a set up. If the vampire has been working with the hunters all this time, every encounter was an act so that the hunters could catch Lysander.

"Very good." Eleanor nodded at me. "That is our same exact theory."

"What?" Rami finally speaks for the first time. "She didn't say -- "

"I read minds." Eleanor cuts him off with a proud smile. "And I must say, you have such interesting thoughts."

Idris shook his head. "We think that the vampire who took the wolf works with the hunters. Those hunters are out to kill supernatural beings. We have been dealing with them for years. Not only the supernatural beings in this town, but also in other states. They are all over the country, if not beyond it. A few of our members have been killed by them. We used to have over fifty and now there's only seventeen of us. Those hunters are extremely brutal and dangerous. Highly skilled."

They are going to kill Lysander.

My chest tightened at the thought.

"We have a feeling he isn't going to get killed." Idris says to me. "At least, not by the hunters. As you are aware, the government is looking for the wolf, to be used as a military weapon. The hunters will most likely sell him to the government for money. We don't know how soon the trade will occur, but our best guess is that it won't be long."

I put a hand over my neck as I struggled to breath. I wanted to cry at that moment, feeling hopeless and terrified. Either Lysander gets killed or sent away to become a weapon.

"Andromeda, we will help you save him." Eleanor took my hands and held it tightly. "We can do it."

Idris nodded in agreement. "Yes. But not alone. As strong and quick as vampires are, the headquarter is highly secured. We have tried to break in the headquarter before and lost members by doing so. The doors and windows have things that prevents vampires from entering. It's like a device that burns our body. It's not sunlight, but more like a vapor. Once it touches our skin, we are disabled to move, allowing hunters to catch us and kill us."

"The only way we can enter is through the rooftop." Eleanor carried on. "The only problem is the guards there. That's where most of the hunters are resting, so it's basically a death trap as well. But if someone were to distract the guards, we will be able to get in and get the werewolf out."

"And I'm guessing that someone will be me."

"Well, we recommend two people for better chance of survival." Idris suggested, his eyes wandering towards Rami. "You two work at the Silverstein Research Center, correct?"

I shook my head. "No. I'm only an intern and she's not working there anymore." Rami answered, scooting away from Idris.

"It doesn't matter. As long as you have an ID from the lab. That is all you need, and several small disguises."

"Okay." Rami grunts. "Let's say we are able to get inside. What's to say they won't stop us right away? It is very secured. I'm pretty sure they have security cameras. If they see us looking suspicious and going where we aren't supposed to go, they will take off our heads."

Idris and Eleanor didn't have a reply to that. I don't think they thought of the security cameras.

"Well, I could do it." Eva raised her hand. "I'm quite good with computer shit. I've hacked into cameras before. I can do it again."

"Interesting." Eleanor's eyes lit up at Eva. "How will you do that, sweetheart?"

Eva pointed her laptop. Not her fancy new one, but the old one resting inside the cabinet. She only uses that computer when she's doing some illegal stuff. Not exactly big, horrible stuff, but Eva used it when we need to hack into systems to make appointments for doctors and all those stuff when we're too lazy, or when we need fake ID, fake access, and all those sorts. She uses that separate laptop so she can throw it away just in case it gets tracked.

"I can control the security cameras and whatever they have on computer, without even leaving my bed."

"Brilliant."

"I know." Eva smiles widely. "Humans are clever."

"Yet brutal and disgusting."

"True."

"Okay, let me get this clear." Rami runs a hand through his curly hair. "Drew and I will sneak in the headquarter and go to the rooftop and distract the hunters there, so that the vampires can get inside and save Lysander. We sneak in and the vampires will do the rest."

"Correct."

"Okay. Well. I'm going to die."

Rami and I are in my car, parked by the forest. We are wearing our ID's from Silverstein, which does not have our names thankfully, along with our disguises. I'm wearing a blonde hair wig, glasses and high heels with a lab coat. Rami is wearing contacts instead of his glasses and a dad hat with a lab coat. Rami and I are carrying boxes from SIlverstein that contains a couple of 'Sleepers' as Rami called it. It's those devices that emit smoke that makes people who inhale it fall asleep. We didn't know what they're called so Rami called it 'Sleepers', though I'm sure it's called something else. Rami sneaked in Silverstein and stole about ten of them. We will use them if a hunter decides to attack us.

"Are you ready?"

"No. But let's go." Rami fixed his coat before getting out of the car. I took a deep breath and followed him.

Rami and I waited a couple of minutes until one of the vampires from Idris' clan showed up. Nico. He had distracted the two guards in the front doors. As soon as they left to chase Nico, Rami and I ran inside the building. As we entered the door, I felt the vapor that Idris was talking about and it's a little hot. I'd say it's some sort of chemical that burns something inside a vampire's system.

We tried our best to look unafraid but I'm sure we're both shitting ourselves.

"There are two vampires caught running just outside! Let's go!" A hunter ordered, running from a hall towards the door. She stopped as soon as she saw us. "Who are you?! What are doing here?" She eyed us up and down, her hand immediately getting ready to grab her weapons underneath her coat.

"We were told to deliver these here." Rami answered with a fake deep voice, in a British accent.

The woman's hand found my ID and stared at it for a long second. "Silverstein? I don't think we ordered anything from them this week."

"Well, they specifically told us to give these at the boss." I spoke, sounding rude and impatient. "We have a lot more of these to deliver, so just tell us where it is."

"Come on, Lyra! The vampires, we have to take care of them!" Another hunter came running, pushing the woman towards the door. "Where are those idiots?" The hunter hissed in annoyance as he found no guards at the door. "Whatever. Come on. We can't get them get away!"

The woman, Lyra, checked us one last time. "Third floor, last door on the right. Make it quick and get out." She ran out after that, leaving us alone.

"Remember, rooftop."

Rami and I cautiously made it to the second floor, avoiding as much hunters as we can. There were a couple who had seen us and checked our ID's and said nothing. Some asked us questions and we improvised. I think we're pretty good so far. I know Eva had turned off all security cameras, so I know all the cameras we passed by was nothing to worry about. Until we arrived at the third floor, I was feeling so confident. Then I heard that familiar growl at the end of the hallway and my heart jumped. We just needed two more floors and we would make it to the rooftop. But I couldn't bring myself to take another step.

That growl. It's him. I know it.

My mind brought me back to when I heard that growl for the first time. I found him, he was being tortured. It's the same feeling. That growl is calling for me.

"Drew. Rooftop. The plan." Rami said sternly, also hearing the growl and knowing what I'm thinking.

What if by the time we make it to the rooftop, they would have done something to Lysander already? What if right now, they are currently hurting him, or the government is taking him?

"Lysander is there. Rami. I trust you. You can do it."

"What?!"

"I have to go. Please be careful." He just needs to take a few more steps and he will make it to the rooftop. Once he gets rid of the hunters, he will be safe. But Lysander needs help right now. I just know it.

***

My heart and head is pounding as I went closer to the noise. I held onto the box in my hands and swallowed down my nervousness. I'm doing this for Lysander. I'm afraid but I have to be strong. I can do this. I can do this. I can do this.

"Speak up, dog!" I made it at the very end of the hallway where there are two doors. One door is completely silent, and the other has the growl and and a voice of another man. I heard a loud noise that sounds like a punch, followed by a groan. "Answer me! Where are the others?!"

It's a really stupid move, but I turned the knob and opened the door as quietly and slowly as I could. I peeked inside and was thankful that no one else is there other than one hunter and Lysander. The room is full of weapons. With the red light, I can see Lysander chained up against the wall with bruises on his face and body. I know he heals quickly, so whatever weapons that hunter is using must be special that it is causing actual damage on Lysander. The hunter, is none other than Dean. The drunk karaoke guy. I see him injecting a purple liquid at Lysander's arm, causing Lysander to cry in pain.

I need to do something. I could throw one of these Sleepers inside and break Lysander out of there. Yes. I will do that.

"You!" I heard a gasp near me, getting my attention.

Standing a few feet away from me us that vampire. That same one who took Lysander. Before I could control myself, I dropped the box and marched towards him with rage building within me. I clenched my fist and punched him right in the face.

"You stole my werewolf!"

He put a hand over his nose, which started to bleed. "I had to! If I don't do what they say, they will kill me!" His eyes darkened and he bared his sharp fangs. "And now, unfortunately, I have to kill you." I was suddenly pushed against the door, causing a loud thud that I'm sure has gotten the attention of Dean and Lysander from inside.

I'm screwed.

The vampire wrapped his hands around my throat. He closed the distance between us, and I was able to feel those teeth like knives on my neck. I closed my eyes and braced for the impact.

Until a loud alarm rang all over the building and the lights started to flicker on and off. The vampire was startled, and I took the chance to push him and run away. I picked up the Sleepers and threw them at the vampire. As soon as it hit him, white smoke came out. After a quick second, the vampire fell to the ground unconscious.

"Holy shit."

A vampire arrived as soon as he hit the ground. Quentin, one of Idris' friends. "You did that? Nice." He grinned. "Help is here."

Just as he said that, the door opened, revealing Dean the hunter with a big knife in his hand. "Vampire!" The hunter screamed. Dean ran towards Quentin. I didn't waste another second to watch. My legs immediately took me inside the room, towards Lysander.

"Holy fucking shit." I put a hand on his face. He is covered with bruises and he is bleeding from his chest. I ran towards the table and found the key of the chains, immediately freeing him from the locks. He fell to the ground, having no energy at all. "Lysander."

"Andromeda. You are not supposed to be here." He says quietly. "Too dangerous."

"I'm trying to save you, damn it." I hissed, running a hand through his hair.

He couldn't get up at all and I am unable to carry him. Though luckily, a couple more vampires arrived and carried him with ease. As we left the room, I found Dean and three other hunters on the ground while four vampires are pining them down.

"We have to go to the rooftop." The vampire carrying Lysander states as he ran up the stairs. The other vampire nodded and immediately carried me.

"What?!"

We all made it to the rooftop, where I saw more hunters down on the ground, either dead or knocked out. There were three other vampires there. As soon as they saw me and Lysander, they nodded and jumped off the building. "Oh my god."

The vampire holding me chuckled. "That's our way to exit, young lady."

This boy looks like he is 15.

"We're going to jump?!"

"Yes."

I covered my face with my hands while the vampire continued to move. I felt a gush of wind and my stomach dropping. I screamed so loud, I swear I've deafened the vampires and Lysander, and maybe even the humans around us. I continued to scream until I heard laughter.

"Andromeda. It's okay now." I heard the familiar voice of Idris.

I uncovered my face to see that we are back in the forest ground. I jumped from the vampire's arms and steadied myself on the ground, though it was difficult. I am dizzy and I feel like throwing up. Above all, my heart is beating so fast and my head feels like it is going to explode.

I looked around me and saw a shocked Rami standing next to Idris, and an unconscious Lysander on the ground. "He's okay. Just exhausted." Eleanor appears behind Idris. "But, we succeeded. We got him out."

I sighed in relief. "Thank you so much."

"Don't thank us just yet. It's not safe." Says Idris, looking between Rami and me. "These hunters, we didn't kill them. Not all of them. But they will come after you. After all of us." He pointed at his clan. All of them are there, though some are definitely injured. "We've pissed them off, so I think it's best if we leave West Grove."

Rami paled. "What do you mean leave?"

"West Grove is not safe for any supernatural beings. It hasn't been safe for a while now, ever since the hunters arrived here. But now that we've angered them, I reckon they will put more effort in finding us and killing us. Anyone who is a supernatural being and any human who has associated with them, it's dangerous. That includes you two." Idris pointed at me and Rami. "They know you work with them. They will come after you too."

Rami shook his head. "We can't just leave! Drew and I, we have school. We have things to do. We can't just leave our lives and responsibilities here."

"If you don't leave, you won't have a life." Eleanor glares. "You don't have a choice. You three must leave as soon as possible."

"What about you?" I asked. "Where will you go?"

She shrugs. "Our clan has done a few traveling. We'll find a place."

"Wait. Since you helped me get Lysander back, how am I supposed to do my part of the deal?" I don't even know if I could do it, but they helped me get Lysander back so I want to pay my debt. It's the least I could do.

Idris turned to Rami and smiled before looking back at me. "I'm sure you'll find away." Rami furrowed his eyebrows with confusion, but said nothing. "But for now, you must leave West Grove and hide from the hunters. I know, we cannot hide from them forever, but right now, it's the best thing to do. I will see you around." He had a twinkle in his eye as he said that. Smirking, he nodded at Lysander. "Take care, all of you. Until then, be careful."

And just like that, the vampires vanished like magic.

That leaves Lysander, Rami and I, and my car.

Rami took a deep breath and closed his eyes. "Okay." He sighs. "I can't believe any of this just happened. But, Idris is right. We have to leave. It's too dangerous for us to be here right now."
