《Bride》Chapter 1

"Alma, Jayna", my secretary called as she walked into my office.

"What's the matter?" I mumbled, immersed in my work.

"I have your mother on the line."

"Tell her I don't work here anymore," I answered without looking up from my work.

"She's been persisting since this morning. Answer it," she replied. "I'll transfer the call to you."

I sigh, leaning back in my chair. The phone on my table rings. I hesitate to answer. My cell phone has already been ringing all weekend and I haven't bothered to answer it. Honestly, I don't feel any worse. The door to my office opens and Jayna gives me a falsely surprised look.

"Answer," she orders, standing in front of me.

I look at her blankly before getting back to my work. She approaches my desk before picking up the phone and handing it to me. I glare at her and she walks out of the room with her tongue out. I hang up and the phone starts ringing again.

Dear Lord.

"I'm sorry I hung up, I didn't mean to take your call," I say as I pick up the phone.

"How ungrateful," my mother says.

"Hi, Mom. It's always nice to hear from you."

"Of course, it is. Hello," she grumbles. "Alma, you have to come home in two months."

"May I know why?" I wasn't planning on setting foot in Spain for a while.

"Your sister has a big announcement to make. To the whole family." My mother says.

"If it's about her wedding, count me out. Take me off the family registry if you can. And tell people I'm dead. It's better for both of us." I say reading my notes.

"Don't be ridiculous," she grumbles. "Your grandmother would also like to see you again. Be there on the fifteenth of the month."

She hangs up on me without letting me argue. She always has to involve my grandmother in the story when I reject her. That old hag. I still have two months left before I have to leave.I go back to work with my mind elsewhere. The clock on my desk shows 6:00 pm. My last sketch is finally finished. Tomorrow is a day off. I will finally be able to relax.

Shortly after I arrived in New York, I was hired at Dynasty. One of the biggest luxury brands worldwide. Shortly after I arrived, the company decided to specialize in weddings and events. There were hiring for wedding planners, stylists, jewelers as well as cobblers and estheticians.

After winning a competition and several interviews, I was hired as a wedding dress designer. I am in charge of designing the ideal outfit for the brides-to-be in which they will say "YES". Despite the pressure on my shoulders, I became the head designer. Now I only create dresses for the most important customers.

I open the door to my condo and head straight to my room. I put my bag on my desk and collapse on my bed. Fatigue takes over and my eyes close.

The buzz of my phone wakes me up from my nap. I answer straight away without looking.

"Hey, Alma! I need you to come somewhere with me!" My best friends Meavy shouts. "Meavy? Let me sleep. I need to sleep", I emphasized. "Please."

This is my best friend, Meavy. A bundle of joy that I met while I was in New York three years ago. At the time, I was just celebrating my graduation and we ran into each other at a bar. Since then, we have been unseparable. She even came to study in London two months later so we could stay together.

"Only if you listen to me until the end. Do you remember the nightclub that was supposed to open in Las Vegas? It's going to open tonight at midnight. The owner is a close friend of mine. I have two cards for the VIP room", she sings on the other end of the phone.

I sit down on my bed abruptly, which makes me dizzy. "I'm coming."

"I knew it! In an hour, at your place. Be ready. Love you."

I hang up and get out of bed to get ready. I go into the bathroom to take a nice hot bath and shower. I get out and stand in front of my wardrobe, looking for clothes to wear.

I hear the front door open and the sound of heels walking towards my room. My door swings open and Meavy enters the room.

"Whoa, before you say anything, I came with more news. The club is hyper-selective and very trendy. Only rich people will be there, so the dress code tonight is: chic and sexy."

"Thanks a lot, Meavy. Can you go out now?"

"Not yet," she says as she approaches me.

She unties my robe and looks at my underwear.

"Still a big fan of lingerie, I see," she says, making me blush.

I slap her hands before closing my robe. She laughs as usual. Meavy opens my huge dressing room and helps me to choose an outfit. I put on my dress, a watch and a pendant.

"What shoes?"

"My black Prada suede wedge sandals. At the bottom on the right of the shoe storage." Meavy approaches me and hands me my shoes. I thank her before putting them on quickly. I put on a black coat and grab a golden clutch. We finally leave my room.

"The private jet is waiting for us at the airport. We'll be there by midnight for the opening."

My best friend grabs me by the arm and we walk out of my house. We get into her car and she starts the car. The ride goes by in a flash and we get back in a car that Meavy rented in advance. I turn on the radio and one of our favorite songs is being played. We start singing at the top of our lungs the whole way. Meavy parks in front of the nightclub.

"Mila is getting married to James," I say quickly.

" She- What? I thought it was just a one-night stand."

"Apparently they were much more serious. I have to go back to Spain in two months."

"Do you want me to come with you?" Meavy offers, taking me in her arms.

"So you can ruin their wedding and have it all fall on me? No, I'll be fine. Don't worry about it." "Then get out of the car! Come on," she said, pulling me by the arm. "We came to have fun. We're going to have a drink and forget all our problems tonight. We're in Vegas! Vamos, chica!" Meavy shouts in the street.

I get out of the car laughing with Meavy. The nightclub looks like one of those places so fancy that no one dares to enter. What attracts the attention is mostly the queue that goes to the end of the street. About a hundred people are waiting for the opening.

Meavy moves forward and gives me my VIP card. She slides it on a reader stuck on the wall. The door opens and I do the same before slipping it into the pocket with my phone.

The heat in the room hits us full force. A smell of perfumes mixed with sweat floats in the air. The music is deafening and the bodies of the people on the dance floor are swaying to the rhythm of the music.

Meavy goes on the dance floor dragging me with her. After a few minutes, I go to the bar to have a drink. The barman serves me a glass of vodka. I continue to order all the cocktails of the bar, just to forget that my sister is going to get married to the one I thought was the man of my life.
