《Bride》Chapter 2

My head, gosh. I feel like it's going to explode. I open my eyes and the light blinds me briefly. I meet a foreign face in front of mine. It certainly isn't Meavy. She is not so hairy - not at all, in fact. A scream escapes my mouth and I grab the sheets to hide my naked body as I move away from the man.

"Stop screaming so early in the morning," the man says.

On closer inspection, I'm not home. My heart is racing in my chest as I try to figure out what's going on. I feel like my heart is going to give out on me at any moment. Maybe I overdid it yesterday.

"Who are you?" I asked as I backed away.

"You don't remember," The man said, straightening up. "Maybe this will trigger your memory." He raises his left hand in front of me and I see a wedding ring. I twist it around his finger before I see my initials engraved on it. What the hell ?

"This can't be happening", I whispered. "What happened?"

"We got married", the man said. "Last night."

Is this a joke? It has to be.

A nervous laughs escapes my lips. He smiles and lies back down. Now that I see it more clearly, this man isn't bad at all. He is rather young, probably in his twenties. He has a handsome face and light blue eyes that bring out his jet-black hair. Not to mention his muscles.

"Are you enjoying the view?" He asks playfully.

I snap out of my haze to look him in the eye. I had to get caught. He could pretend he hadn't seen anything. It's the least he could do, considering what I'm going through.

"What happened yesterday?" I asked more seriously.

"You came into the room I booked and sat down next to me. You took a few drinks in a row. Then I offered to pay you a cab home."

The more he talks about it the more I remember.

I walked into a room thinking it was the exit to the roof after climbing all those stairs. This man was there with other people. They were all talking to each other until I got there. He was attractive in his three-piece suit. I sat astride him without paying attention to the others.

"Let's have a drink together," I whispered, putting my hands on his cheeks.

A tear rolled down my cheek without me realizing it. He wipes it away quietly.

"Is everything alright?" he asks after a moment.

"No, but I want a drink. Is your girlfriend here ? She can come too."

"I'm single but you definitely need to sober up," he said, lifting me up and walking out of the room.

"Marry me."

"I'll call you a cab before the space cake I ate starts to kick in." He ignores me and goes outside of the room.

We both walk out of the room. I shake my head and pass him a piece of cake. Meavy's famous magic mushroom cake. He gobbles it down thanking me before going down to the bar. We had a drink together before the space cake started to take effect.

I walked to the wedding hall and dragged him with me. He pouted the whole way before he realized where we were.

"What are we doing here?" he asks at a loss.

"We are getting married?" I asked again. "Please."

"No! I am a free man!" He shouts, turning around. "Or maybe a woman?"

"A human," I said, laughing stupidly. "Help me find someone else then."

We went inside and somehow went to register our marriage and pronounced our vows. None of us really knew what we were doing.

I have vague memories of coming here and then nothing.

"This is the last time I'll ever take drugs. In my whole life", he announces. "I thought I was in a dream until I woke up at 4 a.m. and found you asleep on my bed. I wish it was a delusion."

"But you remember everything," I said.

"I don't remember a thing. I got our wedding photos sent by email straight from Vegas." His eyes are focused on his phone screen. "Apparently we even signed a prenup. It brought back some memories to watch the pictures, that's it."

A silence settles between us.

"I think we slept together," he says with a frown. "It's the most logical explanation in this situation." He lifts the sheet and looks underneath. I do the same and see a brown stain on the sheets. We really did it. Besides, he should change this mattress.

"I gave my virginity to a stranger," I muttered in shock.

"You weren't the only one that was a virgin," he retorts with a sigh.

"I want a divorce," I said abruptly. "Now, right now."

He burst out laughing and look at me. He looks at his phone screen right before looking at me in the eyes.

"And why not ?"

"I don't think that's going to happen."

"The prenuptial agreement says that if we got divorced, we'd both be penalized. I hate to break it to you, but we're together till death do us part."

Because on top of all that I signed a contract? My 'husband' gives me his phone. I see the infamous contract with my signature at the bottom and our smiling faces next to the contract. I have a vague memory of thinking that like this he wouldn't abandon me. I just forgot about the case where I want to abandon him.

We look sober. And my hair and make-up still look good.

No more drinking for the next ten years.

"That's illegal," I countered.

"I guess it is. Tell that to my family. It's already too late, and I don't think any of us can afford a five hundred million dollar divorce."

500 million dollars? I had a complete meltdown when I signed this nonsense.

"It can't be true. Why would the officer let us get married when we were so wasted ?"

A nervous laughs escapes the man in front of me. He glares at me, smiling.

"Because of you." " Me ?" "Yes, you. He said 'no' and you pulled out three grand in small bills and told him to sign. He didn't even need you to finish talking before he signed."

Money really makes people go crazy.

"Can I see the contract up close?"

"Here. It's the last attachement."

I read the document several time while my heart is about to give out. I can't afford to spend that much on a divorce. Well, I can but I don't want to. My savings would diseapear right this instant.

I might as well face the consequences of my actions as a responsible adult. Even more so because I was the one who asked this man to marry me. And I vividly remember taking him all the way to City Hall when he told me he was very well single. Not to mention the officiant I bribed.

Looks like we're tied together, for life. Or until my savings can afford to be so depleted.

"Can you remind me of your name? "I asked, defeated.

"Gabrielo Moretti," he replied, holding out his hand with a smile.

"Alma. Since we can't afford a divorce, let's do our best to make this marriage work, Gabrielo. We're running out of options at this point."

"You can count on me."

He is about to continue when my phone rings.

Incoming call: Mom

"Mom, this is really not the right time."

"It's not my problem. Try to find a date by then. Don't come here alone."

"All right. Have a good day, Mom." I hang up.

Oh, my, what an old hag... What did I do to deserve this?

"Was that your mother? You look like crap," he points out curiously.

"As always, when she bothers to remind me that she's alive," I replied.

I get up from the bed, pulling the sheets behind me. I head to the bathroom to do my toilet quickly. Except that I'm not at home and I don't know where things are stored.

"Gabrielo," I called through the bathroom.

"What can I do for you, Alma?" he asked as he entered in his boxer shorts.

I turn around abruptly and look away. Why isn't he dressed? He's far too comfortable for someone who met me last night.

"Could you get me a toothbrush, toothpaste and a towel and soap, please?"

Gabrielo pulls everything out of several cupboards and sets it down by the sink.

"Make yourself at home", he says, leaning against the door frame. "I mean, you are home technically."

"Would you mind going outside? I would like to shower."

"You have nothing to hide from me anymore, Stellina."

"Stellina?" I repeted, frowning.

"It's Italian," he explains, stroking my hair. "You really don't remember ?"

What is he talking about ? Am I supposed to remember anything in particular ?

"What are you talking about?"

"We've met before. Close the door when you shower," he adds as he leaves.

What is he talking about ? If I met someone as charismatic as him, I would remember.

I finish showering and get out, wrapped in the towel Gabrielo gave me. He is sitting on the bed wearing a tuxedo talking on the phone. He sees me and points to a dress on the bed. I hear a voice shouting from the other end of the phone.

After thanking him, I go back into the bathroom to change. He even put on underwear. It's embarrassing, but I don't have much choice. I dress quickly and go out after putting on my shoes from yesterday.

"How did you know my clothing size?"

"Your dress from yesterday. I looked at the label and sent someone to buy some clothes. "

He points to the piece of fabric on the floor, completely stretched out. What happened last night to make my dress look like this? I don't want to know anyway. I've already done enough.

Gabrielo rubs the bridge of his nose and smiles.

"Is everything all right?"

"Everything's fine," Gabrielo says, pale. "My mother just found out I got married."
