《Nicknames》Chapter 24 ~ Masbourian

I'm the first one in the office and I immediately get started on finding any clues with the new resources I have here. Quickly the rest of the team comes in, Emily rushing up to me and pulling me into a hug.
"Carter are you okay?" Emily asks.
No, I'm not okay Luna was taken.
"I'm fine, let's just find Luna. Or anything to lead us to her."
Derek and Emily nod in agreement and we get started on going over all the details we have pieced together of Anthony's past activity. I'm staring at a wall of items when my desk phone goes off. I pick up immediately.
"Hello, Carter, how are you?"
I gesture to Emily to trace my call as I listen to the gruff voice of Masbourian from the other end.
"No need to track me, you won't get anywhere. I'm just calling to inform you of how Luna is."
"Of course, you have something to do with this. When I find you, I will kill you."
Masbourian just laughs in his typical taunting form. I hate this man with a passion.
"Luna is as fine as someone can be for being chained to a bed. But as much as I enjoy your empty threats, here is a hint to where she is located. Dirty Dancing."
What the hell is this prick talking about?
"Love is strange, isn't it?"
A low growl leaves the back of my throat. That's the song Luna and I sang together at her aunt's house. He was watching us in Miami.
"No one puts Baby in a corner," he continues to taunt as his last words before hanging up on me.
With more force than necessary, I slam my phone back into its position and flop down into my seat. Not even a second later does Emily come running up to me with her laptop open, ready to show me something.
Hoping it's going to be something to bring us closer to Luna, I shift my attention to the screen only to feel my heart drop. Luna lays chained to a bed with Anthony hovering over her. There's nothing to take in from the footage to give us clues. It's just a small room with wood floors, walls, and nothing else but a bed.
It's live.
I pick up my phone and place the call to the number we have for Anthony. The number that's called Luna's phone 10 times in the past two days. Derek immediately begins to trace it.

"Hello?" The prick on the other end says.
"Where is she?"
He plays dumb. "Where is who?"
"Where the hell is Luna?" I growl.
The live feed continues to play in front of me. Luna lays tied to the bed in the same skirt she had on yesterday. She hates sleeping in her day clothes. She hates not taking a shower at least twice a day. And I know for a fucking fact she doesn't like to be tied up against her will.
"Luna can't come to the phone. Can I take a message?"
"Yes. Please tell Luna that after I bring her home, I'm going to hurt her ex-boyfriend, Anthony, so bad that he's going to wish he is dead."
He takes a deep breath then lets out a low grumble. "I don't like threats." He hangs up and we lose the trace.
With a deep huff, I lean back in my seat and look over at the picture on my desk. Last year Luna and I went to California to visit my friends. She said no at first because she didn't understand how I could ask her to go to California when I won't even go with her for Christmas. But after a few days, I convinced her to fly to the other side of the continent with me.
We went to the beach and here we took the picture that Luna got framed as a Christmas present. The ocean sits behind us and the sun shines perfectly. Luna stands next to me in a bikini and I stand shirtless in my swim shorts. My lips are pressed against her forehead as she smiles up at me.
This is one of my favorite pictures because this was a major turning point in our relationship. Luna wanted to take a picture at the beach, but she kept getting mad at me because I wouldn't look at the camera. I couldn't take my eyes off of her. I told her "How could I look at a camera when I had something way more beautiful right beside me?"
She, of course, rolled her eyes at me, but I was still able to make her smile. At least before she slapped my chest and shoved me away as she said, "So I'm a 'thing' now?"
I just laughed and took her hand, pulling her close to me and kissing her slightly sweaty forehead. That's when Malik took my favorite picture.

I'm pulled out of my thoughts when Derek taps my desk. "We got his home address let's go."
Without a thought, I grab my things and follow him into the elevator to the car. When we get to the house I notice how the place has really fallen apart in the past years.
Cautiously, I pull out my gun then open the door walking in with my team behind me making sure it's clear. The place is disgusting, but it's safe to say Luna isn't here. We search around the house for anything that will help us find the location. But when I find what's in the closet I literally want to throw up.
Pictures of Luna surrounded by old items she threw away fill the closet. He took her bra that she threw out two weeks because the underwire broke out. And an old coffee cup from Starbucks. It still has her customized sticker on it. This shit is weird.
"Call this shit in and have the place processed," I tell Emily and Derek as I brush past them and out of his godforsaken place.
When I get into the car I receive another call. "Agent Bentley."
"Well, I guess that search proved futile, yes?"
"Fuck you, Masbourian."
He laughs then releases a sigh. "As much as I love watching you writhe, it's obvious that losing the love of your life is taking a toll on you. So I have another hint for you."
"I'm done fucking around Masbourian. Tell me where Luna is."
"Luna is an Italian name of Latin origin right? It means moon." I don't respond so he continues. "I sometimes wish I had a little moon. The light in my darkness. I always wanted a kid, but it just never worked out for me. Too risky in this life right?"
I wait for him to get to the point. If he doesn't give me something I can use soon, I'm hanging up on him. He must seem to sense it because he finally gives me the hint. Something about him having kids and his mother who would love being a grandmother. Then he hung up.
I grip the steering wheel in an attempt to reign in my anger as Derek and Emily climb into the car. Neither one of them say anything for a few minutes, then Derek finally speaks up telling me that I should call Luna's family. I scoff at him. Luna's not dead so why do I need to call them. I'm going to find her so there is no need for calling them.
"Let them know what's going on," Emily says poking her head to the front and looking at me. "They will be upset if you don't tell them."
I guess, but right now I need to find Luna so I'll call them later tonight.
"We are going to find Luna. You guys have a connection and it's incredible how close you guys have become in such a short amount of time. I'm actually kind of jealous. I've known you for five years and I'm still learning about you. She knew you for two years and can tell me your favorite food and how many times you'll watch a movie before you get tired of it."
He shoves my shoulder and smirks. "But I do know what type of sex you like." I'm not going to entertain this buffoon. "The kind with Luna."
I roll my eyes and wait for him to get to the point of his whole encouragement speech and thankfully he finally does. He gives me the lovey-dovey bullshit of Luna coming into my life for a reason and us being meant to be. I would like to believe we met for a reason. She didn't have to stay at the bar after her friend left, and I didn't have to stay at the bar after I finished my drink. I also didn't need to take her home with me and offer her a place to stay.
I didn't use any of the money she paid. I put it in a trust fund for her kids the same way her father did for her. If I'm not the man she decides to spend the rest of her life with, I still want her to be happy and for her kids to be set. I know for a fact that she wants a minimum of two.
Derek is right though, we are going to find Luna and we are going to bring her home. Masbourian gave me fucking riddles. Dirty Dancing and something about his mother who would love to be a grandmother. I need time to figure it out.

Conquest Of Mortem
*NOTE* This novel is a war of attrition. To say anything less is a disservice to its demand. While comparable to other such works as Ulysses or Moby Dick, each sentence in Conquest is an enemy to be tackled. Not in the ways of difficulty but in absurd density that wishes nothing more than to destroy what patience you may have. Do not tackle chapters as you would ordinary chapters in an ordinary book. Tackle each chapter as a book unto itself. A foe to be vanquished, a period of life to leave behind. Seek to be master of this work. Seek to overcome. For in its design is the willpower, and the perseverance, and the strength of someone who sought meaning in struggle. As I discovered these in times of ultimate desperation, so I hope for you to discover these things. This novel is a love letter to your trials. May you overcome them. May you master them. May you become conquerer.- SeedSagaA literary epic for logophiles, philosophers, and poets alike. A journey into zeitgeist, the impact of media on culture, and the endurance of morality against an onslaught of hatred. These vague descriptions do little to compact Conquest's density into a bite-size summary. They do however relate the basest themes found within. A plot, if such can be surmised, is strung thinly across multiple perspectives, weaving together these concepts into a seemingly distorted tapestry of indecipherable events. Inspired by early 20th century modernism, Conquest will challenge the reader, and provide critique on the medium upon which all great stories are derived. Further interpretation is up to you now; an explorer among a sea of words. Venture on and discover what lies ahead, in...CONQUEST OF MORTEM
