《Married But Single》Chapter 20

She came into her small apartment and gently stretched her back as much as her heavily pregnant self could allow, then went to get a glass of water from the tiny kitchen.

She came back to the room and winced as she slowly sat down, conscious of her increasing backache.

She looked around the small room with a weary sigh, wondering when she would have the time and strength to do a thorough cleanup for that week as her job demanded her leaving the house in the morning and returning at night except on Sundays.

She worked as a cleaner in a small motel not too far from her small one room apartment located in an indecent neighborhood that was more of a dump site and an avenue for indecent and criminal activities in the outskirts of the city.

But that was the only place around that she could afford to stay in.

After her last encounter with David, the pain and hurt were too much for her to bear. She had even contemplated suicide once until she remembered she couldn't do that to her innocent unborn baby who was still in her womb.

She had left the city altogether after she found this place then sold her phone and got a much smaller one with a different line then started life afresh and ever since, she had not seen nor heard from the people from her old life.

She even stopped reading newspapers and magazines and listening to News because sometimes these News featured them especially him.

She had tried to get a job in the city with her good results but most of the office positions were filled and some of the employers had asked to sleep with her before they could help her so she stopped trying and instead looked for jobs around her neighborhood before she got this one.

It wasn't much but it fed her and took care of her bills. She hoped for a raise or get a better job by the time her baby was born.

She also hoped that she wouldn't have to raise her child in such an indecent environment.

It was her eight month and her boss had been telling her to take the remaining months off since her sixth month and return after she had put to bed but she had refused since she wouldn't get paid if she took that offer. And it had been way too stressful and hectic for her. She was only keeping on because of her child.

She had saved some money within these past months that she used to get some baby things for her child and which would last her for some time after she gave birth.

Her neighbors next door had been kind to her. The married couple who had two grown up children had fed her when she had nothing to eat at particular times and she never even asked them for it.

She was very grateful to them.

She was finally going to check the gender of the baby the next day being Sunday since that was her only free day so she would know what exactly to get for her child apart from the unisex baby stuffs she had gotten.

She ate the bread roll she had gotten on her way back with water which would serve as her dinner that night then lay on the 4inches mattress as she waited for sleep to come. And as usual, sleep hardly came.

"Congratulations Miss Thompson, you are having a set of healthy twins, a boy and a girl."

How in heaven's name was she going to take care of two babies and raise them? How was she going to achieve that with her meager salary?

"Stop worrying Annabelle, everything will be fine." Her kind neighbor Mrs Rebecca soothed. She was a woman in her late thirties. "God will definitely make a way."

"Why hasn't he made that way yet? For the past seven months I have suffered with only my children as my source of strength." She said painfully. "How am I going to take care of my little ones when they are born?"

"A solution will surely surface ." Rebecca encouraged. "Where there is a will, there is always a way."

The woman paused and stared at Laura, wondering whether it was wise to bring what she was thinking up.

"Don't you think it'll be wise to contact their father again?"

"No!" She said firmly. "I would never do that again. I tried once but wasn't successful, why would the next time be different?"

"Because it's been months Ann, he might listen to you this time." Rebecca reasoned. "Back then his anger and wounds were still fresh, I'm sure he would have calmed a very long time ago. Besides, you said you changed your number when you moved here, how are you not sure that he and your family might have been trying to reach you?"

"The same family that threw me out of their house and lives." She said, hatred lacing her words. "I do not have a family!"

"I understand how you feel, Ann." Rebecca reasoned. She patted her hand. "Everything will be fine."

"Thank you so much," Annabelle smiled. "For everything."

Rebecca smiled back. "You're welcome. Always know that my family and I are here for you and the twins."

Annabelle nodded with a wide smile. "Thank you."

"Come on be happy!" Rebecca said vivaciously. "We should be celebrating that you're having twins!"

❤️❤️❤️

Samuel and Sandra were welcomed into the world on the last day of the ninth month of Annabelle's pregnancy.

She looked at her little ones and fell in love with them immediately. They were so adorable that she marveled in awe at the glorious creatures she and David had made.

She only wished their father were there to see them too.

The trio went back home when it was due and her close neighbors celebrated the birth of her babies.

Annabelle was beyond happy at the gifts she had been blessed with in the persons of her children. It was as if God had finally noticed her loneliness and anguish and decided to bless her with this children to call her own and keep her company.

She couldn't be happier. And she would do all it took to make sure they got all the love they deserved unlike her while she was growing up. She would make sure they lived a good, happy and contented life.

"Mummy!" Annabelle rushed out of the kitchen as her little girl ran into the room with tears on her face.

"What is it sweetie, why are you crying?" She asked with concern as she squatted and tried to clean Sandra's tears.

"My chocolate, Sammy took them from me and ate them all!" Sandra wailed.

"What? Oh that brother of yours." Annabelle facepalmed. "Don't worry baby, I have another one with me. Come have some."

Sandra nodded and followed her mother to get another bar.

"Mummy can I get another one too?" Samuel squealed as he ran in.

"No!" Sandra exclaimed with her cute tiny voice.

"You would have gotten one Sammy, but you won't because you took the one that belonged to your sister which you shouldn't have done." Annabelle scolded gently.

"But mum..."

"Sandra is your twin sister, Sammy, you should treat her like one. You shouldn't take something that belongs to her."

"Yes mummy." Samuel said with remorse. "I'm sorry mummy, I won't do that to Sandy again."

"That's my boy," Annabelle smiled at his cute face that looked a lot like his father. "Now apologize to your sister."

"I'm sorry Sandy."

Sandra stuck her tongue out. "Just pwomise me you'll give me half of your chocolate when next mummy gets some for us."

"I promise!" Samuel said with a wide toothy grin.

"Okay, we're fwends again!" Sandra replied with a grin of her own.

Annabelle smiled at them both and turned to go into kitchen again.

"Who's happy to be moving into the city?"

"Me!" The twins chorused.

"I can't hear you." She grinned.

"Me!" The twins chorused again and the trio shared laughter.

She had finally gotten a good job as a secretary in a big firm with a very good pay in the city about seven months back and had decided to fulfill her dream of raising her children in a better environment and atmosphere.

She had decided they would move to the city as she could now afford to rent a house there. Besides, she really needed a place that was close to her office because taking the bus to the office everyday was much more than an hour and the transport was much.

"It's just that I'll miss school and my friends here."

Samuel said sulkily.

"Don't worry darling, you'll make new friends over there and go to a better school okay?" Annabelle assured.

"Okay mum!"

The Heavens has finally remembered her. Her world was finally blessed.

❤️❤️❤️

The one bedroom apartment they moved into was located in one of the fine areas of the city. It wasn't very spacious but at least they had a decent living room and a bedroom with the kitchen and bathroom, unlike the other one that only consisted of one small room with the tiny kitchen and bathroom. And asides that, their new apartment was way cleaner and kinda luxurious compared to the former and it was located in a serene and tush environment.

Finally.

She watched her children run happily around the house in awe and happiness and she wondered how they would have felt if it was their father's mansion she had brought them to.

It's been almost six years. Almost six years since she last saw him.

She thought of him everyday. Only the sight of her son brought back memories of him.

He probably might have been married again now. And probably to Chanel who must have given him a child or children by now.

If only things had gone well between them.

She sighed.

She had long come to realize that not all relationships were meant to last forever. Not all marriages were meant to be.

Also, what would be would be.
