《Hush | on hold》Chapter 23: different girl

"Ah, wait... Do I seriously have to do this?" I asked, cringing at myself in the mirror and Melanie sighed. She and Hayley were holding handfuls of black dye, plopping onto my hair and spreading it all over.
"Wasn't this your idea?" She asked, raising her eyebrow and I nodded slowly, "I know but..."
I figured I'd make myself somewhat unrecognizable since I'd rather not run into that old dude somewhere and he figures out I never actually died but...
They sighed as they finished spreading the dye through my hair and pulled off their gloves, "The box says to let it sit for 30 minutes and then rinse..." Astarte said, reading the back of the box. She threw it across the room and into the trash before walking up to me,
"You look sexy, what's the big deal?"
Hayley called the two of them over when I proposed the idea and they came over almost immediately. Astarte had brought a bag full of stuff for me to use... Wigs, hair dyes, contacts- I wanted to question why she even had it but I didn't. I figured her answer would've made me want to ask her even more questions.
"What are you planning on doing now?" Melanie asked, leaning against the wall, "Are you gonna come back and work at the shop? I'll understand it if you don't by the way... I doubt that I would if I were you."
I looked down and sighed, "I-" Astarte cut me off before I could answer that and clicked her tongue, "I know he's the leader of the Mafia and all and this is going to sound really out of pocket but are you really going to just let him turn your life over like that?" She asked, raising her eyebrow.

"I understand why he did what he did," She said, nodding her head, "He wanted to guarantee no one else would come looking for you and at the same time, he made sure of it that his people knew he wasn't soft like they thought of him. His men wanted a strong leader, one that wasn't ruled by even his own emotions, so... basically, by destroying both his weaknesses he gave them exactly that. Now he has their loyalty. But, just because that's what he wanted doesn't necessarily mean you can't do what you want anymore."
"Yeah except the fact that he might actually shoot me this time if I mess shit up for him."
"If he was ever worried about that, he would've gotten rid of you by now." She bent over my shoulder and stared at my reflection with me in the mirror, "Besides, you gotta live a little. It's more exciting taking risks sometimes... if you never walk on the edge, you won't get to see all the daring things life has to offer."
"I...guess."
"Good, good..." She smiled and held up some color contacts in front of me, "Brown or blue?"
It's pretty amazing how so little can change so much. I stood in front of the mirror after the dye washed out, my eyes both the same color as the other, and it's not that I looked so much different but, at first glance I almost wouldn't recognize myself.
"Do you think they'll recognize her?" Hayley asked and Astarte shrugged, "Who knows? Gio will know his little princess immediately, especially if you guys ever got close and smoochy," she said, making me blush.
This girl...
"Well, did you?" Melanie asked and I shook my head quickly, "Can we stay on topic?!"

Astarte snorted, "Look, you're dealing with men here... I'm pretty sure half of them were too busy staring at your boobs than your facial features. Well, your eyes are a different story but, if you change one of them to same color, I doubt they'll recognize anything."
I don't know if I should feel relieved by that or objectified. It's not like it isn't true though, the first thing Gio realized about me were my eyes, the same goes for Melanie too actually.
"Can we promise from now on, that we'll stick together?" Hayley asked, "I don't want anything to happen to any of you... I mean Jeyri almost died, we all could have..."
Melanie chuckled and pinched her cheeks, "You're such a cutie Hayley. Of course we're going to stick together."
"I could get you guys some guns if you want?" Astarte suggested and Hayley threw up her hands, "I- I'll pass..."
She looked toward me and I shook my head, "I'd rather not..."
"Welp! Suit yourself, I don't mind getting my hands dirtier for you bitches." She pulled a gun out from under her jacket and winked at us, "Just tell me when and where and I'll be there."
"Is that loaded?" Hayley asked, her eyes widening and Astarte pulled her close to her, "Wanna test out that theory?" She asked and Hayley shook her head, "Not really..."
"Hayleyyy, you're gonna scare poor Sebastian away if you don't open up a little more," Astarte teased, "You need to live a little more too. You're so shy."
"Huh? S-Sebastian?" She looked at me with her eyes wide and I held up my hands, "I didn't say anything!"
"What about Sebastian?" Melanie asked, raising her eyebrow and Astarte wiggled her eyebrows, "Hey Hayley, doesn't trust also come with no secrets? Well, we're waiting, tell us all about Mr. Sebastian huh?"
"Astarte!" Hayley groaned and we all laughed.

Magitech Awakenings
In this world of Terrapia, myth states that Dragons are caretakers of the chaos wheel, a band of energy that encircles the world, penetrating through the very fabric of the dimension. They tame and convert it, not only to fuel their primal magic, but also to gentler forms that man and beast alike can tap. But now they have faded away, being sighted less and less the past couple millennia. With magic weakening, science has taken root and in many cases merged in a symbiosis with magic. Guppy Bright, a 17 year old young woman, is a technomancer apprentice living in the bustling city of Nolusburg trying to make ends meet. Apprenticed to the enigmatic and somewhat crazy Technomancer Friedrich BrassTuner, she participates in an experiment meant to tap a new rich source of energy. However something goes horribly wrong and a rip in the very fabric of reality opens in the workshop, sucking in her mentor and ejecting a dying white dragon. The dragon, after examining her, takes a gamble and entwines their souls, an act that causes the dragon, Barthurthalomalew Dresnarian Kratomanger Harrowhew Objuslorow, the 5th, aka Batty, to regress into a baby dragon, sealing much of his powers and memories in the process. This act also has profound effects on Guppy, her own magic is now crazily changed in ways no one, least of all her, understands. Guppy is suddenly plunged into a world of mystery, intrigue and politics, where everyone either wants to control, or eliminate her. Armed with little but her courage and unpredictable newfound magic how will she survive and protect herself and those she loves when everyone from techno radicals, magic purists, politicians and guttersnipes are out to get her. And those may be the least of her problems if Batty's fragmented memories are any indicator.

Leveling Up Is Better Than Reality
If you've ever been called a slacker, you know, it's not that you're lazy, it's just that you're not interested. Your values don't allow you to work hard as you wish to live in a heaven-like world where you don't have to do anything. As Gandhi said, ""Be the change you wish to see in the world...'' Wise words indeed. This story's about lazy- I mean an idealist hero named Zellin living in an RPG-like world. I'm going to deem this work as PG-13, but you never know...
