《Hush | on hold》Chapter 22: going back to normal

The sound of gunshots echoed in my head still.
I opened my eyes up to a bright light shining in my face and for a second I thought I was dead. Then the thought crossed my mind, dead people don't feel pain.
I held my hand out in front of my face and shuddered at the sight of blood. It was hard to breathe because it felt like something was missing from me but when I ran my hands over where I knew Gio had shot me, there was nothing there.
No wound, no blood...
I looked back at my hand and saw that it was clear as day, there was nothing on it. I sat up almost instantly. My head throbbed when I moved too quickly and I groaned. I lifted the hem of my shirt, which I don't remember changing into, and looked down at my stomach. There was nothing...
It felt like there was but there just wasn't. My mind was imagining the pain that I expected entirely.
I looked around the room and I immediately recognized it, this is Hayley's house. My eyes searched around the room for a mirror to see my reflection and I paused once I found it. I had bags under my eyes and it's safe to say that I looked very much alive yet... how I felt is something else entirely.
I stood up slowly so that I wouldn't get dizzy and walked over toward the mirror to get a better look at myself. I pinched my arm and chuckled to myself, Ha... I'm alive. Was this his plan to make them stop bothering me? To make them think I was dead? I can't lie and say I'm not relieved as hell but damn, he scared the life out of me.
I pulled my shirt back down before opening the room door. The smell of something cooking hit my nose and I smiled, must be Hayley... I never saw her that day. I walked downstairs, leaning against the stair railing as I descended the steps and paused in the hall when I heard voices.
"Hey! Come on... give it back already! I'm tryna cook here!" I heard Hayley's voice and frowned, Who's she talking to?

"And I'm telling you, just ask nicely and I'll give it back to you," I heard a guy's voice reply and my eyes widened, hold on a second... I know this voice!
"Stop being such a dick-"
"Did you just curse? Wow, someone's got a rude mouth."
"Sebby... come on, please?"
Sebastian?!
My mouth dropped open as I stood in front of the kitchen entrance and I took in the sight of the two of them. Sebastian was leaning against the counter holding something in his hand that Hayley was apparently trying to reach for. They both froze and their heads turned to me and Hayley quickly backed away from him, her face turning red.
"Jeyri... you're awake."
The room was quiet for a few seconds and I looked between the two of them, "Uhh, hey?" I waved at them both and Hayley ran toward me and pulled me into a hug, "You're awake!"
When she looked back at me, I could see tears building up in her eyes and I chuckled, "Don't cry! I'm alright you know..." I glanced over at Sebastian who was just standing there awkwardly then back at her, "Uh..."
"You were out for a whole week you know?!" Hayley said, grabbing both my hands. She pulled me into the kitchen and sat me down at the table before sitting down herself. "Sorry," she said, wiping the tears from her face, "They said you might wake up today and I wanted to cook something before you woke up but you had to come down and see this..."
This? I feel like I'm missing so much information about what happened in between? When on earth did she and him get close? And I've been out for an entire week?? What the hell?
"What happened that day? I didn't see you! I thought something happened to you, I was worried... and Giovanni didn't explain anything-"
She looked down and sighed, "I didn't know what was happening that day either. We got in the car and we were following you all and then suddenly we weren't. Sebb- Sebastian took me back to my house and wouldn't answer any of my questions so I was really worried. Then later that day, Lucifer brought you here and you were covered in so much blood, I thought it was yours, I thought you were gonna die."

"So did I," I muttered, looking down. "He just up and shot me like it was nothing."
"HE DID WHAT?!" She half-yelled and she immediately turned to Sebastian and he froze. He held up his hands in defense and smiled nervously, "Hey, I didn't know he was going to do that till after the fact- I mean... you're still alive aren't you?"
She pinched the bridge between her nose and tapped her foot down on the floor, "No wonder... Mel called me thinking that you were dead."
"I think he protected me... well his suit did- he told me to wear it beforehand. It still felt like he shot me but, I guess the bullets never went through..." My voice trailed off and I sighed, "I just wish he would've told me- I really thought I was done for. I don't know if I should feel thankful or if I should feel scared, maybe both?"
I held my hand over where I thought he'd shot me and smiled slightly, "I'm glad you're okay though. I don't know what I would've done if I something had happened to you." My eyes met with Sebastian's and he cleared his throat,
"You can trust me, I wouldn't hurt her."
"That seems hard to believe after what I just went through," I said, raising my eyebrow and he sighed, "If it's Gio you don't trust, he doesn't even know I'm here. The only thing he told me to do was take her back home that day. I kept coming around here to make sure she was good, I'm not planning on faking her death."
"So you don't trust him either?"
"I didn't say that-"
"Then why not tell him you're here?"
He paused for a while then shrugged, "We have different ways to go about certain things..."
What does that even supposed to mean?
I opened my mouth to reply back to him but paused when I heard my stomach growl. Hayley jumped out of her seat and let out a small gasp, "I'm sorry! You haven't eaten in God knows how long..."
Sebastian walked over and placed a plate of food down in front of me, then another in front of Hayley before smiling, "Sorry for the wait, you must've been starving."
I nodded and Hayley sat back down slowly, "But-" she started and he cut her off, "Don't worry, I finished it for you. It's my fault you didn't have it ready anyway." He cleared his throat, "I'll excuse myself now-"
"You can stay if you want, eat with us," I said, and he chuckled, "Ah, I'll have to pass on that offer, unfortunately." He looked down at his watch and grabbed his jacket from off the chair,
"Duty calls," he said as his phone rang.
I wanted to interrogate him honestly... He was just so close and cozy with my best friend-
The room went silent after he left out and I looked down at the food in front of me. I felt more hungry when I started eating than I did when I hadn't. Hayley beamed at me as I finished my plate of food and I paused, "What?"
She shook her head, "I'm just glad that you're here."
"I'm glad I'm here too," I rubbed my stomach and stretched out my arms, "You're a real lifesaver. I was staarving."
She giggled but she stopped when she looked at my hand. I paused, "What's wrong?"
"Oh... it's nothing just, when Lucifer brought you here, you were wearing a really expensive looking ring, I just remembered that when I looked at you, it's not there anymore."
I looked down at my hand and sighed, "Yeah... he told everyone I was his fiancée."
Her mouth dropped open slightly making me nod,
"I know right! I wasn't expecting it either... I'm just glad I don't have to deal with it all anymore. I'll go back to my normal life and forget any of this ever happened."
That's what I said but, deep down part of me was still curious about him. I was afraid and I wanted to stay away yes, but at the same time...
I'll never be able to forget these past few weeks and I have a feeling somehow that things won't just end here.

Twisted Skies
After his master's death, Thurain leaves his rural home behind and travels to Heliana, the cramped city founded on the scientific progress of cultivation. Under a fake name, he aims to enter the Elemental Path Sect, the place of his master's death, to find both his killers, and closure. However, surrounded by the strange and horrible wonders of Heliana and its mixture of heroes and villains, his master's death is not the only murder he may have to solve. --- First attempt at a xianxia novel from me. To shake things up from the usual formula, the setting is more steam-punk than you might expect, and there are elements of murder mystery mixed in with the standard formula (though I'm not entirely sure yet how far to go with it.) I wrote this a while ago for NaNoWriMo, only posting it now for various reasons. Enjoy. Also, cover is highly temporary. I'll probably replace it with something nicer eventually.
