《The Devil is a Stoner》Chapter 9: Drug Store in Another World

Medoea is an agricultural city to the south of Eldham and has around 20,000 residents. It's usually called a town instead of a city for its low population density. The outer edges of the city are filled with farms and fields, while the centre resembles a typical medieval city.
Cole and Rogg are now on a busy street filled with markets and other commercial buildings. The path was made of stone bricks, with horse-drawn carriages often passing by. Cole's disguise seemed to be working, as no one had even batted an eye when they saw him.
"This is the best marketplace around town. Make sure you don't get pickpocketed though."
"Yeah, I'll be fine. Wow, is that a blacksmith? Not a lot of those seen around where I live."
Cole excitedly pointed at a building that looked like a weapon store of sorts. It had a banner with an anvil and a hammer drawn on it. Medoea had a bunch of stores that were basically extinct on earth. Cole had learned to appreciate nature and historical places, as sightseeing was one of his favourite things to do while high. He looked around and admired simple details around the street.
"What, you don't have blacksmiths in your hometown? What kind of village did you come from?"
"Well, it's complicated... Anyway, where is the cheap food around here?"
Cole didn't want to reveal his identity to people. He thought if word got around of him originally being a human, people could possibly kick him out of town. It was easier just pretending to be a normal demon.
"Well, prices change rapidly around here. We'll have to look around until we find something at a good price. Usually, I like to buy good bread at one silver each."
"How much are these coins worth anyway? Is one silver coin a lot?"
"You really don't know anything, do you? 100 bronze coins are equal to one silver coin and 100 silver coins is a gold coin. Around Medoea, most people use silver coins for things like clothing and equipment, while bronze coins for cheap foods, such as carrots."
If bronze coins were compared to earth's currency, they would be somewhere around a penny, while a silver coin would be a dollar. It's a rough estimate though, as prices of things jump around rapidly during wartime. Right now, Medoea was fairly short on goods while people had a lot of money, so prices were fairly high. It wasn't critical though, as the city was still well fed due to the large amounts of farms.
"Oh, I get it now. Doesn't that mean we're basically dirt poor?"
"Yep, that's exactly what it means. Now my inn should start getting customers though, so at least we should have enough money for food."
Cole and Rogg finally found bread for an acceptable price and headed back towards the inn. They had found a fairly large loaf for exactly one silver.
"So Rogg, how do you usually make money around here?"
"Most of my customers are adventurers who need a place to stay for the night. The price is usually one silver per night. It used to be three, but I barely got any customers. Additionally, I sell foods at a high cost during the night. Pretty much all shops are closed during late hours, so when adventurers come here they're usually hungry and will settle with overpriced food."
"Ohh, sounds good! How many customers do you usually have then?"
"Well... not many. I've been getting less and less through the years. For the past month, I barely got any customers, as the thieves kept robbing all of them. Let's hope today someone will come though!"
Cole and Rogg kept waiting for someone to book a room. As expected, no one came during the day. They waited until midnight, and still had zero customers. Cole was getting bored waiting. Back on earth, calm days were his favourites, as he had to do nothing while still getting paid by the hour. For business owners, it isn't good at all though, as it meant getting less money.
"Kind of uneventful isn't it?"
"Yeah... Dammit! Where is everyone? Usually, at least one group should have come by now. Why can't I just be rich? I hate working at this stupid inn!"
Cole was feeling bad for Rogg and tried to come up with a way to help the situation. He had worked in retail while getting the paid minimum wage for too many years of his life and knew how frustrating it was.
"At this rate, we'll run out of food again! Maybe I should just quit the inn and start being a merchant. If we could just come up with a product that people want we could easily become rich! Ahh, this sucks! Cole can you give me a hit off the apple pipe?"
!!!
"Wait! Can you say that again?"
"Can you give me a hit off the apple pipe?"
"No, before that."
"Umm, If we could just come up with a good product that people want we could easily become rich."
"That's it!"
A product that people want? Can't we just sell weed!? Why didn't I think of this sooner?
Cole just got a brilliant business idea. Selling weed was strictly illegal where Cole used to live, so the idea wasn't even considered in his mind. He grinned like a mad man at the thought of becoming rich through selling weed.
There was one problem with the plan though since Cole didn't know how to grow cannabis. He had always just bought weed from drug dealers instead. The risk of getting caught growing was just too large. However, Cole's brain was thinking for once in his life, and he came up with an idea that could work.
"I think I've got a way to make us both rich!"
"Really!? How will we do it?"
Rogg's eyes immediately lit up when Cole made the bold statement. He was expecting a great idea as it was coming from Cole. After all, Cole had saved him multiple times already.
"Rogg, do you know any farmers nearby?"
"Yes, one of my friends, Artyom is actually a farmer. In fact, he is one of the best farmers in Medoea. His farm is just outside the city. Don't tell me your idea is to start farming?"
"Perfect! That makes things a lot easier. And no, we won't start farming. I've got a much more profitable plan than just farming. We'll start growing weed and selling it for a profit! This city is so fucking depressed, just imagine how much we'll make selling weed here!"
Rogg started thinking. He was a terrible merchant and sucked at making money, but even he realized how great this plan was.
"Hmm... You're right! We would be the only ones selling weed around here. This could become big! What do we need a farmer for though?"

"Think about it. How are we going to grow enough weed inside your tiny inn? We'll get your farmer friend to grow a shit ton of weed, and sell them for a profit here. We'll call our shop 'The Drug Store'!"
"Ohh! Cole, you're a genius! Let's go meet Artyom first thing in the morning. We'll become fucking rich!"
It was decided. Rogg's inn was going to be turned into a cannabis dispensary.
After waking up, Cole and Rogg immediately headed towards Artyom's farm. It was currently 7 am, and they were almost there. It had only been a five-kilometre walk from Rogg's inn. Cole would never wake up this early out of his own free will, but he was too excited and couldn't even sleep. He and Rogg would be the proud owners of the world's first cannabis dispensary.
They arrived at Artyom's farm. It was easily the biggest farm Cole had ever seen. All around him were fields filled with wheat as far as the eye could see. There were many barns filled with animals, and in the middle of it all was Artyom's farmhouse.
Rogg knocked on the front door of the house. A few moments later it opened, and a middle-aged man with white horns came out.
"Oh, it's you Rogg! How have you been my friend? And who's this guy with those... plants?
Artyom was excited to see Rogg. It seemed like they were good friends who hadn't seen each other in a long time. He spoke in a slight Russian accent. Cole was confused by this, as Russia literally didn't exist here. Maybe it was just because of the translation glasses. He seemed to show interest in the cannabis plants already, which was a great start.
"Hey Artyom! Nice to meet you again! This is Cole, he is a genius who basically saved my life. I owe a great deal to him."
"That's going too far... I'm not a genius."
Cole looked flustered and annoyed at the same time after Rogg's statement. He was still awkward as ever.
"Well, nice to meet you Cole! If Rogg says so, then you must be an amazing person! I'd love to dine with you two right now, but I've got a lot of work to do. Or are you here for some other reason? Did you perhaps come here to ask for money?"
It was now time to make the negotiations. Rogg agreed to let Cole handle them, as it was his idea anyway. Cole was confident, with years of experience working at retail behind his back. He wasn't an expert though, as is evident by working at minimum wage without ever getting a raise for many years.
"Actually, we came here to make an offer regarding these plants. Here!"
Cole handed over the cannabis plant to Artyom. He thoroughly examined the plant before handing it back over to Cole.
"Interesting. Despite all my years of adventuring and farming, I've never seen plants like this. What are they called?"
"It's called Cannabis or weed for short. It's used as a sort of medicine. So, would you be interested in growing these for us? Of course, we'll give you a fair price."
The negotiation was going well. Artyom seemed interested in the cannabis plants. Now all that was left was the price.
"Hmm... I think I could grow them depending on the amount you need. How much would you pay for them?"
"Let's see... I think around 100 plants should suffice for now. We might need more later though. You have to start growing right away though, since we are in a hurry. As for the price, depending on the quality of the plants we could pay you anywhere from one to five silver per plant."
"!!!"
Rogg and Artyom were both surprised. In their minds, Cole's price was way too high. Artyom was expecting to get around 10 silver coins for all of the 100 plants, but instead, Cole offered ten times the amount. Artyom's entire farm earned only about a dozen gold coins of profit annually, despite him being one of the best farmers in the entire world. Most people didn't even make a single gold coin after working for a whole year. Cole, however, was offering upwards of five gold coins for just 100 plants. It seemed completely insane.
"What?! How can you offer me so much for just 100 plants? Where did you guys get so much money? Is there a catch?"
"Yeah, I knew that wouldn't cut it... Wait what? So much?"
Cole thought he had given a lowball offer and was expecting to be rejected. Never in his wildest dreams would he have expected the offer to be too much. He had calculated that one silver coin is about a euro in his currency, and one euro was ridiculously cheap for a full cannabis plant. Sometimes he had paid upwards of 15 euros for just a single gram. Even Rogg seemed to be surprised by his offer. Cole took this opportunity to lower the price.
"Alright, one silver per decent plant. Is that good enough?"
Artyom thought for a moment. He didn't seem convinced.
"Is this a scam? You're not going to take them without paying right?"
"No, I promise to pay the money right away when the plants are grown. I don't even need to go into debt."
Artyom had no choice but to trust Cole. His old friend, Rogg had been saved by Cole. Rogg had never been dishonest , and it didn't seem like he was being held hostage.
"Hmm, alright. You've got yourself a deal! I'll grow as many as you'd like! I promise to grow the best cannabis you'd get from Medoea!"
Artyom seemed excited. The negotiations were successful. Cole handed over a handful of seeds collected from his two cannabis plants. Usually having seeds was just a nuisance, but this time it was a blessing. If the plant had no seeds, Cole would have had to search the entire world in hopes of finding more plants.
Cole and Rogg headed back towards the inn. Cole was in high spirits after his successful negotiations, but Rogg didn't look so happy.
"What are you thinking? Why did you offer such a high price? How will we ever get that amount paid back? Ahh! Now I'm going to be even more in debt!"
"Rogg relax! It's all going according to plan. We'll easily get the plants paid off and more just by selling these two. Trust me, we'll be rich in just a few months!"
Rogg calmed down a little bit after the reassuring words. He still wasn't fully convinced though.
"Well... If you say so then it must be true."
And thus, the world's first cannabis dispensary opened.

Path of Righteousness
What do you desire? What are you afraid of? You run away from one, pursuing the other. Is that all you are? Conquer your fears. Dig to the bottom and confirm, what you really want... ...For you cannot escape suffering and death. You only have a little time. Use it wisely. Uru, a young boy with no talent for magic or fighting, sets out on a quest to become an avatar of order, the physical embodiment of righteousness, in a distant future, where control of origin energy allows people to defy physics and manipulate causality. Mocked by fate and broken by impossible dreams, all that's left is to stand in defiance to cruel existence. Because there is a Truth out there, somewhere. Singular, transcendent, eternal. What would you sacrifice for it? *** This is a fantastic sci-fi epic. It's going to blend both western and eastern traditional fantasy tropes – like might & magic and cultivation – with rational sci-fi grounded fully in reality, to produce a purely fictional fairy tale. I'd like to deliver something light-hearted and yet wholly serious. An uplifting adventure exploring the unfathomable reaches of humanity, free of indecency, with a healthy dose of humorous banter, legendary beings, and most importantly – lots of exciting, firework-filled mayhem! I've tried reading many web novels, but there's a fundamental problem with them – the eastern ones are annoyingly repetitive, superficial and morally destitute, while western ones are often dark, convoluted and profane. There's only so much one can do to filter out the bad and try to fill in the gaps with their own imagination. It's one thing to eat tasty fast food, but if it's moldy and filled with toxins, then it's not only poisonous, but also disgusting. The appreciation of beauty and higher values is disappearing at an alarming rate. Although there are throngs of talented people out there, none of them are creating what I want to witness – an inspiring battle against impossible odds, ending in absolute victory. A triumph of the spirit so overwhelming, it crushes the spectator into his seat and takes his breath away. I'm looking for a real paragon, so now I'd like to try conceiving one. *** The MC's name comes from Tolkien's Elven dictionary in Silmarillion, 'Uru' meaning 'Fire', and 'Dagnir an Uruloki' meaning 'Slayer of Dragons'. *** Note: I'm neither a native speaker, nor an aficionado of literature – I've never written anything before, and despite proficient English my literary prowess is abysmal. It therefore takes me a painful amount of effort to polish the chapters and bring them up to par. Last year I wrote and posted some on FictionPress, but I stopped since it wasn't going anywhere. The appalling amount of filth and mediocrity being peddled in all the media nowadays – a result of no conspiracy to manipulate the masses, but plain supply and demand – is no longer just the triumph of form over substance, but most worryingly corruption of the latter. Who wants to read about ideals anymore? And yet, masses flock together to gobble up perversion and depravity. That being said, I can't rule out pitiful exposure as the culprit to my failure, so I am now once again trying to increase it here, possibly for the last time. If there are still human beings present, hungry or in need of a detox after eating too much garbage, make yourselves heard, so I can see a reason to continue the story. Otherwise it's pointless – I'm not going to make fodder for the masses, and I'm most certainly not going to throw pearls before swine. I'll simply stop writing altogether.
