New world? New beginning
When I opened my eyes the first thing I saw was a beautiful lake illuminated by a full moon that was several time larger than that on Earth.
Surrounding it there was a large forest with big trees and it was possible to see some light that resembled fireflies fluctuating pretty much everywhere.
I was truly captivated by the astounding scenery that appeared in front of me and it made me unable to divert my gaze for a few minutes before managing to return my attention.
Since my perception was now enhanced I could clearly feel the changes compared to my old world.
Permeating everything surrounding me, from the air, to the earth, to the living creatures, there was something that was new to me. Since this is a fantasy world I suppose I should call it mana.
Since I was technically an alien to this world I was devoid of it and instead of passing trough me it avoided me like a river flows around a rock unless I wished otherwise. If I wanted I could attract it to me and amass it.
Okay, now I suppose I should search for sentient beings. Of course I hope I will not be considered an undead or something along this lines… Well technically I AM an undead but since for me it doesn’t matter leave it be.
Anyway… I hope in this world there are pretty cat girls since I love cats. Or maybe a beautiful elf…
Concentrate! Okay.
The first thing to do was to find a good spot to see if I can find a settlement so I started floating for 80 feet before stopping and now I could have a better look of my surrounding.
The lake was large more or less 200 meters (656 feet) and the forest extended for a few miles.

In the direction of the other side of the lake where present some light that indicated the presence of civilization or at least a village, judging by the dimensions.
I started to go toward the village while I was thinking of good ways to approach the inhabitants.
Oh… Shit… How am I supposed to know their language.
Well I can think of a way later.
What I found when I arrived was a village of medium dimension of… humans…
“How disappointing”
Honestly speaking I hoped to encounter a different race, like elves or cat girls…or elves…
Well it’s not my fault, so I entered the village, remaining invisible, and waited for the dawn since the villagers were still sleeping.
At the sunrise the village finally started to begin activity. It was of medium size and surrounded by walls made of wood. Maybe to repel beast.
Hearing their talk I was quite surprised to find that I could comprehend them even tough that they didn’t speak English. Maybe it’s because I can read the intentions behind the words. It saved me a lot of future problems honestly.
Now comes the next problem. How should I interact with them? Maybe I should start by changing my looks.
Who wouldn’t find suspicious a ghastly pale boy, with glowing eyes that appeared from the forest without any food and with strange and light clothing? ME!!!
Fortunately, being my body just an illusion without consistence I can change appearance as I wish.
I made my hair less foggy and a little shorter, and reverted my eyes to grey.
Next, I changed my clothes to more suitable for a fantasy world I choose a white/grey robe and a tattered pale mantle. Naturally my boots were pointed… I like pointy boots…
*cough* Anyway, even like this I need an alibi and since new world=new life, maybe a new name.

Something that have something to do with a ghost… maybe… Samashelasurdabeth?… nah…
… a wraith… fog… caligo… Caligo… yeah Caligo is a good name… approved.
Okay the looks are good, now I can go.
I descended in a place close to the village and after becoming visible and tangible I started to close to the village.
When I was close to the gates a little girl that was playing there noticed me and called the attention of their parents.
I entered the gate with a gentle smile on my face… after all the first impression is important and it’s better to not show an unfeeling face since this is my new beginning.
A man in is forties approached me and with a slightly weary gaze hidden by my same smile. He had light brown eyes, short red hair, and a strong build.
“Hello stranger, may I know what business do you have in the village of Gleaming Wood? As you can see there isn’t much to see here”(???)
“Greetings, my name is Caligo and I am a wanderer. I lost my ways in the wood and when I saw this village I hoped you could offer me a little of hospitality. May I enter?”(me)
He looked at me with a little of suspicion and after a few seconds, as if clearing his doubts, he gave me a genuine smile.
“But of course! Sorry for the treatment, but this village is a little isolated because of the forest and we rarely see strangers so a little of suspicion doesn’t harm. By the way my name is Albert. I hope you are not offended. Please enter, this night I can be your host.”(Albert)
“Thank you mister Albert and no, I am not offended but are you sure that it’s all right to make me sleep at your house like this? I have no money to offer”(me)
Of course with enough concentration I could gather precious material from the soil to form money, but right now I don’t even know how the economy works here nor the look of the money. And cheating too much didn’t sound right, after all I came in this world for fun and curiosity.
“Please don’t worry. If you are worried about money then just helping by cutting a little wood will be enough”(Albert)
How fortunate. It was easy…
In that moment we heard a powerful roar and from the forest emerged a large bear with long fangs similar to that of a wild boar.
“Seriously!!!”(me)
… Not again…

The Oresteia (Modernized)
All three of the great Greek Tragedians have written plays about the bloody chain of murder and revenge within the royal family of Argos. Yet theirs is in fact not a story of tragedy, but rather one of redemption. As they move from darkness to light, from rage to self-governance, from primitive ritual to civilized institution, their spirit of struggle and regeneration becomes an everlasting song of celebration to be heard throughout the ages. Forming a discourse set against the emergence of Athenian democracy out of a period of chaos and destruction, the Orestian plays are compelling stories of the tensions between our obligations to our families and the laws that bind us together as a society. In the beginning, we witness how a king’s decision to sacrifice his daughter and turn the tide of war inflicts lasting damage on his family, culminating in a terrible act of retribution. In the aftermath of regicide, we behold how a son must set out to avenge his father’s death by committing a most egregious sin. In the end, the sinner is tormented by supernatural powers that can never be appeased, but ultimately finds redemption and ends the curse on his house once and for all. Woven through all of this is the story of a friendship so close that it elevates itself to brotherhood - Where the blood of the covenant is shown to be indeed thicker than the water of the womb. In this very brief twelve-chapter modern rendition of the Orestian plays, I have chosen to place my focus mainly on the lives of the characters Orestes and his best friend Pylades. The chapters, each around 2000-2500 words, are split up evenly between them in first-person narrative. I hope that you will come to enjoy reading this heartwarming story, but more importantly, that you see how the conflicts portrayed in the story, whether human or institutional, are still much very relevant to our societies today. Note on Sources: The details of this story is very loosely based on The Oresteia by Aeschylus. And I mean very loosely. Other sources that I referenced for detail and inspiration are Mythology by Edith Hamilton, Electra by Sophocles, and Iphigenia in Tauris by Euripides. You may also find that I have quoted some of these works, and others (such as Shelley's Ozymondaeus), without citations (average of 1-2 such quotes per chapter). I did this because I do not have the ability to describe certain scenes nearly as well as some of those writers. If you read a particularly beautiful piece of prose here, chances are it's probably stolen lol. Also, I wrote this during the summer between my high school senior year and my college freshmen year. It was the summer of 2020, and being quarantined apparently gets my creative side out lol.
