Chapter 0030

“Damn stupid idiots. They were warned about the noise and the dangers of the forest, yet they still made a ruckus. Did they truly think Aria Se Jivock and Xing Zhi Hui were going to swoop in and save them when things got to rough? Idiots. It wouldn’t be a test otherwise!” Jean silently curses in her heart as she fought off waves of wolves.

The mercenary group was able to respond well to the ambush, getting into formation relatively quickly despite the panic cries of a few greenhorns.

They even manage to kill off a few wolves. The battle might favor the humans, but the wolves outnumber the mercenaries at least 7 to 1 so unless something drastic happens, they will lose half their members in this fight with the rest of the group running away for their lives.

Right now formation is being held due to the might of Emery, a melee fighter in dark green leather wielding an axe and the black haired mercenary trio.

At the rate of their energy depletion, the group will last an hour max. They can’t kill fast enough.

Despite their low levels, the Iron Clawed Wolves have numbers on their side. As one wolf dies, another take its place. The initial 100 or so wolves that attacked contained the old, sickly or weak wolves. The stronger wolves will attack in a second wave.

The stereotype held by cultivators about low level magical beast are true. Low level magical follows their instinct, hunting and killing those weaker than themselves. The rules of the jungle apply heavily to low-level magical beasts. Pack hunters such as the Iron Clawed Wolves will hunt in groups to improve their chances of survival. It is a part of their instinct to obey the stronger wolves in the hierarchy, however a dumb dog following a dumb dog means there are two dumbs dogs.

The Iron Clawed Wolves are not attacking like stupid beasts. Instead, they send in the dying to weaken their group while they store their strength for a final assault with fresh strong wolves.

The Alpha Iron Clawed Wolf isn’t a low-level beast.

“Ahhhh…”

That was Amber’s voice. She was hurt. She had to make her way to protect her friend.

Jeaned curse her newfound knowledge. The timing was all wrong. Why couldn’t she meet Amber before they were ambushed by the Iron Clawed Wolves?

Even a day.

Jean needed time. Time to sort out the knowledge crammed into her brain. Time to sort out her emotions, especially about Amber. Time to decide whether she wanted to continue the friendship they had from their previous lives.

Although the emotions from their previous lives transferred to this one, it didn’t compel Jean to act on it, only to show her how Amber once was and to complete their dying wish, to meet each other again in another life.

Having lived a lifetime, the her in Jean’s previous life knew the chances of meeting her lifelong friends is like finding a specific grain of sand in the sea, near impossible. Asking them to be friends again? As likely as the legendary curse soul mate constantly meeting each other every lifetime… oh wait, Amber is one half of the curse soul mate. So their meeting each other is very likely and the previous her hope they can be friends again.

Jean accepted they were going to be lifelong friends in this lifetime. Amber’s luck in life is dismal at best, so pathetic giants taking a step stomped on her and said sorry to the ant. What the hell? That didn’t make sense. It must have been a memory carried over that Jean needed to sort out, if she had TIME.

Jean renewed her attacks trying to kill her way towards her newfound friend.

Fate gave them a chance to meet each other again in another life. Jean wanted to rekindle the friendship they shared in the previous life. The scheming princess did not receive all the memories from her previous life; the bond she shared with Amber was too fragile to impart the full inheritance.

Quite the reversal, Jean acknowledged in her heart, from wanting time to decide to decision made in the heat of battle and acting on it as if the memories were truly a part of her though the few snippets of memories she received was enough to give her hope that friendship wasn’t merely a word used to lull the gullible into believing the con, that there was someone willing to risk their lives, despite all odds to come and save another in the name of friendship.

Jean has been jaded by life at court to able to truly trust another person. It didn’t mean she wanted to be alone. She never wanted to be alone.

Maybe it was the loneliness that spurred her actions. Who knows? Jean certainly doesn’t.

There was a saying she once heard the queen said in rare moments of depression, “It is lonely at the top.”

Without the memories of the care Amber in their previous life gave her, Jean will strive to be the powerful cultivator at the peak of power treating everyone as mere stepping stones for her to ascend higher than everyone else.

With a sense of a new hope, Jean Gretnore for the first time in her life fought to protect someone other than herself.

One of the Iron Clawed Wolf made a vicious attack, discarding any hope to live, intent on breaking the blockage the three black hair mercenaries created.

Amber was able to kill the suicidal wolf, but she paid a small price for her carelessness, her sword arm suffered a slight injury that would worsen over time if left untreated but there was no time to treat her wounds. Over time, the fighting aggravated her wounds, reducing her fighting power.

Senna and Bailey did their best to watch her back. They been protecting each other since they were children.

“Why is that woman coming over here for?” Senna shouted as they continued to fight off the relentless attack of the Iron Clawed Wolves.

“Who knows how royalty thinks.” Bailey retorted as the fight raged on.

The trio fought back-to-back with each other for a long time. They were able to seamlessly fight with each other. Due to their skill, the trio didn't feel the same pressure the other cultivators did when they are in a dangerous situation. They have enough breathing room to observe their surroundings without having to worry about a sneak attack. It was how they noticed Jean kill their way over to them.

Jean.

The haughty pampered princess who stood aloof from the crowd while her servants demand the rest of the group to follow her lead.

The arrogant woman who represents everything they hate about the upper class.

The strong rival they have to compete against.

Now one of her best friends, Amber thought in her heart.

How did she get so lucky to encounter lifelong friends?

Senna, Bailey and now Jean.

Despite fighting for their lives, Amber was happy. Even if she were to die today, she’d die surrounded by friends.

“There is an Alpha Iron Clawed Wolves controlling them.” Emery yelled as she slaughters the attacking Iron Claw Wolf in a magnificent feat of swordsmanship.

Emery’s announcement brought fear to the group. An Alpha Iron Clawed Wolf is a level 3 magical beast. The Sundered Lion they are hunting is also a level 3 magical beast and they prepared many treasures to cope with it. Before they met the Sundered Lion, they have to contend with an Alpha Iron Claw Wolf and its pack.

The few weak willed mercenaries fighting in the front line started to edge towards the center of the group, leaving the stronger mercenaries to contend with the onslaught.

They came here to take the test for the Brilliant Yin Sect. It required them to kill the Sundered Lion. Before meeting their target, these scheming wenches have no intention of using their trump card. Furthermore, the more people dying to the Alpha Iron Clawed Wolf, the better it is for them. There will be less competition.

These sly foxes were confident there will be no repercussions against them since Aria Se Jivock and Xing Zhi Hui isn’t even here.

Surely the two test overseer would intervene before they get to the Sundered Lion. Since they did not, it implies they aren’t here.

Of course most of the mercenaries didn’t realize there was a group of cultivators high above them watching the fight. If they did, they might have acted differently.

Emery sneered at their actions while she continued to fight. Cowards. The people who fell back are the people Emery hated the most.

Even that cold princess is fighting to hold the line.

“No good. I can’t cast anymore spells!”

“Me neither.”

“Me too.”

The vanguard was able to hold off the Iron Clawed Wolves with the help of the rearguard, but now the rearguard is flagging. When one person announces their dwindling reserves, another will join in until almost all the rearguard claim their reserves were almost out.

Emery knew they were lying. Those scared idiots wanted to save their power to rush out of the encirclement.

Amidst the despair, a crystal clear voices rang out, filled with courage and a ferocious will to fight against all odds, capable of rousing the fight spirits of all that heard her call. The message however….

“Selling random charms, 10 silvers a piece! Just throw the coins into the air and a random charm will be sent to you!”
